This is hands down my favourite Chinese restaurant in Melbourne. They used to have a store at Knox as well but after many many years they are now only trading in Chinatown. I've never had the need to go all the way in there but I had a craving for Chinese food and no other store seems to be able to cook the food as well as these guys. Absolutely revolting. Hands down the worst food and dining experience I've ever had in my life. If I gave one star reviews, this would be it. Granted we came on a Sunday for Yum Cha at 1:00pm. But even with reservations, from the get-go, it was a disaster. Firstly from start to finish there was about 35 people fighting to get seated at the door just creating this monstrous noise and fast food environment. It spilled into the restaurant and out onto the street. People eyeing tables like hawks. A lot of pushing, shoving, fighting over tables. Then, service wise, you are treated like complete shit. Nobody answers you, nobody responds to requests. We had a whole fish dish thrown over my partners jacket, then some shouting in Chinese, then she put the piece back onto the plate on the trolley, and took it around to other tables. Staff talk "AT" you, not with you, and we had even more rude situations that I can't be bothered to get into. Thirdly and mostly importantly, the food, is absolutely gross. Nothing is real. It's just all uncooked, cheap bits of chicken skin and pork rind and duck cartilage grounded up into a paste and smothered in cheap sauce. Even the chinese broccoli smelled like sewer water and was inedible. The pork in the rice was raw and still had bits of bones. You can even see them wheeling the meats up and down the smelly alley/street and into the kitchen. Just barf worthy. I ate 2.5 dumplings and ended up throwing up in the bathroom and then getting the check shortly after because nothing would stay down. Take a trip to the bathroom upstairs, look at the kitchen and you'll see why. Take two minutes to just observe one server going about their business, and you'll see jaw dropping stuff. Everything is handled by hand, food all over the place, things sitting out in the open, dishes splashing into each other. This place needs to be investigated for food and health standards. It is absolutely revolting. Do not buy the white table cloth/superficial decor in the pictures. This is a total tourist scam. You cannot get worse food and service than this. I guess I'm the only reviewer so far who doesn't hate this place; in fact, I like it a lot. I only go here for weekend yum cha, usually on a Sunday afternoon. They have a good selection and the food comes out super hot and with plenty of carts. On the downside, it is quite cramped and often packed. A few times, we've been seated upstairs with just a couple other tables and the service then was MUCH slower and farther in-between than the busy downstairs. But overall, great standard yum cha in a pleasant setting. It's a solid CBD yum cha option that I would recommend. read more

I'm a bit surprised to see the low overall review after my amazing experience last night. We decided to walk dowm this street and see what would catch our eye. This was one of a couple. The restaurant is nice and clean. The staff was mediocre but that's been my experience throughout Melbourne during my visit. We had the Dim Sum and it was DELICIOUS! So much flavor and no need for any sauce. The calamari was a tad bit salty but still really good. The Mapo Tofu and chicken dish we had were perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant and they have a large menu with lots of options. read more

The quality of service at this Chinatown "Dragon Boat" restaurant seems to fluctuate a lot. I have been to this restaurant only twice: the first time, in February 2012, and then again last night: April 2013. Whether they have improved a lot since I was there a year ago, or whether this restaurant is just generally a hit-and-miss, is yet to be proven. My comments a year ago were: "The service here sucks. And their menu is limited. You're much better off trying Westlake just two doors up the road." Last night? I was blown away with how excellent the service and food were. ~ Food: Salt and pepper squid/calamari from the "chef's specials" menu is one of the best I have ever had -- and I have had *a lot* of salt and pepper calamari. Also ordered the spicy chilli quail: sadly a little bit on the undercooked side, but certainly succulent and well seasoned. I still prefer the quail at the Chinese restaurant a few doors down, "Westlake." ~ Service: Surprisingly outstanding. Our waiter was polite, accurate & drinks came out immediately. ~ It was ridiculously cold in the restaurant. It was 12°C outside, and it felt about 10°C inside. All the patrons were wearing their jackets. Absolutely perplexed why this is the case, but their air conditioners were clearly on. Overall I am suspicious of this establishment and my inconsistent experiences make me question whether I would take guests here or recommend this restaurant. I'm going to have to go back sometime in the future to confirm my findings. 3013/04/05 update - one week later: So I've gone back a week later on a Friday night to get to the bottom of what I think of this establishment. The young woman serving us was pretty rude, and one of our mains came out different to what we ordered. We clarified with her whether that was the [dish that we ordered] and she claimed it was (even though we had ordered a fried dish and this was definitely not fried). We got the manager to come over and he said it is definitely not the right dish, took it back, and ~40 minutes later~ we finally got the correct dish. What does this mean? It means: ~ They can't get an order right. ~ When they get an order wrong, they will lie about it. Not impressed. read more

