We have been ordering on occasions from this location for years now. Our order of "Orange Chicken" came with a side of black hair. I called the restaurant and they refused to give me a refund on that particular plate. Mind you we had other food too. It grossed us out. Threw it all in the garbage. So, in a nutshell, I'm happy to know that in Houston, there are many other Chinese restaurants to choose from. NEVER, will we order from these inconsiderate nasty people. Please never order from China Cottage. I door dashed from China cottage yesterday 4/26/26. I have a very weak stomach, I was gagging and vomiting too much to talk about my experience yesterday. The thought about what I just experience makes me very nauseated. I was told about this place by a friend and ordered from here several times in the past. I always order the brown rice and general tso chicken. The food got to me still warm and ontime from DoorDash. Since the brown rice box and the meat container comes separately, I normally always mix the brown rice into my general tso meat container. I was eating the food normally and took a couple of bites. After a few bites I looked into my bowl and it look like something like a hair was stuck to 1 side of it, so I picked the meat piece up and flipped it to the other side. Attached to it was a stuck bug that could be a roach . It appears that the bug (roach) was cooked into the chicken! I'm so sick to my stomach still, the health department needs to be called. I don't think I can ever look at Chinese food the same ever again. I'm so disgusted and angry. My heath is involved and I don't play about my food or my health. This is the China Cottage on Westheimer Rd. Get a health inspector and do something about this location. This is unacceptable. DoorDash should also remove this place! I informed DoorDash what happened and also left a review on DoorDash that it doesn't show that it was posted. DoorDash is not serious and is not really doing anything about the situation other than refunding me. The food as a whole was okay. The chicken tasted similar to Timmy Chan. Same kind of batter, less crunchy, w Wingdings instead of whole wings. They were okay. The lo mien was reaaallly good, also really greasy, but good lol. I got it mixed, which I usually don't do because I don't like people's beef, but I actually enjoyed this dish a lot. The shrimp, although there were maybe 5 max in the dish, tasted like salt and pepper shrimp. The chicken was chicken and the beef was surprisingly very tender and juicy. I would go back for the lo mien if I was craving some. Now my Kung Pao wasn't as satisfying. It was filled w that chili pepper oil, which made it come off extremrly greasy. In my opinion, Panda Express has better Kung poa. Also, I paid extra for my rice to come fried and it was absolutely gross. The flavor wasn't your usual soy saucey, eggy, fried rice flavor. It's pretty standard to ask for filled soap containers...I hand to wait for the last drop or so if the soap to come out to wash my hands. In search for some good Chinese food for lunch, we landed ourselves at the China Cottage. I was glad that they had lunch specials for about $7.00 a plate. We came here around 1pm and there were a few customers in the restaurant. Our waitress came right away and told us to be seated anywhere and took our drink orders. She came back within a minute and asked for our food order. I went with a General Tso Chicken with steamed rice, which came with hot n sour soup and a vegetable role. My friend went with Sesame chicken with steamed rice and hot n sour soup and a vegetable role. We both really enjoyed our food. It was fresh n hot. The soup was bursting with flavor and probably one of the best hot n sour I've had. The chicken was cooked well with plenty of sauce and seasoning. Pretty ideal for a lunch plate. I usually opt for steamed dumplings also. I can see myself here as a repeat customer for a quick lunch bite. The one thing I don't like about fast food eateries is that they bring your tab/check while you are still dining. They do not wait for u to finish or ask for the tab when you're ready. I've been to China Cottage various times but today placed an order for delivery. I placed my order at 11:15am and wanted it delivered to my lunch meeting before 12. They delivered on time, the order was correct and the food was good. The lady that took my order had a strong accent and I thought she would mess up my order but she didnt. The person that delivered was nice and called me once he made it to the office building with my food. They took about 35 minutes to prepare and deliver the food, perfect timing. The lunch menu is affordable and they serve plenty of food. Everything on the lunch menu is good and ranges between 6.50 to 7.95. You get to choose a soup, comes with an egg roll and your choice of rice. For $7.00? That's a good price considering you might spend more at a McDonald's for "fake" food. I even came in before 12 to beat the lunch rush but the rush never came. I got pan fried dumpling, general tso's lunch special, and wonton soup. The soup was flavorless and I didn't even finish it. The general tso's lunch special was came with a bad egg roll filled with cabbage and fried rice that was bland. I am giving it 3 stars because the chicken and pan fried dumplings were enjoyable. It did have a lot of msg and left me extremely thirsty, but they tasted like I had expected them to. Overall the service was good. Since I was the only person in the place it was easy for me to get a much needed water refill and got my food pretty fast. read more

