I discovered this bookshop and cafe 3 years ago and I'm still a regular. The owner Stacey is great at giving book recommendations and looks after all customers really well. The coffee needs a special mention because it's really great! Cakes, slices and scones are all homemade and wholesome but the best thing about Mockingbird Lounge is the 5 (yes 5!) rooms of second hand books and heaps of cosy corners to loose yourself in. so I really love books...... I really love coffee.......and I really love Glenelg. So this place is just ideal for me. If you are keen on a new literary adventure I highly suggest coming to this quaint little cafe. What I love about it is it isn't ran by 20 something men and women who are dressed in a rather contrived grandma/grandpa getup. It is a place run by people who love books for people who love books, and it's most certainly not trying to be anything else. No pretentious coffee orders here! plus they have delicious cakes and slices. Try the lemon slice it is delish. Also, I must mention that I do rather admire their old school coffee machine, its the main feature when you first walk in. Book clubs run regularly here and the friendly staff are more than happy to discuss this with you if you are interested. read more

As good as it gets is not as good as this gets... the Mockingbird Lounge is the place you have ALWAYS wanted to go to: a bookshop, filled with nooks and rooms to sit in, where you can drink hot beverages and eat delicious food amongst that library smell - while attempting to beat your opponent at a board game. Is there more you want to ask for? From the front, it looks like a teeny tiny place. You step in the door, and the front counter is laden full of delicious yums to tease you. On most of the walls throughout this beautiful cafe (sorry, Lounge) are tall bookshelves, filled with books beloved by people for you to purchase. Get your Jane Austen collection in a vintage bound book for $10. I'm serious. Walk through the rooms that are filled with chatter and laughter about life and continue out to the back - a formerly shaded area that has been opened up to allow the sun to shine on you. Grab a table amongst your newest friends (you may call them 'other people you haven't met yet') and get your serious game face on. Listen to the hilarious reasonings for why your neighbours who are playing "up words" think their word is actually in the dictionary and that its real. Listen to the ladies discuss the fashion of famous Adelaidian's that they have seen turn up to events. ("Come on, Nicole (identity hidden footballers family member), you're too old to wear that skirt - even though we all want to wear that skirt, we wouldn't"). Listen to the laughter from the studio at the very end of the property - the studio with the BookClub meeting on Saturdays. I had two mugs of delicious coffee, with a white chocolate and raspberry muffin. YUM! Such a fun place to visit - very easy to get to - and now another home-away from home for me near the seaside! read more

Fantastic little bookshop that serves coffee. A homely cosey place that is very welcoming. The staff are great, the food delicious and I know the owner takes personal pride in her coffee! There is always something going on here - book clubs, knitting groups, art exhibitions, author talks! Be sure to go in regularly to see what's going on! I found the Mockingbird a few years ago when it was newly opened. I have been back several times. I go with one friend or with groups of friends, to a poetry group, and take my adult family there for a treat. Everything we have eaten or had to drink has been delicious and often served in an unusual way, with some little extra twist. I love that vegetarian food is on the menu too, so I can take any friends. As well as all that, I liked reading the menu books. My friends and I remember reading those books to our children. When I take my grand-children to Mockingbird, we read one of the book menus, just for fun. The Mockingbird is unique, interesting and local. I love it. Marilyn. read more

"Mockingbird Lounge - Nooks and Nana's" Mockingbird Lounge is filled with nooks and crannies and reminds you of afternoon tea at your favourite Nan's. Filled with wall to wall second hand books and comfy arm chairs you just want to settle in with a pot of tea and a scone for a cosy chat with your best friend. Congratulations to the very enterprising young owner who has created a truly delightful and memorable space. Somewhere quiet to chat, books to browse and yummy, home baked goods - toasted sandwiches, quiche, soup, scones, cakes and biscuits all reasonably priced. On a recent visit I enjoyed a scrumptious vegetarian quiche and garden salad and my friend who specifically wanted no butter on her toastie, was easily catered for. Not the best coffee in Glenelg so I would try the tea if you are a coffee snob and this is the perfect setting to indulge in a pot and a retro china cup and saucer. In addition there are now 29 book clubs running on 2 week nights and 1 afternoon - $10 to join which includes the book of the month to borrow and a cuppa each month. I love this place, especially the 1st Friday of the month wine nights. The newly opened secret garden adds to the charm.

I didn't eat anything but had a pot of peppermint tea which I enjoyed. I really liked the cup and saucer it came in. My son liked his chocolate brownie. He had a lovely little cup and saucer too, which made us both feel fancy and like we were having a tea party. The setting is really great, surrounded by books and craft. I've been a few times and bought gifts each time. Excellent venue with a choice of areas to sit. I really liked it that we felt like we were a bit private, as we had little kids with us, and the disruption to other customers was pretty minimal. It was a bit cold outside, but lovely and warm inside. Lots of books to peruse and possibly buy.The cafe is very close to a good playground which has a fairy garden, which suited us well. Plenty of good parking. I have previously sat in the garden on a lovely day, and really liked that. Room for improvement would be that some of the people running the place could smile a bit more. read more
