I've been desperate for some decent mexican food since I left Kansas. I happened across Chilango after a job interview the other day and the bright neon green and pink drew me in. I was very excited to find that this was an English version of Chipotle with a similar setup and menu. It even TASTES like Chipotle. Yay!! I ordered a veggie burrito with chips and salsa. The burrito was awesome. The chips--eh. I agree with Tisha B. that a bit of lime and salt would make them fantastic. I got the mild salsa which was basically just diced tomatoes. Not great, but still good. Another big plus is lack of damage to my wallet--two burritos, two side orders and two Cokes cost me about £13. I dug the neon green. I also loved the hot pink stools and paper flowers. Kind of an odd choice of decor for a Mexican joint but it was sure happy and friendly. And I think Chilango is probably the only place in town where you'll hear a mariachi cover of 'Billie Jean'. You don't want to miss out on that! read more

Having lived in San Francisco for some time last summer I've been absolutely desperate to seek out a burrito place in London that does anything even remotely similar to Gordo's mind-numbingly good burritos. This place is certainly the best I've found. I was wandering around Ludgate Hill feeling hungry today when I stuck my head in the door, there was a bit of a queue (this being around 2pm on a weekday) but plenty of places to sit. The décor was modern and stylish and clean too. I queued up and was a bit miffed to find the staff treat you a bit like they do in Subway, they expect you to know the process, luckily I do but I felt a bit sorry for someone who didn't. I had a beef steak burrito with mild salsa, pinto beans and cheese. Oh my god. It was so tasty. Wrapped in tin foil just like in San Francisco and fat as my arm. I have one or two gripes though, the rice was white rice with some herbs in it not Spanish rice like in the Mission. The tortilla chips were not free and it wasn't served in a basket with the wax paper but .. meh who am I to complain? The beef was amazing, it was juicy and there was tonnes of it, the whole thing stayed together fairly well (although a bigger tortilla could have prevented the spilitting that happened towards the end). When I asked for a glass of tap water there was some confusion but I got it eventually and for £5.90 it made a fairly cheap lunch well, just as expensive as a Pret or McDonalds would have been. If I worked near here I honestly doubt I'd eat anything else. I wouldn't go waaay out of my way to eat here but I'd certainly go a bit out of my way. read more

I'm going to go wild and say that Chilango is better than Chipotle. Up for debate how much that's an accolade, but seeing as we're not in LA/Santa Fe/Las Vegas NM (yes, I have been there) right now, let's just enjoy all this food in a single tortilla. Their chips/guac and lemonade to be avoided though, in my opinion. The other week I got here really early and leisurely stuffed my face in front of an ever growing queue, which was awesome. The queue itself is also a highlight though, because you get to see them doing things in the kitchen, like slicing medium rare juicy steak. Top tip: get more than one type of salsa! If your ever in the Fleet Street/ St Paul's area, I would strongly suggest popping in here for lunch. It gets very busy at lunch time but the food is really good. They do both eat in and take away. If you go to Chilango at lunchtime the queue stretches the length of the building. Of course it does. These are damn fine burritos. Normally having to queue for things drives me mad, however at Chilango for some reason all it served to do was heighten my anticipation for the arrival of the parcel of meaty, ricey goodness. Especially mouthwatering was having to queue past the large windows of the kitchen, where the staff were preparing the next bins full of gorgeous marinated meat. It's a very tough gig to try to explain why something's great when there's no one particular thing that stands out about it, other than that it's... well, great! The amount of each burrito ingredient was fine, it was rolled right so when you bit it you got a good mixed mouthful, the ingredients were fresh and tasty, and the assembly was such that it didn't fall apart in your hands. This is a textbook example of a great burrito, and the only thing preventing me from going there more often is the fact that I've got to go past several other great burrito places to get there. However I'm looking forward to the next time I do! read more

