The service is absolutely terrible! I couldn't board my flight as my passport is expired in March of 2020 and i was traveling in Nov. They did not inform me that some countries including CHINA AND INDONESIA required your passport to be at least 6 months valid ! When I booked the ticket, they should have Inform me check the expiration date on my passport, but they didn't. They had me on hold for quite awhile , one lady said to me oh there's no need to argue about it and hung up on me. I'm not saying that they need to keep a list of countries but at least when someone book a flight and provide the passport info, they should really say something like oh hey just make sure you check your passport because it looks like it's less than 6 months valid. The staff at the counter when i was at the airport were also rude, they kept asking if my friend would travel without me and refuses to give her boarding pass to her unless she tells them whether or not she's traveling without me. We were deciding on what to do and they stood there being super rude and unprofessional! I would not recommend their services at all. It's one thing that they refuse to help me or acknowledge their fault but they couldn't even maintain professionalism, extremely rude and I'm extremely disappointed. A Thought to keep in mind though- they are so quick to tell you when you enter method of payment wrong or billing zip code wrong but yet can't tell you about passport related info ! read more

China Eastern has the worst customer service I have ever experienced across any industry. They do not care about you, your experience, your opinion, or even about taking your money. They have no business being a star alliance partner. If you have any alternate option for flights, use the other options. If you can book the same flight through delta, do that so you can utilize delta customer service instead of China eastern who will not even pretend to help you or care about helping you. (This review is written from the air train after customer service told me on the phone they couldn't help me purchase an upgrade seat over the phone and I had to go to JFK in person, *which I did* only to find an empty counter during regular business hours, and when I called customer service back to see if they could either help me or find out if there was a different counter I should go to they say "I don't know I'm in California" and hung up on me.) read more

I would discourage people from flying with this airline. There are reasons why the airfare is cheaper than competitors. I recently flew from NYC to Shanghai and here's what I experienced: - crumbs in the arm rest (so they didn't clean between flights) - no real choice of food. They show you the menu but only one choice was available and the food was not good. - rude and unhelpful flight attendants Bottom line, you get what you pay for. read more

Yeah so about a Month before our trip to Bali the airport instituted a shutdown every night between 1 am and 6 am - thus cancelling our 3:00 am departure to Shanghai. Unfortunately, despite a months worth of opportunities the airport never disclosed this to us! We had some concerns after our flight from Shanghi into Bali was delayed so we called the airline the day before our departure, where a rep whose English was questionable at best assured us everything was fine. It was not, our flight was cancelled and we were put up in a horrible hotel near the airport. They put us on a flight the next morning, and by the time we landed in Shanghai we missed the ONLY flight to NYC by 1 hour!! They put us up in an even worse hotel in China. AVOID THIS AIRLINE AT ALL COSTS. Spend the extra 700 bucks, fly a real carrier and get to your point of destination without delays and frequent forced stays at airport hotels. read more

Old reviews prepared me for a tradeoffs of quality for price but the Managment must have read the reviews. I went from JFK to Xiamen via Shanghai in business class- a pleasure. Easy check in. Professional English speaking staff throughout the trip. Good menu selection and tasted fine. In flight entertainment was what I have had in other airlines. After taking a perfectly fine CE flight from New York to Hong Kong, I felt compelled to write a review here to set the record straight. Reading all these terrible reviews from earlier I was terrified to take my flight, expecting the absolute worst. It was FINE. No it wasn't the best flight in my life but who really cares! It's cheap and gets you to where you need to go. My flight (NY to Shanghai to Hong Kong) had minimal waiting time in the airport compared to all the other options I reviewed on Kayak, and each of my flights was right on time. I will say that I only brought carry-on luggage so have no experience with the check-in bag experience (the lines at JFK to check in luggage definitely looked horrendous so keep that in mind when going to the airport). The flight attendants do not all speak English fluently but enough to get by just fine. There were no vegetarian options for the food but I had lots of very edible and quite tasty noodles and rice that got the job done for airplane food. And I feel the need to correct something very misleading in all these reviews - the entertainment options were great! Tons of new Hollywood movies all in English (with Chinese subtitles). And there was absolutely NO smell on my plane. Sat next to perfectly polite passengers on each leg of the flight. I have had a vastly better experience than the other reviewers (maybe I just got really lucky?). But in my opinion China Eastern is a solid airline that provides an average/above average flying experience. read more

