Beef with broccoli
Joelle C.

We decided to try a new to us place for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Masks are required to be worn at all times (both guests and staff) and social distancing is enforced as best as they can with what limited space they have. They are operating as takeout only at this time to ensure the safety of their customers and themselves. China is located in the shopping center where Johnny B's is located on Stratford Road and was crazy busy which to me is always a good sign. We ordered crab rangoon, steamed dumplings, the beef with broccoli combo with white rice (also comes with an egg roll) and the chicken with mixed vegetables combo with white rice (and the egg roll). The crab rangoon was probably the best dish out of everything we ordered and some of the best we've had here in Winston Salem. The steamed dumplings were okay and would probably be better if they were eaten as soon as we picked them up and not after a 10 minute drive. Both entrees were good, however my husband prefers the beef with broccoli at our normal Chinese takeout place. The egg rolls were basic and glad they were part of the entree as it wouldn't be something we would order separately. All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would definitely get the crab rangoon here again while maybe trying some other entrees. I'm looking at you General Tso chicken.

Consistently delicious, reasonably priced, fresh and fast friendly service. My go to for Chinese!

General Tso's Chicken combo with lo mein

Hands down our favorite takeout Chinese in Winston because it reminds us of the Chinese from home (NY). We usually get the combo platers, chicken & broccoli with white rice and general tso with fried rice or lo mein. Love that the general tso also has some onion in it! Their boneless spare ribs are amazing, crispy and flavorful! I love the flavor of their soup, but I do wish that their noodle of the dumpling was a little thicker, it's super thin and tends to fall apart. Egg rolls are always a must as well. Some other dishes we've had from here that we love are the pork or chicken moo shu pork and scallion chicken. Inside is your typical take out Chinese restaurant feel, service is always quick and friendly!

China is my favorite place in W-S for Americanized Chinese food. Particularly, their scallion chicken is amazing (other options are still good, but nothing to write home about in my opinion). The sauce has a great flavor, the chicken is in small pieces to have a good ratio of chicken to sauce, and the breading is not too thick and is not soggy. My main complaint is that the dish is inconsistently spicy when asked for extra spicy

I recently moved to the area and asked for Chinese food recommendations. This place was mentioned as a place to avoid. We gave it a shot on the day we moved simply because we wanted Chinese food and didn't feel like cooking. We understood why we didn't hear positive reviews. For us we felt like the food wasn't really good. The rice was bland, the wonton soup was not appealing, and the crab Rangoon was just okay. The barbecue spare ribs were fine overall but certainly looked better than they tasted. If you're looking for Chinese food to get you by, this is the place. If you want good Chinese food, look elsewhere.

Stopped in today for lunch and placed a carry out order at the counter. They actually prefer you call ahead during Covid. Food was ready in a matter of minutes. I had the lunch sesame chicken with broccoli and pork fried rice. Extremely delicious! The chicken was very flavorful!! I highly recommend this dish. The price was unbeatable. Give China Restaurant a shot if you are in the area. It doesn't disappoint.

Spare ribs

You cannot beat their lunch specials. Best boneless spare ribs possible and it comes with pork fried rice instead of just plain.

Quick & Cheap that is what sums up China Restaurant. I have been eating here since they first opened, and have ordered via phone, and in person. Typically it takes about 10 minutes or so for your order. I will go in, order, and head next door to the grocery store to pick up drinks or other items, by the time I am back, it is ready. I have ordered an assortment of items from them. My favorite item, no matter what Chinese restaurant is boneless spare ribs. I will typically order them off the appetizer menu from China, as I am not a huge fan of their rice. It is typically dry, and requires WAY too much soy sauce then I think I should put on it. Which to me is really odd, if you order just the Fried Rice by itself, it is a different type of rice entirely, and is VERY good. We like to order the house fried rice, as it has EVERYTHING in it. The Lo Mein is also very good, and again I like to order the house lo mein as it has everything in it as well. I am ultra picky about my egg rolls. Most times I call them cabbage rolls, as that is all they have in them. China egg rolls are very good, and a far from a cabbage roll. The other favorite for my kids is the Sweet and Sour chicken. I typically get the large order, not the meal. They never fit inside the box, and are always busting out. Which makes it VERY hard driving home...they are so hot...and so, so, so good. I am going to burn myself everytime...I don't care! The sauce it comes with is one of the better sweet and sour sauces I have had. The crab rangoon should be cream cheese with scallions as I have a very hard time finding the crab. Which for me is fine as I am not a fan of crab. The dip is the same as the sweet and sour. Lunch time, china is a must, they have a $5.55 menu, which is basically a meat, and pork fried rice, and an ice tea. If you want soda it is .75 more. I typically upcharge it as the tea is not that good. Come early, and plan to eat elsewhere at lunch as it is a busy shop! You get a lot for $5.55. I would call ahead, so the only wait is to pay!

Got the sweet & sour chicken & crabmeat Rangoon. WAY too expensive, horrible too. Chicken=dry/cream cheese mixture tastes weird-disappointed

I sent my order along with cash w/ a friend to pick up some dinner. I ordered teriyaki chicken but my friend said they said they didn't have that (? What Chinese restaurant doesnt..!?!?). When she ordered the other meal I had mentioned as a backup, the lady pushed the sweet & sour chicken. Said it was their most popular meal, she should get that instead. So my friend finally agreed (I wasn't happy with her). Well it was horrible. First of all I know why she pushed it so hard, it was ridiculously expensive! Just for those 2 things I ordered I paid $13! I was looking at the plates that were $4.95 not $9! And it wasn't even edible so the money was just basically thrown in the trash. I'm upset, considering taking it back and trying for a refund or another dish, I sure hope they accommodate! So to sum this up I got the sweet & sour chicken and the crabmeat Rangoon. The chicken was dry & the cream cheese mixture tasted weird. This was my first time eating there & if they don't refund or give me another meal, it will have been my last.

