The type of mechanic you wish you always lived near. I have had nothing more than fantastic service at jaw-dropping, low cost, prices. Things that would have cost me 400-500+ dollars at some mechanics cost me less then 200 dollars. Mr. Cho might not do everything (the lack of tire service was kind of a bummer but w/e he more then makes up for it); the work that he does do is off the chart and not only that he is quick. What a hidden gem. We had been taking our cars to the dealership regularly for repairs (hey, liked the free car rental). But as our cars got older we started looking for places that did great work and were honest. We are very thankful for finding Cho's Auto Service. It is a no frills place but the past year they did the work correctly and saved us quite a bit of money in repairs. Mr. Cho was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. The first few times, we brought in an estimate from the dealer. He really didn't need to see that, he wanted to know what our complaints were of the car. I really appreciate the fact that each repair we had, it was done right to begin with and that the car was ready when they said it would be. And in every single case, most of the work the dealership said needed to be done was NOT needed. This place is very reliable. Last time at the dealer, my license plate light burned out. They told me the lighting assembly had become rusted and that I needed a whole new unit, painting it to match trim, etc. $500. I mentioned to Mr. Cho my predicament and asked if he could try to get the bulb out. I was charged all of $2.99 for a light bulb. So far so good. This is a no-frills place that doesn't wow you with nice waiting area, paved driveways, easy location to get to, clean garages, or a bunch of auto parts posters and advertisements. What it has is solid price for what you want to get done, and friendly hours (7:30am-6pm) to drop off or pick up your car. I had recently asked them to do a courtesy check on a vehicle for my dad. I know the car's service history very well so I knew there were only a few possibilities they could find. Fortunately they said to swap the driving belts and have the wheels re-aligned (they don't do the latter, but recommend I seek out a tire place). Easy, straight forward and my car drives great. Once I have a chance to take it in for more complex issue, I'll update this review. I took 1 star away because I hate going through the traffic necessary to get here. How many times have you gone to a mechanic and thought that you could not trust a word they say to you? Never? A few? Every time? Well I'm the every time kind of guy. I have friends who are mechanics and they tell me that their job is half mechanic and half salesman. So of course my friends will help me but that kind of help usually takes a long time because they have to work on paying customers before helping me out. So what to do? what to do? I happened upon Mr. Cho's when I was looking for a shop that had a lathe machine that could turn my rotors as I knew I have needed brake pads for a little while now. I called every place with at least 3 stars in the Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Germantown areas. Mr Cho's was one of the few that could perform the work. Albeit, the quote over the phone was more than 95% of the other shops for a break pad replacement. I attribute this to the work that his shop does with the lathe machine. They are not easy machines to use and do take a fair amount of concentration. Maybe not time, but definitely concentration as the slightest miscalculation can cost you big time. He quoted me $210 for front brake pads and turning of my rotors. Like everybody on this site, I read the reviews of how honest and straight forward he is. But being someone who completely does not trust mechanics in their natural habitat, I was skeptical. I was just there for an inspection, which he did free of charge, and I was in an out in under and hour with no appointment. That's amazing in and of itself. Upon inspection he confirmed what I already knew...and he didn't try to up-sell me on anything! After some haggling and whittling down what would actually be done, he replaced the pads and off I went! TO ANYBODY WHO DOES NOT TRUST MECHANICS AND IS READING THIS...trust Mr. Cho. He's an honest, good guy who will take care of you and your car and will not try to sell you. As long as my family is in Maryland, I will go to him for all major car needs. Disclaimer: I grew up with Larry's Cho's younger brother and know the family so my assessment of his honesty and integrity might be biased. My assessment of this shop's competence is not related to knowing him in other contexts. Cho's Auto is highly competent and takes great care of my car. My Acura has over 175,000 miles on it, and it still runs like it is only a few years old. At this mileage I am dealing with repairs/replacement of worn out parts, but Cho's Auto has been very methodical in dealing with what is necessary and not trying to upsell. I like that Larry is straight forward about what he can do and what is better handled elsewhere - like tires, or certain things for our German car. It's like having a great doctor who knows when to send you to a specialist. The pricing is more than fair. If you want a fancy waiting room, fast talking "service advisor" who tries to sell you more than you need, and a late model loaner car, this is not the place for you. I had all of this at the dealership when I owned a fancy German car, but I soon realized they needed the fancy waiting room because there were so many occasions to use it. As to integrity, there are only a few honest shops that I know of, and Cho's Auto is at the top of the list. I believe he has an ethic of treating everyone the way he would want to be treated. Cho's is reasonably priced and I have never even suspected that they would rip me off. I took a car in for brake work and they told me that the brakes were fine and that I did not need anything done to them. They also told me that my radiator hose needed replacing; sure enough, 2 weeks later the radiator hose started leaking. they are fixing it now. honest, good work, good prices. Came here for an oil change because it was down the street from my apartment and it got good reviews. Brought my own oil and filter and figured it was a very good price just to do the change. First, they tech loses my washer that I know I put in the box right before I came. Second, he let my door hit the lift as he was getting out. And lastly, before I went in, all my aftermarket gauges were working. After my oil change, my oil temp gauge was throwing an error most likely because the sensor became disconnected. All the tech said was that he changed the oil filter. Which is fine, I get that, but before it went in my gauge was working. All I'm asking is to take a look at the connections to see if it came loose. Needless to say I drove away with a gauge that's constantly blinking at me telling me there's power but no sensor. Update: I returned due to a leak from the K&N filter (not the shops fault) brought an OEM filter and the shop was actually more courteous this time around. They talked to me (which they really didn't do earlier),helped me out, and let me go fix the gauge connection while it was on the lift. I take it's a hit or miss if they feel like being personable that visit. read more

