General gao tofu, sesame beef, veg lo mein, crab Rangoon, egg roll, hot and sour soup

*takeout review* We ordered a lot of food and overall, have to say I was pleasantly surprised. My brother picked up the order and was very unimpressed/turned off by the vibes inside, so I was a little worried, but overall it was pretty decent. General gao tofu + white rice: huge portion with big cubes of tofu. Pretty good. Sauce was kind of weak/watered down but there was a lot of it to compensate! I had half leftover for lunch the next day. Crab Rangoon: really good, just not a lot of filling. Egg roll: stay away. Tasted old. Hot and sour soup: OK. not very hot and not super flavorful. I added soy sauce which helped. Veggie lo mein: AMAZING this was the best of the bunch. I'd probably just get this next time. My brother had the sesame beef and he liked it. I would recommend for a good quick fix if you are having a craving!

I went to China Rainbow with my partner on a Friday around 6 pm. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived. All the food we ordered came out quickly and very hot. It was quality American Chinese food and tasted delicious. I was "ehh" about the scorpion bowl. It was very strong but also tasted watery. I would try a different tiki drink in the future. When we were getting ready to leave, the restaurant did have more guests. I was surprised that the other tables were sat closer together, and didn't seem to be 6ft apart. Other than this concern, COVID guidelines seemed to be followed!

Grim "decorative lights" in the bar.

Everytime we show up for dinner there is always alot of take out orders which is a good sign. There is one very nice waitress which runs around alot when the place is packed but she does a very good job of providing timely service to everyone. We really enjoy the hand pulled noodles which is a must every time we done in. They are cooked perfectly and are packed with flavor of whichever dish you choose them with. We also really enjoy their dry hot pot, especially the shrimp dry pot. It's a stir fry kind of dish packed with several veggies like red peppers, broccoli and much more! The soups are also very good and rich in flavor and are perfect for a chilly day. Some of them are served in a large portion so they are perfect for sharing. You really can't go wrong with any dish! The menu is insanely long and they have a code system for each item tagged with a letter and number which makes it easier to order. We really enjoy dining here and it's always fun to try a new dish from their large menu!

Let me preface this by saying I truly enjoy Asian cuisine, both authentic dishes from various regions and well done American Chinese food. I understand and appreciate the difference between the two. Unfortunately, this experience fell short on both fronts. Several reviews praise the pork fried rice, but what I received was simply rice, soy sauce, and a few bits of pork. Pork fried rice should have depth aromatics, egg, scallions, and proper wok flavor. This did not meet that standard. The General Gau's chicken was served cold and coated in a reddish, lightly spicy sauce, with the majority of the dish consisting of batter rather than chicken. It lacked texture, balance, and freshness. The soups were equally disappointing. The wonton soup tasted like a highly saturated version of the original, lacking real flavor and nuance. The egg drop soup was similar...flat and uninspired. I understand that American Chinese food is its own category, but even within that category, there are many establishments that execute it far better. This meal was not reflective of the praise it receives. I was genuinely looking forward to this lunch and left very disappointed. I hope the owners read this review and take it as constructive feedback. Chinese food is a delicacy for many people, myself included, and it deserves care, balance, and pride in execution. I truly hope the quality improves, because the potential could be there, but this visit missed the mark. I hope the owners review this post

Great authentic cuisine!…read more We really enjoy dining in at Taipei because everything is always so darn delicious! There are plenty of big and small tables and the waiters are very nice. They have a huge menu with some images to choose from. It's always so hard to decide because we want to order everything everytime we are craving good Chinese food! As soon as you sit down they bring you a tea pot full of hot tea which is really nice. This time we wanted to try the spicy fried fish and the sand pumpkin and mini shrimp fried rice. The fish was nice and spicy and very crunchy! The sand pumpkin had a nice texture and it was cooked perfectly. Every dish was literally made to order because each one came out hot and one right after the other. By the end of the meal we were stuffed and satisfied and we were happy to have leftovers to take home. This place never disappoints!

