Came here with two other people without a reservation. We were seated quickly. I ordered the lemonade and the cheeseburger deluxe- medium temperature. I will say the cheeseburger was disappointing. My bread was soggy. I assume they may have let my burger sit while the other person who ordered their burger well done had their burger made. The tomato was also soggy if this makes any sense. The middle part of the tomato looked pruny yet soggy as if it wasn't fresh. I took it out of my burger completely. The burger did not have much flavor otherwise which was quite disappointing. When I think of diners I think burgers and fries and this is not the place I will be going for this. The lemonade was good but not a Homerun. The server was nice and attentive. We were in and out pretty quickly which I did like. They had a deck of conversation cards on the table which we used. The cards were really worn, but interesting questions nonetheless. read more

This diner is usually the only diner that is open late at night which is why I go to it. Their food is exceptional but not my favorite. They have some good desserts, I'd recommend those. The service was good but there was a cranky hostess when I went, but I didn't mind him. The ambiance was cute, I got to sit next to the windows in a booth looking out the view. read more

To call this my favorite diner while growing up in the Jersey area exposed to diners galore is huge statement. My sister and I come here almost weekly and always leave feeling satisfied, and full. While we have tried a few different breakfast menu items in the past such as a the shashuka, omelette, sandwiches -- we always divert back to our favorites which are their pancakes, and egg hash. These pancakes are the most fluffiest, softest, pancakes that literally come piping hot and melt in your mouth. If you love pancakes -- skip the gimmicky pancake houses and try a stack here. The hashes we get to pair with our sweet item often times is a meat lover or corn beef hash that has perfectly cooked eggs (I order them sunnyside up) and is both crispy and warmed throughout. Aside from the food -- the service is stellar. The waiters are always providing us with refills, and you never are left feeling neglected even during their peak operating hours. While I first fell in love with this diner for their interior decor (which is Alice in Wonderland themed), I quickly became a regular due to the diner just consistently exceeding my expectations. The service here is absolutely horrific, have gone many times and each time gave the benefit of the doubt to support neighborhood business. The food quality had become less than mediocre, pretty ambiance . Tonight had a waiter who walked away and didn't return in the middle of the order. I informed the manager who appeared unconcerned. We will never return. read more

This place was a pleasant surprise. It was on a Saturday early afternoon and it was really busy, fortunately for us it took only 5 minutes to have us seated. The waiter and manager were both excellent in their service and made great conversation between myself and guests throughout the course. I started off with a Rumchatta Cold Brew and it was absolutely amazing as this was on their brunch menu. When it comes to how extensive this menu is, it's as extensive as Cheesecake Factory meaning the kind of variety of choices in meals as Chit Chat has breakfast, lunch and dinner items and best of all they are open 24 hrs! I had the Northwest Scrambled which came with mushrooms, bacon and bleu cheese crumbles which was delicious which came with a generous size of hash browns as well. I was able to sample the Ahi Tuna which was also amazing once accompanied with the sauce and again the portions were extremely generous. I will be visiting Chit Chat to sample their lunch and dinner items without a doubt sooner than later. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I lived in this area for far too long (kids etc.) now I live in NYC where peeps frequently NJ Are afraid to go. Not half as scary as here. saw the waiter dish out a fruit bowl - looked good- ordered with cheese. got huge plate with red stuff all over it and a lecture about how I should have read their 5 page menu. huh? Got back bowl of fruit and separate bowl of c.cheese ,impossible to combine as bowls were too small. Can't wait for the check! Hostess still arguing. (Was told she used to be a therapists can't imagine why that didn't work) Going home to NYC where at least ordering in a diner seems a lot safer to me. (feel lucky that I didn't choke on the paper put on bottom of cottage cheese bowl). read more

I remember when we first went here, and we were so hyped. I don't know if it this time around it was because of the time or if they fell off their game. The waiter was friendly and observant, I like when they don't hover to give you that rush feeling, he gave us the space and knew when we were done and didn't ask 1000 times if everything was good. My food however, was not hot but warm, and the fries were mixed of stale and fresh, with it being more stale than fresh. But that's not the waiters fault but is a super contributing factor of losing stars. I've dined here several times due to the proximity to the Eagle Rock Observation area. Generally good food and service. Had a very good chicken quesadilla yesterday. It was packed with diced chicken and cheese with sides of salsa, & sour cream, guacamole. Very good. My friend had an omelette and said it was delicious. Service was great-very efficient. Decided to get a choc chip cookie for the road and it was definitely stale, dry and awful. -- Note-mistakenly added to incorrect location. Should have been the Orange location but can't seem to delete this. read more

