This dinner is housed in an old but well maintained tiny building on Church Ave SW in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. Opened 24 hours, 7 days a week, it is one of the few places where you can go have breakfast, lunch, or dinner, any time during the day. For this review I decided to wake up early in the morning and go visit it while it was still dark outside. You know turning an everyday event like having breakfast into a one of a kind adventure. As I arrived I was impressed to see this old, small, brick building, very well maintained, painted white, and very well lit all around and highlighted with a red neon light all around it on top. There were two men talking in the corner outside and one inside talking to the employee there and who was just about to leave. The decor of the restaurant was that of an old American dinner. After all, it first opened in the 1930's, but very well kept throughout all these years, and extremely well clean. Even the counter and ten red stools had that antique look, but nice and clean. It was like stepping back in time, very surreal, with even a working Coke machine inside. Here they only take cash as payment, but to remind you of the present, it contained an ATM machine inside a corner inside to help you have access to cash. At this time there was only one employee working there, but he was so welcoming and with such a nice personality and positive attitude in life. He started working here 5 years ago, around the time of covid, after having to change jobs, but has loved and enjoyed this job ever since; and it showed. The dinner was full of signs on the walls, including the menus. One of my favorites was a cartoon that said "Texas Tavern HOME of the CHEESY WESTERN." Another said: "Since 1930 we serve only H&C Brand Coffee. They also had for sale some souvenirs of the place, including a book with the title of Texas Tavern Four Generations of Millionaires Club by Shari L. Dragovich. It was $23 and signed by the author. For breakfast, I ordered from the Club Breakfast Menu, 3 Eggs over easy, Bacon, and White Toast with Butter, and a cup of coffee. The eggs were small but had the yellow color of fresh farm eggs and tasted the same, and their white toast was fresh and soft, from Flowers, with butter spread on them that made them taste just wonderful. Sometimes it is the simple things in life that bring the most joy. The cup of coffee with cream and sugar was nice and hot and tasted amazing. I enjoyed talking with Ryan, the employee, while having my breakfast, and am looking forward to return to have their famous Cheesy Western, Hotdog Chile, Hotdog, and Burger. In this little hometown restaurant I had one of the best breakfast dining experiences of my life. Very memorable indeed. I highly recommend this place to all of you reading my review. You will not be disappointed, and it will be an experience you will always cherish and never forget.

So let's start with the food. First off, NOWHERE on the menu does it say that the chicken is a sandwich. I opened the box and there was something wrapped in tin foil and when I opened it, it was a chicken sandwich with some kind of sauce and pickles. I HATE pickles. So GROSS!!! It also looked like the sauce was a mix of bbq and Mayo. Gross!! And let's talk about the size of the chicken.....the bun was one of those small burger buns you get from the store and the chicken was SMALLER than the damn bun!!!! It didn't even stick out!!! Like WTF?????? If I'm gonna pay for food I expect to get food. I sat there for a few minutes just looking at it cause I felt like I had been scammed and finally I go back up to the counter. I asked the guy if this is a normal sized piece of chicken and he tells me it depends which piece you get. What the actual heck???? I also told him that NOWHERE on the menu does it say it's a sandwich and he says "You thought it was a piece of chicken?". Yes, I did think that. He then went and had them make me another piece of chicken (same small size as the first) so that I had a little more. Tho there was BBQ sauce on it, this chicken had zero flavor. I never had a hush puppy before and it was kinda bleh. Fried crap if you ask me. And the onion rings tasted kinda mushy so definitely NOT good. The ONLY good thing was the shake. I got the chocolate Oreo peanut butter flavor and that was definitely worth the extra money. Would happily pay for another shake but 100% feel like I wasted money on the food. Probably not going back even tho they do have other things. I just don't feel like anything else would be worth it. And the portion size is NOT OK!! 100% never going back to this location.

