*Disclaimer: This review is only for The Bar downstairs, not the restaurant itself. (Though I can tell, the food there does look legit). Having been to most of the high-end hotel and bougie bars in London, my taste in bars has skyrocketed to an unhealthy extent. And, this bar still ticks off most of my boxes. The cocktails are some of the best you'll find this side of the Thames, which - considering the part of town you're in - is saying a lot. The seasonal menus never disappoint, and the ingredients and alcohol used are always top-notch. So, obviously, expect a higher price tag. Unfortunately, the menu since I was last here has changed, so there's no point telling you which ones I've tried; however, I can also vouch for their classics. Trust me, you won't run short of options here, so just tell the highly-qualified bartender what you like, and they'll hook you up. Bar snacks are also available, and they go hand-in-hand with the restaurant's offerings, which remain true to the Cantonese cuisine. The staff can be a bit cold/ socially awkward, but I wouldn't take that too personally. It is Mayfair, after all. read more

Every time I'm in London I come here for the peking duck. there were 4 of us and we easily ate 2 ducks. The best duck in London hands down! They serve it in 2 courses and it never disappoints. We also had corn soup, lobster dumplings, scallop dumplings amongst other things. Will be back for sure. read more

Food was awesome, service was spectacular with lots of attention to detail. Ambiance was fun and romantic. We started off with a bunch of dim sun. It was very delicious and everyone at the table loved it. We then had over 10 different dishes with our large party. All of it was amazing. The peppered beef was very tender, my kids ate and inhaled all the noodles. The orange chicken was perfect and was the first thing to go. My father-in-law loved the cashew chicken. We tried this restaurant in Harrod's mall . It was a domain also. We have to fall I. Line to get in . It's a decent space and has a bar. The dishes we ordered were pricey and came in a small servings. Fried Rice King Prawn was ok. The prawn were cooked perfectly. At first they mistakenly brought fried rice with egg until I told them wrong dish. The wonton soup cost $20 lbs but the serving was a small bowl with 3 wonton . The Singapore vermicelli was bland and spicy . No veggies added. So with my experience, it is a regular Chinese restaurant with pricey cost, small serving and not so good service. read more

I have dined at China Tang several times over the last decade on visits to London. This was my first post COVID and although having to adjust my expectations somewhat feel that there is work to do to get this restaurant back on track. We had a glass of champagne which was not poured at the table, seemed a little light on the bubbles and a flute three quarters full at the princely sum of twenty five pounds. A polite word with the manager led to them doubling down saying, "this is how we always do this". OK.... The food was not up to par - the chicken squab was tasteless, the prawns though were decent. I feel that whilst a challenging time for the hospitality industry it is likely better to offer a reduced menu at the highest standards than allow things to slide and hide behind the pandemic. This place does not bring you back to the Tang dynasty, but it does bring you back in time to the early 20th century. The venue is an enthralling Chinese and art deco fusion by David Tang and is located inside The Dorchester. The stairs down to the restaurant almost give it a seductive speakeasy vibe, and the beautiful cocktail bar and Chinese artwork only add to that vibe. The restaurant is open starting from lunch, and the food is authentic Cantonese cuisine. Dim sum and other dishes are served all day from opening to closing. I had dim sum here for lunch and tried the har kau, siu mai, and congee. All were extremely tasty, though the portion sizes are on the smaller size. China Tang is authentic food in a fine dining setting, and the prices reflect the food quality and ambiance. This is not a casual dim sum cafe where people read a newspaper while enjoying their food, and dim sum carts are not pushed around here. Legit. That's all you need to know. I've had dim sum in many countries around the world, including China (of course) and this place is the real deal. A few weeks ago in New York (Hells Kitchen) I had what I thought at the time was the best dim sum outside of Shanghai or Hong Kong. But I was wrong. This is better. I had the Pork Buns, Scallops and Shumai. I ended up ordering ANOTHER dose of those pork buns because HOLY $H!T they were so good. The prices are a little steep - especially the cocktails - but they're strong and after a couple you won't care about the bill. I would have enjoyed this more in a group, as there were mostly groups at the other tables, but hey - when you travel alone at least you get to pick the restaurant without arguments! read more

@china tang, they charge 22 pounds for lobster dumplings that aren't even full lobster (think fish cakes), and for that price you should get only the real thing. Overall, the food was pretty average compared to any dim sum place, but costs 2-3 times as much as it should for the flavor. Try this other restaurant Bo Lang...way better. read more

This is our go-to restaurant for family outings. My children adore the food and the atmosphere. It's quite soothing, and the food is delicious. My 6-year-old is a foodie, and he has enjoyed every item and rated them 5*, while my 2-year-old appreciates the tranquil setting. Thank you for the wonderful service China Tang. China Tang is the only Chinese restaurant in London that comes close to the Chinese restaurants back home, in LA, OC, and San Diego. The two-course Peking duck dish was well done. The chilli prawns was ordinary but the braised pork belly with fermented vegetables made up for it twice over. The pork belly dish was well seasoned, smoky with intense flavour and aroma. The noodle dish was just ok but the fried rice was a good companion to the salty dishes. Other things of note: The wine list is extensive. The bar area is great. The decor is interestingly sparkly. It is dressy and pricey but if you want Chinese food at the Dorchester, you know what you're getting into. I imagine they do dim sum pretty well here. read more

