The biggest compliment I can give this place is that it is absolutely efficient. With this being a…read moreregional airport, it is a bit small which could lend to the efficiency of the facility. Let's do a quick overview of the airport. With it being small, checking in is swift. You only seem to have two airlines that fly in and out of here so that makes it easy to find where you need to go. This being a small airport everything is quite laid back. You don't feel hassled or rushed when you go through check in and security. TSA checkpoint here was really simple. Even though they have TSA Precheck, it is basically void here as there never really seems to be a hold up in lines. Literally I walked up, plopped my stuff on the belt, walked through and was on the terminal side. Really nothing separating the two lines, just kind of walk up, go through. Terminal side, small, again, I hate to redundant, but everything here feels like you might be in a mock up of an airport, but it is a fully functional airport. There are only six gates, so there is no mistake with figuring out where you have to be. The good thing with this is that it is again efficient with boarding the plane. Let's go back to the entrance side. All bags come to one claim area. So if your flight happens to land around the same time as another, all bags will be mixed together. That is if your bag arrives with you. See, with it being a regional airport, it equals smaller planes. This has nothing to do with the airport, but the airlines may bump your luggage on you. This actually happened to my colleague. We arrived around 11 in the morning, but her luggage wasn't showing up until 6 that evening. Without any way for it to be delivered, she had to make her way back to the airport to get her luggage. When in town for work, that's not always the best situation. Honestly, the baggage claim was probably the most fun and easy spot here. Grab your bag and head outside to get transportation to where you need to go. Speaking of transportation, wait a bit when trying to get an Uber. You'll end up missing the surge pricing. Back to the terminal side. With it being a small airport, there wasn't much in offerings for food/shopping. At the time I was there, there was only one eatery open and if I remember correctly, one shop open for snacks/gifts. Which was odd, there was a kiosk type situation going on for Dunkin' but besides the signs, nothing was offered. What appeared to be other storefronts that could be used, were in fact storage. How do you know? What is stored is up against the frosted glass and you can see it from the seating area. I didn't step foot towards the eatery as it was overcrowded, I did go into the store, much simpler and easier to navigate. The seating area again. What I liked about this is that it was abundant. Especially since not all gates are in use, so if you feel the need to spread out, you are more than welcome to go to another gate area. I absolutely loved the tables here. Shared space with pop up outlets for regular plugs and USB. Bathrooms were clean and in working condition. I was lucky the day I was flying out. It was the week that a storm was rolling across the country. I think I was on one of the only flights out of MGM that day. All other flights after a certain point out of here, were cancelled. Lots of people ended up being stuck, diverted, or driving to a nearby airport.

This small airport has friendly staff. The security checkpoint was easy to navigate through. I did…read morenot experience any trouble with renting a car. I enjoyed the rental car. The airport was clean, and I enjoyed eating a breakfast sandwich from one of the shops. Food options are scarce, and there are few outlets available for charging electronics.

On the plus side, it is not overly crowded and it is nice that they have a Chick fil A in the terminal. That gives you at least one solid option to grab something to eat. On the downside, there are not a lot of food or shopping options overall. The rental car area and signage could also be clearer. It was a little confusing figuring out exactly where to go and how to navigate that part of the airport. In my mind this is about a three and a half star experience. On here I will round it up to 4 stars because it is functional and not chaotic, but there is definitely room for improvement.

That said, there are several areas where the airport falls short: * Limited Food Options: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, plan ahead. The food options are very limited, and finding something safe to eat can be difficult. I highly recommend packing your own snacks or meals. * Confusing Rental Car Signage: The rental car signage is not clear, especially for companies located off-site or away from the main counters. If you're using one of those services, expect a little confusion and allow extra time. * Inconsistent Security Experience: Security has been extremely hit or miss. On my previous trip, it took about two minutes - quick, efficient, and staffed by friendly agents. Today was the complete opposite. I especially want to highlight an issue that disproportionately affects travelers of color. I recommend that Brown travelers (even with TSA PreCheck) plan extra time for what many of us know as the "brown person tax." I witnessed an elderly Indian couple ahead of me have their bags pulled, and then mine was pulled as well. Typically, when TSA pulls a bag for screening, agents explain what they're checking, invite you to stand next to them, show you the item on the screen, and then ask clarifying questions. That has been my experience at nearly every other airport. At Birmingham, the agent did none of that, for them or for me. Instead, she spoke to us in a rude tone, did not follow the usual protocol, refused to answer or ask questions, and snapped at me when I tried to help identify what might have triggered the screening. When she was done, she shoved my items back into my bag, zipped it sloppily, and tossed it onto the counter without a word. When I told her to have a lovely day, she stomped away. The only place I've been treated more rudely was at the Melbourne Airport in Australia, where it was painfully obvious that every brown passenger was being singled out. * Overall Impression: Based on these experiences, I would honestly rather fly into Atlanta and drive the two hours the next time I need to be in Birmingham. The convenience of a small airport is overshadowed by the lack of amenities, unclear information, and inconsistent, sometimes disrespectful, treatment by security.

His professionalism and customer service is like nothing I've experienced with ANY other business in a VERY long time. It is truly "rare" these days. Our guests all raved about how kind the drivers were! Allison Whitfield was one of the drivers and I don't know the name of the others (we had several buses). ALL were awesome! One man went above and beyond helping my best friend's husband who has had a stroke. Driving up to meet him, helping him off and on the bus...just going out of his way to help. Thank you Bob for everything!! Blessings!

REVIEW OF RARE TRANSPORTATION Event dates APRIL 26-28, 2019…read more It has seemed prudent to wait awhile before posting a review of my experience with Rare Transportation. The first draft was admittedly something of a rant; now that I have heard comments from our visitors and have had time to allow the entire episode to settle, I am ready to post. I selected Rare Transportation for our needs because it appeared to have the largest fleet of buses, and because other groups seem to have been quite pleased with Rare Transportation. In the beginning I felt that Peyton understood our needs and wanted to see that those needs were met. By the time the event happened, it was clear that was not the case. It is with regret that I cannot recommend it. There is a laundry list of complaints about the performance of the drivers and managers. Here I will mention only the most egregious one: no bus came to Embassy Suites Saturday morning to take people to the Botanical Gardens, in spite of a signed contact which included that responsibility. Peyton got mad at me because I pointed out various deviations from the agreed plans for Friday, and he vented his anger by cancelling the Saturday morning shuttle, with no notice to me of cancellation. That is simply not acceptable or professional. If anyone wants specifics on other problems, you may contact me. I can point out a number of details which bear watching, though there is no guarantee that they would be handled properly. It gives me no pleasure to post a negative review of any business. The event was a time to showcase Birmingham at its best; Rare Transportation's performance was an embarrassment. Alleen Cater alleenc@bellsouth.net 205-862-7179