Mexican food has landed in London, tell the press it has come to Fleet Street no less. However, I can update you that it does not seem all roses here. The opening was met with fanfare. Much fanfare, FREE FOOD. Free beer, long queues etc etc. The people cheered, reviews flew in, people talked but now the dust has settles I see 5 members of staff looking bored out onto the street with 3 or less customers in branch. Maybe things are going well and they just made a batch for the delivery boys to take to offices high up in sky, or maybe like I fear, even good places seem expensive for people trying to spend less at lunch except for that Friday team extrangance. I loved my first taste of Chilingos, they totally took me back to California with a lovely beef chilli burruito and a stunning bottle of Pacifico beer. Simply stunning importing that one, it is a great beer. The food has been discussed here and I would say it was really spot on, but the portion size itself was a bit wrong as all the cheese was in one corner bite for me. I will go back, just to give those people something to do. Like get me some munch and a Pacifico fro the fridge. One thing they might have got wrong is the opening hoursit is open from lunchtime to late at night, but closed weekends. Tourists still walk that street at weekends, they should take advantage. read more

Having lived in San Diego, CA for 6 years, where I developed a penchant for good Mexican food, I was sorely disappointed on returning to London. There are a few places in Covent Garden but these end up being more of an event as opposed to just a quick bite to eat. Cue Chilango. Similar to Chipotle (if you've been to one in America).! Cracking location bang in the middle of the city and great food to back it up. It's become a regular jaunt for us on a Friday afternoon and I've not got a bad word to say about it. Each week the queues are out the door but we never wait more than 5-7 minutes. Even while we wait, one of their staff is working the queue tempting us with chips and their variety of salsas! The menu is simple. Choice of Burritto, 3xTaco or Bowl. Add Rice. Then pick your meat - Beef, Chicken, Pork. Then add your cheese and salsa. Finally, top off with Guacomole (extra charge) and stand back and watch as your burritto is wrapped up to the size of a baby's arm and handed over for consumption. From start to finish, you watch as your meal is prepared quickly and effiiciently with the freshest ingredients. As Angela B said, top the whole thing off with a beer and you might not want to head back to the office! Not sure if ths place is open on weekends but if so, it's deffo worth a visit if you are in the area. I'd even go as far as saying you should make the pilgrammage just to get one. Looks like they will be increasing their locations soon so hopefully Chilango will be avaiable to the masses shortly! In fact, this yelper might go there tomorrow for another session. I ate in Chilango last night for the second time. I can't do it again. The service is rude and rushed. I asked them to heat up the steak for the tacos because I could see it was cold or maybe luke-warm. They refused and said since it was a take-away order I could do it at home. Their salsa is blah, too. I really want to see a great Mexican fast food place get going in London but this one doesn't seem to hold any promise. I woke up with an upset stomach. Daddy Donkey is like the rough and ready Burrito, this is more of the fast food version but with all fresh ingredients .. They always give me extra cheese and sour cream for no charge ,,, and the guac ... mmm mmm mmmmm! The only reason it doenst get 5 stars is it is just so crowded when you are waiting in line at lunch and if it is raining you get wet if the queue is out the door. I'm a mexican food snob just like every other person in the UK that's from California. Chilango was surprisingly okay. I came here because Tortilla wasn't open on Sunday evening, and after checking the Yelp reviews on my mobile I decided what the hell. The reason I was so prejudiced against this place to begin with is that the bright neon decor is very cheesy and offputting. When I think of mexican fast food I think cheap looking, slightly dirty/sketchy, metal chairs (which is something El Burrito in Bloomsbury captures well). Chilango, on the other hand, looks like a douchey Miami nightclub... so I figured this would be totally inauthentic. Well, the food probably was a bit inauthentic, but in a way that's comparable to a lot of American burrito joints like Baja Fresh and Chipotle. So really pretty good for if you hold it to that kind of standard! And apparently there is/was a promotion where if you add them on Twitter you get a coupon for a free burrito. p.s. Mexican has really kicked off in London, and I'd say that out of all of them, Chilango's is probably second best (with Chipotle being the first!). Pretty simple premise: rice, beans, meat, sauce wrapped up or as a salad, bth with loads of yummy guac! Having lived in San Diego, CA for a while, I've eaten a lot of burritos in my life, and a lot of other burrito places in London seem quite bland to me, so the ingredients here are definitely fresher, though not quite Cali-forn-aye-ay. This place is pretty fast though which is always handy; a new one has opened up in the City, which is rammo every time i go in there. If they did brown rice and/or packed in a little more into the burritos, then they I'd probably give this place 4 beautiful stars. read more