Some of the best Chinese food in London. Great location, at the back of the Dorchester Hotel, and the restaurant bar is a good place to start the evening. Sure, you'll pay a lot for the food and drink here, but it's worth it. The duck and the beef were the two highlights, and a good selection of wine. Truly unimpressed by China Tang. We were considering having a work party at China Tang so we went for a tasting and man am I glad we had a test run before booking the event here. The food was at best mediocre. Certainly nothing stands out in my mind (except for the truly disappointing and deeply upsetting pork buns) and absolutely nothing came close to knocking my socks off. It felt like Chinese food that you could get anywhere and was certainly not quality, unique Chinese food to match the exorbitant prices. The wine list was also shockingly expensive. Of course I understand this restaurant is in the Dorchester and most clientele are probably less price sensitive, but with the cheapest bottle costing around 60 pounds, I was disgruntled needless to say. I'd also note the service was abysmal. You would think that given we were considering booking a large event at this venue we might receive an exceptional level of service (if only to secure the booking), but we were ignored all night and struggled to flag anyone's attention. First off let me just say that the food deserves 4 stars, but there is a reason that I'm giving this just 3 stars. The service isn't very good at all. I expected so much more from the Dorchester. At an upscale restaurant you normally get service as if you were their only customer. The staff is attentive and affectionate. Always at your beck and call. Well at China Tang they treated us as if we weren't there, as if we weren't special, and as if we were invisible. In fact the only time they really paid attention to us was when they brought us our food. We had to ask to have our wine and water poured instead of them always making sure that our glass was full, and even to order we had to hunt a waiter down. Ridiculous! But like I said before, the food was delicious! So I can't complain about that. I would recommend only for the quality of the food, but as for the service, I won't be back. read more

Amazing customer service, beautifully displayed delicious food with fresh ingredients. We ate series of different foods (can't recall all the names) but my favourite were definitely small dumplings and the roasted/caramelised duck -- absolutely yummy. The Art Deco decor is amazing at this restaurant and you must check out the gorgeous restrooms. The bar is also drop-dead gorgeous! Now about the food...I ordered the set lunch menu which was £30 for a glass of white or red wine, a basket of assorted dim sum (Har Kau, Siu Mai, Chiu Chow Dumplings, and vegetable dumpling), vegetable spring roll, tomato and egg drop soup, Hong Kong classic meat and seafood noodles, and seasonal greens (Bok Choi) with oyster sauce. I was really impressed with the Hong Kong noodles that where loaded of perfectly prepared scallops, shrimp, and lobster. (I am craving some at this moment!) I wasn't overly impressed with the dim sum nor the service. I specifically asked for no green onions, which the waitress repeated back, yet I received the soup with green onions. When the waiter finally acknowledged me, it took about twenty minutes to get a cup of soup and the restaurant was not busy. For being located in the Dorchester Hotel and for the price, I was expecting amazing, attentive service. There was a sufficient wait staff but they mainly stood around the room. I should not have to sit at the table with empty dishes and wait for the next course (especially for the fixed-priced lunch.) GRIM. From the moment we walked in to the time we left, I cannot describe quite how disappointed we were. First impressions: not the fun crowd we had expected. The seats were far too close together and very uncomfortable. My wife needed two additional cushions other guests just sat perched, unable to lean back! Oh, and no nibbles were served with our drinks. The food was undeniably good. But not exceptional. The most shocking part of our experience was that we asked for Peking duck to start with, an interim course of steamed fish and some rice, followed by peppered beef, a second duck dish, with a couple of vegetable dishes (asparagus, bean curd). After the Peking duck, sure enough they brought the steamed fish. But they brought the beef too. Not wanting to make a scene at that stage, we simply asked the waiter to leave some time before bringing the remainder of the dishes. They still proceeded to bring ALL the other food too. So we spoke to the supervisor who was passing by. I still cannot believe that she offered either to put lids on some of the dishes while we ate the fish or to take the food away and keep it warm for us! We asked to speak with the manager and insisted the dishes were removed and freshly prepared food served to us later. I would expect the average local Chinese restaurant not to serve two diners six carefully prepared (and expensive) dishes simultaneously (on a small table in an air-conditioned room), without checking that this was indeed how they wished the food to arrive. When customers have clearly requested otherwise, this is unforgivable. And when the error is pointed out, the solution should be swift and appropriate. We left feeling completely ripped-off. I have eaten and entertained at Hakkasan countless times and have always left satisfied. If you're looking for somewhere more intimate, try Hunan. read more

