Fantastic Brunch was had at Chocobar Cortes. This is a nice modern eatery carrying the Spaniard and the New World's traditional food, appetizers, churros and the delicious hot chocolate, regardless of the hot weather ... it's a must. The service was excellent with the best hostess. As I said the restaurant has a modern look, it is clean and I like that it gets plenty of sun light. If in San Juan, Puerto Rico you will walk la Calle San Francisco, stop by the yellow awning. Have a Choco-tini! Salud!
This place seems like its going to be amazing. The menu is very interesting, but the reality was disappointing. The drinks are all yummy but way too sweet. we got chocolate, lattes, chocolate, coconut, frozen drink, & cappuccino. We should've just got drinks and maybe a piece of chocolate. Ordering food here was the disappointing part. The Chalupitas de mofongo was the most disappointing. The pork was so dry and the chocolate hot sauce tasted so weird/bad. the mini empanadas with guava and cheese were also disappointing. The Chocolate french toast was soggy, but tasted good. I'm not sorry I went, but I wouldn't suggest ordering food here. My friend got the smash burger and liked it. So maybe that. I don't know.
We stopped in this delicious pastry/ lunch spot. Although we did not eat lunch, we ordered a few sweet treats! We ordered some churros and QUESITO CORTÉS The famous Puertorrican cream cheese-filled pastry with a chocolate twist. Both of them were very delicious! The churros were freshly made, and you could see them making them in the kitchen while we waited at the counter.The quesitos were absolutely delicious. If you love chocolate and cream cheese, you have got to order these. The pastry was light and flaky, and the filling was absolutely decadent. We enjoyed the vibrant ambience of this restaurant. Please see photos below. my only reason behind not giving this restaurant five stars was the service. After the Manager saw us getting up to leave because no one was coming back to take our order. He came and insured we got what we needed.
When we went here twice on the same day (first was 8 am and second time was after lunch) to try to get in but they were not accepting customers because of repairs. Third time is a charm. Got seated immediately when we walked in on a different morning. Glad we tried and it was worth it. The atmosphere was casual and the place was clean, nicely lit and cozy. Tried the puertorriqueño which was their hot chocolate. I liked it! Mocha (coffee) was also very good. Huge breakfast with choco pancake was great. I thought I was super hungry so I added crispy chicken. Though the crispy chicken did not have any flavor, they served it with a chocolatey version of what I thought was ketchup. Breakfast wrap was good. Our server Wilmary was very friendly and charming. She anticipated our needs and really took good care of us. I love this place. Good chocolate-infused dishes, service and ambiance. Definitely a must try when in San Juan.
Chocobar Cortés in Old San Juan completely surprised me. I went in skeptical because it looked like it might be a tourist trap--but honestly, it's more like a chocolate lover's trap in the best possible way. Some of the best hot chocolate I have ever had... and I'm literally craving it while writing this. We ended up going twice during our trip--once after feeding pigeons and again on our last day before flying home because we were all thinking about it the whole time. There was a line out the door both times, but we didn't wait more than 5 mins either time. The tables and seating are definitely packed in so be prepared to get cozy with your neighbors. The first visit, we tried a few things: the classic American hot chocolate for the kids (with marshmallows and whipped cream), the Europeo for my husband (so thick, creamy, and rich I almost stole it), and the Puerto Rican hot chocolate for me. Everything came with little cheddar cheese cubes, which I was very skeptical about at first--but after trying it, I completely understood the genius. The sweet and salty combo just works. We also had churros (which I thought had a slightly odd aftertaste the first time), and the guava and cheese empanadillas--which were absolutely incredible the first time around. We couldn't stay away, so we came back again before leaving. This time I had the Vienna hot chocolate and I downed it in under five minutes--it was THAT good. I immediately wanted a second one. We tried churros again (better this time), though the empanadillas were a bit of a letdown on round two. We also tried the kids' French toast, which our daughter didn't end up loving. I had the egg burrito, which was solid and filling, and my husband got the grilled cheese--which I honestly wish I had ordered. It had this slightly smoky, almost s'mores-like flavor from the toasted bread, and it was absolutely delicious. Service was good overall, and even though it's always busy, they keep things moving efficiently. Overall, this place is pure chocolate heaven. Not a tourist trap at all--just a must-visit in Old San Juan.
This place is so cute! I highly recommend. I love the decor and I was shocked to see they had a full menu. My friend is vegan and they had a fried plantain sandwich with veggies and a cornmeal bun. It was yummy and the eggplant inside was so good! Service was a little slow as it took a bit to make her sandwich. They also had a fulll bar in there and offered really cute rum tasting flights. Overall, I would highly recommend!
When my friends and I first arrived, we noticed a line. There was a decent wait, but we got seated within 15-30min. My friend and I decided to share a HUGE BREAKFAST. This dish features eggs, ham, small pancakes & fruits. I liked that they had extra chocolate that you can spread onto these pancakes since it is a chocolate place after all. It was a nice balanced meal. We also decided to share the more unique CHOCOLATE GRILLED CHEESE. I was curious to what it tasted like but it was tasted exactly what it sounded like. It was melted chocolate combined inside a grilled cheese. It was surprisingly not too sweet. The chocolate was nice and warm. Overall, it was a decent breakfast. The chocolate was surprisingly not too sweet. The food was good. Price was decent.

