Started with a veggie dosa as an amazing appetizer followed by the brussel sprouts tikka masala that was quite possibly the best tikka masala I've ever had! We also had the yellow dal and tandoori paneer kabobs and they were equally excellent. Our server was super, super helpful in helping us narrow our choices from a very appealing assortment of menu options. One of the best Indian meals we've had in years! read more

I wish Yelp would let us give half stars; my 2 star review is generous. Cholanad deserves 1 1/2 stars but I rounded up rather than down because it wasn't quite a horrific 1 star experience and we didn't get ill from the food. But nonetheless it was an all around serious disappointment both for the service and the food. My husband and I are new to the area. Hubby is a Sri Lankan Tamil and in most places, South Indian food is as close as you get. Cholanad was recommended to us and we were excited to try it. Right off the bat we were treated to some serious rudeness. We came in through the entrance by the parking lot. There's a short corridor where you pass the bar on the way to the main section of the restaurant. An older man who looked like he worked there was sitting at end of the bar, staring at us (we're a normal looking mature couple, mind you). No greeting, nothing, just a stare. I asked if should we just seat ourselves and he barked, "the hostess will seat you". Okay, we continued around the bar until we found the hostess station and were seated. Our waiter was very friendly and polite, maybe a little new at the job but a nice young man. We ordered - and I mentioned that we would be sharing everything -the tandoori chicken wings, masala dosa, shrimp tikka masala, rice and roti, and I got a spice infused ginger beer to drink. The infused ginger beer sounded like it was right up my alley and our waiter accommodated me by allowing me to choose two spices instead on one. I ordered it with cardamom and cloves. The spiced ginger beer came out first, and what a mess it was; a great idea poorly executed. The ginger beer was weak and the spices were just crushed and thrown in, so with every sip I got a mouthful of hard pieces of clove and cardamom bits. The wings were undercooked and the chewy flabby skin made them inedible, so I can't speak to the flavor. When the rest of the meal came, the server just left the appetizer plates, dropped the food off, and disappeared (remember, we were sharing). A few minutes later we were able to hunt down another server who brought us dinner plates. The dosa was good - the one high point of the meal. The shrimp were edible (could have used a few more minutes cook time though) but the tikka masala sauce was terribly bland. Huge disappointment. read more

This place is authentic. The restaurant is in a well designed modern building; it's white interior let's the food take center stage. We enjoyed the Saag Paneer and Channa Masala which were spicy but delicious. I wanted to try their mango lassi but there was no room left... ps. Garlic naan is insanely good! read more

If you are in the mood for quality Indian food, I would recommend skipping this place and going to Vimala down the street. I ate here once for dinner. The inside is beautiful- white tablecloth, vaulted ceilings. Everything I ordered was not good. The tandoori wings smelled funny were covered in a disturbing layer of ___?. Same with the tandoori lamb. I took a picture. It was barely edible for me. The meat was old and dry/chewy. The salad, iceberg lettuce, was brown. I would have given 2 or 3 stars, but my abdomen was actually hurting later that night. And I barely ate half of what I was served. I threw away my leftovers. Maybe I just had bad luck with the tandoori dishes, but I will not visit here again. To me, it's apparent the chefs or owners aren't putting love into what they serve. read more

Absolutely incredible. Hands down the best take out meal we've had during covid lockdown. We got the lamb vindaloo, chicken tiki masala, the Brussels sprouts smothered in something I'd like to also be smothered in, all the naan and the roti and paratha. When I wasn't moaning during every bite I was passionately pointing my fork at my food showing my partner how good it was. THIS PLACE HAS DOSAS!! ONLY PLACE IN DURHAM/CHAPEL HILL WITH DOSAS!! The other places that serve dosas are in Suburbian Morrisville and Cary. Cholanad takes up the prime spot of where Cypress was on Franklin St. Even though the tally of Indian restaurants within a few block stretch is now 3, I feel Cholanad adds something unique. Southern Indian cuisine has finally hit this point of the Triangle, take