Went there after I moved back to El Paso. Used to come here when in high school. This used to be a hidden gem, not anymore. Their jumbo hot dogs have shrunk in size. Their tacos are now a shadow of what they used to be. Their sauce sucks now and they put so little...oh, and over $4 for an oder of 3. Unreal, will never return. read more

I just moved here two weeks ago and everyone keeps telling me to go to chicos. So I've bee twice and this time I decided to go in for a second try. This place is kitschy and obviously unique in its old skool feel. It's an obvious institution in El Paso, but i just don't understand the big deal. Twice I got the double order of tacos and this time I got small fries. Ambiance wise I give it a 4 out of 5. It's obviously an old place and they are trying to keep it the way it was. That's where my stars end. Twice I have gotten the tacos where they were cold, the soup is watery and with little flavor. And whats up with the cold cheese . Honestly I thought seeing that salsa or what ever it is that they tacos are in look to have flavor. But looking and tasting are two different things. Also, I got small fries. They were more like kids small. And they were cold also. Maybe I need to come earlier in the day. Maybe it will be better. This is twice. Not sure if there will be a third time. An El Paso tradition! This is the place for those who grow up and move away come to the minute they come back to El Paso. The tacos are not your Taco Bell tcos. These aren't some folded crunchy boxed shells. These are rolled up tight and deep fried to a crunch. Then they are smothered in a red enchilada like sauce and topped with a handful of shredded cheese. Get the order of 6. That may not even be enough. Pick them up with your fingers. Drop a dollop of green sauce on the end and bite it off! As the wife says, "they are sooooo bad, they are delicious ". We all have a place that we love just because of that! Cheap but not sure worth trip. Came as I had hesitation as to WHY this was on best thing I ever ate... I'm pretty sure it's more of a nostalgia thing if u had it when you were young. Sign says tacos but if you had flautas, its really this or a rolled fried taco. Single comes with 3 "tavos" bathed in a spicy tomato "water".. not really sauce. It's tasty tho and then tons of cheese on top... interesting and prices have changed from pics so see mine that says 2022. Also ordered a hamburger. Buns were way too toasted, meat almost burnt.. again, cheap but McDonalds might be better. Giving 3 stars for tasty sauce and their salsa is spicy and good... other than that... food network needs to rethink this spot.. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I am the furthest thing from a local. Raised in Montana far from the best tacquerias money can buy, I decided to give Chico's a try. I bought a double and single order and it set me back $8. I went to town on the double and actually really enjoyed it. I mixed the green jalapeño salsa with the red salsa already in the boat. It seemed as though they were someone else's. YUCK! Should've known when one of them came back with Whataburger for her break. The highest rating I have given to a Chico's! And it may be debatable if it deserves even that much. If you're not a local, I don't care what people say...YOU DO NOT NEED TO TRY CHICOS. Unless you're used to cheap quality food, you will absolutely hate this place. And if you are suckered into checking out Chico's just know what you're getting into...drunken flautas. It's more fun making these at home because you can use quality ingredients and really bring out some flavors. That being said, I personally have a love-hate relationship with Chico's. It's like that one creepy guy you went to school with that wore a cape and talked about himself in third person, that you didn't want anyone to find out was actually your brother (I don't really have a brother...or do I?). I beg visitors not to go to Chico's or at least wait until after they've experienced the real local cuisine like Tabla, Tom's Folk Cafe, Crave, and G2 (I'm listing these in hopes you will go to any of these places instead of Chico's). Chico's unfortunately gives EP a bad name because you either love it or hate it, there's no in between. Being a local, I get it and in fact a tiny [drunk] part of me loves it. I drown my rolled tacos in the green salsa, order extra government cheese, and sop up the tomato-y juices with my crinkle cut fries (after I dip them in a mixture of the green salsa and ketchup). Yup, I eat here and I love it, but I know that this isn't good eats. The first time I had Chico's I was maybe 10 and then returning to EP in my high school years just helped it grow on me more. I have no real data on this, but Chico's may be an acquired taste. This particular Chico's is one of the older ones and it really shows. There's video games circa the 90's, a juke box that drunk patrons will occasionally play Shakira on nonstop, and the always present security guards that makes me feel like I'm in an 80's movie where at any moment a fight may break out (thankfully I've never seen a fight here). Service is ehhh. But the busboys are pretty dang quick since this Chico's is always packed. I guess my two biggest tips if you do decide to venture here are this: 1. If the tacos aren't your thing (and that's a huge possibility) just order some fries and squirt some ketchup in the green chile for dipping...that'll hold you over for a bit. 2. If you love them (which instantly makes you a local if you do) and decide you want a double...don't do it! Get two singles instead! More cheese, more tomato sauce, more everything. read more

