A bit of trivia---New Jersey is the state that has the most diners. Having never eaten in a New Jersey one before, I was eager to try Chit Chat---especially now that our daughter lives nearby.
We came here on a Wednesday night around 7 p.m. and while the place was doing a good business, they were able to easily seat our party of seven.
Like many diners, the menu is like a book which makes deciding what to have not an easy task. Our waiter was prompt and friendly if a bit scatter brained. (He almost forgot to ask my husband what he wanted for dinner!) He showed up to take our drink orders first which gave us time to look at the "book".
I decided to try the tuna melt sandwich as it is something not often seen on menus these days. To me, a tuna melt is some tuna salad and American cheese in between 2 slices of bread, then it is grilled. I figured that it would not be a heavy meal so I also ordered a cup of chicken noodle soup. Was I wrong about the tuna melt! Their menu describes it this way "homemade tuna salad on grilled rye with grilled sliced tomatoes topped with American cheese, served with fries". What arrived was an open-face sandwich with each piece of rye bread being topped with a tomato (that wasn't grilled), a large scoop of tuna salad and a piece of melted American cheese. Add to that, a very large portion of fries. This could have easily fed 2 people! Although it is the weirdest tuna melt that I've ever seen, it was tasty and the fries were okay. One thing that I really liked---the sandwich also came with coleslaw and a dill pickle half. The chicken noodle soup was quite decent with a generous portion of noodles, a flavorful broth and a decent amount of celery and carrots. The chicken was cubed pieces of white meat that was very tender.
My husband had the turkey club which is described this way "Turkey club with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo" plus it had fries a dill pickle half and coleslaw on the side. This sandwich was humongous! My husband couldn't even finish it all. He said that it was good, however. We both liked the cole slaw as it was simply dressed, crunchy and had good flavor. We both liked the dill pickle half.
Our daughter had a dish called "Chicken Amoure". It was on a page of entrees that came with a house salad or soup and either a glass of house red wine or a beer. She chose a beer plus she had a cup of matzo ball soup, which she said was okay. She found her dish to be bland as she didn't taste the spices that were supposed to be there.
Our son-in-law had honey and mustard salmon. He ordered his salad with balsamic vinaigrette but was given a salad with Russian dressing. He decided to eat it rather than send it back. From his description of the salmon, I think that he may have had the best dish as he said that the salmon was perfectly cooked and very moist.
The kids ordered off the kids menu, with 2 having chicken fingers and one having a kids burger. They got the vegetable of the day with their meals. All of them were really excited because the kids meals come with ice cream (chocolate, vanilla or strawberry) for dessert.
As other Yelpers mentioned, Chit Chat's shtick is that each table comes with a clear plastic cube that's filled with cards designed to inspire a conversation. For example, like "What is your favorite food and why?" We only checked them out towards the end of the meal...
This diner is popular. While we were leaving, one of Hackensack's Finest pulled into the lot. We watched as he entered something into his computer, then headed to the diner. Since he was in no rush, we figured that he was here for dinner :)
Would we go again? Sure---especially now that we know what to expect when it comes to portion sizes. So, next time we will order accordingly. The food is decent, if not mind-blowing. read more