My wife and I had breakfast at Chocobar Cortés in Old San Juan, and it was outstanding! We ordered the Huge Breakfast and shared it. Everything was delicious. The scrambled eggs were incredibly smooth and buttery, the pancakes were fluffy and tasted great with the chocolate syrup, and the chicken strips were perfectly crispy. The Mallorca bread was a nice Puerto Rican touch and paired well with the meal. The sweet hot chocolate was rich and comforting without being overly sweet. You can tell chocolate is their specialty. The atmosphere was excellent--cool and comfortable inside, with reggae music playing in the background. As a Bob Marley fan, I especially enjoyed hearing songs from Bob, Stephen, and Ziggy Marley while we ate. The staff was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service from start to finish. If you're visiting San Juan and looking for a great breakfast spot, I highly recommend Chocobar Cortés. We will definitely return on our next trip to Puerto Rico!
Food gets a 4-5, while service, which was fairly nonexistent, gets a 1-2. We both had the grilled cheese with chocolate sandwich, which was very decadent. I took the advice of someone else on here and added the bacon. Dipping the sandwich in the chocolate chip latte made it even more interesting. My wife added fries, while I tried the mini beef empanadas, which were also quite good. Service was never around. We finished our drinks and wanted more, but we had a hard time ordering them. When we finally did, it took forever to get them. My wife got a soft drink with no ice, which eventually then came with ice, and she waited forever to get it fixed. Same with my second latte. Maybe not having service and taking forever to get your food, get your bill, pay your bill, etc., is a normal thing in PR, but it's not a thing we like.
I love finding a local gem such as this, where the regulars and the founder and her staff shared a warm affection and happiness that showed what a special place this holds in the neighborhood. Started with the single origin coffee and chocolate - a dessert for breakfast . I had the tres huevos con platanos y longaniza (sausage with pickled onions); the sausage was spicy but not ridiculously so, the mashed plantains were rich and full of butter and flavor, and the eggs were perfectly cooked. We wanted a large breakfast as we would not have a chance to have lunch between a hacienda visit and night kayaking...this fit the bill. My wife had the avocado toast with salmon. We expected smoked salmon as is usual but this was a salmon filet - different but delicious. We brought some ground coffee to our rental apartment along with some coconut infused rum and chocolates for later . What a happy and delicious start to our fun day!

Amazing! We were seated quickly. The waitress helped us choose options so we could all share and try different things. We had a couple versions of the chocolate grilled cheese and the Mallorca with ham. Also tried the hot chocolate with cheese. Everything was delicious! These don't sound like combos that would work, yet somehow they do. I even enjoyed the chocolate Ketchup. There are options without chocolate as well but I feel like you're missing the point if you go that route. They have a cute diner atmosphere and we left with additional chocolate purchases. The lotion felt fantastic but unfortunately was too large for TSA so we had to opt out on that one.

Just obsessed with the food, drinks and service!! Always make this a stop when I'm in San Juan! The grilled cheese, the frozen hot chocolate, the churasco with oriental rice! DELICIOSO! I wish it were bigger but would probably lose its charm if they moved. It's a bit of wait, but always clean and the vibes are awesome! There's an art gallery upstairs with some bad a$$ art! read more
Definitely recommend this place in San Juan, PR. What attracted us was the chocolate covered glass old fashion drink on the reviews. This business has been around since 1929! The chocolate art and the way they incorporate their name into their menu and cocktails is unique and creative. Service was good and the whole interior has a fun pop of yellow and they sell a lot of souvenirs. The only con was our food took a while to arrive, the protein in the Puerto Rican bowl was cold. This place is fun. Start off with a classic Puerto Rican delicacy and order yourself the PUERTORRIQUEÑO. It's hot chocolate with a piece of queso de papa (cheese blessed by the pope). You let it sit in the hot chocolate until it gets nice and gooey. Eat the cheese as you finish your drink. I ordered the CHALUPITAS DE MOFONGO which were essentially tacos made out of smashed plantains. You can order it with pernil (pork) or sub it out for salmon. I had it with salmon and was delighted. The fresh pineapple salsa really elevated this dish. It came with avocado and a chocolate dip. Service leaves a lot to be desired. Things moved slow. read more

The line was crazy long for a table (it is also Easter Sunday), but we were able to walk up to the takeout line. Bc it was Easter, they had peep decorated chocolate, which was like flavored. We got the chocolate grilled cheese, which was such an interesting and yummy combo (I could only have one square as it was very decadent). We also got a strawberry and coconut cold hot chocolate, which was delicious. They were passing around samples of their hot chocolate, which was also yummy. Amazing service from Ramon !! The food was fresh and full of flavor. Try the traditional hot chocolate and the choco-latte! I had the Mallorca with guava so good!! The ambiance is nice quiet and had beautiful decor around the restaurant. Also the bathrooms were clean that's a plus LOL. read more

