Went to this Chili's last night and the staff here stole my friend's cell phone. We got up from our table after an extremely mediocre dinner, walked for about 15 seconds before my friend realized she had left her phone on the table and we turned back to find the phone missing. The manager, John, was extremely unhelpful and once we complained he said there was nothing he could do and hid in the kitchen waiting for us to leave. We have no doubt it was the staff here b/c the table was immediately bussed and there were no diners near our table. The manager was rude and condescending to us 3 women. Avoid this place unless you'd like to eat crappy food and get robbed. read more

Our group of 6 headed to chilis on a Thursday evening around 9pm, as most other local restaurants were closed. The margaritas were really sweet and didn't seem to contain much tequila. The soup "bowl" (entree) portion was unexpectedly small. The greens in the Caesar salad were wilted and overdressed. The salmon and broccoli was tasty and the portion was adequate. Both kids had chicken strips and said they were "fine." The service was slow (since it was late it seemed they'd dropped to a single server too early) and some of the servers were socializing with someone who appeared to be an off-the-clock employee who, after experiencing multiple episodes of loud coughing in the dining area, said, "At least I'm not working right now." This was our only disappointing meal in Carlsbad, unfortunately. I'd recommend trying elsewhere if anyone else is still open when you need food. read more

Visiting Carlsbad and staying at the Hampton Inn. Went in tonight at 4:30pm and told wait was 30-45 minutes. Empty tables everywhere. Asked if we could sit in the bar and told, oh no! We only have three cooks so we can't seat you. Waited almost 30 minutes and a man walks in and goes past the hostess and sits at the bar. When this was pointed out to the 2-3 ladies that constantly hung out at the hostess stand, they acted like so ‍. Normally we love trying locally-owned places when we road trip, but after a long day of driving and then arriving to find the hotel we booked was filthy and falling apart, we just wanted to collapse at a familiar place and have a margarita. We figured you can't go wrong with a Chili's, right? False. We were the only ones in the lobby and couldn't get the hostess to acknowledge our existence. It got to be so comical that my husband and I eventually exchanged a baffled, amused glance and started a timer to see how long it would take before she greeted us. We stood there 3+ minutes, no more than a foot from the woman, before she finally looked up (from doing nothing, as far as we could tell) to grunt, "how many?". Our server was sweet, if a bit clueless, but overall no issues there. The food, while quick and hot, was wrong to a comical degree. Do yourself a favor and skip this Chili's. Worst experience ever at a Chili's - and we've been to quite a few. We were a group of 10, arriving at the restaurant around 8:40pm on a Sunday night. The hostess looked very uninterested and told us the wait was going to be 1 hour even though we told her we could take any seating arrangement over multiple tables if that helped. As we raised a concern over the long wait, we pointed out a long table/booth that could fit 10 people, which she then proceeded to sit us at. Not a single friendly smile or comment - clearly not somebody I would ever want to have as a hostess. Our waiter Andrew was seemingly new at his job - no complaints there really - we all have to learn at something new. We definitely got the impression that something was off in the kitchen. Our meals trickled out over the course of about 10 to 15 minutes - I was done with my meal by the time some of the others got theirs. 5 of the 10 meals had some issue - chicken instead of shrimp, steak well done instead of medium rare, etc. One of the sides (broccoli) for one of the meals never came. Our waiter Andrew did go above and beyond though to try and get everything corrected - he really cared. At around 9:42pm, we wanted to order another beer so we asked one of the waitresses - she bluntly said "we had last call 2 minutes ago" and went on to ask some people at another table if they wanted anything else - they ordered a couple of beers which suddenly was no longer an issue as they got theirs in no time. I ended up calling the manager to express my dissatisfaction with the service and the way we were being treated - he did not appear very interested either and uttered some apology and said that he would discuss our issues with the staff. Well I've come to find out since being in Carlsbad for a short period all service has been pretty much crappy hopeless and frustrating to say the least at five restaurants so far. And unfortunately Chili's falls into this category. Seated quickly and then the nightmare began. I used to be a waiter myself so I know a little about the business. No one greeted us for at least 3/4 minutes but a server did pass by and stated she would be right with us. Shortly there after another waitress came by and attended to us. After that it all went downhill very rapidly. We are members of the chili rewards program which means that we should be getting chips and salsa at every visit. However that was not the case since we logged into that little computer on the table and we had no rewards available. The waitress stated she would still give us the chips and salsa. We ordered from the two for $25 menu. Which means the chips and guacamole was included the pasta and shrimp as well as the bacon burger. It took at least 35 to 40 minutes to receive the food. When received the hamburger had no bacon on it the pasta shrimp was semi-warm and we never got refill of salsa which the waitress said she would get but completely forgot. Refills were nonexistent. She visited one time and never came back. I told another waitress that I had no bacon, she offered to get bacon but I stated I did not want to wait another 30 minutes to reply I chuckle and I can't blame you. We never saw our original