I ordered chicken chow mein and there was no chicken and the noodles were stuffed in a little box and there was no sauce and the noodles were dry and chalky! I always take restaurant ratings with a grain of salt. I have eaten food from places with low ratings that make great food and I have wished I hadn't eaten food from places with high ratings. China One, unfortunately, was quite disappointing and I regret eating food from there. Before I get in to the meat and potatoes of this review, I am going to preface my thoughts. I always go in to a new place with a positive attitude. Like I said above, I look at ratings and read the reviews with a grain of salt. Not every one who leaves a rating and review does it in a manner that describes their experience. In my experience, there are more good places than bad. I am an advocate of small, locally owned businesses, and I do my best to support them. I do not like giving poor reviews but in some cases, it can't be helped. This review is based wholly on my experience with what I order and ate. My order I ordered the combination plate of General Tso's chicken with fried rice, an egg roll, and an order of steamed dumplings. First Impressions The pieces of chicken looked like they had been over-cooked and the sauce was very dark; almost a brown-ish color. The fried rice was on the brown side too and reminded of Louisiana Creole dirty rice. The egg roll was also darker in color than I would have expected. The dumplings resembled large, gummy masses of dough. The Meal The rice... how do I describe it? Firm, and fluffy but overcooked. It was extremely salty too. I suspect they quickly sautéed the rice with the vegetables and a generous amount of soy sauce. Fried rice is one of those dishes that changes from region to region and from family to family, but this recipe should have been lost after the first generation. The chicken... well, it wasn't overly salty but it went to far to the other end of the salt-sweet spectrum. My teeth hurt from all the sugar. It also had a burnt taste. The taste reminded me of fry oil that was way over due for a change out. It is possible that the sauce was also burnt. It was very dark and very sweet and the sugars in the sauce could have started to burn. The chicken was tough to chew. It was probably overcooked in the fryer, which could also contribute the burnt taste. The egg roll... The egg roll was your typical mass produced, frozen egg roll. It neither stood out as amazing or subpar. It was however, to my disappointment, cold. Oh, and it tasted burnt as well. The dumplings... The dumplings, wow, words are hard to find. The wrapper was thick. It was so thick it reminded me of sheets of lasagna pasta. Dumpling wrappers are supposed to be thin, paper thin to the point where the contents are almost visible. Dumpling wrappers typically don't stick together whether they are steamed or fried. These dumplings were grayish and stuck together so that they fell apart when when I grabbed one. The filling was also very bland. Typical dumpling stuffing is minced pork mixed with garlic, ginger, and spring onion; the dumplings from China One appeared to have none of the taste I would expect from a dumpling. The dipping sauce was probably the saltiest part of the meal. It tasted like it was 95% soy sauce, 3% sesame oil, and 2% sugar. It also had unidentifiable bits floating around, or more accurately, firmly lying at the bottom of the cup. Conclusion Overall, while my experience at China One was bad and I probably won't order food from there again when I am in town. (I am here on business) It doesn't mean every experience will be bad. I have read a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews for China One, so they must do a good job sometimes. However, I have also read a lot of 1 and 2 star ratings that seem to back up my experience. In the end, I would recommend going to Panda Express over China One. At least with Panda Express, you know what you are getting, and they are consistent with the taste and quality of their food, though I don't think highly of Panda Express either. read more

I ordered from this restaurant through doordash- I got it delivered around dinner time on a weeknight. I love Chinese food and having just moved to Dekalb I was very excited to try out a new place. I ordered chicken pan fried noodles, and when they got to my apartment, they were very dry and straw-like. I know this may have been the delivery driver's fault, but it was given to me in a timely manner. It was very unappetizing to pick through the crusty, cold noodles to get to the ones that were warm and fresh. This may just be a one-off experience, but this was just what happened to me. read more

My family and I ordered from China One at least 2 times a week, we now will be taking our business elsewhere. We placed an order for delivery and were quoted 40 minutes, 90 minutes later we called them to see where our food was because it had not yet been delivered and we had not received a call informing us of any delay. The person who answered the phone not only refused to apologize or do anything to rectify the situation, he got an attitude and snapped at me for even calling. Once the delivery man finally arrived, he was extremely rude and when he noticed that no tip was written in on the receipt decided to ask for a tip and then storm off when informed he wasn't getting a tip because off the extremely long wait. Our food arrived luke warm and slightly soggy because it sat so long. Clearly China One does not value their customers or even basic customer service. I was disappointed considering the other reviews for this place convinced me to choose China One for chinese take out in Dekalb. I ordered the chicken moo shu, but I've had much better. The chicken tasted like dried pork, and there was too much sauce. The moo shu pancakes were rock hard the next day although with other take out I've experienced the pancakes would last the next day for left overs.
