I love the food at this restaurant, and the customer service consistently exceeds my expectations!

American Chinese takeout done right. Recently, I called in to order, and she made sure to get the order correct! We ordered a Moo Goo Gai Pan (C2) and Szechuan Chicken (C2), both with the dinner add on option [+3.50 for a fried egg roll, your choice of soup (wonton, egg drop, or sweet and sour), and your choice of rice (fried or steamed)]. It was definitely enough food for 6 people lol, so next time we'll just order one dinner entree and split between the two of us. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is the sweet and sour soup. My friends love the sesame chicken, pot stickers, and the egg rolls if you need more options! read more

We had carry out and it was amazing as always, I had chicken fried rice, my son had General Tao's chicken.

I have been going to China Cottage for years. However today might be my last visit. The food was not good. Chicken was over breaded and over cooked. Pot stickers did not taste fresh. They had rude children taking payment and orders. I'm sad. read more

Stopped by for lunch today and had the garlic chicken lunch special. The hot and sour soup was the best I've had in a long time. Of you're used to the bland stuff served sound Katy, you are in for a flavor and spice surprise! The garlic chicken and fried rice arrived just as I was finishing my soup. The garlic chicken was excellent! The fried rice was way to salty for me. This is the reason for 4 stars. Brown rice was not an option. I will definitely return. read more

My husband & I ordered 2 large egg drop soup, 3 pork egg rolls & 6 crab ragoon & the bill with tax was $30 & some change. This was a to go order but we ordered from an old menu so the prices were not correct. I understand the prices have increased but won ton wraps haven't. First timer... Great, friendly service! We got the potstickers, Cottage dumplings, sesame chicken, happy family, and fried rice. The potstickers were so good - I could drink the dipping sauce. Will definitely be making trips back to Katy just to go to this restaurant! Everything my family of four ordered was fantastic. We started with the calamari and I wish I knew the recipe for the sauce they use to top it, so delicious! We also had chicken fried rice (our go-to and this was perfection), sweet and sour chicken and the happy family meal. My husband and I had egg drop and hot and sour soup as well. Hidden gem on Mason Road, if you like Chinese food, you must try this place! The portion size was enormous, one dinner plate could feed two. Recommend the garlic chicken dinner plate and the General Tao's chicken, it was excellent. read more

It's been over five months since we've come back due to their sporadic hours... two wasted trips to find them "unexpectedly closed" caused me to leave the previous reviews! This afternoon, I was in the area and was craving their food! I drove by at 4:30pm and found them OPEN! I had to eat here because we've yet to find a place that makes their fried rice (which reminds us of our favorite, in NYC, "Susie's")... we always order the House Special Fried Rice and it's still just as good as it always was! I also love their spring rolls because they are extra light and crispy! Had the egg drop soup, as well... no crunchy stuff to drop in but still very tasty! I missed this place and it was a real treat to come back! Five star food!!! Highly recommend! I'm giving them "four stars" because I'm still concerned that the posted hours are not always adhered to? BUT, we will just call ahead the next time because their food is too good to do without! read more

I was in the area recently and hadn't been to China Cottage in awhile so I took a chance and ordered carry-out. The food was just OK, but while I was waiting on my food order, I noticed that the place had gone down-hill in terms of cleanliness, (from the previous owners). Lots of clutter on one side of the dining area; floors didn't look like they had been vacuumed in awhile, and it just left me with an uncomfortable vibe. I was so hoping the reviews were correct but we were nothing but disappointed. Everything was so blah, bland and flavorless. We had the fried rice, honey walnut chicken, salt pork chop, lo mein and stir fried noodle - plenty of options to mix flavors up a bit but China Cottage fell short of...everything. My daughter and I decided to try this place for lunch because of the high Yelp reviews. We like wonton soup and egg rolls with our meals. Most Chinese restaurants offer those things with their lunch specials. Not here. The soup choices are egg drop, hot and sour or creamy chicken. The egg rolls is 1.50 extra or you can get a crab rangoon for .75 extra. Fortunately the main entree did not have any taste at all; except for the extreme amount of salt. read more

Egg rolls are great, egg drop soup is delicious, Lo Mein is tasty, Mongolian Beef, shrimp fried rice along with the Empress Shrimp are all also really good. All ingredients are fresh, nothing is canned or frozen like other places. read more

I believe they may have changed owners or management. The food tastes different. The General Tso's and Hunan Chicken are very spicy now. Egg rolls under the prior owners were the very best, these are good but not what I really loved. Egg drop soup is really thick. Overall the food is still very good but I wish they would have kept the same recipes. read more

The previous owner Mary has retired. I had the moo goo guy pan and it was just ok. No seasoning no taste.