Dragon Boat is something of a Melbourne Yum Cha institution, and one I can remember having dropped in on once every few years since I was about 5 years old. There are also a few other Dragon Boat's around town, but I have the feeling their numbers have dwindled some what. Nonetheless... I don't hate this place, but I didn't love it either. I thoroughly neutraled it. It has been a while since I'd been to Yum Cha so I was pretty excited, and realistically I don't think I could have BEEN totally disappointed. However, there were definitely a few things lacking. The carts that did come around seemed to have the same dishes over and over. You could order other dishes but make sure you catch one of the floating waiters who are actually able to go to the kitchen, because if you ask one of the cart waiters, they will just nod, say it's coming, and then nothing will ever happen as they just keep pushing their cart around in little circles. The Char Siu Bao were evidently home made but rather shoddy and rushed, and the flavour was a bit off what you would expect, but still fluffy and tasty. Too few options without prawns. However, the most disappointing thing was that the hallowed dessert cart never eventuated. Well after we had finished with dumplings we sat, waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and the dessert cart never came around, so eventually we gave up and decided to just go somewhere else to buy our egg tarts, as there are certainly plenty of bakeries and dumpling outlets around Chinatown and the CBD that aren't dim sum style. When we went to pay, we saw the dessert cart shoved unattended in a corner behind a bunch of other carts. Also, on the way out, I saw several tables with classic yum cha dishes that had never come around to our corner of the dining room. The food wasn't mind blowing but was nonetheless satisfying enough for a general dumpling experience, however the disappointing aspect came from the lack of variety making it's way around the room. If you have been eating yum cha all your life you will always have a few favourites to look forward to, so it's kind of a let down when those don't eventuate. read more

My fiancé and I were here from the United States and was really hungry. It was around 2pm when we got here. We noticed there were 3 tables seated with 5 servers on the floor. Took forever to get some tea and service. I understand we got there around 2pm so dim sum is limited. We were only serve 1 cart of dim sum and no one came back to check on us. Horrible service. We were still starving. So we didn't want to wait for anymore dim sum choices so we got the bill. Getting the bill took forever, probably took 20 minutes since no one was around and 5 servers were clutter around the cashier. We tried to make eye contact but that didn't work. My fiance just got up and decided to pay up front. This is a tourist trap and we realized we fell into this place because it look so nice and pretty because it's for tourists! Over price dim sum there you go! I don't think I will come back here since I'm not from here anyways. Going forward, only go to Asian places with Asians that's how you know the food is good! read more

That cold cold morning I was looking for something to eat in the early morning. Nothing was open except for this restaurant. No choice, try it out. Yum cha. We ordered - Chicken feet, Siew Mai, Dim sim, scallop dumplings, prawn chee chiong fun. Steam corn prawn, century egg and meat congee, spring roll, Now there's a lot of choices, but hey every round they are doing the same dishes! and the waitress can never reach the tables at the back because they were working so slow then. The spring rolls were pure meat. Doh, no signs of veg? Tea wasn't refilled. And the congee we ordered was conveniently forgotten. Last point- Expensive place. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

A lot of Australia's chinese shops have been westernised, but Chinatown is Melbourne's destination for a decent Asian meal. Some of the shops are small and dodgy, but there are also some more expensive swishy restaurants. The trouble is finding the right one to suit your tastes and budget. I've been to a couple of Chinese restaurants but I'm still unsure which is best. My choice is at the top end of Chinatown, just off on Russell St. It's a great little cafe similar to London's Wong Kei - fast, cheap and cheerless but it tastes good! read more

I quite liked Melbourne's chinatown..even though it did seem fairly small & looking a bit run down. Spots have pockets of street art to discover around this area - which is great if you like to check this sort of stuff out. Seemed to be a wide selection of asian restaurants to choose from to suit all budgets, including a few food courts which weren't too bad! Some of the chinese shops had all sorts of weird & wonderful things on offer - like Placenta cream - EEK! Well located, very central in the city & good for a wander through when out n about in the city. read more

I was hungry yesterday so I went to go after shopping and than stopped in this fine dine chinese place I saw online. Thinking ok it should be nice and as soon as I was waiting for someone to show me to my table . People start lining up and when someone did come up to get people seated. The FIRST Thing the guy did was came up to ask the couple next to me first. That was first dissatisfied things to do with customers EVER. So they pointed to me thank goodness. I said table for one and the look was like (oh really). Showed me up stairs I walked up and than the girl showed me to a corner table.. (Second thing to piss me off). The food was great just one person didn't pay attention and gave the two tables next to me with couples and walked off. Really? Am i invisible! So I went to pay thinking it was down stairs (since i thought they only had one till.) Walked up to the first step and this Chinese man was yelling st me pointing to the small sign" PLEASE PAY HERE" on the till (size of half a A5 paper.) That was the last straw. NEVER ever going here again. Everyone just steered at me . If it was Perth I wouldn't be as polite as i was here after that rudely outburst! read more

Open from 8am is nice thing to know. Dim sum served by wagons but they don't come so often. So waiting time is bit long but good for Sunday brunch. Unfortunately my friend is allergy to prawns, and they have prawns in most of items. I understand people love prawns, so that was fine, but very disappointed that non of the service staffs cared about it, and irresponsibly told us 'this one has only pork' and actually had prawns inside - happened three times. Moreover, there was only one person in black suits, a lady, and we asked her any other menu available. She snapped 'most of things have prawns, this time serve by wagons only'. The service was absolutely appalling. We asked a waiter if we could go for a cigarette and not to clear the table politely he nodded so we assumed he understood, as we were proceeding to go for a cigarette another man then stopped us and demanded we pay the bill we then explained to him we spoke to the other gentlemen and told him we were going for a cigarette and would be back to continue our meal he then asked us to leave our card so we told him we would pay the bill and not come back. He then apologised and told us to proceed for our cigarette as we get outside of the restaraunt to have our cigarette a woman come running out thinking that we were going to leave without paying after I explained to her that never have I had such terrible service in my life and what happened she then apologised but it was too late at that point. The food was ok but the service was horrible that we would never go back there. We went inside, didn't even want to finish the meal payed the bill and will never return there again. In my opinion the food isn't worth it if the service is going to be that bad! Never have I felt so horrible in my life and never had an experience like that at any resteraunt. McDonalds staff have more manners than they do! read more