I don't even bother with this place during the day, because the queue during the hours of 12pm and 2pm is out the door and around the corner. Burrito punters will brave sub-zero temperatures whilst waiting in this queue in the dead of winter. And rain? They say, what rain? There are burritos to be eaten! So, experience has taught me that no London burrito is worth braving an epic queue and terrible weather during one's lunch hour for, no matter what a visual estimation of this place from 12pm to 2pm would suggest. Luckily, Chilango is open until 9pm on the weekday, so I've been here twice now for a sneaky burrito dinner after work. The burritos are pretty good, yeah. Last time I was there, actually, I got a single taco, a bag of tortilla chips and some guacamole. The corn tortilla was delightful, but this is mostly to do with the fact that corn tortillas are hard to come by. The medium hot sauce was zingy and made my mouth happy. The guacamole was a little bland, but I fixed it up nicely with some squeeze of lime (which I asked for at the counter) and some salt. This is all three-star stuff. But, one word: Cholula. This was the one... This is the place that made me realize we'd turned some kind of corner. After a decade of suffering through a burrito jones having moved here from San Francisco, I tried Chilango. I hadn't even heard of it, but while riding the number 15 bus eastbound on Fleet Street, I saw it. I remembered 'Chilango' means 'someone from Mexico City.' The name itself got my attention. On a whim got off at the next stop and tried a burrito - I was very pleasantly surprised! For once the guacamole was real! And they offered pinto beans instead of only black beans. I'd found it!!! It's not perfect, but as I said, I suddenly knew that what I'd been hoping for was happening! Overpriced. Decent. But not Mexican. The signs offer praise of Zagat awards and newspaper awards. All for "Best Mexican." Well, these people have clearly never had real Mexican food. I had the pork tacos. 3 for £6.70 is a steep price to begin with, but then I was informed that guacamole would be £1 extra. I abstained. The pork was the best part. It was juicy and warm and nice. But not seasoned. The pico de gallo was hardly pico-y. Mostly just chopped tomatoes with a touch of cilantro and the tiniest bit of onions. All in all, a filling, but incredibly bland and overpriced meal. Other reviews make a lot of comparisons to Chipotle. Having only ever had US Chipotle and not having tried the locations here in London, I couldn't really compare apples to apples. But thinking of American Chipotle, this place isn't even close. Why is it that London seems to like the *idea* of Mexican food, but seems to think that burritos are the be all, end all and that the food shouldn't have seasoning? Blargh. read more

I'd give this place 5 stars if you like burritos and are in the area. Otherwise, it's not really worth trekking out to unless you really like burritos. Their guacamole is good (costs extra), their salsas and pico de gallo are good also, but their tortilla chips have some extra unnecessary spices on them that I don't approve of, and it comes out seeming a little bit expensive for what you get. Their burrito rollers could also improve their technique, as mine tend to fall apart (maybe get bigger tortillas so they can be longer and less fat?). Still, the taste and feeling are right on the money, you'll feel pretty much like you're on the west coast/california at a better than average mexican joint, though not quite the kind of place real mexicans would go to (better than chipotle la salsa etc., not as good as a real mexican place). read more

I'm a burrito fan. This place makes top burritos. It was a match made in heaven. When I stopped by it was still early enough in the evening for me to be the only customer in the place. It is the City after all. I had the attention of all the staff and they made sure I was looked after. The big old chicken burrito was fantastic - especially so with the addition of the mushroom and sweetcorn beans, oh and a healthy dollop of guacamole. Watered down with a beer, which to me seems a little naughty in a fast food place like this, I was a happy chappy. I can well appreciate that it must be a nightmare in here during lunch hour - the service must suffer. But hey, that's not when I came. So. I have beef with Chilango. Not just this Chilango, all of them. Quoting Wikipedia: 'Chilango is a Mexican slang demonym for a person from or living in Mexico City or its surrounding areas. It may have a negative connotation when used by someone in one of the 31 States of Mexico...Those from the city also consider that any non-Chilango who uses the term does it in a derogatory fashion.' Basically, the restaurant is named after a Mexican slur that is viewed as negative when used by outsiders. I remember looking at the decorations at this branch and reading the captions making light of this fact and outright enjoying employing this name that is offensive to a certain group. I left astounded and haven't been back. Yeah, I suppose some people would say I'm nit-picking, but I'm really just looking out for American's southern neighbors. And I don't want them to get offended because they make REALLLY good food. And that's my beef with Chilango. read more