Service here is great. It's a family owned local place and has that feel to it. The food is decent. Basically it is the typical Chinese place but one of the better ones in town in my limited opinion. I don't go to a bunch of Chinese restaurants honestly. Sweet Tea Rating: 1/10 Unfortunately they don't have sweet tea and their regular tea is terrible. The taste is not only bitter, it's just nasty in my opinion. It tastes old to me. Maybe it's just the brand of tea. read more

My wife and I loved this place! It's one of those restaurants that's hidden away off the road a bit without any grand marquee to point you to the front door, but it holds all the wonderful Chinese foods that you crave with tons of flavor. Our server, Jenny, was amazing. She was attentive, friendly, and right by our side as soon as we needed something. I even heard the table behind us referring to her by name and talking to her like they come there every weekend to see her and eat, which is always a good sign when you see regulars on such friendly terms with the staff at a restaurant. The crab rangoon was maybe a little light on crab, but still was a good way to start the meal. We went with the sesame chicken and chicken fried rice for the main course and they were flavorful, fresh, and hot, and for what you pay you truly get a heaping of food. It's enough to feed a family easily, but with just the two of us it got us leftovers for a couple of days. I'm hoping to make this a regular stop when I get a hankering for Chinese. read more

China Cottage is one of the few bright spots for Chinese food in the Katy area. Take advantage of their weekly lunch menu (available until 3pm) which also includes soup. Food is always served fresh and steaming hot. Love their fried rice as it is not bland-tasting like in other restaurants. Among our favorites are the General Tso's Chicken, Hunan Beef and Triple Ingredients Dish. Their Lo-Mein is actually pretty underrated and very good as well. Food portions on the lunch menu although generous are not enough to split with someone else. Jenny and the older lady (sorry I don't remember her name) have been our servers on most of our visits and are always very friendly. Looked this place up on my blackberry yelp app in search of restaurants close to me. Saw the two previous reviews and they definitely didnt lie. You can definitely miss this place lost in the middle of the mundane horror that is the Katy suburbs. Looks like your stereotypical Chinese restaurant with all the trinkets and normal Chinese decor (yep, stole this word from the previous review) inside. As for the lunch special: You get a soup - Egg Drop/Hot & Sour/Creamy Chicken Rice - Steamed or Fried and the Crab Cheese puffs (awesome) There wasent anything on the menu more than $6.50 but dont let the prices fool you. I ordered the Mala Chicken ($5.95) which the menu warned was worthy of a 3 spicy pepper caricature. Which it unfortunately did not live up to. It came with scallions, chopped jalapeno and mushrooms. The plate was huge and I'm definitely going home with an awesome dinner for tonight. Like the other reviews said, its definitely a hidden gem in Katy for those of us UN fortunate enough to work out here. One thing that I did find discouraging about this place, yet didnt deserve a drop in star was the sub par fortune cookies. We all know most of them are pretty crappy but we got one that was overly strange. It said "It is most enjoyable to talk to you". Now if you put your funny hat on it sounds like the fortune cookie is telling you it likes your conversation, and hopes to speak to you again. Nothing about my future business deals or relationships. We moved to Katy 3 years ago and just found out about this restaurant 3 months ago. This is not the typical americanized Chinese restaurant--although they sell the typical Kung Pao chicken. I'm always impressed every time by there food/ service etc it just gets better how's that even possible you might ask but it's the truth. I/we have never been let down yet. It's actually to the point we just know it's going to be amazing food. Remember what I said in my full review. If you eat inside ask for Jenny . She's Gr8! I'm sure the other waitresses are good but I love Jenny she pays attention to detail not only with food but on a personal level she noticed when I lost weight. The owner & Jenny even gave me advise on what to do when I had 3 pinched nerves in my back I did what they advised & it worked. They really do care. I should have waited to write the first review. After coming here a couple more times the food has been very inconsistent. On my second visit I had the Mongolian beef to go. Got it home only to discover I received Mongolian soup. It was swimming in sauce. Not a great meal. On my third and last visit, I ordered a lunch special. It came with 2 crab rangoon and choice of soup. I ordered the hot and sour soup, it was hot, fresh and tasted great. The soup has been the only item that has always been consistently good. For my entree I ordered Szechuan chicken. It wasn't really hot, only warm. Not much flavor, very disappointing. The crab rangoon were definitely old, room temperature with no crunch and very chew. My daughter always orders the sesame tofu, all three times it has been cooked differently. This last time, it had a very sticky sweet sauce. She didn't care for it at all. One star for the friendly staff and one star for the soup. If they could turn out a consistently good entree it would be a great place to go. Until then I'm going to have to pass. read more

Wow! I had the Mala Combination, it said it was super spicy, so I asked for Medium. It was not really spicy at all, so maybe the normal spice would be fine. But boy oh boy was it good. So simple and yet each of the flavors were unique and tasty. The service was good, the atmosphere was a bit drab, and the TV played the news all night, but it's a hole in the wall, so you take what you get. I love the food. And I've not had an even unpleasant visit. This broke it for me. Yelp indicated open for lunch until 4. Door sign indicated open all day. So I get there at 2. Waitress looks at her watch. I ask if there's a problem since I figured I have an hour. They turned off the air conditioning. We've tried some of the Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants in Katy Asian Town, but we always come back to China Cottage, since there's just something about their food that stands out among other Chinese restaurants/take-out. For the past 10 years or so, we always drove past China Cottage as we were driving on Mason Rd, but we never had the time to try their food, until earlier this year. I regret not trying their food sooner, as the Lo Mein is especially delicious and the beef is tender and cooked well. The food is always fresh and never fails to disappoint. China Cottage is definitely a hidden gem that everyone needs to try. :) read more