In all my life I have never serviced a car in a more trustworthy place. I've got proof of Cho's quality of service. I have been bringing my Prius and Lexus ES300 here for the last 100,000 miles (each). They are still running beautifully, and I've never had to overpay for service. Cho NEVER gives you a list of random things "you need to take care of soon" like other places do. He only recommends things that are necessary. My cars are in tip top shape and so is my bank account. If you're looking for a glamorous waiting lounge, go somewhere else. But if you want quality service from an honest establishment it's Cho's. Period. read more

Had to change mechanics as one going to for years sold his business. Finding a reliable mechanic you trust is tough. Dealerships try but I find local mechanics try harder. We went to Cho's off recommendation by local auto body shop and were very impressed. Twice came in the week, one car to check a flat tire and another car with rear brake light out. This is the place to go in Gaithersburg or surrounding area if you have an Asian car. Cho's works on my Toyota RAV4, but they also specialize in Nissan, Honda, Acura, Lexus, Mazda, and Subaru (according to their business card). It is just off of Summit Ave very close to historic downtown Gaithersburg. Very reasonably priced, and they do an excellent job. Took the car here to get the clutch replaced. The shop was super nice and even let us know the noise wasn't the clutch but actually the transmission... they got all the prices for a new transmission and didn't push us to get one. They did the repairs without fixing the transmission. All in all good reliable shop. read more

After seeing the great reviews here, I sent my husband to Mr. Cho for an estimate to repair what we suspected was a damaged CV joint on his 2003 Chrysler. After checking the car(?), Cho told us that it was a selinoid valve, and that we should take it to the dealer for repair as he couldn't do it. He didn't charge for the estimate, which we though was nice. However, he made a pretty major misdiagnosis -- the front right tie rod was broken, which had nothing to do with the selinoid or even the transmission, for that matter! I'm disappointed as I thought we had found a new local mechanic -- I guess he should stick to foreign cars. read more