I had been excited for so many years about coming here. As a Mexican, I love to travel and try different types of Mexican food. Not all is the same just to clarify, but hey have a certain similarity which they all share. Ok let me me start off with he sauce it's really good, I for one enjoyed the Ranchero sauce you guys have. In my opinion a little watery but good. Now the cheese I think is fine as well. The tortilla tasted a little old or the oil needed to be changed. Now one thing I did not like is that the tacos had ground beef on them. I think the you should use shredded beef instead of ground beef. Te use of ground beef gives it a bland taste. I felt like I got cheated. I would honestly pay the extra dollar or so if you switched to shredded beef. Overall I don't think I would come here again but I did appreciate the experience. This is another iconic El Paso establishment, the home of rolled tacos in a soupy sauce with lots of cheese smothered on top. You can order 3, 6, or more rolled tacos according to your appetite. Absolutely cash only. For your convenience, there's an ATM in the restaurant. It is very crowded during evening hours with local patrons. Parking and seating may be a challenge at times though the crowd seems to move in and out pretty quickly (perhaps many orders are to-go ones). Your curiosity for the local fame will be fulfilled. As kids we would go to the stand on Alameda almost every Sunday. Being an El Paso native and now living in LA, I returned to a stand on Zaragoza and was shocked how bad the food was. The tacos were BLAND, no flavor Whatsoever and swimming in watery tomato sauce. Cheese tasted old and hard. Definitely a must try if you're passing through El Paso. It's iconic, and they seem to be always busy. The place was packed, and I mean PACKED when the hubby and I stopped by for an order of their rolled tacos. It was a typical Sunday night apparently, complete with police detail for security. Umm, what? Anyway, the place was so crowded that we ordered to-go and enjoyed all salty, greasy goodness in the car. It was worth it. The tacos came loaded with cheese and since our order was to go, they gave us cups for the broth. Well, we slathered that broth all over and it was soaked up by the taco shells and melted the cheese. They were definitely tasty and a cheat day meal. I would've wanted to enjoy the tacos in the restaurant to really take in the experience, but alas it wasn't meant to be. I like Chicos Tacos it's a good place to go eat when I come visit. Unfortunately tonight was a different story, while my Father and the counter person had a disagreement/misunderstanding the security guard came over and thought he would try and settle things down by telling my Father he would, and I quote, "Drop him". This isn't the normal security guard de-escalation tactics. This also didn't go over to well with myself, my brother in law or father. Fortunately we remained cool because, well it's a public place and we have manners. Shortly afterwards the other security guard apologized and explained this was a new guard and hasn't been trained.The counter person also apologized afterwards due to the misunderstanding that happened. This new guy shouldn't be a guard, he's going to meet people that aren't level headed and be put in his place. *On a side note of the tall skinny glasses security guard would like to meet in a cage or on the mat to learn humbleness in a safe environment I will be more than willing to oblige him when I come back. read more

It has been years since I have been to chicos tacos - so can really compare how it was & is now. The now : there is no more calling in one's orders & Chicos taco never answers their anymore- which means if want to call for an order & went home & found that one missing a item one out of luck . There's is no such thing as customer service on the phone.. The single order of tacos ,the tomato sauce - that is place on top of the three tacos has been minimized /less sauce. The tacos are super, super hard as a rock the inside of the taco is burnt. Has, soaking the tacos are supposedly to soften them but now one has soften burnt tacos inside & out tacos. In a nut shell Chico tacos is not was it use to be . Not really recommended- quality of tacos & food gone down. Along with customer service. New generation doesn't know how good chicos used to be , now it's just Bad in every aspect -Customer service & food. read more

Looks like a tired old hamburger joint from back in the 70's. I have never eaten their Mexican food there that I have not gotten ill within an hour afterwards. No one else in any of the groups I have been there with got sick so I don't think it is food poisoning. It seems to something in their seasoning, overly saltiness, or the greasiness'. The food is served quickly but sort of just slapped down on the counter. About the only food I would recommend there is their hamburger and it is in the style found south of the border - with a hot dog on it, but Roscoe's is right behind them. We went here in the evening around 9pm and it was packed. Coming from Southern California I expected the tacos to taste like rolled enchiladas. They put three rolled tacos in a red sauce with a mountain of cheese. The sauce is kind of runny buts thickens up when the shredded cheddar melts. The sauce definitely needed same salt which I added and it made a great soup afterwards. I also had a burger and it was kind of bland. Would definitely come again for the Chico's tacos. read more

It was unique. My husband was very excited to try Chico's and we knew pretty much what to expect. There was an officer at the door, who wouldn't let us in without a mask.
