This place had 5 stars from the moment I walked in. On a Friday night in downtown South Bend (Notre Dame territory), I walk into a charming cajun cafe painted with bright orange walls with live music being performed by Brooke Annibale. Oh happy accident, how I love thee! Yelp drew me in, and once I saw beignets listed in the reviews, it was clear that the car would drive itself to Chicory Cafe! I adore beignets. :) The staff, two ladies, were so engaging and even though it was close to closing time, took genuine interest in helping me pick the perfect cup of coffee, a Spanish latte (chicory coffee with steamed/foamed sweetened condensed milk and a hint of cinnamon). Stellar choice! As she handed it to me, she said, "I didn't put the lid on yet, and I wanted to see your reaction when you tasted it. I'm so excited for you to taste it for the first time!" How cute is that?! They made sure the 4 orders of beignets I was about to transport to family was packaged in such a way to ensure freshness; wrapped well with the powdered sugar separated ensuring a fresh and lightly dusted sprinkle at home, instead of a gloppy been sitting around absorbing kind of thing. I planned to order a small cup of jambalaya, and an order of beignets. Then I saw the Andouille Mac and cheese listed on the huge blackboard menus-- and THEN I saw the Andouille Alfredo pasta with garlic and cremini mushrooms listed, and IT.WAS.ON. Seriously could not pass that up, and at $11 a la carte, I would order that again in a heartbeat. Rich, creamy Alfredo over a corkscrew pasta and chunks of andouille sausage, garlic and mushrooms mixed throughout? Pure decadence. My husband chose the Creole Club sandwich and it was a great sandwich, hitting marks for flavor, texture, freshness and an all around good deal at $6. Not huge, but quite filling and hearty. No complaints from the hubby. I tasted it too, and I agree, delicious! As I waited for our orders, I was able to enjoy 2 live performers and I enjoyed one so much, I bought her CD on the spot! Got a picture with her and chatted briefly with her. Her voice was perfection live and in person, just as flawless as the produced CD. I'd never heard of her but I think many will be hearing about Brooke Annibale soon. Kind of a Plumb meets Sarah MacGlauchlin meets Jewel kind of vibe. Beautiful voice, sweet girl. Heads up, she'll be at Uncommon Ground in Chicago in October 2013. Guess who will also be there? Yup, I sure will. I brought my daughter to lunch at Chicory today to celebrate the end of her college semester. I spent many years working in downtown South Bend and eating at Chicory, so this is where I chose to enjoy a lunch when I came back to town. We both ordered the veggie hummus sandwich and iced tea. The bread was decent. The veggies were generous and of good quality. The hummus was a bit stingy. The iced tea was weak and a waste of money. But what ruined our experience was that on this very cold day (rain/snow mix), a staff member came to the dining area and propped the door fully open. This had us, and two other tables of customers, putting our coats back on. I asked a staff member about it. She said "We have to. It's hot in the kitchen." I said "well your customers are freezing." She wasn't concerned in the least. I'm sorry if the kitchen is hot. But that's part of the job of working in a kitchen. We paid good money to sit with a cold wind blowing on us and that is super rude to your customers. read more

I had just done yoga so I wanted to try a local coffee shop in SB. this place didn't disappoint. They had tons of options, including a great selection of new fall flavors. I opted for the maple Bourbon Latte, iced. It was divine. Not too overpowering, but a nice subtle taste overall. This would be a place I'd frequent if I ever lived in the area. A very nice place if you're looking for a casual restaurant / cafe. They are known for their coffee variety. But also, you should know that they have an excellent menu. Really good food. Personally I like the Italiano. Very good. I would suggest trying the food in addition to the coffee. The owners are usually there and take a lot of pride in the Chicory Cafe. I was visiting South Bend for my fiancé's graduation from Notre Dame. Typically in South Bend, I have to resort to eating salads for all of my meals because there are so few gluten free options. We came to Chicory Cafe right before we left for Chicago. Chicory Cafe aims for a New Orleans vibe, but misses the mark as far as decor goes. As a native New Orleanian, I appreciate the effort, and I'm more concerned with the food than the decor, but I think it's really funny how on the menu, beignets are listed as "Beignets (Ben-Yays)" We didn't try any of the "southern" or "cajun" food as I typically don't trust those adjectives when I see them in the midwest, but the food that we did have was really tasty. When we ordered, I informed the cashier that my future mother-in-law and I have a gluten allergy. She quickly listed off a litany of items that could be made gluten free (way more than the website had listed). Chicory Cafe can make any sandwich on a gluten free bagel or gluten free bread, and any of the mac and cheeses with gluten free noodles. You can also make your meal a combo with a gluten free blueberry muffin and Zapp's Chips (a true New Orleans staple). I had a Grilled Caprese sandwich on a gluten free bagel. The sandwich had honey on it, which was an interesting yet delicious choice. My fiancé had the Bacon Bacon mac and cheese which made my future-mother-in-law (also gluten intolerant) and I both wish we had ordered the gluten free version. It looked and smelled delicious. We will definitely be popping in next time we are in town for some more gluten free goodies. read more