From the outside, the restaurant's building looked clean and inviting. Cars already were driving up to the drive through window and putting in their orders. And a few people were dining inside as well. I noticed that the windows and the glass door were very clean, and this fact gave a nice first impression of the restaurant. Once inside, I noticed the cleanliness of the place and contemporary, comfortable furniture: booths as well as tables and chairs. The color combination of gold and black made the place look elegant yet relaxed. The decor was minimalist with a wide screen color TV and a few signs decorating the walls, and a nice lighting treatment that came down from the black ceiling above. When I arrived to the ordering counter, I noticed all the employees were working very motivated and with a purpose, all doing their assigned duties enthusiastically. A young lady up front greeted and welcomed me with a smile and seemed very happy to hear that this was my first time here. She gave me some time to review the menu that was placed where all fast food restaurants have them. I ordered the Zaxseas Surf & Turf combo, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie for dessert. The order was efficiently taken and I paid with my credit card. It contained 3 Chicken Fingerz, 8 Shrimp with Zaxtail sauce, Texas Toast, Crinkkle fries, and a small drink of Dr. Pepper. Everything in the order came out so fresh and hot. The Chicken Fingerz were crunchy in the outside and juicy and tender in the inside. Same with the Shrimp. The Fries were also very well fried and freshly served. And the sauces were amazingly delicious. As I was leaving, I saw who seemed to be the manager seated at a table interviewing a young lady. I didn't want to interrupt, otherwise I would have told him how well he was running this restaurant. I just had an amazing dining experience here and this was only my first time. I highly recommend this place and am looking forward to coming back soon in the near future.

Yet never in my wildest dream would I have imagined that it was designed by a kid, the nephew of the owner. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Subshack in Salem, Virginia, is the perfect example. After arriving to this Sub Shop located in a small strip mall in the middle of nowhere, in Salem, Virginia, the friendly owner of the place, who has a wonderful personality, gave me a warm welcome and immediately, in a nutshell, told me the story of how this place came to be. Born and raised in New York and having lived for many years in North Carolina, the opportunity of opening up this business here in Salem, Virginia came up and he literally went for it. And aren't we lucky he did because it is an ingenious little Sub Shop, a product of two persons who let their imagination run wild and then worked hard to see their dream of owning a little restaurant come true. And don't be confused by its name, it simply means a small place where large Subs are made for people to savor and enjoy. Thus we have: the "SUBSHACK." This restaurant is mostly for orders To-Go, yet outdoor, in front, it has a picnic table, for customers who would enjoy eating there during the warm Seasons of the year. They bake their own Sub bread in-house daily, and also have daily Specials. Today's Special was: "BUY ANY LARGE SUB GET A FREE DRINK & CHIPS." So I ordered their large Italian Sub. The Sub bread was gigantic and their Deli meats were also quality and huge. On top of this there was a large list of ingredients you could add to the Sub. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review and see for yourselves. Besides Hot and Cold Subs, they also serve Paninis, Desserts, and Milkshakes and Smoothies. I can't wait to return and try their Cuban Panini. In conclusion I definitely recommend this Sub place as a very unique place if you're looking for good food, prepared in a welcoming and friendly environment, by a warm and kindhearted individual.