My wife has been going here for years. I dont because they typically work on foriegn asian cars, and my Dodge Ram didnt fit there lift one time before. I call him to day about brakes and rotors hoping that it didnt need to be lifted that high. So glad I called price was THREE HUNDRED dollars cheaper than NTB! Cho's Auto provides outstanding service. While it can be so hard to find honest and reliable mechanics, Larry and his team have proven time and time again that they put their customers first. For years, Larry and his team have been providing maintenance and addressing issues with my car. Cho's was recommended by a colleague, and I was immediately convinced of their trustworthiness. I asked Larry and his team to check out my clutch after the car dealership insisted it be replaced ASAP (a several thousand dollar estimate from the dealership). Larry's assessment was that my car was in need of a tune up instead, and not a new clutch (note: the clutch lasted another 4 years until I recently sold the car). On one occasion, he was unable to fix a computer problem (and referred me to the manufacturer); and on another he evaluated my car after loud noises under the back wheel and would only charge me if I proceeded with the repair even though he had to special order parts (I opted to sell my aging car instead). In both of those instances, he was straightforward about the issues and understanding even though he may not get the business for those specific repairs. This place is awesome. The owner (I'm assuming is Larry) is a no nonsense guy, who is more than honest. Previously went to Goodyear in Rockville for a simple oil change and wouldn't you know it, I left with a "you have to fix this and this and this or else the car is going to fall apart" sales pitch. Total of the pitch was just shy of $1000. I then decided to take the car (and list of 'required' services) to Cho's at the recommendation of a colleague. Larry took a look at the list and immediately brought my car into the shop and up the lift for a check. After having his guy check out the car for about 30 minutes (watched him checked it all), he told me that not all the items needed to be done nor was there a need to have specific replacements. All told, the overall cost for the truly necessary work came to be $650. Anyway, I was highly satisfied with their service and appreciate their honesty. I will definitely be back whenever I need more services for my two cars. read more

I typically do my own car maintenance, but didn't have time to do my own transmission and brake fluid change. I tried to take it to the dealer to get it all done with the 30k maintenance. They said the 30k maintenance was 500 and with the transmission, power steering, brake flush, motor oil and fluid change would be at least $1000. So I took a chance at Cho's since he gave me a up in the air quote of $300. I was somewhat leery due to the price difference. When I returned to pick it up the bill was only about 200ish. I couldn't believe it I had to make sure he did everything I asked. Car drove like brand new and I was very happy. I returned to have him change my passenger motor mount. They aren't perfect but seriously I appreciate the honesty and how he can squeeze me in same day. They will be my mechanic for now on-and I live an hour away. read more

Mr Cho's Auto Service came up and I noticed all the good reviews on Yelp. While standing at the coffie machine, talking about taking my car to Mr. Cho's, a woman in my office runs out and said she has been going to Cho's Auto Service for many years and had nothing but good thinks to say. So off I go to Cho's.. I've been having AC and starter problems with my 2008 Honda Civic. The dealer had looked at the AC twice and never did figure out the problem. Mr. Cho and company figured out the real probem (Needed a new Alternator) and solved all my current problems. Starter works great, AC seems to be good and the 60Hz hum that was always in the back ground is no longer a problem. Thanks to Mr. Cho and his mechanics, I'm a very happy person. And now I'm a believer.. in Cho's Auto Service.. It's a small shop and I suspect they have more business than they know what to do with. But if you have a little patience, it will be worth it... My car was making a new funny noise, mostly screeching. The old funny noise was vibration coming from the catalytic converter. I took my car to the Honda dealer and they said it would be $70 for the diagnostic but that it would go to the cost of the repair. I decided to take it to Cho's on a Saturday. I called first and he said I could bring it in but would have to wait because I didn't have an appointment. So I waited a while til they could get my car on the lift. After 15 minutes they confirmed the noise from the catalytic converter and said the second noise was from calipers / rotors that I would need. Larry gave me a quote for the parts and labor. He said if I wanted to have the parts shipped he would just charge for the labor. Since the situation wasn't dire, I decided to wait. He didn't even charge me for checking the car. During my wait Larry would tell people what needed to be done immediately and what could wait. read more

We refer anyone we come across looking for a mechanic who is honest and offers a fair value. His shop also does our pre-purchase inspections, as we often buy late-model used cars.
