Chocolate Taperia - Churros & Dessert bar

Don't you just love it when somewhere exceeds all of your expectations? Well say hello to Chocolate…read moreTaperia. This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

For chocolate addicts, it doesn't get much better than this (or worse if you have the "eyes bigger…read morethan stomach" condition like me). Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

It's a very narrow road, made more narrow by the fact that cars are parked along it pretty much the whole way on both sides. So once I finally worked out where this place was, I was really very desperate for a milkshake and a break. OMFG. What a great place! The menu, while not huge, is packed full of extremely appetizing foods and drinks. The chocolate milkshake I had might well be the best I ever experience. It's hard to describe how good it is. I did get a couple of the handmade chocolates to try, and like the milkshake, they were delicious. Service here is excellent. Really friendly. The shop itself is a converted house, and it's beautiful. It really is. It's surprisingly large. If you look at it from the street, you'll have no idea how many people can fit into this palace of chocolatey pleasure. I'm another who would give this place ten stars. Or more.

As well as your fresh produce you can also pick up cold meats and smallgoods, fresh dips and pates, a myriad of Olive varieties, quiches and ready made salads. I personally love their Arrancini which are like risotto balls in a 'to die for' Bolognese sause. Oils ain't oils anymore with what they have on offer at Caruso's in the oil department. You can get your hands on brands and varieties including Pendleton Estate, Lucia's Fine Foods, Maroudas olive oils, Brookfarm Macadamia oil, Jamie Oliver's Avocado Oil, Rice Bran Oil and Azalea Grapeseed oil. There's also a range of coffees, teas and (my personal favourite) chocolates in the store. Caruso's is located about half way down Jetty Road and are directly opposite the end of Waterloo Street.

It isn't the cheapest place to shop but the quality and selection is second to none. It is also very convenient as it has one of the best continental deli sections in the area. This section is headed up by Julie who remembers the names of the regulars and enjoys a chat with them as she slices the meats. They have a wide selection of hams and their short cut bacon is a hit in my family. I love the fact that you can cook a whole meal from this one place without having to venture into a cold impersonal supermarket. You can buy specialty bread, milk, eggs, a variety of cheeses and pasta to go. As a regular, all the staff turn to say hello as I glide past with my trolley. At the checkout, if you are ever there say hello to Ollie, she has been there for years and is good value, always reminding me to get my loyalty card out when I forget. Her till is the one closest to the wall. Tip: If you are buying lots of groceries and your car is a distance away, the lovely staff will help carry your bags to your car door!