Go here all the time and the gravy has been cold the last couple times and then you ask for a remake and they had you back microwaved chewy biscuits that were originally crispy and great. I really, really like this place for its delicious food, great coffee, and laid-back atmosphere. As a law student at ND, going to Chicory for a couple of hours was to me the equivalent of spending the weekend in an alpine spa resort. The food here is undoubtedly delicious. Sure, maybe I wish the sandwiches were a little larger, but every last morsel was like a tasty gift from God. The coffee is top notch too. Even though I'm not a big coffee drinker (more of a tea guy), I enjoy the high quality brew offerings at Chicory. I get cold easily, and often found myself a little chilly here, so minus .5 stars for that. Also, I wish they had more couches, so .5 stars off for that too. I like the live music that they have here on select evenings. Also, they have an assortment of fair trade wares and gifts that you can buy for others, or take home as your own loot. w00t! Ever since visiting NOLA this past year, I've been wanting to try the food here. I mean, who doesn't crave a beignet after visiting the French Quarter?? Today I had the opportunity to try a couple things. First, the spinach artichoke dip. It was ok. Had a decent flavor but seemed like it was pulled out of the fridge and reheated. The bread it came with left something to be desired. I was hoping for a crusty French loaf and this was dull and mealy. Nothing special. I had beignets, of course. They didn't have much powdered sugar on them and had a much yeastier flavor than what I've had in the past. It was ok but I wouldn't order them again. I had a chai latte with oat milk that was to die for, though. It definitely saved the day. I'm looking forward to going back and trying a po' boy and maybe some crawfish Mac and cheese. read more

There is plenty of seating, and there was a good mix of people here: College students working on laptops or studying, business people (it's one street away from various county government offices and the courthouse, and is in the heart of downtown South Bend), people out having a leisurely lunch, etc. The staff is very welcoming, upbeat, and energetic. There are plenty of different sandwiches and paninis to choose from, and everything is reasonably priced for what it is. We were at the downtown Mishawaka location. There is also a location in downtown South Bend. This is a casual place, where you order at the counter and your order will be brought to you. Seating is available both inside and outside, both comfortable. Outside seating has a sun sail over part of the area to keep you cooler. The menu is mostly soups and sandwiches, but the roasted vegetable mac'n'cheese (a very large serving - take some home) is a clear winner. The jambalaya and gumbo are both suitably Cajun, with a bit of a kick, but not too much for the average taste. The biscuits with andouille sausage gravy is another Cajun standout. Chicory Cafe is a nice relaxing space with some great menu items mixed with some m'eh beverages. I wasn't there on a night when they had music, but I loved how much space they had to accommodate a large crowd if necessary -- all without sacrificing the intimacy of those who simply want a cool place to just chill. I had two drinks during my visit -- a chai latte and an Italian-inspired watermelon mojito-style drink. Neither were that great. The mojito had an odd aftertaste and the chai was either poorly made or from a bad mix. That's a shame because everything else was on point. On the other hand, the jambalaya was awesome! It had the perfect blend of texture, flavor and heat that comes from either natural talent or years of practice. I would definitely recommend it. I also enjoyed the beignets. They're not for the health conscious, but certainly worth the money. A bit awkward to eat (but aren't all beignets like that?), the powdered sugar isn't excessive and the bread isn't too doughy or too crispy. If I'm ever up South Bend's way, I'd visit Chicory Cafe again. It's clean, quiet, spacious and close to plenty of parking. Although a weekday visit might tell a different story about the parking.
