Food is always good, they never mess up on my order, I just hate how the drivers don't get out the car for delivery, but expect a tip.

The ONLY things shittier than the food at this place is the service and the attitude of the staff. They can't even get fried dumpling right. WHY? Because the order I got were dumpings that had been cooked HOURS before and REFRIED. When I phoned to express my disappointment and concern, the woman who answered the phone told me to come back--in the middle of a cold, winter night. When I suggested to her the appropriate that the way to handle the issue was to redo the order and bring it to me or redo the order for me to pick up the following day, SHE HUNG UP ON ME. I called back. The guy who answered the phone YELLED AT ME before hanging up. THIS is how much this place cares about and treats long-standing patron. I have ordered from here a number of times and they cook my food wrong everytime and at this point I just have to choose a different Chinese food restaurant. I just want my chicken wings extra well done, fryer extra hard. Double fry my chicken if you have to and every time weather I pick up or call for delivery they just cook the chicken regular. This is getting disappointing and disrespectful cause it's not the first time. If I order for pick up they tell me 10 15 minutes over the phone but chicken wings take 10 to 15 minutes just to be cooked properly. Which I have told them no please cook my chicken longer I will wait 25 to 30 minutes for my order to be cooked properly not only is this what I'm ordering but it's what I'm paying for. I have gotten there and opened my food just to have them put my chicken back in the fryer and you would think they get the message that i need my chicken fryed hard. Today I order for delivery telling them at least three times to double fry my chicken where they even put me on hold for like 30 seconds and I can hear them asking if they can double fry the chicken and they get back on the phone and say yes they can it will be at least 40 minutes for delivery. Now mind you I am not lying when I say they get to my house in less than 15 minutes I live less then a 5 minute drive from the restaurant which means they only cooked the chicken for 10 minutes which means there is no way you doubled fryed something that takes 10 minutes to cook. Now once again I have to put my chicken wings in the air fryer to cook them properly. If I wanted or had the time to cook my own chicken then I would have made my own dinner. But no I choose to give this restaurant my hard earned money and explain to them to please cook my chicken extra well done and please double fry the wings if you can, which they agreed to. For them to then show up to my house within 15 minutes is a huge slap in the face. I should have driven down there to show them the chicken wings and asked them how could they double fry my chicken within an 10 minutes. I'm posting a picture of my wings being double fryed by ME the CUSTOMER who just PAID for Chinese to be delivered so I can EAT but no I had to WAIT for cooked food I bought to be cooked AGAIN by me once it was delivered. Sad part this isn't the first time I had to re fry my chicken wings once they got delivered cause they were not cooked how I ordered it. This is getting old and starting to look like my fault for still ordering from this place trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. There acting like there doing me a favor for cooking my food but yet I'm paying for it. Long story short if you want your chicken fryed hard and you order from here be prepared to plug in your air fryer or heat up some grease. read more

UPDATE - 12/15/14 : found a long shaving of metal in my general tso's chicken. Didn't even notice it until after put it in my mouth and felt it scratch against my throat. Will never order from here again. That is definitely correct here. The price is ridiculously cheap for the portion size. It is actually quite incredible. However, big portions are useless if the food itself isn't good. I bought the pint size of the chicken chow mein, the beef chow mein, and a pint size hot and sour soup for $11.75 (plus a 3$ tip to the driver) Chicken chow mein- Okay, I'm biased here because I don't really care for chicken in the first place... But I will eat it if it is good. This, unfortunately, was not. It was a weird greenish color, and the chicken looked gray. the taste was bland too. I had a bite of it, was grossed out, then moved on to the next thing. Rating : 2/10 Beef chow mein- Not bad, actually. Although, it really wasn't what I expected. It is more soup than anything else. The noodles (if you want to call them that) are thin and sparse. The taste of the beef soup is alright though. Not bad. Rating : 4.25/10 Hot and Sour soup- Honestly, I feel like my $11.75 was worth it just to find the hot and sour soup. It is excellent. For under two bucks, there is a huge amount of soup, which is incredible. It's a great soup, spicy and quite yummy. And only $1.90. That blows my mind. Rating : 8.5/10 The hot and sour soup makes me feel like I may have just ordered incorrectly, or something. And this place is so cheap, I have no problem trying them again. Oh, one thing I didn't care for regarding delivery I asked the delivery guy if he had change for a 20. He had plenty of cash on him, including a five and a bunch of dollar bills. He pulled out 6 dollars and pretended like he was confused and couldn't find more. You dumbass, I just saw you pull out a wad of cash and ones. Love this place! My sister lives in Hartford so whenever my family and I visit her, we usually order from this place. The food is always delicious and fresh and the deliveries are always on time. I've been eating at China House for about 15 years and I don't think I've ever had anything that's bad. They are ultra-consistent. I never thought to review them until I was in there a few weeks ago and had some twice cooked pork. It was really good, beyond just their consistent take out Chinese cuisine to which I was accustomed. So, I thought to myself, I owe it to China House to write them a favorable Yelp review. I've always enjoyed their hot and sour soup, but it was the twice cooked pork that impelled me to write these three paragraphs. I have interesting stories about experiences with customers, but I don't blame them for that. The people who work there have always been friendly to me and they have to put up with a lot of crap. People love to try and make orders needlessly complicated for things that cost like $2. If you're ordering a small pork fried rice, what right do you have to go through a list of the all the constituent vegetable bits and veto four of six of them? Everyone gushes over Black Bamboo. Their food is pretty good, but it's 20% more expensive with 20% smaller portions. Take out Chinese is a genre all to itself and I think that China House balances speed, price, portion size and quality nearly the best around. read more