If you're choosing between this location and the one on Chancery Lane, take the extra 3 minutes and hit up the Chancery Lane location. This one is smaller, doesn't have the tap water set-up, and doesn't take the loyalty cards. In summary from my other review, though, this is a great lunch choice. This is my first review on Qype. I'm a bit of a burrito fan, and Chilango was the first restaurant I wanted to review. I had my first Chilango the day before their official opening, some time ago. I distinctly remember this day, and immediately telling my Mexican best friend that I'd discovered a great place that does authentic tacos similar to those found in Mexico. Were it not for the fact that I don't quite work close enough to go there regularly, I could easily eat here every day. Suffice to say that he burritos and tacos are excellent. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is vibrant, even when the place is full of bankers on a weekday lunchtime. I love that the entire kitchen is visible through a glass wall, and the whole operation is efficient and friendly. Even on days when the queue extends outside the shop, you can still get your burrito within 15 minutes which is great for lunchtime. read more

I was starting to despair that I would find a Mexican restaurant that lived up to my year of living in California, where authentic Mexican cuisine is as popular as fish and chips. When I came across this restaurant (which was hard to miss, it's poppy and bright decor is magnetic and fun) it sounded like a fun concept to me and a rather cheap lunch. I tried a Conchito (shredded pork) Burrito without the rice but extra cream and cheese for around £6. You can watch it being made by a Mexican chef along the assembly line, and somehow the final result is always bigger than you anticipate, the eyes are always bigger than the stomach, are they not? The food was great, but the real clincher was the Mexican Pacifico beer that I washed it down with - hands down my favourite drink in the world. read more

I am still having food daydreams about the fresh, delicious, hearty burrito I ate on my recent visit to Chilango'sTHREE WEEKS AGO! Seriously, what do they put in their food? I'm obsessed! I don't know if it was the delicately flavoured coriander-lime rice, the comforting mushy beans, the crisp salad or the chunky guacamole, the fact there was no leakage out of the substantial wrap or perhaps all of those things in combination, but I haven't been able to shut up about the place since. If someone offered me a days work doing something really crap near Fleet Street I'd probably say yes just so I could get lunch at Chilango's. Apparently they're closed at the weekend though - boo! Strangely it took me almost 3 months to venture down to this branch of Chilango, as i was spending most of my time up at the Angel one. I had been warned that trying to get near the place during the week day around lunch time is dam near impossible, as the line of hungry city workers stretch as far as the eye can see. So i made apoint to go one evening midweek with a friend. I love Chilango, i love the burritos, i love the sizes, and i love the atmosphere. I always find the staff helpful, energetic and willing to explain any part of the process to any mexican newbies in the area. For my money, Chilango are the best Mexican joints in london, and the Fleets Street location maintains that trend read more

I come here in between classes, and while it's usually busy, the service is quick and I can manage to find a place to sit (most do takeaway). I used to stick to tacos which actually weren't too special but satisfied my Mexican food craving. Now I've switched to naked burritos - they leave me feeling less guilty afterward and are actually pretty good. Recommended. read more

I am so exciting to finally work near this Chillango branch again, had lots of good food memory when I was around this area 5 years ago. Always a big Fan of this branch. Today, try out the mixed chicken and steak naked burrito. Proportion is still the best compared to the London wall branch. Chicken still good. But I am disappointed by the steak this time. A bit over cooked and not hot enough even I buy it at 12:30 today: ( it used to be so juicy and cook as medium rare!! So mark it as four star only this time. The City workers frequent this lively restaurant during the week but there is another branch on Upper Street, Islington if you need a fix on the weekend. On the hunt for burritos for lunch from work, I spotted Chilangos on Google Maps. I am somewhat of a "burrito lover" and so was intrigued to go and check out it. Having arrived I was impressed by what looked like a short queue outside, that was until I got inside and realised it was 5 times as long. That being said it moved along quickly enough and I was at the counter in about 5 minutes or so of waiting. The counter was stuffed full of the usual options black-pinto-refried, no surprise there, but I was shocked to see the ridiculous prices. Nearly 6 pounds for a chicken burrito and 80p for additional guac??? I know I heard a fellow burrito-buyer squawking about how the place is stuffed full of Goldman Sachs employees, and probably explains the high concentration of Americans, but really? £6.60 for a burrito with guac? Having been used to 5 dollar burritos in the US, the price of London-burritos is definitely something i find hard to swallow. To me Chilango is just another burrito joint with extortionate prices, and I will no doubt be heading to Whitecross street or some other direction in future when I feel like I need to douse that inner devil in me! All round good flavour, quick service, just lousy prices and no substantial advantage for them. read more

