We went today (Sunday lunch) because we wanted to pick up a few things at Walmart. Understand where I (we) are coming from. My wife spent her childhood in Hawaii, and her father is Japanese. I am an Army veteran, and have been to plenty of Asian restaurants around the world. I do have a tough standard. I am sincerely not trying to punch down. I want this place to be good, it would be better for my retirement years for it to be good. It is the closest option for buffet. Our Staunton option is a menu only, and it is also not a good option, at all. I understand that a place needs to cater to its patrons to be profitable. I am not saying they don't try, I'm not saying they don't care. I do understand that americanized and (bland) is what they need to lean into. Our lunch today was $40 and we both left unsatisfied. I am willing to eat anything and have the girth to prove it. My wife is a bit more particular, but certainly has the ability to provide a decent value judgement on the things she chooses. There just are not consistently good choices to be had here. The "sushi" for example is marginal at best. There are more breaded/fried items than truly exist in Asian menus at other places I have been. The other items almost always have a sauce that is salt and sugar forward. There are very few spices/textures that I would expect from a Chinese menu. It is relatively clean, the people working here do try to do a good job. I appreciate the effort required to put all this together for us. It has the standard Chinese restaurant decorations (I think there is a kit that can be ordered from somewhere), but they haven't overdone it. I do understand and accept that people like this place, and appreciate the offerings. I am in no way looking down on their preference, [To each their Own] and please continue to enjoy it. If you are however, just passing through, it may not be the best stop for good Chinese food, okay "food" sure, but not on par with other options I have enjoyed.

A bit run down, and a little bit cliche in terms of the decorating. With some light maintenance and a bit of editing on the decor, it could be a charming little spot, in a small Midwestern town. I am trying to be kind, becuase I have been fortunate enough to have travelled the world, and have gone to many different levels of restuarants. I like "simple" americanized Chinese food sometimes, it is something I actually look for when I got o different towns. The good; hot & sour soup was very nice, just tangy enough from the vinegar and just spicy enough from pepper (didn't detect any hot sauce flavors) to be good. There were mushrooms, bamboo, and a bit of tofu. I missed the drizzled egg that I have had in others versions. The could have been better; the Hunan pork was very one note, salt, was tender and good portion in the dish, but that just salt flavoring made it a bit hard to enjoy. The sauce was okay, and the vegetables were well prepared and balanced. The egg roll was an egg roll, if not mass produced, it just wasn't made with real attention, it was a bit hollow. The bad: fried rice, the texture was just plain wrong from anything I have had over many years and came to believe was correctly made. There were no "chunks" of anything, just vaguely browned rice (soy sauce perhaps). I will come back, I will try other things. I will order from the high end of the menu and see if perhaps they simply , for complex reasons I'm sure, decided to mail it in on the weekday lunch combos (places do that). I want Bamboo Garden to be better. I want it to be a reliable place for me to get good "strip mall Chinese."

If you say yes, you'll get a small cup of the red sauce like when you order Sweet & Sour Pork or Chicken. They don't give you those small packets like other restaurants. My usual go to entrees are always Beef and Broccoli or General Tso's Chicken. Both of them are very good. I do the B&B when I'm trying to eat healthy Chinese. The beef is tender and the broccoli is soft, but still has a little snap to it. When enjoying the Beef and Broccoli, I have white rice. The General Tso's Chicken has a lite crispy coating and the sauce blends perfectly with fried rice, instead of white rice. Service is over the top friendly.
