We went in to celebrate Father's Day as well as my wife's birthday, first off they had nearly empty store most tables were empty and telling people 45 minutes to and hour wait. This has been the new norm for them something always wrong most people and there was a lot just leave. We were a party of 10 and they wanted to set us at two tables mind you there's plenty of tables empty to accommodate 10 people we wound up putting our two tables together then let's order drinks there out of pretty much everything to make a drink(alcohol) waitress was good food was good but there as well lacking food just not managed properly hasn't been in awhile what's there is good, just not much available food or drink wise now don't open till lunchtime really gone downhill!

Food is just ok, we are staying close by and there isn't that many choices... I didn't want ihop or sea food lol. It's wasn't fantastic was just ok. Service was good, food took forever but our waitress was very communicative so it's was fine.

horrible horrible horrible place. staff gets mistreated. kitchen runs out of food. many fights happen in the dining room. if you want to watch staff cry because they get yelled at come here. smells musty. food is subpar. dining room is treacherously cold just like the food. drunk men at the bar will grab at young women and women alike on the way to the bathroom. i hate chilis.

Pretty much the only bar in town (at least that's open on a Monday). Read the reviews ahead and…read moreknew what to expect - service is slooow. Mostly locals just minding their own business. Staff is friendly enough but also somewhat standoffish. Not the kind of place to make small talk with the bartender. Go Enjoy a beer and a shot and the nothingness of Carlsbad :)

I have read some of the ratings on here and they are pretty much the same. If you are visiting from out of town - Don't bother with this sad excuse of a cesspool. If someone buys you a drink, you get these poker chips to redeem at any time through the night. The bartender's preferred method of handing off said poker chip, is to throw it at you. I'm uncertain whether people here can differenciate between darts and poker. And I'm sure we will never know. On another note, if the little gremlin people who throw poker chips don't recognize you (because you live out of town) they will stop at no end to remove you from the bar. Apparently becoming emotional or looking at someone weird (regardless of the lack of ability to move ones forehead due to botox) is fair game to be removed. All of this is based on the education and assessment of the well-bred and well-educated chip-throwing bartender. I'm seeing a severe lack of people skills and management. Shame. Frankly, I'm not 100% convinced that the owners care about these complaints because everyone who lives there tells you not to go there. If management cared things would change. If I could give a negative review, I WOULD. I would have a much better time listening to a garbage disposal with a spoon in it and watching Kardashian re-runs until my eyes and ears bled.

Carniceria San Juan de Los Lagos in Carlsbad, NM has to be some of the best Mexican food I've ever…read morehad! I usually have a rule when traveling that I don't visit the same restaurant more than once, but this place was the exception. I came back three times in two days. Yes, it was that good. Sadly, the third time I came back, they were closed. The food tasted very authentic and absolutely worth the visit. I noticed some reviews mentioned communication issues or that the staff may not speak much English. I had a little bit of that struggle too, but honestly, that's how you know you might be in the right place for truly authentic Mexican food. I also felt like it was partly my fault for not doing enough research before ordering. But we figured it out, and the food was more than worth it. One small suggestion: it would be helpful if the menu had a little more English explanation, pictures, or item numbers to make ordering easier for both customers and staff. Overall, this is the kind of true hidden gem you hope to find in a small town. I would definitely take a detour to come back here whenever I'm in the area again.

Carnicería San Juan de los Lagos - Worth the Detour, Even Years Later…read more Some places stay with you. So much so that five years later, on a completely different road trip, you find yourself checking the map and thinking... "we're kind of close." Back in 2021, while exploring nearby national parks, we stumbled across Carnicería San Juan de los Lagos and loved it. This time, on our way to White Sands National Park, we made a small detour to see if it still held up. First surprise... I barely recognized the area. What used to feel like the middle of nowhere has filled in. Suburban life has arrived. Growth happened. But the place? Still there. Still good. Inside, it keeps that same warm, easy charm. Cute wood, farm-style Mexican decor, nothing fancy, just welcoming. The space has grown too, now clearly divided into restaurant, carnicería, and panadería, which means more reasons to linger. And the smell when you walk in? That alone could convince you to stay. Service was just as we remembered, sweet, friendly, and genuine. The kind that makes you feel like a regular even if you've been gone for five years. We went with pozole and shrimp tacos, and both delivered. Flavorful, comforting, exactly what we were hoping for. It's always a bit of a gamble revisiting a place you loved years ago. This one paid off. Still a favorite. Still worth the stop.
