Excellent quality products, good service (not like first days, though). Chocolate everywhere!

Now, I don't find it hard to walk past Haighs, ever. not even when it's that time of the month and I may just kill someone for a hit of cocoa. I like to look in the windows but that is about as far as it goes for me, I think this is due to the price of Haighs products. For those of you who have a chocolate allowance each week I say, feast in style, even the wrapping makes my mouth water and if chocolate is your vice then indulge in style. This outlet is smaller than the one on Rundle Mall so if you're looking for huge variety and extravagant gift baskets then perhaps go there. Chocolate Panda = $9.95, it's worth digging up a tenner for this one.

And yes with every purchase, or upon request, you get a little freebie piece of heaven. This is the top shelf stuff, it's the kind of quality only money can buy (and probably a fair bit more coin than you usually fork out for choccies). From the cabinet full of delicious truffles, to the boxed hand-made soft and hard centres, it's all good. For the puritans out there the plain milk block is equally as divine as its more complex counter-parts. And the Speckles remind me of my childhood, albeit a more glamorous one than the real one involving Freckles. If you're trying to cut down on the chocolate (though why would you with a store like this around?) I find it very satisfying to buy the little Teddy Bears or Frogs as one goes further than a hunk of the cheaper stuff. My one big whinge (oh I hate when we fight) was they ran out of most stock the day before Easter - yes RAN out! A testament to their popularity but come on you've been in business for 95 years and all you do is make chocolate which Easter just may have a little something to do with. But Haigh's even with that kind of a right balls-up I just can't stay mad at you. In a nutshell - melts in your mouth!

Don't you just love it when somewhere exceeds all of your expectations? Well say hello to Chocolate…read moreTaperia. This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

For chocolate addicts, it doesn't get much better than this (or worse if you have the "eyes bigger…read morethan stomach" condition like me). Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

While I now believe it would be choco-overload, even for a chocoholic like me, the smell of melting chocolate still takes me to my happy place. No better place in Radelaide for a chocolate factory experience than Haigh's on Greenhill Rd. Even if you haven't pre-planned (like me!) and aren't booked into their free factory tour, the source of all Haigh's premium chocolate visitor's centre is well worth a visit, after all, at 150 square metres it is probably Australia's largest chocolate shop. Before you even reach the front doors the aroma of melted chocolate will draw you in, and if you are lucky the vintage Haigh's truck will be parked out the front. Once inside there is a dazzling array of boxed and loose chocolates, information signage, the factory and helpful staff. Haigh's have been supporting conservation of the Australian native bilby by donating the a portion of the proceeds of sale to Foundation for Rabbit Free Australia. Haigh's also support the pandas through donating proceeds of sales to the Adelaide Zoo, and the Murray Cod, donating a portion of the proceeds of sale to Waterfind Environment Fund that works on improving the health of the Murray river systems. Proudly displayed is their commitment to environmental management, which includes packaging recyclability, energy and water efficiency. Ethical sourcing is also taken seriously, through membership of the Australian Industry Group and World Cocoa Foundation that improves the lives of West Africa cocoa farmers. Due to a loophole (in my mind a gaping, mistaken hole) Haigh's are ineligible for Fair Trade certification - because they use some Australian ingredients. In my mind, using local ingredients is a great thing! Haigh's have a fine array of chocolates made from native Australian ingredients such as the Dark Lemon Myrtle Cream, Dark Quondong, and Milk Wild Lime Jelly. They are available as loose chocolates & in an Australian Selection box with all the above varieties for $36.95. The Dark Strawberry & Pepperberry Ganache is sweet with a hint of green heat from the Tasmanian native pepperberry and is an Australian great chocolate. It is always worth seeking out the Seconds & Experimental area (on my visit to the right of the loose chocolate counter) where you may find a one-off bargain like the fruity white chocolate slab I saw. Upon checking out, the staff will offer to gift wrap your purchase - they even include gift tags - and also a delicious sample, on our visit of the sublimely balanced brandy Christmas pudding.

In addition, they keep stuffing you with chocolate! The chocolate itself is simply delish. I'm a huge fan of dark chocolate and it's one of the best I've tasted in my life. The tour was a good insight behind-the-scenes although no pictures were allowed in the private viewing areas. You can ask as many questions as you like, and probably sample as much chocolate as you want too! Staff were brilliant. The employees here, together with the chocolate, a sheer star combination.
