The slices of fish in the chirashi bowl melted in my mouth and they added just the right amount of rice to the dish. And the miso ramen had the softest ramen noodles - I really enjoyed the texture. The broth isn't as rich as some others and I appreciated that, but I did feel that it was missing a kick. Overall, I had a good experience and would dine here again. A good little date spot for a quick dinner.

I came for dinner this week with visitors from Japan, who were impressed by how authentically Japanese and delicious everything was. Unfortunately, I don't have photos, but we chose the restaurant week menu, which included: 1. Japanese potato salad 2. Choice of kushiage, chicken nanban or kinpira salad--I chose kushiage, which came with 3 pieces 3. Choice of kaisen don, signature burger or shoyu ramen--the burger looked very tasty, but I was in the mood for Japanese food, so I chose the kaisen don 4. Homemade soft serve with choice of strawberry, mango or melon sauce--I chose melon, which was nice We also tried sparkling tea from Copenhagen, which was very refreshing. The restaurant was busy but the servers were friendly and we had a wonderful meal. Looking forward to trying more dishes next time.

We started with the Mix Tartare, where the combination of tuna, salmon and yellowtail was fresh and flavorful, and the crispy wonton chips added the perfect crunch. The Truffle Kani Roll was a favorite -- creamy and flavorful with avocado, plenty of crab on top, and a subtle truffle flavor. It was a little different from the sushi rolls we usually order and definitely worth trying. We also had the shrimp katsu, which was perfectly crispy on the outside with big, juicy pieces of shrimp inside. The creamy dipping sauce paired really well with it. For ramen, we tried the Shoyu Ramen, which was warm and comforting with a flavorful broth, tender chashu, bamboo shoots, scallions and a soft-boiled egg. It was a nice addition to all the smaller dishes we shared. Overall, everything tasted fresh, was beautifully presented, and we really enjoyed being able to try a variety of dishes. A great Japanese spot in NYC that I'd happily come back to!

nonono served up some solid izakaya food including a wide variety of yakitori and other fun bites!…read more My favorite dish of the meal was their cod cream noodle. As a fan of all fish roe and especially mentaiko, the cream and fish roe balance was well done. Loved the addition of shiso leaves to add a bit of herbaciousness to cut the richness of the cream. The udon was nicely cooked al dente and remained chewy throughout. Yakitori options range from chicken, beef, and veggie options. The chicken meatball was flavorful. Although I wish the chicken thigh and beef tongue were a little more tender, I did like their seasoning. The enoki pork wrap came with a soy/ginger sauce which served as a nice appetizer. Their smooth chawanmushi featured additional ikura and seaweed which amplified the umaminess; however because of the steam/heat, kinda overcooked the ikura a little bit, so be sure to eat it quick! The tartare combined a bunch of different fresh fish with some tamago and tossed in a light soy sauce. I liked how the wasabi wasn't too strong or overpowering but still present enough to preserve the freshness of the fish. The corn ribs were good but nothing crazy or different from other places. The space is cute and cozy with lots of natural lighting. They have two floors, an area with bar seating, and upstairs with more tables/nook area for more privacy. Staff were polite. Food came out quick on a weekend.

Half of their menu is vegan-friendly. Spoiler alert: they will open a permanent location in June/July! *Chicken Karaage*** This chicken karaage was TO DIE FOR -- the caramelized sugar lemon on the side took it to a whole new level. The boneless chicken was so tender and juicy with a thin deep-fried batter. The meat was extremely refreshing after squeezing the lemon and dipping in honey mustard sauce. * Handrolls - Salmon Yuzu, Tuna, Yellowtail** Y'all need to order their handrolls! The sashimi piece was thick and long enough to cover the vinegar rice. It would be a pain to pick which handroll I like more. They layered up the flavors of each piece with house sauces, shiso leaf, fried leek, avocado etc. Wish they would add a handroll set in the future. *Pork Cutlet Curry The curry was a blend of shredded meat, mashed potatoes, tomatoes and grapes (yes grapes!). The pork loin cutlets were crispy and not heavily breaded. The meat was a bit dry, yet it was cut in thin slices so it didn't bother me much. I found the multigrain rice even more enjoyable than white rice with its crunchiness. *Matcha Crème Brûlée** WE LOVED THIS. Matcha flavor is strong. The caramelized top and creamy matcha custard complemented really well. Trust me, their crème brûlée is the best dessert to finish off your meal. *Vegan Matcha Cheesecake This cheesecake was homey and light. Matcha flavor was tasteable but not very strong. The raspberry compote added a nice touch to it. I liked the crunchy biscuit layer on the bottom. *Yuzu White Peach Sparkling *Virgin Green Tea Mojito Their Japanese-inspired mocktails were great and not too sweet (very rare for mocktails). Very refreshing to drink along with your meal.