I ordered the beef noodle soup ($15.95) and vegetarian leek pie ($9.95). Both came out within 10 minutes. The beef noodle soup had the thin flat wheat noodle ubiquitous in Taiwanese noodle soups. The soup was well-flavored with stock. Too many of these sorts of places over-rely on soy sauce, making a salty yet thin and underflavored bowl. Not here. I will nitpick and say that I would like larger chunks of beef, not the sort of cubed stew beef you see at the supermarket. The vegetarian leek pie (as it's called in the menu) is a pastry stuffed with chive (not leek), egg, and vermicelli. It was decently salted and hot. The portion sizes were quite satisfying as well. Closing thought - this place has, so far, the closest to what I would consider a decent bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle soup I've had in the Boston metro area so far. I'm always on the lookout for it

We came for a family dinner and of course Grandma Ding was with us in her wheelchair. We only smashed into a few chairs in the big, crowded dining room. And fortunately other customers were understanding while the staff was helpful and accommodating. The small, curious child running around the dining room without parental supervision didn't get hurt when I ran him over. The menu was huge so it took a long time to order with Grandma asking questions about every item. I could see that the waitstaff was used to quick orders and rapid food delivery to the table, but the waiter remained kind and patient. He also repeated his answers loudly when she couldn't understand his English and because she didn't have her hearing aides turned up. We finally ordered a giant wonton soup, eggplant with garlic sauce, a shrimp dish, and orange chicken; all to share. Everything was fresh, hot, tasty and delicious. Grandma Ding did have to ask for the soup to be heated up because she likes it to be scalding. The dining room is worn and dishes were flying in and out as items were served and cleared. It's definitely a place for family meals, not one for an engagement proposal or romance. Perfect for our evening. Portions are generous and prices competitive with other restaurants in the area. Parking on the street is the only difficulty, particularly when you have a nonagenarian to get into the restaurant. We will definitely be back.

The scallion pancakes were excellent - the winner of the evening. The potstickers weren't what is typically referred to as potstickers, but the small gyodza that one buys by the bag in Chinese and Korean markets. These were poor and flavorless (we've bought MUCH tastier ones in H-Mart and the 88). The eggplant was very tasty, not too garlicky, and was an enormous portion. It was a bit greasy, but not too bad. The chicken with cashews was bland and boring. We dined there with a good friend and commented about the great service - fast and efficient. As I mentioned, the portion size was significantly larger that most restaurants these days. The prices were a bit high, especially considering the barebones atmosphere - but this is Newton Center, and we expected this. In short, I won't return to Ding's - there are lots of better choices.

Don't be fooled by the staid interior and lack of in-person diners in this local Asian…read moreestablishment. This restaurant, serving mostly Szechuan Chinese dishes, is a real treat in the Belmont Center district. Walking in, you're greeted by ... 2 large screens. Yes! There are not many people at the register. The screens let you choose a variety of dishes, from hot noodle soups to more traditional entrees to cold dishes. It's a bit disorienting not to have more human presence, but I guess that's just the way they run things. The dishes themselves were often top notch. The homemade pork and chive dumplings were often a bit too tough on the skins, but you could tell that they were homemade. The hot and sour beef noodle soup with glass noodle was as advertised a nice mix of hot and sour; they noodle itself was chewy, not too mushy soft, and not too tough as to render it inedible. The peanuts were crispy and really nice. The wood ear added some nice textures, and the soup itself was flavorful. I would have limited the amount of oil in the soup. The XLB (Xiao Long Bao) was really good - might be the best in the Boston area (not a town known for its XLB)! The skins were relatively thin and the soup inside really hot. Too bad there weren't ginger strips to accompanying the useful vinegary sauce. The Hand-pulled Biang biang noodle with spicy cumin lamb was quite good as well. The dish could have been presented with a bit more finesse; the lamb bits were all mixed in with the noodle, and the noodle itself was a bit thick. But the flavoring was excellent and many of the lamb pieces were rendered tenderly. The baby bok choy with tofu skin was definitely stir-fried in a lot of oil! They were really yummy, but I felt they got that nice crispy veggie effect by using a lot of oil. This environs presents something of a conundrum ... who's the market? It looks way too casual for the prices to be located in the low 10s / high 10s range (dishes were served entirely in plastic containers). But the quality of food is on par (and in some cases better) than many other Chinese restaurants in the area. But those restaurants are usually conceived of as carpeted dine-in / service places. If indeed the establishment is looking to create a casual dining experience in the Belmont area, then maybe it should remove some of the more usual shared entree type dishes on the menu (e.g. hot oil spicy fish, the famous Szechuan dish). But again, who are the expected patrons here? If they do want to have a sit-down place, make the chairs somewhat nicer (and maybe brighten up the place). Service was really quick. Looking forward to seeing this place do well!

Very typical American Chinese food (although this may be due to me ordering an American Chinese…read moredish, General Tso Chicken). The dishes were a tad too salty for my taste but the flavor itself is not bad. I wish I ordered plain white rice with the chicken as both the salt in the chicken and the fried rice was a little overbearing. However, the establishment itself is very clean and well kept. Ordering, water, and dish cleanup are all self serve but the food itself will be delivered to your table. Our waitress was very sweet and was constantly bustling around, making sure the interior was clean.
