This is the 2nd time this placed has disappointed me. We ordered the sesame chicken, which had no chicken inside of it, it should had been called sesame dough; the rice was okay, more smoochy, and i should have known better to go again, but i thought give em a try, maybe they were just having a bad day.. this really isn't a good take out place for chinese food, I'm sorry. read more

This place was my first restaurant to try in the city of Winston-Salem, and it was chosen mostly because of a craving for Chinese food, and also because it happened to be nearby. I wanted noodles originally, but when I tried ordering Chow Mein, the cashier told me that it wasn't the type of Chow Mein that I was thinking of. As soon as he said that, I thought, ohhhhh no, here we go again with the so-called "Chow Mein!" I have learned that Chow Mein refers to crispy Egg Noodle Chips down in the South. I'm glad I was warned about this prior to ordering, because I would definitely have said something about my meal! Cashier was Asian. I am Asian. So there was a mutual understanding. However, you don't have to be Asian to know that when you Google "Chow Mein," the first page of results will show you that Chow Mein refers to crispy noodles, but you will see that they do NOT look like noodle chips! After having all these thoughts run through my mind and refusing to give up on having some decent Chinese food in NC, I switched my choice to Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, under the Special Combination Plates, which are served with Pork Fried Rice (Char siu, to be exact) and an Egg Roll for $6.99. I was very thankful to have been warned by the cashier of what would have been a very poor decision. I was very pleased with my final decision, particularly because of the jumbo sized shrimp. It came with approx 6 pieces of shrimp. It mixes very well with the Fried Rice. The Egg Roll is thick in size, but I didn't care much for it. I also tried a bit of the BBQ Spare Ribs, also off of the Special Combo Plates menu. Comes with 4 ribs, and it was delicious. read more

As soon as I walked up to the door I knew I had probably made a mistake. There were 7000 dirty fingerprints on the front door. The restaurant was steaming hot. The food was another story. The rice tasted old, but I think they cut up some fresh onions to try to fool me. The chicken was strange. Some pieces were undercooked, others were overcooked and hard. My daughter wanted a soft drink. The mountain dew came in a can, but she said it tasted weird. Seriously, how do you mess up a canned soda. This place used to be good but has changed ownership and has gone downhill. The General Tso chicken is all breading and sauce and almost no meat. Don't dare order anything fried for at least 30 minutes after they open because they don't turn the fryer on a second before they open and anything order fried will be disgustingly greasy. The past few times I've ordered egg rolls they tasted like they were made yesterday. The list goes on. I wish they would get their act together. I used to come here a lot. I won't waste my money. I ordered the shrimp mai fu and crab rangoon. Should've been called tasteless mai fun veggies with 6 tiny shrimp filled to the brim with noodles, hard to find those tiny shrimps, overcooked rangoon. Mind you, NO ONE was in there. Realy pathetic for a place that is convenient for me but has soooo much competition in Winston-Salem. I'll take my $$ someplace else from now on. Edit, my bad, I found 2 more baby shrimps! This is my first and last order from China Chef. My entire order was wrong and less expensive food than I ordered. I call the restaurant to see if they would send the correct meal and told them I had the email receipt I could send them to show what I ordered, rather than try to resolve the issue the worker hung up on me! These guys should not be in business! Whatever happened to customer service, especially when you mess up the customers order? Don't order from this restaurant! I never will again. read more

I'm only leaving a review to remind myself NOT to return here in the future. I got two meals: one for dinner and one for the following lunch. I finished the dinner, and it tasted pretty good (3.5/5). It made me feel absolutely terrible - all night and even at this moment, the following morning. I just threw away the second meal; I consider it paying $10 to not feel sick again. Don't let the outside of this place deceive you. Some of the best chinese take out I've had. Prices are pretty decent for the portion size. I use General Tso's chicken as my benchmark for places like this and their's is excellent. It is crispy, the sauce isn't too sweet and the portion is huge. For a little over 7 bucks you get a the Tso, fried rice and a really god egg roll.Staff is friendly and service is fast. There seemed to be a lot of people ordering the chicken wings and fried rice plate and it looked really good. 4 big wings and a big plate of fried rice for $5.25 might explain its popularity, especially considering the king's ransom they charge at the wing place around the corner from this place (see previous review). I'll definitely try that since I am down here quite a bit. I realize there are purist, snobs out there that will turn their noses up at Americanized Chinese food and have a good belly laugh about my General Tso benchmark...I don't really care because they are missing out and places like China Chef will continue to be hidden gems wedged between Dollar General and Food Lion. read more

Omg I tried this place twice. The first time I had shrimp and broccoli the second house lo mein both times the shrimp was gross and the noodles were soggy I couldn't even it it. This food is gross Winston Salem needs to do better food wise smh read more

Love the boneless spare rib tips. Food is always cooked to perfection. The wait is usually never long depending how many ordered they have.

Overall a good experience. The fried rice is nothing to write Yelp about. Some pieces of the rice are crunchy. If you like that type of rice have at it. However, the rest of the food is very satisfying. The food order taker likes to scream so it makes for a comedic yet enjoyable time. If you're ever there order the honey chicken wings. Good to go. Went into this restaurant a few weeks ago and the tall man working behind the counter was very rude to the customer in front of me. I let it go. I went in the other day to pick up food and he did it to me. There was a gentleman in front of me and the worker wanted me to come up and get my food when there was not enough space. I was trying to give him 6 feet and he kept yelling at me to get my food. When I did get my food I told him I have seen him do this before and I will not be back. Good prices . Place doesn't look like much stuck in the shopping center. Good tasting food...order fried fish , vegetable stir fried rice and egg drop soup. Last time got General Tao's chicken, mixed vegetables and chicken with snow pea pods. Which was cooked just right not chewy. Now vegetarians watch your order of vegetables, chicken instead of shrimp. Very friendly staff! The boneless spare ribs, fried rice, and tea was very good! The sauce on the ribs was a little salty but the sweetness of the tea balanced it out. The onion fried rice (made upon request) was perfect! I look forward to trying more dishes! read more

Nasty. Horrible. Frighteningly dirty. Part of the experience was comical, like when there were me and one couple in the restaurant and someone came out of the kitchen with 2 plates nearly having a breakdown while trying to figure out who to serve them to! Steamed wontons had the thickest wrapping on them you can imagine. Hot and Sour Soup was neither hot nor sour, completely tasteless. Kung Pao chicken had no red peppers and again, no flavor at all. We just moved to this side of town from the Lewisville/Pfafftown area and I'm longing for good Chinese food. Unfortunately, this is obviously not it. read more

This is the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever been to and I eat Chinese food often. First of all, the portions are the smallest of any Chinese food establishment like it within 20 miles. Typically a dinner combo at any Chinese restaurant comes in a plastic container or box where they put your main food then one little box with your rice. Not there. They put your rice and main meal in the plastic container so you get a fraction of the food you get at most Chinese restaurants. I ordered shrimp and broccoli with white rice dinner combo. My shrimp and broccoli was in the same container as my rice and there was only three shrimp. Typically, at other places, I get twice the food for the same price. My husband's meal was the same, a very small portion. If they want to give less they should charge less. My three shrimp were mushy. The taste was not bad though, pretty average. I had high hopes for this place because I order Chinese food a lot but it looks like I will stick to the place I go by the other Food Lion a little bit further up 150 towards Lexington, it's much better. read more