Before entering this restaurant I reflected on "What is the main mission of a restaurant?" I concluded that It is "To serve great food, in a casual, relaxed environment by friendly and knowledgeable people at a fair price." As I entered the restaurant, I noticed how clean and organized it was and how besides the food, the decor focus was on local firefighters with framed photographs all around the restaurant and a large artwork reflecting on the Hotel Roanoke Fire on July 1st 1898. The menu was displayed in a large sign on the wall behind and on the counter, explaining the steps to go about in ordering your food here, and very well illustrated: Choose your bread. Choose your size. Hot Specialty Subs. Build your own Sub. Salads. Sides. Make it a Combo. Kids' Combos. Extras. Just as I was feeling comfortable with the easy ordering process and with the appetizing selection of Subs, I am warmly greeted by whom seems to be the manager of the restaurant and who takes my order. I ended up ordering the Firehouse Steak & Cheese, with white bread, in the large size; and finshed making it a Combo. I was ringed up and paid with a credit card. Then giving a cup and went to get my soft drink as one of the employees prepared my Sub with my instructions on what I wanted on it. The soft drink machine was modern and very impressive. One could chose a particular brand drink or make it a combination of brands.. The only other restaurant that I had ever seen a soft drink machine as this one was at Moe's Southwest Grill. I ended up making an Iced Cherry Dr. Pepper. When my Sub was ready, I was called to the counter to get my Sub which was placed on a paper over a red tray, and asked to pick up my Chips side from the shelves in front of the counter. The first thing I noticed was how fresh and soft the bread was, the reasonable amount of meat inside, and the quality melted cheese. As I was eating, a friend of my entered the restaurant, made his order. And joined me at my table. He also was very impressed with the quality of his Medium Italian Sub. What an amazing Sub dining experience. Right then and there I looked forward to returning to try out another of the Subs from their menu. I highly recommend this place and can assure you won't be disappointed by doing so. On the contrary, you will probably make this restaurant one of your favorites, just as I did.

And today I finally decided to go to Tanglewood Mall, where we have our Five Guys here in Roanoke, Virginia, and give them a try. I went in with high expectations and I came out in love with the place after they far exceeded my highest of expectations! A family-business born from the answer to a simple question a couple of parents decided to ask their sons: "Do you want to go to college or start a business?" And thriving from the "Yes" answer to the question, onwards. When I arrived at Five Guys today I wasn't aware of their history or background. All I knew through word of mouth was that they made good burgers and fries, and that they were expensive. From the time I walked in the door, I was impressed with the restaurant's cleanliness and simplicity of design with the colors white and red standing out as well as their solid wood tables and chairs. The music being played set the tone to the beginning of the dining experience. There were boxes of peanuts with little paper bowls so you can take some peanuts to your table and munch while your food was being prepared. On the wall there was a sign saying where the potatoes used to make your fries today came from. What also stood out were enlarged quotes from different sources all around the restaurant along with articles pinned to the wall about Five Guys and the reason for its success. When it was my turn to order, a friendly African-American lady, Mashenka, greeted me with a smile and warm welcome. She mentioned the Classic Combo that they had, and I ordered that but upgraded it to a Bacon Cheeseburger, with fries and a drink. And of course, I asked for lots of free toppings. Besides this I also ordered a Bacon Cheese Dog. I had seen a picture of it and was attracted by how they serve it cut in half inside a hot dog bun. While I waited I went to the very innovative drink machine and made myself a Cherry Dr Pepper. Then I went to watch how the cheerful employees cooked and prepared the burgers, dogs, and fries. Later while doing my research I found out that their burger meat is fresh and never frozen and their special burger buns are freshly made daily from their recipe in a local bakery and brought in. After picking up my order, I brought the bag to the table and opened it up. The burger and hot dog were wrapped in aluminum foil to keep them warm. The fries came in a bag of its own that was overloaded and there was a whole lot more fries spilled inside the large bag where everything came in. What a relief that besides the fries being so good, cut fresh in-house daily, I also got more than what I expected. Later I found out in my research that they do this intentionally as part of their Core Business Philosophy. The company believes that providing an overwhelming portion of fries is essential to their success and key to customer satisfaction. The feeling of getting more than what you paid for is intended to win over repeat customers. The burger was so fresh and juicy, cooked to perfection, with lots of fresh toppings on top. The bun was fresh and soft with a special taste to it that reminded me of the buns I used to eat with my hot dog after winning a Little League game. And the all beef hot dogs were also quality dogs. Wow, what an extraordinary dining experience having this All-American meal in a friendly environment. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning many times. Some say it's pricey, I say it's priceless!
