New Name. Now Palace Buffet. I ate here a few years ago and enjoyed the food. I was really looking forward to shrimp and crawfish. Crawfish was old and not pink in color. Shrimp was not deveined. They had better shrimp on ice and I liked the coconut shrimp. Prime rib was a little fatty. I liked the salmon and other dishes. Son loved sushi. Looks like new name and owners. I liked how they had big buckets of Blue Bunny Ice Cream in a cooler where you could pick your favorite flavors for desert (I think there were 7 different flavors). Bear with me as I set this up for anyone interested in eating Chinese American food. Party of three, travel from Baton Rouge specifically to try China Palace after our purpose in BR. We could have dined there which we usually do but intent on trying CP since it's always busy and after I paid a visit weeks prior to only check out items offered and the condition and cleanliness (Health Department Ratings). Having guests with me I asked if they were up to trying this restaurant having no idea of what the food was actually like. Now on the three points review; Service was very good with a crowded lobby picking up to-go orders, and other patrons paying their bill. We were quickly ushered to our table. Additional wait staff were attentive to pickup dishes, take requests, and fulfill. Ambiance was the fact that you could talk across your table without raising one's voice or straining to hear. The restaurant was likely 60% full and noticeably quiet which is a plus in my book. Lastly Food, being THE reason for anyone to visit here. I had multiple items from wannabe Sushi rolls, pot stickers, egg rolls, red chicken on a stick or Satay. These were absolutely void of flavors. The only difference was each item's texture. My next plate I chose Mandarin Chicken with Pork fried rice and the typical brown sauce. Although this dish is a favorite of mine anytime I eat Chinese American cuisine I found very little in the way of flavor notes. Another item on the buffet line when choosing was a fairly good size pork shoulder roast. It being well roasted with some crisp outer pieces was unfortunately lacking in any seasoning. Now to sum this up in fairness Chinese cuisine, Chinese American cuisine are different treatment of a dish and quantities of seasoning agents exist as the same in both. Chinese American tends to be less seasoned than the other, but it's flavors of five spice, garlic, ginger, sugar, sesame oil, soy, rice wine, chili's, peppercorns and so on are still flavor notes that make it Chinese American style and should be detected. Furthermore China Palace is not going anywhere soon. It's nearly always busy when I pass by. It has its own following of a content customer base. read more

Service is.. interesting to say the least. The waitresses are odd and pushy. Got an attitude for not tipping.. of course I am not going to tip someone who acts rudely. Food was delicious and that's it. Would never go again due to that treatment. I also used the restroom before and one of the toilets was almost filled completely with tissue and feces. I also noticed they separated the black customers from the white customers, putting the black customers in a back room which I found pretty odd. The buffet itself is on occasion very good to OK in regards to the temperature of the food. This is the best Chinese buffet we have been to in a very long time! We travel frequently between Louisiana and Kentucky, so we have tried buffets in all states in between. China Palace is by far the best! All cooked items we tried were hot, fresh, and delicious. All sushi options were fresh and delicious! We even enjoyed apple strudel and ice cream for dessert. The waitress was so attentive and kind. She kept our drinks refilled and took plates the second we were finished with them. She was also pleasant, smiling, and asked about our day. This is your typical buffet style restaurant and reasonably priced. I stopped in for lunch one day and it was what I expected. Service was cool no issues. I wish they had more fresh veggies the green beans that were on the buffet were cold so I didn't eat them I'm guessing because that was one of the least popular items, but coming here to feed multiple people at a reasonable price with lots of different food choices is the way to go. read more

As far as I know, it's the only Chinese buffet available in this area since all the others have closed. If you go during a prime time, the food is fresh and worth the price. I have at least 3-4 entrees that are guaranteed to taste good every time. It's also convenient to be able to fix a to go plate (charged by weight) for when I'm on the go or not in the mood to dine in. They have gone up drastically in price from the last few years. It used to be 8$ a person and now it is $15. Waitresses talk shit about customers and they think we can't understand but my date could. She is bilingual. I've been dating this woman for quite a while now but it's safe to say that I won't be coming back. We go our food and the lady stood in the corner and watched us eat, she brought our checks with a smile and waited for me to fill the tip out when I put a dollar she threw the tip holder in the corner she was standing in from the table. There are a lot of pretty bad Chinese restaurants in Lafayette. China Palace is a strong contender for being the very worst. There is more than ample parking, and the staff is friendly, but the good news ends there. Compared to most buffets, the choices are limited. Most offerings looked like they had been there for some time and several were not warm. A few were surprisingly bad. Maybe the place, which is fairly new, needs some time to get its act together. Perhaps I just visited at a bad time on a bad day. Maybe the chef had been kidnapped by terrorists or skipped work to binge on Netflix that day...I don't know. The food was good, but the service was pretty interesting. They were constantly rushing us picking up plates before we can get a chance to be done with them and watching us every time we got it from the table to get anything new. I paid early to just speed the process up along as I was done eating, and my husband was not, and they proceeded to beg for a tip. The waitress just kept hanging around our table, asking us how the service was and if we were happy and how we liked it and we just said it was fine because we didn't want to be rude as we've already paid and now we're just getting ready to go but she kept asking us if it was good. Where is her lucky? Where is her lucky which my husband was very confused about it first and I had to tell him she's asking for a tip, we paid $49 for two adults. Didn't receive any drink refills and we were left alone for the whole meal which I assume was fine The lady who checked us out was overly rude and looking over my fiancé's shoulder as we were signing the check got upset when we didn't leave a tip (tip is most definitely not required at buffets) even though we already paid and they currently have a 9.95% tax on food (which I'm pretty sure is above state limit) to also add she pointed fingers at us and then hurriedly rushed to one of her coworkers to most likely talk trash in her native language I wanted to give this restaurant a chance again I really did but after 3 repeated food poisonings that left me with trips to urgent cares and eventually the hospital I don't think I'll be coming back again I really genuinely hope that they learn from this and improve but I'm not counting on it. Most awful service ever. They cornered my friend for not tipping and asked if it was good service and where the tip was. They wouldnt let her get up without tipping and once she did they said "okay you can get up now" like that is ridiculous I will never be going there again I don't like it there anyways. food isn't even that good and to be cornered is scary because they are a grown adult. The shrimp taste old, the beef is rubbery, the stuffed mushrooms were NOT good at all. I don't even know who our server is, and all of the servers passed up our empty cups multiple times. The restaurant is NOT clean. Thw re are flies everywhere. The window sills need to be wiped down and dusted and the server station needs to be cleaned. The dryer in the bathroom is caulked together because it's so old. I will not be coming back. When going to China Palace we usually eat in but when I decided to get veggie fried rice and eggrolls. We called them about 8 minutes before arriving there. When we arrived we was greeted by a friendly woman and a man they informed us that the food had 2 minutes left. The food was hot and fresh. The price was cheap. Getting home and serving it the smell of it just excited us. It had all kinds of broccoli and celery and other veggies on and in the fried rice. The eggrolls were still hot. I was amazed the food was so delicious. I think I will do this stop more often on them days where I am so busy I don't have time to cook. read more
