It is Friday, lent, off today, and after 11:30am. I have been scrolling since after 9:30am to go for buffet for lunch. I was looking at photos you serves what I wanted, I have not been to a buffet for 5 years. So I saw a photo of what I wanted most to eat. Baked green mussels, bake cheese mayo shrimp, and fried head shrimp. The one I wanted most was the baked mayo shrimp. Disappointed no mayo shrimp and fried head shrimp. Learn my lesson those items are for dinner at this place. I had the baked green mussels and other sea food. Mussels were good but the breaded fried shrimp I find it's not satisfying to much bread. It over powers the shrimp goodness. Then I finally came to the end of my meal with dessert. Grossed out with self serve ice cream in a stored freezer like Rite Aid. Plus the ice cream scooper dipped and stored in a pool of running water. Nope Not touching that. Then I had my dessert items went back to my table, new people were sitting at my table. So went to talk to the cashier and he send me to another table and replaced my beverage. Thank you! Now The only tasty dessert I enjoyed was the tapioca pudding and an almond cookie. The pink mouse cup, brownie ball and small chocolate square cake with chocolate chips. The pink mouse cup was good but it was probably just cake whipped cream in a cup. Brownie and cake no chocolate flavor. I was only there for 54mins counting I constantly went to wash my hands after each plate I finished and wore serving gloves while using serving utensils. Because I use my fingers to peel of the scallops of the mussels. The 2nd table I ate at cushion was taped with duck tape and cushion flat. The cashier and workers were kind and cleaned the tables well. Will I eat here again, NO. Lesson learned next place will call and ask what is on the menu. read more

China Great Buffet is located in a strip mall with lots of parking. There's also street parking. It is on the corner of Valley and Mountain View Road. You can't miss it. We got there around 11:30-11:45 so we were seated right away. There were people waiting in line by the time we left. This buffet has a lot of variety. We went for lunch on a Sunday. They have a Mongolian grill where you select your ingredients and have them cook a dish for you. There were plenty of seafood - different dishes of shrimp, crabs, oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, crawfish, crab legs - as well as chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, salads, fruits, desserts, etc! There's also real ice cream that you scoop out. So many yummy food. They're really good at refilling all the dishes that are getting low. We were all really full when we left. Come hungry! The price is a little higher on the weekends but very reasonable for the variety of food that's offered. I would definitely be coming back. read more

China Great Buffet is probably the cheapest Chinese buffet in San Gabriel Valley. Located in a plaza near Payless Foods, there's a good amount of parking spots here. They've added a few TVs showing local channels, but the carpeted floor is sometimes dirty and it does get crowded here on the weekends. Service is average, they pick up your plates often but you do have to ask for beverage refills. Price: $7.99 weekday lunch, dinner $10.99 and weekends are $12.99. Salad Section - Good selection, bigger than the typical Chinese buffet. They've got good quality seaweed salad. Don't like their ceviche. Mongolia BBQ - Newly added section, not a fan of this section as they use low quality meat. Japanese Section - Unlike other buffet places, they always serve salmon sashimi at dinner, but they serve better quality salmon sashimi on the weekends than they do during the weekdays. Seafood - Easily worth the price of the buffet. Includes seaweed salad, giant oysters, butter cream shrimp, and snow crabs. Hot Food Section - Their Chinese food is actually not that bad. The roast beef is alright. Dessert and Fruit - Most of the pastry desserts are bad to mediocre. The fruit section is where you should go. If you are not picky and want to eat a lot of different foods for a low price, this place is worth your checking it out. Back then when I was younger, I REALLY loved this place. Even my family loved this place. But last night, man what happened? My grandma, dad, my sister, and I went out to eat here because it's been one year since we've been eating there. When we got there, it was near dead empty. Only 3 tables were taken by people. Now, that's not a complain. It's just quite odd because many people came here before and it's always so packed. We didn't think much. Until when we got to the food! The clams were dry because it's been sitting there for almost a whole day. They don't give actual salt and pepper shakers, so when my dad makes salt and pepper with lemon juice, it took him really long due to the quantity per package and how they're not in little bottles anymore. My family really loves meat, so do I. So we decided to go grab some ribs. When we got some of the ribs and took a bite, the meat was still raw. We immediately spitted it out and decided to go on and grab a new plate instead and get something else. My sister really loves the gravy in broccoli and mushrooms. I don't blame her since we eat so much vegetables too. But when she observed the broccoli, it wasn't gravy. It was jelly. The sauce has settled and turned into a gelatin substance. Near the grill area where you choose your raw foods then give it to the person working there, all I see is the worker on his phone. After selecting my foods (which is beef and eggs), they made it and when I ate it, the beef was really good. But the eggs were salty, most likely due to too much soy sauce. Had the cheese wontons. Always my favorite foods to eat at a buffet. When I took a bite, the cheese was so mushy, and firm. I don't know how that works, but it feels like a rice cake texture and tasted really odd. The desserts weren't much of an issue, except they need to refill their desserts when it's empty. Overall, food was terrible. Do not come here unless you want to crap your pants afterwards, and unless you're looking for poor freshness of foods. The only thing that was good about this place was the service. El Monte has an excellent Asian buffet and I'm shocked I didn't find out about this place sooner. This place is an absolute steal at $10.99 for dinner! Their selection is pretty enormous and the food quality is not lacking (with the exception of the soft serve machine). My buddies and I hit this place up for dinner and we were not disappointed. Their Japanese food mainly consist of nigiri and cut sushi rolls. The fish to rice ratio is fine, and the rolls aren't drenched in sauce. They served tuna and snapper sashimi and that was decent as well. Some of my favorite items include the beef ribs smothered in BBQ sauce, the prime rib, the endless sea of crab legs, and a very tasty French beef (black pepper beef) that went amazingly well with the green beans. Their coconut shrimp is a guilty pleasure, but a little too sweet. Their orange chicken has a bomb crispy breading too, but you're mainly going to get breading. They have a Mongolian BBQ grill that was very busy when we went. They offer the standard soups (hot and sour, clam chowder, miso, egg drop), desserts, baked fish and salmon, mussels, clams, and even craw fish! I'm positive that you will find something to enjoy and chow down on if you are into Asian buffets. Asian buffet in El Monte isn't surprising but Great China Buffet is one of the better ones. We came here on Thanksgiving and they offered a lobster special for $15.99, about $2 higher than the normal week prices. Not bad. We came here at 5 in the evening to beat the crowd and it was a smart move. Rush hour was 6-7. The buffet selection is 4:1 comparing the proportion savory to sweets. Stocked sushi bar on the left, seafood and Mongolian bbq on the right, but you can't forget Chinese food right in the center. My favorite definitely has to be their oysters and clams. On this special day they also added baked lobsters topped with mayonnaise. They also have king crab legs which I thought were okay. I was surprised to hear they have crab on normal weekdays and weekends as well. Come on a weekday and you'll only be paying $8.69 for lunch and $12.99 for dinner! read more

