We relocated to Sumter from Southern California and have had a challenge finding decent fried rice (or any good Chinese food). Our search is over. Not only is China Chef conveniently location in the same shopping center as my nail salon, but also near my preferred grocery store. The pork fried rice that comes with any combination plate is super tasty, as well as the egg roll included! We ordered the boneless spare ribs, and orange beef, and crab ragroons wontons. Great portion size, worth the $! The boneless spare ribs were fresh and yummy along side their delicious pork fried rice. The orange beef was just as we desired. It has just a bit of a kick, full of flavor, and crispy (as it should be). Our food was ready in the time advised to pick up and hot. Convenient apply pay. We are giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the crab ragroon were tasty but could use more cream cheese filling. WE WILL BE BACK EVERY TIME WE CRAVE CHINESE CUISINE. read more

I got the hot and spicy chicken combination and my girlfriend got the sesame chicken combination. My plate was not spicy as much as I was expecting. The vegetables in the food were not cooked, I like my vegetables cooked but that's just me I'm not down grading the place for that. But overall my plate was very enjoyable. The sesame chicken was amazing, we could both eat it until we get sick. We both could not finish our plates there was so much food and I like that, I don't like leaving restaurants still very hungry. Being here in Sumter, it's very, very difficult to find a decent Chinese restaurant. Being from California, my wife and I are very picky when it comes to selection. We've been very disappointed with what we found around here till I saw China Chef and its 4 star review. We decided to check it out... It's more like a fast food/a la carte type of place. It's in a nice plaza right next to a Little Caesar's Pizza and a Bi-Lo. Looking at the menu, there is a nice lunch special for around $6.50. We ended up getting the Seafood Delight, some dish (name escapes me) that has vegetables, meat, shrimp and chicken and a combination Lo-Mein for my daughter. Portions are rather huge and we didn't finish any of our dishes. Food wasn't too saucy, salty or void of meats/seafood. Portions are cooked on the spot and you can check out the chefs in the back preparing your food. All in all, this is one of the better a la carte Chinese restaurants in town. If you don't want to venture out to Columbia or Charlotte, then this is the place. Hours are great too...they open till 1100pm Sun-Thurs, 1130pm on Friday and Saturday. Very small place, designed for carry out. You can call in an order and by the time you show up it's ready. I live only two miles from his store and have never had to wait on my food by the time I got there. Friendly cashier, never been moody always respectful. Food is fresh and hot, with very good portion sizes. I have never been able to eat all the food in one night. Always had left overs for the next day. To say I love China Chef might be an understatement!!! I love Chinese food especially Mo Shu Pork. I tried a few other local Chinese food locations in Sumter, and was disappointed because the Mo Shu Pork did not taste quite right. A coworker recommended this location to me, and I have found my go to Chinese food restaurant. Everything my husband and I have tried from this restaurant has been delicious. My go to entrees are Mo Shu Pork and Shrimp Fried rice. If you are looking for a plate option they have that has well! This is a very small restaurant with only 4 tables, so my suggestion is to order it to go! The only thing that would make this restaurant better is if they did delivery, but you can call ahead! :) read more