Starting off with the Agedashi Tofu: Three pieces of tofu in tsuyu sauce. Light and crispy, with a savory but not too salty broth. It came with fried enoki mushrooms. Some grated radish would've been a nice touch. Chicken Karaage: This was my personal favorite. The chicken pieces were tender and juicy, while crispy on the outside. The portion came with a decent amount of chicken which was shareable between three. Shoyu Ramen: Not a standout dish, but seeing as it's not specifically a ramen restaurant, it was standard! Not amazing but not bad. Pork Cutlet Curry: As someone who loves Japanese curry, this hit the spot! Warm flavorful curry with crispy tonkatsu. However, I think it would taste better served with fluffy white rice! Also I think it was served with a side of grapes which was seemed odd unless it's a new food trend I'm unaware of. Overall, would definitely come back! They seem to do fried foods well, hopefully they can introduce tempura or a katsu sando would be amazing.

The restaurant was full at the counter however only a few tables in the back. Our server was often always standing next to our table, attentive and observant with our needs. I really liked that we had the option to get as many omakases as we wanted and/or order as many a la carte menu items. Many Japanese omakase restaurants do not allow this! And I never understood this either. We ordered 3 omakases to share amongst 2 people, and then a ton of a la carte dishes to share. Which were such a beautiful compliment to our omakase dishes. We got the "O" which was a 9 course meal with some cooked and raw options. From the a la carte menu, we ordered the chicken karaage, agedashi tofu, hamachi kama, clay pot rice with salmon and roe, sukiyaki noodles, 2 different rolls (tuna and salmon) and of course the uni taster (which were 3 different kinds of sushi from California and 2 from Hokkaido). The agedashi tofu was the worst amongst our group for a weird texture, definitely did not feel like tofu. The best dishes were the uni taster, chicken karraage, and hamachi kama all from the a la carte menu. And from the omakase, definitely the sushi platter (which were 10 pieces of sushi) and the soba noodles were so amazing! The sushi rice here were so delicious! This is how you can tell a authentic sushi restaurant vs not. Overall, definitely recommend and absolutely order a la carte to get a full tasting of the dishes.

Apparently There's No Such Thing as Too Hot for Ramen!…read more I was working from my Midtown office, which is ALWAYS freezing , so despite it being a hot day in NYC, ramen sounded like the perfect lunch. Instead of taking the easy route and ordering delivery, I decided to walk over to Kushi Kushi Yaki to get some fresh air -- and, more importantly, escape the Arctic tundra that is my office. The restaurant is small but really nicely decorated and felt warm and inviting. As soon as I walked in, the waitress/hostess greeted me and offered me a seat. I let her know I was ordering to-go, and she immediately handed me a menu so I could make my selection. I quickly landed on the Tantan Ramen -- chicken broth, seasoned ground chicken, soft-boiled egg, hot oil, bok choy, scallions, and chili paste. And OMG, it was SO good! Flavorful, comforting, with just the right amount of heat. Exactly what I needed! The price was also a pleasant surprise! The ramen was listed at $18 on the regular menu, but it was only $15 as part of the lunch special. For a filling and delicious lunch in Midtown Manhattan, I thought that was a pretty good deal. I was also really impressed with how thoughtfully they packed the ramen for takeout. The broth came in a larger container, while all of the ingredients were packed separately in a smaller container that fit perfectly inside. No soggy noodles or ingredients sitting in broth during the walk back to the office! My only small critique is the shape of the broth container. It was pretty tall and narrow, which made everything a little difficult to stir once combined. A wider, more rounded container would make eating it much easier. Overall, delicious ramen, friendly and efficient service, great takeout packaging, AND a solid lunch deal. I'd absolutely go back -- even when my office isn't freezing me out!

The food was well executed, but the flavors didn't quite stand out for me. I had the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen, which was pretty good with nicely cooked noodles, but the broth felt a little one-note. Since yakitori is their namesake, I also tried the 7-skewer combo along with the chicken skin and gizzard. The skin and gizzard were excellent, and the bacon-wrapped baby corn and cherry tomato from the combo were standouts. Everything was cooked well, but I wasn't a huge fan of the tare, which leaned pretty salty and lacked some balance. The lychee mango cocktail pouch was fun but nothing particularly memorable. Overall, a good spot for the atmosphere, service, and some standout skewers, but the food didn't quite wow me.