that, Suburbia! We got the lamb/lentil ball appetizers to start with. It was served on little spoons of top of a bit of gravy. On the menu it says it comes with "greens", but that means a small sprig of cilantro. The lamb balls were great, you could really taste both the lamb and the lentils. For dinner we got a fish curry with dosa (See Picture). Dosas are typical south Indian food that serves in place of rice. It's a crispy, thin crepe-like vessel for food and can range from size of a dinner plate to size of a dinner table. I'm used to a slightly crispier dosa, more thin. But they made our more soft/dense than I prefer it. It's probably because we let them know that Mark just had his wisdom teeth out so they were trying to be kind. The fish curry was very flavorful, the tilapia was tender and flaky. But it had no heat whatsoever. Which brings me to my biggest negative: Westernized Indian food. The owner and chef both came to our table and chatted with us. Both are Tamil and both kept emphasizing how they keep everything very mild and not spicy. Now I know many Tamils and they LOVE spicy food. So it's odd to me that a Tamil restaurant would emphasize how NOT spicy their food is. I guess they're trying to cater to the mild, genteel tastes of Chapel Hill folks? Make sure to verbalize your love of spicy food and how spicy you want it! Another negative is that the service was awfully disjointed. Only the owner and chef knew anything about the menu. Our waitress had worked there for two weeks and had no recommendations and didn't try any of the ten dishes we asked her about. This is really bad, the servers need to try the food and know how to describe it to their patrons. I'm pretty sure this is Restaurant 101. And the smallest negative: MUSIC. They were playing 80s rock music non-stop and it was oddly unsettling. The atmosphere is classy, the prices are somewhat high, and the food is Indian. But then you have the musical styling of Queen?! I'm not saying Cholanad should play cheesy Bollywood ballads, but some more atmosphere-appropriate music would be better. I debated between 3 and 4 stars, but I think the food we got was delicious and I would definitely repeat despite the oddities and hiccups. Cholanad, you were delicious and I look forward to your future. But you definitely still have some rough spots that you need to sort out. read more

I've eaten at several Indian restaurants over the years, and I don't understand how this place does not have 5 stars?! The food was absolutely delicious. You can tell when ingredients are fresh or not. You can tell when a dish's ingredient balance is off. I can tell you that everything is spot on. We had Dal fritters, the assorted Bajji, and the Tandoori Chicken Wings. We then shared the Chicken Tikka Masala. All excellent dishes with flavors you wouldn't imagine work together as well as they do. Our server recommended a special ice cream dessert called Orange Kulfi. It is made with oranges and condensed milk; served in orange peel wedges. Absolutely delicious. Check out my pic. The meal even included a wine special. What a treat for the palate and taste buds. Americanised version of Indian Food ! I wanted to check out what all the hype was about , so i made a reservation on a sunday, late afternoon . To our surpise we were the only one's in the entire restaurant. Coming to the food, we ordered Chicken 65, mutton biryani and chicken chettinad entrees. Talking about the spice levels they were very very mild although we ordered one of the spiciest dishes on the menu which i guess is to satisfy the non indian groups who are the majority group of people visiting this place according to the other reviews. We had a pretty bad experience, and since then, I've developed an even worse impression of the place. There are few places in town that I won't give a second chance, but this is one of them. Our Experience: I went with my wife, my friend, and my friend's sister. The friend's sister had some substantial dietary restrictions and the menu looked like it would have things she could eat. We were the only people there, and were seated in the back at a shaky table. Then we were given menus, picked out what we wanted, and tried to order. It turned out they were out of a lot of stuff. It was almost like a comedy sketch... ordering something, being told they were out of an ingredient (chicken), trying again, ditto, etc. I finally picked a vegetarian dish that sounded good and asked for an alternative side, and was told "no substitutions". I asked if they'd make an exception, since they were out of so many things, and he said no, so I didn't order an entree at all. My