WORST 2 FLIGHTS I'VE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE and I'll never forget the nightmare. I bought a round-trip ticket from China Eastern and they lost my luggage both times!! I arrived in Sydney, Australia with no fresh clothes or underwear and had to live that way in a hotel for 2 days before they finally found it. No apology, no money refunded. Coming back home they lost my luggage again! I'm still waiting for them to find my 2 bags, their phone numbers either are out of service or just keep ringing with no option to leave a message. Besides having the worst phone service and losing my luggage constantly, the plane is dirty, completely uncomfortable, puts pork in your vegetarian meals, the flight crew have terrible attitudes and were very rude, they only show Chinese commercials or Chinese movies with no subtitles, and yes the plane does have a certain putrid smell. I couldn't listen to the radio because it only had Chinese artists, the films were all in Chinese with no dubbing, and there was absolutely nothing I could do on a 30 hour plane ride from NY to Sydney. I even remember when they tried to hand me a burger and I told them I'd rather have some peanuts because I don't eat meat, they were so rude and told me to 'Just Try It.' I had to beg them for 2 bags of peanuts instead, which they handed me with such disdain. I paid $1,100 of my hard-earned money (which was very hard to save) and got treated like a stowaway in a ship's cabin. It was absolutely dreadful and I urge anyone considering using their airline to Please Re-think it. I'm never using them ever again!! read more

I made a Yelp account to write a review for China Eastern. After seeing the negative reviews, I felt that I had to balance them out by giving my own experience. 1. Price was amazing -- less than $700 rt from Kuala Lumpur to New York 2. They lost my bag, which was very disappointing, but was most likely due to the Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai flight being delayed and me having only 5 minutes to run from one gate to the next in Shanghai. However, they personally delivered the bag to my house the next morning. 3. They let me postpone my return trip twice, even after I'd accidentally missed the return flight. The first time it was a $62 fee, the second was free, they simply sent an email saying "please stop changing your flight". As far as customer service concerns go, the New York office number never answers, but the China one does and the New York office always promptly replies to emails during business hours. 4. The flight. For the JFK-Shanghai legs, I flew in a brand new plane with welcome drinks, unlimited food, and all else you would expect from a full service airline. When I got to the airport I asked if I could change me seat and they gave me a full row to myself. While the food isn't what you'd get on a Singapore or Qatar flight, it was decent enough and the flight attendants were very kind and attentive. read more

I created this account just so I can document my about the worst experience I had traveling from NYC to Tokyo and back. I booked this flight through Expedia but trying to get in contact with China eastern through any of their multiple numbers was a joke, no one ever answered. Staff is so rude, people at the airport fighting, passengers were nasty. I wanted to upgrade and cabin crew ignored me then completely lied and said I couldn't when first class was NOT full. Then at the airport in Shanghai the staff were even more rude! For my return my plane kept being delayed due to "air traffic control" so I missed my connecting and they rescheduled everything and had me waiting at the airport. This was going on all day, the people from the 10am flight were at the airport waiting for their flight, my 1:50 flight same and as I was there they were checking in the 5pm flight and the 10am flight still wasn't there! Just crooks and mean people. I refused to Spend the night in an airport in shanghai with nasty people (no one even tries to help you if you are not Asian) and had to book a brand new flight back home with a different airline. Never again will I be cheap when flying this was the worst treatment and honestly ruined my whole trip. read more

Well I got food poisoning. The no phone rule was annoying, and the flight attendant took my headphones out of the plug towards the end of my flight so I didn't get to finish my movie! I also noticed when anyone tried to change seats, the flight attendants sent them back to their original seat. Other than that I would say it's a pretty normal flight, lots of movies with a large tv. Just be careful with the food, maybe stick to the free beer. read more
