After being told that this was one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area we decided to try it out. First off, when you walk in you seat yourself. There is no sign stating that so me and my husband stood at the door for a minute or so thinking that someone would seat us before we realized that and then we just decided to grab a table ourselves. There was only one server and she was doing everything and there was only one cook, so don't go if you're in a hurry. Plus, this was during lunch hour rush, so I'm sure that added to our wait time. It's very clean and simple inside the restaurant with public parking to the far right of the building. Lots of variety on the menu and the prices are super affordable. I ordered the $7.99 lunch special that came with egg drop soup, fried rice and one item off the main menu, which I chose sweet and sour shrimp. My husband ordered the chicken lo mein. The egg drop soup was one of the best that I've ever had! EVER!! My sweet and sour shrimp was crunchy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside and super fresh, as were all the vegetables. This dish was just simply delicious! My husband loved the chicken lo mein and said that was the best he'd ever had. I even tasted it and the freshness is unbelievable!! EVERYTHING IS FRESHLY COOKED! So awful. Super dry Hunan chicken. It had peanuts. I have never before had dry Hunan chicken, and I have had a lot of this over my lifetime. This Hunan chicken was not real Hunan chicken. Just awful. It is clear that there are no decent Chinese food restaurants in this part of South Dakota. Ugh! read more

I was SO looking forward to this with the great reviews. The food itself was 3.75 stars, good taste and quality. The rice was a little ho Hum. But what got me were the portions. There couldn't have been more than half a chicken breast (9-10 tiny pieces) of sesame chicken with our dinner. We also had the cashew chicken plate. We were looking for more food shortly thereafter, and for almost $30 we were surprised about that. Bummed! read more

China Garden - Sesame Chicken Dinner - Chinese Near Me - Belle Fourche, South Dakota

I have to admit to reading previous reviews about China Garden in BF, SD. The majority were very positive but the negative were very negative and seemed to point to a problem with wait staff. So, it was with this in mind that I visited the establishment for lunch. To say that the outside is uninviting would reveal the reviewer to be from some place other than here. This is Belle Fourche ('beautiful fork') South Dakota and not downtown Manhattan or the Wharf in San Francisco. Belle Fourche is an outpost on the edge of rugged farming and ranching country so exteriors tend to be more functional than aesthetic. So I am okay with that. The interior, in contrast, is bright, clean, and inviting. We were amongst half a dozen guests when we arrived, were promptly seated and given menus, but then largely ignored for the better part of ten minutes. In retrospect, I am okay with that since once our choices were received, hot tea (extra @ $3/person) and then soups (comes with lunch special) arrived promptly. On the downside, we had to remind our waitperson that we had requested water and chopsticks (this is SD so they correctly assume that most SD-ans don't use chopsticks when eating Chinese.) The tea was fine, once left to brew long enough in the pot and stayed hot during our lunch. My companion ordered egg drop soup which was also fine and hot. My soup, hot/sour, was hot but also so salty as to be unenjoyable. This was too bad since the flavor was very good as was the appearance. I could only finish about 1/3 of it and set it aside. When our waitperson cleared this there was no "how was your soup?" Our main courses, mine 'Twice cooked pork (spicy per menu)' and 'Sechzuan Beef' arrived shortly there after. Both proteins were well prepared, the beef being the more tender of the two. Twice cooking the pork, while providing additional flavor, apparently toughened it a bit, We found neither to be excessively spicey since we avoided the obvious whole chili peppers. I particularily enjoyed the pork having never sampled twice cooked. It had a refreshingly distinctive ginger flavor which went well with the ample amount of house fried rice that accompanied it. So, this is a place worth checking out. It appears to be a family run business which is worth supporting for sure. I suggest trying something different each time. read more

My family and I visited Belle Fourche to see the Geographic Center of the US today. We decided to grab an early dinner at China Garden. We received a warm welcome from the owner when we arrived. We ordered the salt and pepper tofu, Singapore noodles, veggie lo mein and fried rice, orange beef, general tsao chicken, and many other dishes to name. All of the dishes we tried were delicious. The salt and pepper tofu was outstanding!!!! It is has the perfect balance of salt and spice that will keep you coming back for another piece. I can easily eat a whole order by myself. In fact, we ordered the salt and pepper tofu and a few noodle dishes to take with us for a late night dinner (it really is that good!). The portion size of each dish is very generous and the price is great! The menu has something for everyone's taste. The owner was happy to accommodate requests for a few vegetarians in our group. The restaurant is owned by a hardworking family who definitely knows how to make delicious food and give great service to their guests. If you are in Belle Fourche and would like to have a great dining experience, I would definitely recommend China Garden. Enjoy!!! read more