I am super duper picky about Chinese food. To the point that I don't even usually bother to eat out for Chinese. But OMG I'm glad I caved to my boyfriend's craving. We're new in town and this place had good reviews. EXCELLENT food. We ordered several things our first time. Loved it so much, we had to order again the next night. (And this was after having it for dinner the night before and then lunch that day lol). My favorite is the Singapore Mei Fun. And the crab rangoons are to die for. This is the exact kind of take out Chinese place I was looking for while in town. A quick call in and ten minutes later I was leaving with a bag of greasy delicious American Chinese food. With out a doubt the egg rolls were my favorite part, I ordered one pork and one shrimp to hold me over till I got back to my hotel. The shrimp one bye it's self gets an easy 4-5 stars. Not too greasy but crispy with a good filling of cabbage and shrimp. However still good, the pork egg roll was VERY greasy. So much so that I took a bite and a large grease pocket exploded on to my lap. For my meal I ordered Mongolian beef, this is where it starts to go down hill. I know it is hard to get this meal right but this one wasn't very close. The flavor of the actual meat was quite nice but there was so much sauce in the dish that it was basically soup. The meat was tender but sometimes chewy and had no sides. A mass of onions and green onions were the only other thing in there. This place is very close to the house. I can call in an order and by the time I get there, it's ready to go. I usually get the Spicy Peking Beef and a couple of pork egg rolls. I would hands down say this is the best Chinese place in town. Fresh tasting, clean, fast and not overpriced. If you want to start small to test, go ahead and try the fried rice; let this be the determinant. Hubby loves the ribs! I even tried one of the "healthy" plates which is all steamed and without oil and the shrimp (shrimp and broccoli) was fresh as heck, not rubbery and broccoli was nice and crunchy. Eureka! We have tried many places around our humble abode in Sumter, but so far this has provided the best tasting Chinese (American) food yet. We ordered your average Beef & Broccoli and General Tso's combinations. Both main dishes were properly sauced and not overfried. The combinations came with ham fried rice and an egg roll. The rice is that "good good," where they use the ham spare rib and make it really eggy with lots of veggies. The egg roll had quite a sizeable girth in terms of egg rolls, and wasn't dried out, like most. We also got small egg drop and hot-sour soups. My husband admired his "large chunks of tofu" in his hot and sour, but apparently, that's how he prefers it. My egg drop was delish. It was your usual, but done correctly. Some of the other places in Sumter like to put the whole salt lick in the pot or make it a strange hue of yellow-orange, but not China Chef. Needless to say, we've found our spot for typical, yet delicious Chinese American food. Boom. read more

Went for the first time tonight and it was very good! I ordered Bourbon Chicken with lo mein and wonton soup. Overall, I was very impressed. The menu is quite large and everything you would expect from a chinese food take out joint. They have chicken on a stick that I am excited to try!! Best Chinese restaurant in Sumter! And Columbia actually. I've never had a bad dish. My MIL loves their General Tso's chicken. My favorite is the Four Seasons. I also love their Chicken Lo Mein and Shrimp Egg Foo Young. Food is always freshly prepared and ready when I get there. They give you a lot for the price. Most of their regular dishes can be split between 2 people. It is family owned and you can tell they take pride in their work. They don't deliver but their food is worth the drive. I was very happy with my order. My boyfriend and I each got a dinner special, I had Kung Po Chicken with Fried Rice and he got Pork Lo Mein with Pork Fried Rice and 2 Egg Rolls. We got a side order of Crab Rangoon and Wonton Soup. When I placed my order, I watched them cook it. The Kung Po Chicken was not overwhelmingly spicy, and the vegetables were so fresh, I loved it. Everything was deliciously fresh, tasty and the portions were huge. We have enough food left over for lunch tomorrow. All of this for under $21.00. I will be back and I will tell all of my friends. I used to order takeout from here occasionally a few years ago and somehow forgot about the place. Probably because it's not on my usual route. My mistake! Stopped in on a whim this week and ordered the Mu Shu Pork and hot and sour soup. Phoned in a pick up order a few days later just for the hot and sour soup. Service was fast and friendly both times and food was excellent! So was the wider variety of food I ate several years ago. I just ordered from China Chef again last night and it was not as good as I expected, but I believe it's because of the newbie cashier. At first she gave me incorrect change (over ten dollars short) which almost seemed intentional, but innocent until found guilty and I will not hold it against her. After making my To-Go order, I left for Bi-Lo and returned about 10 minutes later to pick it up. When I got home I noticed that I was missing part of my order. I ordered, and paid for, two orders of the crab rangoons but only received one. The hot and sour soup was just sour and quite disgusting and the moo goo gai pan, which I had asked to be spicy, was not spicy at all. Again I am pretty sure the cashier made a mistake while making my order because the last time I went there everything was fine. I will give them one more chance, but I am a little disappointed and I will not be expecting much. read more