A seemingly popular spot with interesting decor (a la beetlejuice) and a big menu for breakfast, brunch and lunch (many things with a spanish twist). We came on a Saturday morning and there was a bit of a wait, surprisingly. Once we got seated and finally ordered, the food came out very quickly. The portions were sizable and they do give an option for toast, which is probably to forgo unless you're really hungry. Service was pretty good as well. The parking lot can get crowded and there's a BP gas station next door. read more

The food is here is really good, comes really fast and tastes fresh. The decor is funky/retro, there's plenty of seating/parking. The only thing i found really weird is an iced latte is $9?! and it comes in a super small cup. i was shocked , not even high end coffee shops are that expensive. Okay so this is my third time here and each time my experience gets better! The staff and service is always impeccable! The first time here I had Italian Mushroom soup and my mom and I split an Asian salad (huge portions). The second time we had late night chicken and waffles (always hits the spot). The third time we had pancakes and the (most amazing) Mexican Chilaquiles with salsa verde. It was on the brunch menu and also came with your choice of a mimosa or Bloody Mary. If you can, go to the other location in West Orange. I ordered soda (which I never buy) and it was flat. I usually never want to be THAT customer, but I informed our server about this, and they said "It's not flat". Not saying the customer is always right, but if I'm getting charged extra, I do expect the drink to be carbonated. Food was delicious, but the serving size of the fries was less compared to the location in West Orange. This seems to be either the chefs in the kitchen consolidating product, or the manager did not order enough inventory. Could've been worse, but for the price and experience I would have gone to a mediocre diner that was cheaper. read more

Chit Chat is difficult to review as it kind of blurs the line between a diner and a fine dining establishment. The interior doesn't resemble any diner that I've seen before. A unique, somewhat eclectic blend of stripes, squares, colors and decor. Not sure what they are going for but it kind of works in a strange way. The menu is much the same. It includes some classic diner fare. Breakfast items, burgers, salads and sandwiches. However, a large section of the menu is focused on higher end entrees that one would typically find in a fine dining establishment. I ordered the Pan Fried Salmon. A nice thick Salmon filet crusted with herbs in an oregano lemon sauce. Expertly prepared. It truly was one of the best pieces of Salmon I have ever eaten. My wife ordered the Stuffed Filet of Sole which was outstanding as well. A nice portion of Sole stuffed with an abundance of fresh crab meat and very little breading. Both dishes were beautifully prepared. Sorry, I dropped the ball and accidentally deleted the pictures. The service was a bit lackluster. Our server seemingly forgot about us. We sat around for 20 minutes after we finished our meal waiting for her to deliver the check. 5 Stars for the food. 3 Stars for the service. I will definitely dine at the Chit Cat again. read more

Chit Chat is a pretty average Jersey diner. Their food is decent and they have an expansive menu. What appeals to me most is that they're open 24 hours. It's also convenient that they're located right off of Route 17 so it's pretty accessible. My most recent visit was around 3AM. I was out celebrating a friend's birthday and naturally our group got tired of drinking and sought out some food. There were a lot of people but we were seated promptly; the space is pretty big. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I had the Texas burger. I ordered it medium but I think it was closer to medium well. Regardless the burger was tasty and satisfied my hunger. The order came with waffle fries but it seems like the serving of fries was a bit small. I've had other foods at other visits here and I've never been disappointed. My main gripe is that their prices are a little higher than other diners. They do have a box of cards filled with "conversation starters" to encourage conversation; ergo 'Chit Chat'. I'll definitely be back here at some point. read more

My manager and I decided to grab lunch at this location. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. The parking lot is fairly small fyi. I walked in and was greeted and sat by the manager. We were served by Caterina and she was cool. We started with drinks and my manager got an uptown and I got homemade lemonade and it was very tasty. For my meal I got the vegetable stir fry. They don't have this on the menu but I got the chicken teriyaki rice without the chicken. It was very tasty. My manger got the steak and eggs and he liked his meal. The meal I had came with a soup and it was butternut squash soup, and while I was skeptical I was pleased because it was pretty good. We both had a good experience. read more