Our second visit! The European (thick) hot chocolate was divine. I asked for a spoon to enjoy it! The passion fruit/chocolate drink was such an unusual delight. Coffee was good. Didn't have a meal but liked the Quesito with chocolate and the truffles. The ambiance is fun and the decor is evocative of their history and place in Puerto Rican food culture. read more

Oh my goodness! We were trying so hard not to go to touristy spots and hope this doesn't fall into that category because we went at least 3 times during our time in PR. After an early flight and checking into our hotel, this was our first stop in Viejo San Juan for lunch. Based off of a friend's recommendation who is from the island, she recommended not to mess the Choco teeny so that was the first order placed. Think cold chocolate, milk spiked! I enjoyed the chocolate rim which seemed to be kind of a hot chocolate mix around the rim. I live for a sweet and savory, experience so this menu was right up my alley after ordering our Chaco team, we also requested the chocolate grilled cheese and the "Chulekan"the massive 32oz. tomahawk pork chop known as "Kan Kan" throughout the island. The chocolate girl cheese was to die for, it had everything that I love, gooey cheese, definitely had some cheese pulled, and the perfect balance of semi sweet chocolate melted within. I was in heaven! Pork chop came with two sides and we were happy to enjoy some delicious Rice and beans. The portion was huge and perfect for two of us to share - with leftovers to spare! We visited the Chocobar in Condado for breakfast on another day -- but came back to the Viejo San Juan location once again a few days later. Will you judge us if we basically got the same thing again? Ha! Grilled cheese, Chulekan (this time with Mofongo), plus a cappuccino and Espresso Chocotinis. In our opinion, these were MUCH better than the Chocotini but we love espresso and coffee, so this was a win. DON'T MISS the chocolate hot sauce! We dipped the grilled cheese and Kan Kan in it - pure heaven. I absolutely love the aesthetics of the Cortés brand and the history displayed on the walls of each location. What a treat to see historical documents, letters, plus vintage chocolate molds lining the walls of the restaurant - so cool! I was sad to hear that their location in New York is no longer, and the DR location is for manufacturing but Cortés has won us over. Oh goodness, you truly can't go wrong here! And it's very likely that we'll keep coming back over and over again. read more

Hands down some of the best coffee I've had--and the fact that everything revolves around chocolate? Total win. The staff is super friendly and you can tell they're proud of their chocolate magic. If you need a chocolate fix with a smile (and maybe a little happy dance), this is the spot to hit! read more
Excellent location in old San Juan. Came in for a quick bite. The Mallorca sandwich (minus the ham) and the eggplant sandwich were both excellent. Also had the chocolate milkshake and the madeleines which were also good but could have been a bit softer. Overall loved the ambience of the place and huge space inside. read more

Absolutely loved our experience at Chocobar Cortes! We had their Latin smash burger along with their jamon Serrano Croquettas (we know it sounds weird but trust the process)! Also, ignoring the hot July heat in PR, their 70% dark hot chocolate is a must if you're visiting! Ambiance is fun, clean, and refreshing (great AC). Service was also top level! read more

Cocobar Cortés does a very good job with their offerings. We had the chocotini and moctezuma hot chocolate drink, both of which were delicious. We also had the ham and Serrano croquettes which were fresh and hot. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The ambiance is standard but well managed in terms of service and quality. read more
Great place with unique food options that all incorporate chocolate! The calamari is delicious, the chocolate grilled cheese is interesting and definitely a fun thing to try with a group so everyone can have a bite or two. The chocolate old fashioned is my favorite adult beverage and the chocolate espresso martini is generous and tasty. Great chocolates, baked items and gifts are also available for purchase. Lines can get long there especially on days when cruises are un port so plan for a wait. read more

We stopped in for brunch and had no regrets! The open croissant was perfect for a light protein boost while my husband indulged in the chocolate French toast. The chocolate is creamy and high quality. It melts in your mouth! Would highly recommend to my friends and family. read more
How delicious. We came here after our walking tour for refreshments. My husband loves chocolate, and it was his birthday so this spot was perfect. To eat, we shared the beef empanadas, and tostones with guacamole. To drink, my husband had the chocolate old-fashioned; the chocolate rim really made this cocktail such a delight! I had the choco martini, which was just perfect, and not overly boozy! So, I could enjoy the chocolate and creamy flavors, not to mention that smooth texture as I sipped. I found it refreshing. We wanted to revisit on another day, but unfortunately, it was closed due to repairs or something. Needless to say, nice place, food, drinks, and service. and when we visit again, Chocobar will certainly be on our list of to-do's. :) read more

Stopped in for breakfast and were seated right away. The location is small but spacious enough to not feel overcrowded. I ordered the avocado toast - it was just ok. I think the bread to avocado ratio is off - needs a thinner slice of bread or far more avocado. My partner ordered the longaniza omelette and enjoyed the unique flavor. The service was very slow, especially when we were done eating as we had to flag down the server to request the check. Definitely room for improvement. read more