We placed our order at 6:30 PM. The host said our food would be ready to go at 7:20. This was a to go order. We arrived at 7:10 and she told us it would be another 15 minutes. This puts us at 7:25. I am OK with this. At 7:42 she tells us it's going to be another 15 to 20 minutes. At that point we asked for a refund and we were provided one. This is unacceptable service. To be quite honest it's terrible service. If they would've told me it would be an hour and a half I would've waited for an hour and a half but you told me it would be 50 minutes which then turned into an extra half hour with no food in sight. read more

I love, love, love this place. But mostly because of their unique way of preparing their Seseme Chicken which is more of a sweet/spicy glaze sauce than a gravy type like in most other restaurants. Some of their other items do not seem to be as tasty as other area competitors (rangoon, lo mein, etc) and the biggest issue I have is the portions are small for the price you pay [when comparing to area or nation serving sizes/prices of other Chinese restaurants]. However, again, I LOVE the people, the Seseme Chicken, and I would 100% rather pay a bit more and have them here than not have them at all!!!! I'm glad they are a dining option. read more

Found this great little family run place as we were traveling through Belle Fourche, couldn't have been more pleased! The food was hot, fresh, flavorful and priced right and the service was top notch! My wife had the Cherry Shrimp and I had the Kung Pao Chicken, both were great, not to mention the hot and sour soup, one of the best I've had! I thought from the good reviews on Yelp this would be a better experience. I ordered the individual combination plate. It consists of a bowl of WonTon soup, an egg roll, fried or steamed rice and a entree menu item. Wonton soup was very hot which was great but very lackluster in the flavor department. Then came the egg roll, which was tasty except for being over cooked so the rice dough was very hard. Lastly came the fried rice ( very bland with carrots?) and perhaps 2 or 3 ounces of beef in my Szechuan Beef. Lots of veggies ( because they're cheap) and lots of rice. Stopped in for a late lunch. The salt and pepper tofu is a MUST! We even ordered 2 to go. The orange beef, general tao's chicken, lo mein, and Singapore noodles were delicious. What a little gem of Chinese restaurant. Family run, for sure. Honestly one of the best Chinese stops I've ever made. Presentation, taste, and portion sizes were absolutely perfect compared to some of those " feeding trough" Chinese buffets I've been to. Had the most perfectly formed and presented egg roll I've ever seen. The bowl of Won Ton soup was excellent and the ingredients fresh. I've had the dish plenty of places and never had it burnt and taste so horrible. We couldn't even eat it and she said sorry and gave us a $3.00 discount. China Garden is small, cozy and CLEAN. This is small-town America Chinese food done very well. I mean that it's not Spicy House in San Diego (my favorite "real" Chinese). The menu offers what you would expect. The vegetables were very fresh and nicely cooked. We ordered the "C" dinner menu for 2, and for $30 we had enough left over for 2 small meals. We were particularly pleased by the hot and sour soup. We live about 15 miles away in Spearfish, and we will eat our Chinese food in Belle Fourche from now on. read more

I really have no idea how this place is so well reviewed. I was staying in Belle Fourche for an evening and asked the receptionist at the hotel where in town she'd recommend for dinner. She immediately said "China Garden." I checked online and only saw glowing reviews. The service was lacking at best, but I'm usually not too concerned with that as long as they do a decent job and are at least a bit attentive. My biggest concern... the food. It was not good, and there was SOOOO little of it. I'm not a big guy, I don't need a gigantic mound of food to please me, but come on. I ordered the Hunan Beef combination dinner with soup and egg roll. The soup was the only saving grace (and why I gave it 2 stars and not 1) as it was delicious, however, the hunan was bland beyond all belief other than the 4 spicy peppers thrown in which only added flavor when you ate them, then it was just heat, not flavor. It also had peanuts in it, to my knowledge hunan doesn't have peanuts. But the real icing on the cake (and why I'm leaving a review) I could have fit it all in a tea cup. I am NOT exaggerating, the hunan beef itself was at best an appetizer sized portion. I left hungry. I ordered a combination dinner, I am not a big eater, I ate everything I was served, and yet I somehow left a chinese restaurant hungry!?!? Really? read more