friends did order, and had what they described as a mediocre meal for a lot of money. They took about 10-15 minutes to get to us in the first place, the guy never once came back to give refills on water, and the food was delivered by kitchen staff who didn't take any refill requests. A Warning: They have a merciless parking policy. I don't drive there (I live minutes away on foot), but I walk by the restaurant almost daily back and forth to a job on campus, and can no longer count the number of times that I've seen people standing by a booted car calling someone or arguing with a manager or something because they parked in the lot and went in the adjoining Mellow Mushroom to pick up a pizza, didn't realize they couldn't park there for a second, and came out to a booted car. The other day, on my way back from work, I saw a man in tears on the phone with someone because he didn't have over $200 to remove the boot that was put on his car. His dog was in the car. He had just gone in to pick up an order. It had been minutes. Since I went on such a tirade about the parking, I've added a photo of their tow rates, as well as one that shows the proximity of the Mellow Mushroom and that may convey just how reasonable it is for someone to park there for a hot minute to pick up a pizza. They boot and tow at all times. I've seen incidents both on the way to and from work. It appears that someone sits in the lot most of the day, waits until people leave their car, and immediately boots the car. I see a man wandering the lot smoking frequently on my walks to and from work, and he seems to be the one keeping watch. These people seem to have no compassion outdoors, and didn't seem to have any sense of customer service indoors. I don't recommend it at all. Admittedly some people seem to really like the food. I didn't get that far. REGARDING THEIR RESPONSE TO THIS REVIEW: Our own experience inside was over two years prior. I'm certainly not going to dig up a receipt and remember a waiter's name from that time. The parking information (and obviously pictures) are purely factual warnings about the lot, accompanied by my personal opinions about the situation. I don't even own a car, and I live a 10-minute walk away. I have no dog in that fight. As for the seating comments... read the other reviews. It's not a unique complaint. I also find it interesting that he's "100%" certain that my review is false because I couldn't have ordered... a chicken dish? At an Indian restaurant? C'mon. A cursory search for the menu online and a search for 'chicken' in the document revealed 28 results as of this writing. If the establishment put more effort into service and less into accusing reviewers of lying whenever they have a bad experience, maybe they would get fewer poor reviews in the first place. After 2 lunches and 2 dinners I can safely say the food quality is just outstanding. I've had the Chicken briyani and shrimp curry (just ridiculous) for lunch and the Chola Nad fish curry and Soft shell crab dosa for dinner. Aside from the soft shell crab, every single other dish blew my mind. And to top it off, this is the classiest restaurant in Chapel Hill. The music, decor and excellent service are more fitting to fine dining. With appetizers from $5-7 and entrees from $9-19, these guys have hit the sweet spot. DON'T go here!!! The owner pays a private towing company to enforce towing (Gorge Kings Towing) $368 I had to pay to get my car off the hook. These two guys sit and have dinner and watch people park there and make a run for it. Less than two minutes your car is booted or on the hook. This guy was super aggressive, refused to give me his name and slammed the tire rod at my feet trying to intimidate me. I filed a police report and will proceed with legal action. Who ever wants to join me feel free to reach out. They are preying on our students and citizens!!! This is a twofold story, from an out of towner trying to get a to-go order: 1) I like to try samosa chaat wherever I go. My wife wanted Mellow Mushroom. I wanted... well, samosa chaat. So, I placed an order at Mellow Mushroom & I would walk over to the Indian place I've passed by a half dozen times going up and down Franklin. I don't get to eat a lot of Tamil cooking, and this didn't carry much of the flavor I expected, and the texture felt off. Like, when I think of chaat, I think of tangy yoghurt, and a warm/cool texture. I didn't get much of any of that, the samosas were tiny, extremely dry on the inside, and in a little plastic ramekin on the side. I'd try other foods (namely, the fish... most Tamil places have excellent fish). 