At work when we have to go in on weekends the company buys us lunch. Lately we have been working on weekends way too often. Typically we hit up City Steam or order pizza, but yesterday to change things up we decided to go for some Chinese food (and yes that is working on a SUNDAY!). We did some searching online, but its hard to find a Chinese food place with a menu online that delivers, so I decided to hit up CampusFood.com since I knew there you could see everything. There was only one Chinese place listed so I printed out the menu and we went to ordering. The first strike to me was when they called and said "We are downstairs" so I get up and go to the lobby. Security hadn't seen them, did a quick scan of the cameras outside and said he isn't by any other entrance either. 5 minutes later we finally see him pull up. Why say you are downstairs if you clearly aren't? Some co-workers ordered crab rangoons which they said tasted good but were over cooked. One person ordered Sesame Chicken, ate 2 bites and threw it away. It tasted nothing like any other sesame chicken I have ever had in my life. I ordered Hot & Spicy chicken, which normally I get upset when I try it because its never actually spicy. This definitely had a bit of a kick to it, which upon first bite made me very happy. Then I realized there were vegetables in it even though I specifically asked for none. It even said it on their paperwork they gave me with the order. As I continued eating it I got more and more grossed out. The amount of oil/sauce it was sitting in was so thick and there was so much of it. I actually sat there for 10 minutes (not exaggerating) trying to pour all of the extra oil out of the chicken. Normally my complaint at places is that there isn't any extra because I want to pour it on my rice, but this was nuts. Another co-worker ordered the same thing and she didn't pour out the oil and complained about how bad her stomach hurt last night from it. Overall it was very disappointing, but surprisingly the leftovers taste better today than they did when it was fresh. This will be my first and only time ordering from them! read more

It's right down the street from my job, so, yeah. I can't say much about the menu, I'm loyal to the 5 items I always order from Chinese restaurants, but I think they have some of the best chicken with garlic sauce in all the land.. Tried some chicken w/ garlic sauce from a "fancy and expensive" Chinese restaurant in WHartford a couple weekends ago, it was the worst. I mean THE WORST. Which of course made me then feel compelled to take a second to shout out China House for consistently giving me tasty, cheap chicken lunches when I need it. Of course though I just read the other review about the girl seeing the rat there, just chilling in the kitchen, so now I may be a bit scared.. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Hartford. I've been coming here for years, they're always polite - the food is super fast and cheap, they always get my order right and they're very easy to work with concerning dietary restrictions. If you're vegan just specify in your order and they're happy to make things without egg or chicken broth or whatever. Also nice to be able to look into the kitchen and see how they do everything. One star off just cause the interior could be a little more welcoming/comfortable... Super bright fluorescent lights and not much in the way of decorations, furniture looks a bit outdated. Pretty poor-to-mediocre Chinese food, especially since the superior China King is a short walk away. They presumably survive due to their prime Farmington Ave. location. The pick-up service is fine; it's fast and polite. I've heard some horror stories about their delivery, but I've never tried it personally and people do love to exaggerate when dumping on unpopular restaurants. The decor is utterly generic, with small tables lining the walls on the rare chance you actually want to stay there to eat. (Hint: you don't.) The food is simply not very good. I've only eaten there a few times, but the chicken in each dish I've tried is always breaded to hell and less-than-appetizing. It's the definition of 'blah', delivery-quality Chinese food. First and foremost the employees were very polite. The food is very good, the boneless ribs are not dry and are delicious. I ordered delivery and the food including French fries were hot and fresh. I highly recommend the coral shrimp, they do not skimp on the amount of shrimps, the flavor is very delicious and is not a brown base sauce at all. read more

I have been getting food from this restaurant for my family here for over 15 years now, and have always enjoyed their food. A few months ago I went in for what will be my last visit to China House. After I order I always enjoy watching the guys cook up my food. On this visit however I watched a rat run across the floor five feet from me. I was on the other side of the counter and almost jumped. The strange thing is that the young girl working on the other side saw this rat run right between her feet and did not move or even seemed shocked for that matter. By far the worst Chinese I every had in my life I ordered Sesame chicken and it was red like they put hot sauce on it or something instead of the sesame sauce.... Portions smaller than expected....not super filling....got my food served/delivered in the small plastic container-bowls. I even thought the portion in a pint is not this little.... disappointing. Taste is decent (not blown away but good). I've had curry chicken with onion, wings and fries, beef lo mein, regular fried rice. Food was supposed to get to me at 10pm but it didn't get to me until very close to 10:30pm....personally never had chinese takeout take so long....especially after ordering it hours in advance online. If you order online in advance want it at a certain might want to schedule it 20-30minutes before you REALLY want it. 2 (maybe 2.5) stars is really more for the taste for the food and that's about it. read more

HORRIBLE!!! I placed my order ONLINE using "All Menus.com" around 4pm. Around 5pm, I called and asked where the food was, was told "is on way". Then I called again at 5:45pm, 6:30pm and I asked if they would verify my address and was told "10mins". I received a phone call around 7pm and was told "my printer wasnt working. I just got your order. It's on it's way" and I was ANGRY at that point. I called, SEVERAL times, I even repeated my address and you said it was on it's way...come to find out, it wasnt. THEN, the food was wrong and they didnt bring the drinks...that was 7:20pm...the driver went back and I finally got everything by 8:50pm. This Chinese food was very good compared to other restaurants I went to. The best dish this restaurant has is their Kung Po Chicken and Coral Shrimp. I go there often and I was never disappointed. I don't get what all the complaints are about, everything in this restaurant has been simply delicious and fresh.