Had a 2 hour break for work and decided to stop by this diner. Let me just say...as far as diners go, this is hands down one of the absolute best I've been to. Aesthetically it looks beautiful outside, super clean. Inside, the decor and everything is really beautiful & clean also. I ordered a hot latte & the 3 Baked Eggs and absolutely LOVED it. Quite a hefty portion & is SO well priced. And the dish tasted amazing too. Honestly, no complaints. The tables also have a chit chat box with things to discuss which is a fantastic little addition. This is the best diner - period. It's my go-to any time of day: it's an all-around good restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If I want a good burger, this is the place. If I want a good, casual dinner, I come here. All the staff is great. read more

I used to love coming here, until my last encounter. I ordered a cookie monster milkshake to go and after consuming it, found a broken nail mixed with the garnish of the cookies. Even I unfortunately bit into it! Disgusting and unsanitary! Addressed it to the managers (Andy and Nico). It seems the managers do not know the proper action to take when addressing these issues. read more

What a neat place! I was headed to the post office in Hackensack late at night and the warm lights inside Chit Chat called to me. I LOVE quirky NJ diners. So many of them, yet so little stomach room. Need to be discriminate. Find the best of the masses. This one is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. There are checkerboard patterns and whimsical touches. I wasn't hungry, but a hot chocolate sounded doable. Decided I could get something to try and take the bulk of it home. Went with the recommended Cheese Steak. It was a large portion and surprisingly tasty. Real cheese and chopped steak, not of the processed meat variety. The staff was attentive and friendly. The desserts looked outstanding, but they were huge and I wasn't willing to tempt myself into getting a piece and then accidentally eating the whole thing. Another day. Another diner. Don't park in the lot between buildings. Park in the designated diner parking lot, and order the carrot cake for me. I would've if I could've! read more

Stopped by for a late dinner on our way back from college drop off. Super friendly staff. The pies and cakes were excellent diner quality. I had the Llomo Soltado and was not disappointed. The accompanying salad was very fresh. While not Michelin quality it matched my expectations and would definitely recommend. read more

Chit Chat gets the job done. I was starving and with a lot of diners around me closing around 11 I showed up here around 10pm. I hate being that last minute patron. We were seated right away, I just wanted some soup and chicken fingers. Had to satisfy my cravings. Chicken noodle soup was good, the chicken tenders were nothing special but again, hit the spot. Their fries are not the seasoned kind so they're not my favorite but again, got the job done. The staff was definitely underwhelming but it's a night shift so I understand. Parking is plenty and the desserts looked great. read more

The salad, on the other hand, was a near triumph. Served on a large platter, there was a small field of well-seasoned chicken, shredded cheddar, vegetables, avocado, pico de gallo, and - best yet - some pieces of warm, toasted pita. I even sprinkled some pieces of bacon from my burger into this salad, and wow did that take it over the top. I dug into this salad with fair gusto and would absolutely come back for it...which is saying something, since I wouldn't expect to fall in love with a salad at a diner. I cannot review this diner based on food. I didn't stay long enough to eat anything. I went with a friend after church on Sunday for lunch/brunch. She had been to this diner once before. The coffee was decent for diner coffee. My one sip of the fresh orange juice that I got as a non-alcoholic drink to accompany my order from the Sunday brunch menu was good. I was excited and curious to try my breakfast risotto and my friend was hungry and waiting for her egg white omelet to arrive. And that's when it happened. A huge brown cockroach crawled out onto the wall of our two-person booth, inches from my friend. Thank goodness she wasn't leaning on the wall. She yelped (!), grabbed her purse and leaped out in one motion. I screamed and took off as well. The owner was nearby and was kind of nonchalant when we told him about the roach. At first he said, oh, we'll move you. Um, no, you won't because we're not staying, in fact we're not coming back ever. If there is a roach of that size, crawling out into an occupied booth on a sunny Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm, can you imagine how many roaches there are that we can't see? It's disgusting. My friend is too nice. She asked the staff and owner if they were going to charge us for our coffee so that we could pay and leave. They didn't charge us and even if they had, I wouldn't have paid! As we were leaving, we saw the staff and owner looking around the booth, shrugging their shoulders and trying to make it seem like there wasn't anything to our claims. Thankfully there was a man in the larger booth across from ours and he was pointing out where it had been. UGH I'm getting all grossed out again just thinking about it. So, just beware. This experience really makes me wonder about this diner's cleanliness. Clearly they have a roach infestation. read more