2) I made the mistake of going to Mellow Mushroom first, but I guess it wouldn't have made a difference, so: this is a warning, and a complaint to Cholanad, and the landlord of the property, stop doing business with George King. $230 dollars because I was in the parking lot for 11 minutes trying to get both chaat & pizza is outrageous. Edit: I feel like I have to respond with the kind of baseless accusations that were being thrown around here by the proprietor here. "trying to order some TO GO item without even knowing what it is" Alas, I know what Samosa Chaat is. I love Samosa Chaat. I love Aloo Chaat. I even love Thayir Vadai. This didn't suit my tastebuds. I understand that they're fast moving, but I'm just saying: it's not great, even for someone who generally likes Tamil spicing & flavors. "you were the only one who order $6.00 worth of Samosa chat TOGO that itself explains you were trying to sneak out of your mistake of parking in my lot" Nah, Mathivanan, I regularly just eat Chaat by itself. That's it. Maybe with some Bajji or Pakora. It's usually a meal unto itself, the savory, creamy, spiced and a little crunchyness. So, making the implication that I was trying to "sneak out of my mistake" is hilarious. Some people in this world just want chaat. That's me. I try chaat every where I go. I'll eat chaat with a burger if I can. I wasn't that hungry. I had a slice of pizza and about a quarter of the chaat when I got back to my hotel. It was a long, stressful night before I entered the parking lot. I was extremely excited to try your restaurant... but having a predatory towing company as a partner is clue #1, and the implication that I'm somehow "lying because I only ordered a chaat", is clue #2 as to why you got two stars here. You know you're not in the right place when our host and waiter said nothing, no Merry Christmas, no explanation of any of the dishes we ordered, just a blank stare. Despite the fact there are 3 other Indian places within walking distance, I will definitely be returning here. I like the contemporary south Indian style because it makes room for lighter food than I'm accustomed to. With this restaurant, you don't have to get stuffed to try everything. I would highly recommend the dosas. Even though they aren't marked as an appetizer, they are happy to serve them as such, slicing the crepe-like roll into 6 pieces. The spring Sosa even came with a small, savory doughnut for tasting. After such a tasty starter, I didn't think the meal could get any better. I was proved wrong. My friend and I had both ordered appetizers as our main courses. I got the shrimp tikka - beach style. Oh. My. Goodness. It was incredible. The dish looks tiny with only 2 shrimp, but the flavor is incredible, full of spices with a squirt of a sauce underneath that is earthy and subtle. The other half of the plate is adorned with a small portion of coconut almond pineapple heaven. It's a "salad" that is those three ingredients held together with something that I would identify as coconut cream. Just to warn you, the entire thing is cold, which was appropriate as it was 90+ degrees outside. Others at the table ordered more standard meals that were no less exquisite. The chicken tikka masala and the paneer with curried spinach were served alongside beautiful light naan that had perfect air pockets to add a touch of doughiness. Beyond the food itself, the staff was excellent. We were even served some of our food by someone who I took to be the chef. He made sure that we liked our food and even had a conversation with us concerning vegan options on the menu (one of my fellow diners was vegan). It turns out there are many of these options on the menu, they are just not necessarily marked. My suggestion, due to their friendliness, would be to select a "veg", as they are noted on paper, dish and then ask the server whether it contains any animal products. The waiter can probably also point out which ones are which. Overall, a delightful meal in a lovely space. read more