Average food for a pretty high price. My family went on a Saturday, around 4:30pm and the whole restaurant was packed. The avocado in the sushi that was sitting out was pretty brown, which looked unappetizing. I know it's weird, but I liked how this buffet had mashed potatoes and potato salad, as a lot of buffets I have been to don't. The mashed potatoes were very tasteless however. The waiters and waitresses that served us did their job but went very friendly. Due to the many customers however, I don't blame them. Another thing I liked were the oysters. It's probably a better thing that they're cooked and not raw. I wouldn't want to try them if they were raw.... There is almost nothing that distinguishes China Great Buffet from a stereotypical Chinese buffet. Most of the items are, of course, high in carbohydrates to fill you up faster and prevent you from running the place out of business. This means lots of fried rice, noodles, egg rolls, fried chicken, you get the idea. And of course, none of it tastes very good. I don't think I need to really hone in on any specifics, as you probably know what you're in for. And if you're here to indulge in the fancier items like shrimp, clams, and crab legs, you'll probably be able to tuck away a few plates worth of them given that the items are So small. I never knew it was possible for crawfish to contain less meat than was already standard. No seconds were had by yours truly. To their credit, the interior is certainly clean and spacious (as the owner's flattering self-review points out). And while I wasn't too thrilled with my meal, $13 after tax is minimal damage for this kind of place. The ubiquitous Engrish is hilarious though. These are the same owners as Itchi Ban that was located in El Monte off of Peck. That buffet is now closed and they moved all their crust infested chairs and tables to the new place. As this place seems to be pretty popular because the food of slightly better then sub par. It doesn't makeup for incredibly dirty furnishings and food prep areas. I was disgusted walking in and being hit with the intense smell of rotting food. This buffet may be popular but it's also a risk to your health. This place is truly a dirty place to eat. read more

You come to these places with low expectations and you'll do alright. My dad loves these types of places, and when I say love, I mean LURRVVEESS. It's all he talks about. It's cheap and you can get your monies worth of foods if you know what to eat. Prices on weekdays lunch is now $8.29 and weekend all day is $12.99. That price is pretty competitive, considering the variety of what they serve. It's also cheaper than other buffet places like Hokkaido and Zen. Anyways, we came today around 1:30pm and it was packed. Holy moly! No parking anywhere and about a 15 minute wait. I've never seen a buffet place this busy around there. We were seated and I immediately headed for the king crab legs. I think my family ate at least 5 plates of those... LOL to the point where we just waited next to the crab legs until fresh ones came out. But dang, they were good! They are way better than Ichiban buffet because the meat is actually edible ... you crack one open and you can pull out huge pieces. (They didn't stick to the side of the legs making it hard to pull out). The clams are also very good. The color is pearly and white and didn't have sand. Other buffet places have not so fresh clams, but the ones here are very juicy and flavored nicely. I think I personally ate one whole plate of those. Sushi is not the greatest. The raw fish looked skeptical so I didn't try it. The Chinese selection is great. They got fish balls and some stir fried stuff that tasted pretty good. The mussels and seaweed are also very flavorful. One thing I didn't like was the dessert. Compared to Ichiban, it sucked. So, I opted to eat their fruit,.... watermelon, honeydew, huge grapes and cantelope. Pretty fresh. My family stayed there for almost 2 hours, which is a pretty long time for a buffet. Went there on a Saturday for my grams birthday. Food- Greasy and buffet trays were empty and needed to be refilled most of the time. Sushi/Sashimi did not look fresh. I've been to better buffets with more variety of foods and desserts. Environment- Dessert area was a mess from the chocolate fountain. No one was really cleaning up around the buffet area or restaurant in general. Restroom was dirty and had leaking water from the toilet. Service- Lady took our drink order and brought our drinks.. that was about the last time we saw her. We had to go up to find someone to get refills or any other services. Overall, the price is cheap and food is meh but I would be scared to get food poisoning. I probably won't be back to this restaurant. If you don't care about the quality of food, service and want a cheap buffet then you can try this restaurant. read more