First of all, they actually know that a Greek Salad is supposed to have Romaine lettuce - which seems to be a first in my experience of New Jersey eateries. We wentt here for brunch last Friday and have returned EVERY day since to enjoy EXCEPTIONAL meals and service each time. I enjoy the ambiance - not only of the venue, but of its clientele as well. Fashionable customers even when dressed for the gym. Professional experience on EVERY level. And THAT is really something coming from me! I almost didn't want to write this review because I don't want to have to wait to be seated. But I'm pretty sure now that this will not be a problem for me in the future, as they know me by name now. I used to come to Chit Chat Diner weekly with my partner. We were regulars--the staff was always warm, the food solid, and they even remembered my usual order (Spanish scramble with tater tots). For a long time, it felt like a second home. But on 9/5, the diner chose to host a planned, televised campaign event for Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli. This wasn't a surprise visit--it was a deliberate choice to give him a platform. Ciattarelli's agenda includes cutting essential public services, rolling back environmental protections, weakening police accountability, restricting voting access, and pushing policies that will make life harder for working families, immigrants, and marginalized communities. I cannot continue to support a business that elevates the voice of someone advancing a harmful, regressive agenda. Call me dramatic, but silence or compliance in moments like this is exactly how we end up sliding further into a fascist state. There are countless diners and small breakfast spots in New Jersey that I can choose to support instead. Thank you for the memories--but this left a bitter taste I can't forgive. read more