waitress again. No one was attending to us. When we finally received the bill via the small order machine on the table it was the wrong bill. We were charged incorrectly. We did not want to wait for service since we did not intend to spend Christmas there. I disputed the charge with my credit card company. So if you're visiting Carlsbad anytime soon hang onto your shorts and get ready for some really crappy service in most places. Best o luck to you!! Almost forgot, when I received the burger it was so well overdone it had little black crispy marks all around the edges. And super dry!!! Waitress never asked how I wanted my hamburger. Our service was pretty good except at the end where the server refilled all of our drinks and passed them out to the wrong people , basically I didn't know who's straw I was drinking from anymore . Basically other than chips and Salsa the food sucked , meat tasted old and rubbery. Chicken crispers were soggy. Could not pull the ribs apart because they haven't been cooked long enough . I ordered two appetizers and a salad . They sent me an email at 6:20pm telling me it would be ready at 7:15. At 7:35pm I was told that everything is ready except the nachos. After numerous requests to talk to the manager he finally brought the food to me at 8:00pm. Even when the manager brought it to me it was not complete. The one hot appetizer that I was told was ready at 7:35 was now cold. This is the worst customer service I have ever seen for a restaurant chain. Very poor performance. I really feel like is shouldn't have to rate a Chili's, being that it's a national chain that should have standards, but this location's standards are so low that it warrants a review. I'm also usually a very good tipper, often in the 18-20% range. This was so terrible I was a 0% tipper. Here is the saga of how our waitress lost out on her tip. Our party of 2 was seated pretty quickly (although they did have to clean one of the half-a-dozen dirty, empty tables to do so) and the place was only semi-busy. Not crazy or anything, but not empty either. After 10 minutes of no waitress we asked the hostess where she was. It still took her 5 more minutes to arrive... with excuses. Minus 5%. We both ordered iced tea, the queso appetizer, and I ordered the crispy-style chicken crispers (I remember back when there was one type: crispy... but that's another story.) with honey mustard dipping sauce and subbed sweet potato fries instead of the regular fries and asked for no corn. She asked if I wanted the sweet potato fries instead of the corn also and I said no, just one substitution. (It's a $0.50 up-charge for them and I knew I wasn't hungry enough for twice the fries.) Hubby got the crispers honey-chipotle style, the corn, and subbed in a side salad with ranch dressing. It took about 5 minutes for our iced tea to arrive and another 5 minutes for the queso to arrive. Since those arrived in an almost timely fashion I ordered the sparkling pomegranate margarita and DH ordered the Long Island iced tea. They also arrived in a relatively timely fashion (about 5 minutes later) and were delicious. She said our food was almost ready and would be out soon. Things were looking up: no tip deduction. Then 15 minutes went by. Minus 5%. After 10 more minutes went by (total visit at this time: about 55 minutes) we flagged her down to ask where our food was. She made some excuse about the sweet potato fries delaying things (hah!) and promised things would be out soon. She asked if we wanted any of our drinks refilled and we said no but I asked for water. Then 15 minutes went by. No water. Minus 5%. (She's basically at a maximum 5% here.) Our food finally arrived!! She couldn't remember (subtext: didn't put it in with the order) which dipping sauce I had wanted and brought the honey mustard that I wanted and the honey-chipotle as well. The food was all correct and our chicken crispers were good, but the sweet potato fries were inconsistently cooked. Some were just right and some were under-done. I gave up on getting my water. Minus 5%. Upon seeing the bill, we were charged for double sweet potato fries. Grrr. I would've contested that, but we really just wanted to get out of there, as we'd been there for 90 minutes by then. So they have these great new pay-at-the-table kiosks that give you a survey as soon as you pay. We liked that. read more

I can't remember that last time I ate at a Chili's before this, so I can't really compare it to another Chili's. I can say this: It was located practically in the parking lot of The Hampton Inn that we were staying at and given all the road construction in Carlsbad at the time, we decided to just go here. It's a chain restaurant, so weren't expecting anything phenomenal, but we were expecting basic service and food quality. We got there and apparently Chili's is the happening place to be in this town. I have no idea why, unless all the other eateries are horrible. The hostess was probably late teens/ early twenties and she had her friend just hanging out laying down on the seating in the waiting area. We were told that we could take any of the tables in the bar area on a first come first serve basis, so they directed us that way when one became available. Fine, no problem. I've eaten in plenty of bars in my time. Except that this table was filthy and there had been some sort of a major spill under the table. They expected us to sit there in that state. I nearly had to pitch a fit to get someone to clean it. I ordered the potato soup and a side salad. The soup must have been sitting out or something, because there was nothing soupy about it. The cheese had crusted on the potatoes and when I put my spoon in it I could practically lift the entire contents of the bowl at one time. We also ordered margaritas which came in mugs akin to the kind you would use for root beer floats. Mugaritas. Something from that night gave me food poisoning. I really couldn't pin point what. Maybe the salad was bad? Maybe it was the three day old potato soup? Go to Walmart and buy snacks. You'd be better off. read more