Really good burritos. On a par with Adobo, and the portions are bigger. I'd also recommend the Chicken Salad, which is basically a burrito without the Tortilla and with more ingredients. The one downside is that £1 for Guacamole is a bit excessive. Staff were very friendly and smiley. I hope they're well paid because Chilango has some of the best customer service I've seen in London. They also have no problem throwing in little extras. For instance, if a burrito is supposed to come with 'sour cream or cheese', they'll give you both on request, as you would hope considering the price! read more

The quality of ingredients is spot on fresh. Chicken is marinated and cooked to perfection. Impossible for a quiet lunch during the week though but everything about Chilango is catered for city professionals looking for a special takeaway lunch. I'm from Texas and have been in London (which I love) for 5 years. But I've tried all over town, and no matter how hard I've searched, I've not been able to fill the burrito-shaped hole in my heart/stomach. There are "mexican" and "tex-mex" places dotted around the capital but one thing they typically have in common is sub-par fake mexican cooking. Then Chilanogs came. The burrito gods smiled kindly on me the day Chilangos threw open its doors 2 minutes from my work. The steak is well marinated and couldn't be more tender - charred on the outside and pink in the center (re). The pulled pork is simmered to perfection. Every time I go in, the pulled pork and steak battle in my head for a place in my stomach - I try to give them both equal opportunities (both always get the job done). In an attempt at a healthy eating plan for 2010, I'm trying to get the burrito salad more than the burrito. This plan typically fails me when I get to the register as I always feel deserving of the chips and salsa as well. But you've got to treat yourself, or you could go crazy. My one (big) complaint is that Chilangos used to sell a 250ml bottle of Hardy's Cab Sav (with its own plastic cup) - which my work colleagues and I would drink at our desks when working late. Amazing. Apparently, though, we were the only people to buy the wine and Chilangos has stopped selling it. If they ever bring it back, please try it (its hard to get any work done at night w/out this). At least they have a good beer selection. Hands down my favourite burrito joint in London and a regular lunchtime spot for me. This fast yet fresh mexican outlet follows the typical setup for these places, big posters above the assembly area offering an array of burritos, tacos, salads and nacho boxes. I usually go for the chicken burrito, I love the marinade they use which is the right balance of spicy and a little bit salty (in a good way!). They use chicken breasts with the skins on so there is always a nice crispiness in your burrito. The usual selection of pinto beans and rice are always hot, and the salsas are delicious. I opt for a combination of medium and mild, the mild tomato salsa is juicy and crunchy with good coriander flavours. Guacamole is extra (standard for London) but delicious. Last time I went I also sampled the tacos which were fresh flour tacos as opposed to traditional corn. The decor is quirky and fun with lucha libre masks on mannequin heads and a large avocado and burrito themed graffiti mural the length of one wall. The queues can be long but the friendly and efficient staff mean the wait is never long. read more

Echo previous reviewers comments and some. For all you mex-starved yanks out there Chilango is for you. They have proper guac, fresh salsa and the meat and marinades is excellent. Chilango is about as far from the typical bland London tex mex gristle slop you can get. Try to avoid going between 12.30-2 as the queues are always out onto the street (although they move quickly) and note it is not open weekends. For late night and weekend burritos go to the other Chilango on Upper St, Islington, where there is also more seating. Both stores are clearly set up with replication in mind so hopefully there will be plenty more to come. read more

I like this place. However, being that most of the time I'd have to bypass Daddy Donkey to get to Chilango, I doubt I'll go back too often. I think it's better than most of the Mexican joints in London but (fortunately) we're starting to have some real options in the way of burritos and other Mexican/Tex-Mex yummies and well, Chilango just sort of falls under the 'just okay' heading.