OPEN 24 HRS! they deliver and they cater!!! i am so impressed.. i have used them for some events and so far they have been great! the platters looked beautiful! I have read some of the bad comments and i guess some people are just too hard to please. It can be a little expensive for some people but they definitely give you your money's worth. LARGE portions and great quality! LOVE their specials.. i love trying new things when i go out to eat and they always have new and exiting dishes on the menu !! Their dessert selection is absolutely delicious! Try their red velvet cake or the big fat chocolate!! LOVE ! LOVE ! On a busy Sunday, we had 2 "special consideration" people in our party, and manager/hostess/whomever thoughtful enough to seat us promptly rather than make us/them wait. That is outstandingly considerate! One in our party had a very fussy food request, and they accommodated it without a problem. Again, very considerate! The food was on par with standard diner fare. Hash browns were potato shavings which were slightly crispy on the outside, soft/mushy in the middle, so not really want you're looking for there, but other things were reportedly pretty good. Father-in-law reported that his Diet Coke (or Pepsi?) tasted a little off, but waitress did refill my glass without my having to ask. Not super-loud or (though completely full) were tables/chairs squashed together. Seemingly complete menu. All considered, very positive. For some unknown reason this place has only achieved an average of 3.5 stars. . Our waitress was bright, cheerful and bubbly. She gave us sufficient time to decided and was extremely helpful. We started with the pad thai egg roll , For dinner we all had our picks from the daily specials which you would never think you were in a diner with the choices they put out . Each meal was fresh and bursting with flavor! I highly recommend their puff pastry wrapped chicken w/ rasperries & goat cheese.... The Red Snapper that my friend had was out of this world. Fuck these racist pieces of shit. Tried to have a nice little dinner with my wife and 6 year old, but then my wife took our daughter to the bathroom and was shortly after harassed by a customer invading her and my daughter's privacy in a stall, demanding my wife explain what she was doing in there. My wife said she was fine and the crazy lady continued to escalate the situation and then a man who works there goes into the women's bathroom to ask what was going on, and then the manager. The audacity and rudeness of the crazy customer is one thing but then the staff being condescending to my wife and then only apologizing to the white lady is obscene and disgusting. I had an issue with the service last year and never went back. I was doing business at the Chase bank and figured a year later all would be well....unfortunately not! It took over 50 minutes to get my matzoh ball soup, followed by my burger melt with fries...the plate for the meal was hotter than the fries & burger! I immediately made the server aware how cold my fries were, he apologized and came back with THE SAME FRIES! How do I know this? I sprinkled black pepper at the bottom of the fry dish...and guess what came back? Now being late for work and a crappy meal, the only saving grace was that the meal was comped. my boy friend and i love chit chat!!!! We figured out why they called it Chit Chat Diner...there are these little glass cubes filled with cards that each have a topic of conversation. So cuuutte for a first date. I know practically everything about the person I was with BUT it was still interesting. We shared wings and a texas burger. With out us even having to tell our waitress, she brought out our burger cut in half on two seperate plates with some waffle fries. She won us over lmao. The music was good. The Chit Chat has got to be one of the best diners I've visited in New Jersey, and I've been to plenty, in both north and south Jersey! The decor may be a little cheesy but ignore it and order the Asian short rib sandwich. Yummmm! Never seen anything like that offered in a "typical" diner. So many worker-bees, so slow and poor service. Decor is cute, but after trying it about 6 or 7 times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I found the same issues- inattentive waitstaff; 2 "owner-manager types" guarding the place, but not recognizing flaws. And they have the nerve to charge for ice tea refills!!! Don't even try the eggs Benedict. This is my first Yelp review. The management was so bad it made me want to create an account in order to warn others about how horrible the owner was. He had an attitude problem. Service was horrible food is mediocre. Won't be returning. They're far better diners in the area. I will make sure to Yelp before dinning out anywhere. I had a very unpleasant experience at Chit Chat Diner. When my food arrived, the utensils were visibly dirty and had a large piece of hair on them, which was absolutely disgusting. When I brought this to the waitress's attention, she was extremely rude and refused to provide plastic utensils as an alternative. Only after I insisted that they show me the credit slip I had signed did they say "oh yes, we charge extra for using a credit card." I know some places do that these days, but (1) if there was fine print on the menu indicating they do this it certainly wasn't prominent enough (2) the bill should have had a notice there was an extra charge for paying with card (3) not returning the bill with the credit slip shows that they were counting on my not noticing (4) gaslighting me that I must have been wrong about the credit slip instead of simply saying "oh, that's the credit card charge" is really sleazy (5) the actual discrepancy was more than the 3% they claimed was the charge for using a credit card. I wouldn't really care that much about the fee if they were straightforward about it, but I really object to this kind of underhanded behavior. It left a bad taste in my mouth. We won't be back.

We arrived a little after 9pm. The service of the young server was perfect. He was prompt, polite and attentive to our needs. The food was as good as you can get at a highway diner. We got what we expected and enjoyed it. Desert, however, is another story. D is allergic to anything that contains caffeine. That means no coffee, tea, certain pain medications and NO CHOCOLATE. She asked me to go to the display counter and see what kind of cheesecake there was. There were many different kinds: mango, orange, caramel, banana and more. Unfortunately, this diner's idea of garnishing a desert is with a creme topping loaded with CHOCOLATE STICKS, CHIPS, AND COOKIES! (see attached photo) EVEN THE DESERT LABLED VANILLA CAKE WAS FESTOONED WITH CHOCOLATE HOO-HAH! When I mentioned this to the management, I was told, "Well, we have rice pudding and baklava." No matter how I worded it, he just couldn't seem to comprehend that a good 90+% of his deserts had chocolate which was discriminatory against people who are allergic to chocolate. I even tried to put it in another reality for him. I asked if their baker made anything with peanut or peanut butter. He replied in the affirmative. I asked if they had a special preparation area so that there were safe deserts for a child with a peanut allergy. He didn't seem to understand the premise. So, if you, or your child have ANY food allergies, I strongly suggest that you avoid the Suburban Diner at all costs. We will be doing so in the future.

They have daily specials and a decently sized menu so there were plenty of options to choose from. My BFF went the breakfast route with a hash plate and pancake and I went the lunch route with French onion soup and fries. The soup was DELISH and the fries were nice and crispy! My BFF said her hash was amazing along with her blueberry pancake. Our server Maria was top tier and ensured we had everything we needed and consistently checked on us to make sure we were good. I'll definitely be back!
