Didn't have what I wanted. But looked pretty good and had a nice selection of chocolates.read more

A few years ago, I was on a tour of a chocolate-making facility interstate. The guide explained…read moretheir chocolate was made using imported cacao butter and that there was only one chocolate maker in Australia who made their chocolate completely from scratch. "Who is that?" we asked, out of interest. "Haigh's", he replied. My Mum and I exchanged smug glances as though just by being from South Australia, we could claim credit for Haigh's dedication to chocolately excellence. I work alarmingly close to the Beehive Corner Haigh's store; close enough to hear the siren song of the salted caramel truffles, the dark chocolate Rocky Road, the chocolate covered coffee beans . . . *focus* The renowned quality of Haigh's is in no doubt. There is usually at least a few people in line and at peak times (Easter, Christmas, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day), there is a constant well-ordered queue of people out of the door, all eager to get into the good books by presenting a quality gift and trying to stop themselves from pointing to the truffle case and declaring "One of each, please!" The staff are always friendly, confirm your purchase and ask if it's a gift or having to travel far, in which case they will put it in a foil bag to resist the SA heat. When the transaction is finished, they'll ask if you'll like to try - "YES, PLEASE!" Whereupon you'll receive a couple of pastilles or broken up pieces to tide you over until you can bust into your bag of goodies. I swear this is true, I actually heard someone refuse their taste one day with a "no, thanks". I hope they're getting the help they need, poor souls. My vision for Haigh's is that one day they open an associated café or pop-up shop; serving their branded hot chocolate, fine coffees and other sweet treats made with the same care they put into their signature product. I'm quite happy to come on board as creative consultant/taste tester. Call me.

Don't you just love it when somewhere exceeds all of your expectations? Well say hello to Chocolate…read moreTaperia. This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

For chocolate addicts, it doesn't get much better than this (or worse if you have the "eyes bigger…read morethan stomach" condition like me). Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

He was slammed and we felt bad so decided to come a few days later. Service was great! Food was pretty good and interesting. We love espresso martinis and got the spiced espresso martini. We saw it had rum instead of the normal vodka. We both didn't like the drink at all... Rum is not our thing but figured we'd give it a try. We got a salad with house made halloumi cheese which was kinda different. Scallops were pretty good but not too exciting. The pear Gorgonzola was pretty good but I'm not a fan of Gorgonzola much so I squeezed a lot of it out. The fish was amazing! That was our favorite dish. And for desert the satanic garden was cute with little grape bunnies! Very cute but was just ok flavor wise.

When we came in at night there was a live singer performing and chatting with us which really amped up the atmosphere, and the dessert was lovely. Lunch was great as well - we got the duck (that sauce is divine), the pork belly (so tender and juicy), the squid ink burger (interesting flavours) and the truffle fries (just yum). Price is a bit on the higher end but it is worth it. Definitely a true contender on the Peel St strip.