I think the only think that had this place going for me was the price. It's on the lower end but this was a good lesson in the saying, "You get what you pay for." Came around 5:30pm and everything looked fine after a quick walk through. They offer a variety of seafood options but no crab legs. They also had a Mongolian stir fry and sushi section among your typically Chinese-American fare. However, upon closer inspection, everything looked like it had been sitting there for awhile and super greasy. Gloves were offered as you self-serve but hardly anyone used them. Staff wasn't monitoring the food frequently so several tongs were just sitting right in the food where you would normally grab the utensil. I think it's disgusting when everyone has touched it and then it's swimming in the food. The food itself wasn't very good. Nothing remarkable at all and I probably would've been better to have gone to Panda Express. The dining area was also well use, sticky from grease, and staff packed patrons into one area instead of spreading them throughout the restaurant. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. As you walk in, you can sense the atmosphere of good fresh food. Upon walking through the available selections, your initial senses are confirmed, but most importantly, your options are not limited. I visited this location on a Monday and found it pretty busy for a weekday - not a bad thing, since it means the food is being brought out frequently and not sitting for too long - so I can just imagine what a weekend would look like. The taste of the food is great for a buffet and was not disappointing. You have a wide array of food options, with a Mongolian BBQ selection as well. There is also a wide selection of deserts available ( the only thing I didn't like is they have the ice cream scooper in a water holder which can become contaminated by too many hands graping it ) which is good to see since other buffet locations provide too small of a selection option in this catagory. Overall the staff was attentive, the food was good and fresh, and the atmosphere was good for a buffet location. I will be returning. :) read more

The last time i updated my review for this place was in 2015. I have been going to this buffet since then. This place still stands to be one of the better buffets in the area, imo. Again, this is a buffet with reasonable prices- do not expect high quality food. I have been there on days with exceptionally good food, and days with mediocre to bad tasting food. It's expected. Some of the stuff I still enjoy there: pizza- yum! really cheesy and has a crust that isn't too dry or crunchy. sushi- still good, not a lot of changes. crab legs- be prepared to fight with people for these. there's usually a line and if you're not the third person in line, you probably have to wait until the next batch. I've had it on days when it is just right and really sweet, and some other days it is so salty, i didn't even want seconds. soups: -clam chowder: good when it is nice and creamy. Once had it and was super watery. -fake shark fin soup: good. one time it tasted like soy sauce and water.. -seafood soup: love the shrimp bits, imitation crab meats and egg. cream cheese wontons- i think i noticed a difference over the past few times i went there. The filling used to be more thick and pasty, and now it is kind of sweet and less thick.. Can't tell if good or bad. string beans: still one of my favorites here. sometimes, its good, other times, the beans are too old. orange chicken: can be a hit or miss. sometimes super soggy, other times nice and crunchy. Be aware that there may be some tendons hiding in there.. garlic bread: try it!!! looks hard and crunchy, but don't be fooled by its exterior. super soft once you bite into it. ice cream: total thumbs up to them for getting rid of that ice cream machine and replacing it with rite aid style ice cream tubs. Totally beats that old ice cream machine. It is self serve with three flavors: vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate. Line can be long and may take a while because a lot of people don't know how to scoop the ice cream out. One of the things I look forward to eating here. Soda: sometimes it tastes like soda water.. there's no air in it like they left it out for 2 days and then gave me the soda. service: there are good servers and bad servers. as long as they take away the plates in a timely matter, I can't complain much. It's not the same anymore. Service change and quality of food. Food taste like it's left out there for a long time or reheated and service is quick but not with care. It more like quickly eat and leave type of service. There's isn't anything to enjoy. It's not as lively as before. $13 ayce is un-complainable! The place is surprisingly clean and not small and they have a good variety of Asian food. When I went with my family and cousins during dinner time there wasn't too many people there so we were seated right away. I agree with the reviews that say this place is better than Zen buffet... at least they're not stingy on the amount of food they give out. For the cheap price (around $13 for weekends), the food isn't too bad and edible for the most part, but you still shouldn't expect anything fancy here, aside from clams and crab legs. The sushi is still the typical California roll variants that you would find at other Chinese-operated buffets, along with some regular sashimi like salmon. Parking is okay; they share the parking lot with a supermarket and other stores, so don't expect lots of it though; also conveniently close to the 10 Freeway for those of us who don't live right next door to this place. read more
