Best mechanic shop I have ever encountered!! These people went above and beyond with rebuilding the transmission in my motorhome. Knowing I have reservations in Vermont they worked me into their schedule and even finished ahead of the time promised. They are knowledgeable, friendly and do what they promise at an extremely fair price. Being a woman alone there are always horror stories about being taken advantage of. Having driven my family down from Chicago for a cabin stay in the mountains, a trip to an automotive shop was not on the itinerary. However, an extremely loud rattling on my Jeep forced my hand. Through the recommendation of a taxi company, I contacted Chip's and headed over. As an out of towner at the mercy of their diagnosis, I prayed that they were men of character and morals. Lester checked me in and got the Jeep in right away, and Phil came into the waiting room no more than ten minutes later with assurance that although a trip to the dealer would be needed, the Jeep would safely make the 600 plus mile trip back home. He even knocked off half the price for their work. What I feared could be thousands, ended up being just over $40, and the Jeep did indeed made the drive with absolutely no issue and is parked in my driveway as we speak. I feel this kind of service is rare these days, and that is why I wanted to really convey how impressed and thankful I am to have walked through their door. It would have been easy for lesser men to fleece a tourist in a jam. Making money is obviously the bottom line with business, but clearly Chip's is a shop that genuinely cares about the human element involved as well. I wish every place utilized this model as it is unfortunately becoming a lost art. Quality, Value I have a 2008 Impala I use as a mail delivery vehicle. My grandma had a new transmission put in from Chips in 2019. They warrantied the transmission for 20,000 miles. Then Chips personally warrantied the transmission for 100,000. The vehicle was only driven 28,000 since 2019. We called because the vehicle started leaking fluid and was not able to be driven. We paid to have the vehicle towed to Chips from Newport, TN. Paul stated since my vehicle was used as "commercial" he wasn't honoring any warranty (which was never discussed prior.) We then paid $940 to have the transmission "fixed." We were told that the transmission had a seal leaking and a motor mount giving us a "special discount" of $300. So my previous total would have been $1240. I have driven the vehicle 5 days. ( YES, 5 DAYS!) After being told that the transmission was pulled and checked, everything was perfect. They did a full check of my transmission. Now, I called again because guess what, my transmission will not go into gear and will not move from drive. And now I'm told there is nothing to do except pay to have it towed again. As well as, paying to repair again. I am now being told they didn't actually pull my transmission and just looked at the pan for metal. Don't use this place. Crooks. I paid a transmission shop to fix my vehicle. I didn't pay for a scam, but that's what I got. I wouldn't even give this place one star, but google forced me to. So total paid to Chips? $5940. Yap, that's right. Total scam. There's never a great time to have car troubles but it's especially untimely when you are on a retreat to be refreshed. Chips transmissions made a bad situation seem like no real problem at all. They took our church van in right way, called the car rental for us, diagnosed the problem and kept us informed of the issue and progress, did great work, gave us a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty offering assistance nation wide, and did it all for a very fair price. STAY AWAY! Made appt and dropped off car early on a friday for new clutch. Later that day they called and said needed flywheel too. "Ok, how long to repair" "We ordered it today from a reliable shipper we use..should be here monday. Monday- "should be here tuesday" Tuesday- 'should be here wednesday" Wednesday "should be here thursday" Thursday "should be here friday" It was. Here's my issue..I understand parts delays..I'm a reasonable person. Just call me. Not ONCE did they call me advising of the situation. When I asked what the delay was, all I got was "The guy said it shipped..should be here tomorrow". I asked for a tracking number. "Yeah..uh..I'll get that and call you back". No call. I asked again. "yeah I'll get that and call you right back". No call. When I finally picked up car, I asked why the part delay. "The guy that shipped it found it next to his desk, guess he forgot" Seriously? Driving home car very hard to shift. Clutch slave and master cyl bad! We had to fix that with help from a mechanic (that I paid for) in my garage!! You'd think they'd want the car fixed, paid for, and out of the way quickly. For some unexplicable reason, they kept putting off the repair. Bottom line..they didn't care, what else can I conclude? My husband and I took our Tahoe to Chips to have the transmission checked, the mechanic that checked it out reaked of marijuana and was very rude. We were told that it would cost $2800.00 to $3200.00 to have it rebuilt. We wanted a second opinion and went to another shop. It turned out to be a bad shift solenoid and onlt costed about $250.00 with a transmission service. We will not go back to Chips. read more