These guys deserve every great review they get. We order through Grubhub at least once or twice a month and the food is always great. Their delivery folks are really nice and the food is always hot and delicious. Triple delight is always great, and so is their hot and sour soup. Egg drop soup is good too. I always get the 6 pork egg rolls and eat them for leftovers. They aren't good reheated in the microwave but I put them on the gas grill for a couple of minutes and it's a great lunch. read more

I ordered sweet and sour chicken and the hubby orders sweet and sour pork. They don't offer any dinner specials so you'll have to pay extra for soup, egg roll and etc. We get home and I was seriously annoyed at what I saw in the bag or better yet lack of what I didn't see. There was NO silverware, NO napkins and the sweet and sour sauce for 2 entrees was combined in one container. If we order 2 entrees then each dinner should have its own sauce. I call her back and say why is there no silverware, napkins and why is the sauce in one container. She said: you can get your own napkin and silverware at home. You ask for and we give but cost extra. WHAT??? You're joking right. So then I remind her we have 2 dishes and one sauce and for that she said well I have you one big container, you share. Listen by now I'm thinking this lady is off her rocker. I tell her what if I'm going to work and there is no silverware or napkins and what if I'm ordering with a co-worker, we don't want to dip out of each other's sauce. My point is she didn't know who or what would be eating this and she took the cheapest route and was rude about everything. I told her I was going to recap this on YELP and she said she didn't care. Now both entrees were good. Definitely one of the better sweet and sours I've had. I'll go back and try other dishes and if they are good and she improves her attitude I will raise this place to 3 or 4 stars. Great neighborhood takeout/ delivery place! It has recently won over my favor for most preferred Chinese delivery! Prompt! They speak and understand English over the phone and the delivery person is always very nice! All of this makes a difference!! My selection has been limited so far but I'm sure we will have a chance to taste other dishes! You have to order the Fried rice! I really love the combo fried rice from here! Get it spicy! We have tried the fried chicken wings, spicy chicken, beef with jalapeños, chicken lo mein, and the egg rolls. The egg rolls are not great, but they are your typical Chinese egg rolls if you like that. China Cottage has a good weekday lunch special meal for less than $10 that is perfect for anyone working nearby but nothing else. This authentic Chinese-owned restaurant makes decent Americanized take-off Chinese food though a bit too salty, but I was disappointed that the fried rice used the long-grained rice instead of the short-grained rice that is traditionally used in Chinese cuisine so the fried rice tasted more like Mexican dirty rice than Chinese fried rice. As a Chinatown freak, I am much more picky with Chinese food, so perhaps you will not find too much fault with China Cottage if you are not too into the authenticity (My co-workers certainly enjoyed it). Like I said, this is a good place for your work lunch break, but it's definitely not somewhere you should go out of your way to dine especially because it is so close to Chinatown where you can get actual Chinese food. read more

We drove over to the restaurant, and immediately after stepping out of the car smelled a terrible stench outside of the restaurant - like bad seafood or seafood water that was emptied outside. We walked inside and the smell luckily went away. We were ordering from the counter and wanted to make sure the shrimp was fresh. We asked the waitress behind the counter and she started yelling at us. We could barely understand her but it was pretty clear she was not happy with us asking that question. Either way - we did not order the shrimp. I had beef and broccoli and my other coworker had the general tso's chicken lunch special. It was nice that for the lunch special they let you substitute the soup for an extra egg roll. However, if you want brown/fried rice it is an additional $2. My food was decent, but nothing great. BUG IN FOOD..Story time, looked at a few pics on yelp and decided I wanted to try this place because the fried rice looked to be fried dark on the pics (like I like) I ordered shrimp with broccoli (brown sauce iykyk) and fried rice which wasn't fried dark after all but I wasn't tripping because the shrimp with broccoli looked GREAT. Half way through eating I found a BUG(not even going to say what kind because I'm still a lil traumatized but use your imagination). I called them to let them know and I was put on hold to speak to 2 different people and never actually got an apology. I had to ask for a refund which was crazy to me because I AM VICTIM and an apology should've been the first thing out of anyone's mouth! Still sick thinking about it.
