This little dessert bar opened only about a week ago on Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. I snapped a picture of it while it was still being fitted out, a large pink window with the words 'Chocolate Taperia' and a cardboard sign on the door saying 'coming soon'. To tell you the truth I was excited, I'm always excited to try a new dessert bar, but I was also preparing myself to be disappointed. See, all I'd seen was this large pink window that made me think this was going to be a bit too sterile but cutsey to have that real dessert bar charm. Enter last Sunday night, and the pink window is now joined by a few rustic chairs and tables, and the door now opens to a beautifully lit wooden room with antique style chairs and gorgeous wood work. Hello Chocolate Taperia - I think I'm in love. The menu is hispanic, with delicious desserts from Spain and Latin America. It was created by chef Jean-Claude de Toulouse, and he popped over to our table to explain a bit about the menu. It was a nice touch. The Sweet Tapas platters are great for sharing, but try and tackle one yourself and you'll end up wrapping biscuits up in a napkin to take home for later. They sure can be filling. There are 'warm temptations' perfect for winter, and some seasonal desserts. Chocolate Taperia do a good job at pulling off the whole package. Nothing is half arsed (excuse my french), they've put 100% into the menu, the setting, and the service. I'm always rooting for a dessert place that does more than throw together some crepes, waffles, and a fondant and call it a menu. So I hope Chocolate Taperia gets it's name out there as a firm contender on the dessert scene.

Everything from the pressed metal walls to the booths with mini lamp lights and sheer golden curtains creates an aura of luxurious, dark chocolate, I mean wooden, boudoir. The service has been wonderful both times I have been here - friendly, attentive (sometimes a little too much) and always able to manage a large crowd of people (of which there is always one around). A menu of hot and iced chocolates coming in orange, mint, chilli flavours combined with South American herbal teas, coffee and sodas are a nice introduction but lets be realistic you're here for those 2 pages of chocolate based desserts on the menu. I normally pick a chocolate tapas platter to share which changes on a monthly basis just so I can try combinations of dark sticky chocolate with churros or tarts with macarons and mini mousse pots. "Presentation" is the one word I would use to describe the essence of this place. From the carefully decorated dishes to the interior and the staffs manner, it is definitely worth adding to the "best dessert bars of Adelaide," list.

Fear not, I'm here to spill the goss on Adelaide's latest dessert spot (set to lose it's title very soon I'm sure as another dessert opening is always round the corner). The two chefs behind Astonish are Le Cordon Bleu (or LCB to us TAFE kiddies) graduates, originally working in kitchens in Sydney. It really feels like a lot of work and love has gone into this place, and the overall appearance of the store is gorgeous. But hey, as a few other dessert bars around town have shown, it's not all about atmosphere. If you want to have a great dessert bar, well in my books you need great desserts. Astonish try their hardest, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The menu features two sections. The simple things like cakes, tarts, & mousses, and then the more extravagant dine in menu. The smaller stuff is around the $7 mark, but the dine in menu is a little more expensive and will set you back about $12-$18. There are some very interesting (and delicious options), but I did find a few elements of the dishes didn't quite work. The panna fire was an interesting and delicious dish, with a bombe alaska and a slab of vanilla panna cotta. But as a combo they didn't quite work, and would have probably been better as their own stand out dishes. But the giant profiterole on the other hand was amazing, with a crumble on the outer shell that gave great mouth feel, and a filling of ice cream and caramelised banana. YUM. I think Astonish is stil finding their feet, but their desserts are well thought out, with enough pizazz to stay interesting but without going too crazy and alienating some diners. Is it worth the extra price tag? I think so, but I believe that there are a few dessert bars around Adelaide that are worth a lot more than what you already pay.

They have a range of different gateaux, macarons, and even their own homemade ice creams (seriously, how cool is that). Some people call it a dessert bar, but it's really more of a patisserie. They aren't open late and don't have much space, so they don't really fit the dessert bar mould. If there's one issue with the store it's that it's maybe too small to truly sit back and relax in. They'll happily package up any sweets you want to take home, and a cake from here would make a great little gift. Just make sure you're transporting them well, because it would be such a shame to get it home and not have it look as gorgeous as it did when you bought it. Prepared to be amazed.