Disappointed, pretty much sums it! We had heard about Cholanad & the mega dosa (Tiger) that they're known for. We live in Morrisville so it's a bit of a drive for us esp. if we were just going to eat and drive right back afterwards. 'Anywho', we decided to make the trip. We got there and were promptly seated (wouldn't expect anything else with the great yelp reviews for this place). Ordered the "Tiger on Diet" Dosa. What a disappointment that was! The potato stuffing was not good at all. I'm using to having traditional South Indian dosa w/ potato stuffing; however, the Tiger dosa was anything but traditional. Also, the service was below par. On two to three occasions, I had to stop a waiter to ask for condiments, water, etc. Overall, bad food quality plus equally bad service and to top it off an expensive restaurant pretty much sums this restaurant. Recently visited with my family. Two children of 8 years and my wife. I wished to be seated at the window. The waiter a bit rude and thinking whether to allow to sit there or not. I got doubt, I should have left that time itself. Masala absolutely unedible as it was way to tomato based and hardly any chilli. Lamb roganjosh had no flavor or taste on lamb at all. Cholanad is probably my favorite Indian restaurant in the triangle. I came here inevitably because everyone and their mom was telling me to check it out. So I finally went, and I'm so glad I did. My husband and I didn't have a reservation and we got seated right away which was great considering it was a Friday night. Samosas for the appetizer and we were off to a great running start. Shrimp Konkani for the main entree. So so good. The sauce is amazing, full of flavor and with rice it's just so delish. The waiter that we had was super friendly, though occasionally forgot to refill my water. The ambiance, the overall service, all really great! I also liked that the restaurant has easy parking so you're not aimlessly driving around for a spot. In general I would definitely recommend this restaurant to other Indian food enthusiasts! read more

I was thrilled to have my birthday lunch at CholaNad... Being South Indian, I crave the flavors from my childhood and was looking forward to lunch. Well, we walked into the restaurant and waited around for a couple of minutes hoping to find a greeter and be seated. When we finally veered around the corner, we found a gentleman who was clearly uninterested and was ensconced in his cell phone. After being seated, we were given menus. I expected a better standard of hygiene in this so-called high-end fine-dining restaurant where the average cost of an entre is $22-$25.. I would appreciate menus that don't have curry fingerprints all over them... and tablecloths which were begging to be stain-treated. Maybe it all works okay in their mood-lit dinner service, but in the bright afternoon sunlit room, the stained table cloth and fingerprint-laden menus made me cringe. Our waiter seemed kinda peeved that we had come in and wasn't particularly genial. Our side dish of tomato pulao came in a bowl with some rice spilling out and looking "half-eaten"... totally a turn off. Not exactly high-end by any stretch of imagination. Then the second dish came in, staggered.. and then the third a few minutes later and finally after a good 15 minutes after the third came the fourth dish... You would think that a table of four people would get their dishes served at the same time... it was off-putting that we all got our dishes staggered... not exactly ideal for the last person waiting on their dish staring at the others chow down their lunches to prevent the food from getting cold. The only saving grace was that the food was good, but the service and the overall cleanliness of the restaurant left a LOT to be desired. I doubt I would ever go back considering the plethora of other delicious, reasonably-priced Indian restaurants in the area, who are eager to please and retain their clientele. Why area, I would just go down Franklin Street to Vimalas or Mint and eat an equally good meal in a more inviting ambiance. In retrospect, my decision to go to CholaNad for my birthday lunch wasn't the best experience. I really hope they pick up their game! read more

I got the chicken tikka masala (a safe bet) with the naan and it was so creamy and delicious. You get a lot of food too. It ain't cheap, but you certainly are getting a lot of flavor and quantity for what you pay. I had the pleasure of trying out Cholanad while I was in Raleigh for a family wedding. We had reserved the front half of the restaurant for our party of around 30 people. We were about half an hour late and had people coming and going at different times, but the restaurant was still so accommodating! From the moment we walked in, the staff was professional and totally on top of things. The food was amazing! We all had Thalis, which consisted of more food than I can even remember. It was the perfect south indian wedding feast, even served on a banana leaf! My favorite item was definitely the daal. I love that this restaurant is modern and trendy while still maintaining the authenticity and flavor of the food. As a California girl, I definitely did not expect to find such good Indian food way out in North Carolina, but I am definitely impressed! read more
