Well this is an update. Haven't been here for a while and certainly it was late at night for "supper", but sometimes you have certain expectations. They were not met on this occasion! This was about 10:00pm on a Saturday night.
On walking in we looked for a table. If the amount of left over plates and cups on most tables that were empty was any indication, it would appear that a large delegation from a small island nation had just left. We had to clear our own table of refuse and wipe it down. Not a good start!
Looking at the menu I went for the San Churro El Grande with chocolate biscuit. I was extremely disappointed at the lack of crushed jaffa as a topping and others I had seen previously (really .. who in their right mind would have a lamington El Grande????), however I thought crushed biscuits might be Tim Tams or the like. Nope .. it was just a crushed chocolate cookie. It was still nice, don't get me wrong, but it lacked the extravagance of what I had tasted on my prior visit.
The real disappointment was yet to come. We saw a new item on the menu called a "Salted Caramel Volcano". The picture looked devine and showed lava flows of salted caramel almost exploding from the top of the banana pudding. Thinking this must be something, especially for 12.95, we ordered, only to be given (in my opinion) a piece of banana cake, a tablespoon of salted caramel, a teaspoon of decorative chocolate and a morsel of ice cream topped with two slices of banana. Perhaps with the amount of salted caramel as shown in the menu I may have been happy, but I doubt it as nothing on that plate justified a 12.95 price tag.
All in all quite the disappointment from our prior visits. We will give it one more chance, and see how that goes. Hopefully everything will improve. I know some things are in the eye of the beholder (like the choice of toppings on our last visit to the ones now), but my whole reason for going there previously was the decadence in the menu. In my opinion the change of toppings (perhaps to reduce costs) robs me of being able to have that feeling of decadence when I visit. read more