The usual greasy, almost bland take out chinese that you either love or hate. Or are willing to pay next to nothing for a big portion of.

All the items chosen were good, with the Fried Shrimp and the Mongolian Beef proving to be very, very good! Mongolian Beef is a favorite Chinese American dish. Despite the name, it was developed in Taiwan before coming to the USA, an been very popular, especially as a take out item. The version served here is among the best, nearly as good as the best in the area, that served at Jade Garden in Advance. The dish here adheres to the straight forward simplicity of processing quality beef, onions, and peppers well seasoned with a soy based sauce. The fried shrimp are small, fresh tasting, and well breaded and well seasoned. This isn't an item often thought of when considering Chinese American appetizer, but I would suggest you consider it , especially when a bit of hot mustard or Chinese hot sauce is added. I have tried at least a dozen items here, and there have only been a couple I would not reorder. The sipped with which your order is prepared is a definite plus, usually you are out in under 15 minutes.

I usually get the combo plates that include an entree, egg roll and rice. Today, I have been battling a cold and cough and some wonton soup sounded perfect to sooth my throat. The rest of my family ordered some different dishes for themselves. We ordered online and I sent my son to pick everything up which only took 20 min. The wonton soup had so many wontons in it I split it into three servings. They also give you the fried wonton strips to sprinkle on top if you like that. The portions on all the other food were also big. Mr. Lus doesn't skimp there. We all had plenty for lunch the next day. The service is always fast, reliable and friendly. There is no dining room. It's all take out at Mr Lus so be prepared for that. Otherwise it's your basic order at the counter place.

We wanted sushi and red curry and they delivered us some excellent eats. Service was awesome and the manager still always comes by to ask if everything is ok. Love that. Probably at some point will need a Reno as they have been open awhile but nothing looked bad nice busy atmosphere and lots of customers which is nice to see. We ordered a standard vodka soda from the drink menu. They have drink specials every day as well. Then we tried the sweet heat roll which was so pretty ! Delicious with all the sushi elements. Yum. Then we tried the poke bowl with ahi tuna. Wow so big! Rice, seaweed salad and lots of Veggies and a yummy soy wasabi vinaigrette. The tuna sashimi was so fresh. Then the red curry with chicken. We asked for extra Thai spicy and it was just the perfect heat. Served with white rice this was a huge portion honestly could have served 3 people. We still had a lot left over . They were also great about giving us another bowl of rice which is also a nice touch . The sauce here for this red curry is amazing. I will be back to buy it as we asked if they sell it and our server said yes . It is one of the best I've ever had. We were somewhat totally full !! Haha! Such a fun night here eating all this amazing Great food . I need to make sure I come back sooner than a few years! If your red curry fan definitely come here!

Our soups and appetizer were the absolute best thing we ate. Our entrees were okay. My husband got the beef bulgogi and it needed something. He thought the addition of chili sauce would make it ideal. He gave it a 6 out of 10. I ordered the hibachi beef bowl and it was lacking flavor. The beef was well cooked but didn't seem to have any salt, soy sauce, or anything like that. It was a 5 out of 10.

We had the hunan roast pork and vegetable lo mein, and both servings were generous in quantity. The flavor and quality of ingredients was very good. They are very friendly and accommodating. I normally go in to pick up my order that I called in and that's what I did the other evening when I realized that I hadn't reviewed this wonderful place. It is a very small place. There are no sitdown tables. It's mostly all kitchen and a front counter to either take your order or pay for same. There is a bottled beverage machine in the lobby area to pick up something to drink. The China House is nestled into a small shopping center off of Jonestown Road. If you live in the area it is very convenient and they're open on Mondays. There's one other place called China wok close by as well but it is not open on Monday so China House is my go to when that happens and I'm craving my Asian food. Both places serve yummy food. This evening it was close to their closing time at 10pm and I placed an order around 20 minutes before closing and they reminded me they were closing at 10pm and so I hopped in the car after ordering and got there 10 minutes before closing and the person at the counter told me they would've stayed open even if I hadn't gotten there quite in time to accommodate me which I really appreciated! They are happy to help their customers. The man at the counter was so nice with a great big smile on his face and it brightened up my evening! They had my order ready when I got there and asked me if I wanted sauces with it, threw a bunch of sauces in my bag and I was on my way! Quick and easy! I highly recommend this place as our food is always good but it's not a dine in place it's takeout only. You can pick up a takeout menu if you're stopping by or going in to pick up your next meal.

The last few times I've had take out from here, it has been much less tasty, differently processed, assembled, and sauced, than what I'd experienced for several years. In May, I tried their Singapore Chow Mei Fun, and it was very good, as good as the best I've had in the Triad. The next three visits were, at best, disappointing! The dishes I tried after that were Shrimp Lo Mein, Pepper Steak with Onions (twice), Mongolian Beef, Chicken Wings with Pork Fried Rice, and Shrimp in Curry Sauce. All of these are dishes I had before, at least once, most more often. Only the Shrimp with Lo Mein was above average, none of the other dishes rose to the level of quality I'd received here before, in fact all were very ordinary. And the Fried Rice which was loaded with cubes of pork, had little to none. I hate this has happened because I do very much enjoy certain Chinese American dishes. There are several others around - Mr Lu's, Great China, and East China - but none are as close, nor were they quite at quality level I previously saw here.
