So delicious! Everything was so wonderful. We ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer, the egg roll appetizer, sweet and sour pork, yellow curry with chicken, chicken fried steak and eggs (with spring toast and hash browns), and the special which was soba noodles with wonderful sauce and chicken and veggies. Everything was FABULOUS! Our server was helpful and attentive and I can't say enough about the deviousness of ALL the food. They also sell homemade pastries (in fact, everything is homemade) and bread. The dining room is lovely but it was VERY WARM in there so we ate outside on the patio. The Chilkat Restaurant and Bakery in Haines, Alaska, was a welcome and unexpected surprise. Whenever I'm on a temporary work assignment in "Bush" (small town) Alaska, I tend to lower my expectations for restaurants and lodging. The restaurant and bakery is smallish in size to match its small town setting. Run by a friendly and hard-working Thai lady, we felt welcome and enjoyed many a good meal there. I enjoyed the green curry with rice and requested extra spice. It was delicious and made my face sweat after a long, cold day in the rain. Just what I needed! The Kung Pao Chicken was excellent as well. For those not preferring the Thai offerings, there's a menu with American dishes for those wanting more standard offerings. And lastly, the bakery offered many tasty pastries, donuts, and sweet desserts for the road. Being the off-season, and being consequently short staffed, we did not mind the somewhat slower service. Yesterday, after riding the 6:15 AM ferry from Skagway, we stopped at the Chilkat Bakery and Restaurant for breakfast. Great breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant/bakery. It's a one stop-shop for Thai, Mexican and hearty American basics. My family and I had a feast here with delicious Thai food that was surprisingly quite good as we thought Thai ingredients would not be available in this remote region. Don't expect your fresh papaya salad here as this is Alaska. But, the curries and soups hit the spot after a long hike in the cold. Their blue berry muffins were filled with a dozen blue berries. Loved it. Nothing spectacular here, but nothing bad either. I bet if this business was located in a city with easy access to all the supplies they need, there would be mile-long lines. Their logo out front is litterally Proudly "serving thai food". With the serving thai food actually quoted, to "show emphasis"....service was sh!t, had to get our own cutlery from the service counter because it was not provided. Food was nearly inedible, left it sitting. I feel like this place should be featured on that kitchen nightmares show and what's his name Ramsey shows up and yells and screams at the staff but they just cry and run away. Stay away. read more

Yummy rhubarb fritters and tiger bars, especially slightly warmed. Rhubarb fritters are not as overwhelmingly sweet as the apple ones I've had elsewhere so it was a perfect blend of crunchy sweet with tart rhubarb tang! The tiger bars are "striped" maple and chocolate bars which make for a pleasing blend when you can't decide between maple and chocolate! read more

Came here every morning while I was in town. A very comfortable environment, great coffee, and those treats in the window display are just too tempting. I didn't dare touch any though. I did have their sourdough bread and veggie omelet. If the rest of their food matches what I experienced with my breakfast, I'd recommend the place to any one. At least anyone with a little cash in their pocket. My conservative meal - just a simple menu item with coffee amounted to $20 with the tip included. If your body can handle it to save the wad in your pocket maybe just go for a sweet treat. Personally, the e'clairs and rhubarb fritter caught my eye! Wonderful place to stay in Haines! The owner/operator (Miki) is the absolute sweetest host. She obviously went out of her way to make the room warm and inviting to us personally. The place is also within walking distance of almost everything you could possibly want to see in downtown Haines. There are only a couple of spots on the far side of town you might want a car for. Also, the food at the bakery is worth visiting for by itself. The Tom Kha soup is world-class. The cinnamon rolls are the number 1 cinnamon roll I have had in my life. Well, it is expensive but every restaurant in town is. The inside reminds me of a cozy coffee shop/bakery with a fireplace and amazing fresh baked donuts. If you are going to sit down and get something off the menu I would recommend something off the Thai menu. The owner is straight from Bangkok and the Curry dish I got was some of the best Thai food Ive ever tried. The staff was welcoming and friendly and the restaurant was clean and inviting. We came in for breakfast about 9:20AM on Thursday morning July 10, 2014. It took right at 30 minutes for our food to come. We were just about to walk out when it came. My husband had an omelet and said it was pretty good. I had biscuits and sausage gravy. I was hoping for homemade biscuit but it tasted more like it came from a can. The business was busy but most all the tables already had their food except for one and they were served just a few minutes before we were. If I could give a zero, I would. Overpriced, poor service - companion finished poached egg breakfast while I still waited for server to bring me croissant. Server appeared to be over medicated or in need of counselling. Owner's response to my polite complaint was to not charge us for the coffee that we never received - and since the cappucino's we saw on other tables looked like instant machine made, it's just as well. We paid for the food that we ate, and will not return. There are so many good places to eat in Haines, with competent and sane staff. Do not waste your time or money just because the pretty flowers outside make this seem like a good place to eat. read more

Given the geographic location of the town of Haines (accessible only by either the Alaska Marine ferry or the Haines highway) and its short growing season, we did not expect to get much fresh produce while staying here. In the end, we ended up eating out more often than usual because it would almost cost more if not as expensive to get produce at the grocery store for our meals. While searching for an outdoor supply store, we saw a sign for Chilkat Restaurant and Bakery and found out that on certain nights in the summer, they also serve Thai food. So one night, we gave it a try with a slight trepidation, not knowing what could come out of it. The restaurant part looks like one of those older chain restaurants that have been there for a long time. You can order both american and thai food from the menu. We ordered Penang Curry and Ginger Vegetables. The Penang Curry was very different than ones I've had before. It was spiced differently, yet in a good way and tasted reminiscent of Indonesian dish, the Rendang (beef stew in coconut sauce). One of the best I've had. When I asked the owner/server about it, she said that it was the same way her mom had made it back in Bangkok. Probably the second best thai food that I've had after Pato in Flagstaff, AZ. read more