This place is terrible. Cooks do not know how to cook. Service was terrible. We waited 25 minutes to get our drinks and over an hour to get our food. They were not even busy. I know why now. Had to wait 40 minutes for a table, 10 minutes to get a drink - it was so busy - there was nothing else open in town. We were staying at the Hampton inn across the street and ate here twice as the location was convenient. The service was good here. Friendly and quick. Busy place as well. The food was good. Chicken fingers and fries for the kids. Salmon and fajitas for us. No issues. Everything was what we expected and would eat here again anytime. read more

The server was excellent and is the only reason I'm not annoyed with giving this location a 1 star. The food however, was the worst Chili's food I've ever eaten. Found a chunk of avocado in my ranch, found a mushroom and chunk of onion in another side of cheese sauce. The pretzels that were supposed to go with the cheese sauce were burnt. The sliders were supposed to have bacon on them, I found the bacon on the plate outside of the slider. Along with that, the buns of the sliders were burnt. Again, waitress was good. Finding a restaurant with good service and good food in Carlsbad has become somewhat of a rarity. My experience here today did not surpass my mediocre expectations. From the get-go things did not start off on the right foot. We waited at the front for well over 5 minutes with several waitresses walking by and ignoring us. Finally getting fed up with the lack of service, we decided to seat ourselves. I couldn't help but notice the waitress standing in the back doing nothing as we found ourselves a table... We decided quickly what we wanted, so continued playing the waiting game for our waiter to come take our order. Once she helped us she thankfully remained attentive for the rest of our stay. The food was much better then previous visits, you usually play Russian roulette with the quality of food you'll receive here. With lack of other options on a Sunday afternoon in a town where everything closes down for the weekend, its play the game or dont eat. Gave ribs with barely any sauce... my fiancé food was messed up so bad that the waitress had to keep going back and getting the ingredients from the back to try to fix her food. If you come by yourself to this Chili's and do not sit at the bar, expect lackluster service. It takes a long time to get drinks refilled, my order taken, or even trying to get the server's attention. There isn't a problem when I visit here with another person. It's only when I sit solo. This is my third visit to this Chili's to watch NFL Sunday football: twice last season and once the 2009-10 season. All three times I sat at a tall table in the corner. I even tell the server from the initial order that I plan to have appetizers and lunch over the course of the game. That does not seem to make a difference. How poor is service? This is the only review I've written about a Carlsbad, NM business. I don't like to bash the "home town" businesses. All my other postings about Carlsbad businesses were articles or health inspection reports from the local newspaper. I will come here again with friends. This is a Chili's, and it is just like every other one in America. Actually, it's a little bit smaller than most of the other Chili's in America, so the interior is somewhat less spacious, and there is less sitting space. It's also one of the most popular joints in town (and one of the few places open past 8 or 9 p.m.), which makes for a great atmosphere, but also lot of people and a long wait on a Friday night. Under these circumstances, I got my meal to go. My order was missing a side of steamed broccoli, but the manager was quick to rectify the mistake and offered my choice of dessert or side on the house. Everything was quick, friendly and efficient. Except for the forgotten broccoli. But that issue was handled perfectly by the staff. Overall, I'm a happy camper. read more

It was a Chili's - they have a pretty consistent meal. I had a quesadilla with a salad with honey lime vinaigrette. The salad was exceptional. The quesadillas were good, and so was the cream sauce as well. I'm not sure that French Fries were the best choice to go with it, but they were fine. Impressed! We ordered a smoked chicken burrito and a chipotle chicken bowl, both from the lunch menu. Both tasted very fresh and were nicely garnished for an appealing presentation. This place has the happiest staff you'll go to around carlsbad. The service is great and quick.. even when they are super busy they somehow manage to never keep us waiting. Be careful if ordering off the 2 for $25, seems they like to cheat people out of the desserts advertised on that menu area. We were very disappointed in our waitress at the bar. We got the 2 for $25 special, which comes with one appetizer, 2 entrees and dessert. We got to go boxes and was going to get our cheesecake dessert to go and she told my husband it would be an extra $3 for a piece of cheesecake. He went around and asked another 2 waiters about the cheesecake and 2 for $25 and if it would cost another $3. They told him no, so he asked to speak to the manager. First of all, I am usually a fan of Chili's and I will eat there again. They have decent food and good hours. However, I will not be going back to this location. In short, it provided poor service and execution across the board. The wait was long to be seated. The server was more non-existent than anything. We waited 40 minutes for 1 of the appetizers and 45 minutes for the other (the entrees took an hour) . The steaks were over cooked and a side salad that we ordered never came out. To make matters worse, the server didn't apologize once. The only positive note was that the manager was reasonable and understanding. With Chili's being a restaurant chain, I think it's fair to say that customers should expect a certain amount of consistency across the board. Perhaps it was just this server, but we won't be going back to this Chili's location. read more