China Tang was a disappointing experience. I have been to the Dorchester before and have been very impressed by their level of service. That is why the lunch i had here, at the Chinese restaurant at Dorchester, was a let-down. We opted for the set lunch. On the face of it, the offer was very attractive. Two dim-sum baskets, one plate of rice noodles (chicken, pork or vegetables) and a drink (wine, jasmine tea or tsing tao, a chinese beer) for only £15. The dim-sums were good ... and we got a good variety since it was a mixed basket. Then we got the noodles. On asking for the second basket of dim-sums they gave us the most outrageous of excuses. They said that its mentioned as two baskets because the menu was for a minimum of 2 people. It wasn't mentioned anywhere that the set-lunch was for at-least 2 people. Even if it were, the menu is supposed to be per-person right ? Especially since the other courses and the prices are like that. Such an obvious deceit was not expected at the Dorchester. The pork noodles that i got was very good, with a lot of gravy. The chicken that my friend got was crispy, but equally good. But the portions were small ... much like starter portions. Combined with two baskets of dim-sums, it would have been a proper, filling meal. But sadly that was not what we got. The good food and the stunning decor makes me want to come back again. China Tang is located in the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair, London. We reside in Toronto, Ontario, in Canada and we have been eating at China Tang for the past three years when we are visiting London. In the past the food and service were both great. Today, however, we noticed a considerable change in the food. We ordered our usual items; Shrimp Dumplings and Spring Rolls for appetizers, Crispy Chicken, Sichuan Prawns, Beef with Pepper, and Crispy noodles with vegetables for our main dishes. With the exception of the appetizers, and our bottle of Domaine Wachau our food was terrible. The presentation was unappetizing, all of our food arrived at the same time, and the quality and flavour were poor. To make matters worse I still have an upset stomach several hours later. I absolutely loved my experience at China Tangs this week! Everything from atmosphere, food, drive, and presentation was spot on. I enjoyed a luncheon dim sum with my two children, ages 9 and 7, along with drinks and one of the best dairy free desserts I've ever had in my life. This restaurant may be in a hotel and the food more expensive than your average Chinatown haunt but the atmosphere and the service alone is worth the added premium. I do think it's important to order right from the menu - some are a hit (having lived in HK for 2.5 years - I can say I have developed a somewhat discerning tongue for elevated southern Chinese cuisine) while others may be more of a miss. Dim sum - loved the scallop dumpling and the chiu chow dumpling (that crunchy goodness I can eat forever) for mains we shared a two course Peking duck between two people - very satisfying (speaking for everyone when you had to share a duck among too many people and only got a snack when you wanted the whole meal) and then additional sides of Chinese cabbage in chili vinegar (must - very authentic if you like that spicy sour taste) salted fish fried rice and the fried bean curd - latter two were disappointing. For the dessert we had the sago pudding which I would have preferred the fruit accents to be all mango rather than melon., mango and pomegranate - not all of those flavors need to be in there with the coconut sago. The setting and ambiance were very nice, though not spectacular. The service was nothing to rave about. The Stir-Fried Beef in Black Pepper was prepared to a T. The Snow Pea Shoots and Albacore Fried Rice were also scrumptious. Please don't hate me for this - but I really like China Tang. Yes, it's a shameless spot for celebrity-hunting and ludicrously expensive, and yes, it's just Chinese food, but people throw their money at Hakkasan too (which isn't THAT creative, despite its Michelin star). The problem is that China Tang is "classic Cantonese", so really it's the food you and I think we know as Chinese takeaway. But the setting... gorgeously ostentatious and shockingly not pretentious. There's no glam factor or clubby music - it's just people enjoying dinner. And it's a lot, lot better than your average Chinese takeaway... just as an example, the stir-fried beef with peppers, the pork belly and the simple chicken in lemon sauce were all phenomenal. Obviously, this is not a place that most people can afford to make their "regular", but it's worthy of a special occasion if you go with an open mind (and make time for a drink in the adjacent bar downstairs - much better than the Dorchester's main bar). read more

We go often to this beautifully decorated restaurant in the basement of the Dorchester. It's like stepping back in time to an extraordinarily elegant period of China's history. More importantly the food is the best Chinese food in London, the Peking duck is perfect! The service is extremely professional . It's always a great place for office Christmas parties which we have done many times and I've even had a birthday party in the private room. We are fans, but only because it's a fabulous place to treat yourself! read more

The service was excellent, and the staff was very friendly. The food was nothing to write home about though. I started out with the Double mushroom soup which was good, but not excellent. The pepper beef, which was recommended to me, was cooked perfectly but the flavor was bland except for the overwhelming taste of pepper (i like pepper but i also wanted to taste the beef). The warm chocolate pudding dessert was good but it was just a a gooey chocolate lava cake , and i've made this at home before and it's just as good. Lastly the Mohito tasted a bit like a sugary Robitussen. If you want to go to a place that has incredible service, and overpriced food and drink, this is the place.
