If I could give River Valley a negative star I would!!!! We arrived yesterday (Mar7/15) at 2pm only…read moreto discover there was a HUGE line up of people waiting to buy tickets; at least 60 people. After a half hour wait and only moving ahead about 2 feet, I decided to go in to the "lodge" and ask if it would be possible to add a couple of more staff on the ticket booth. I guess with 250 people already on the hill they probably couldn't care less about anyone else being there. Finally after 50 minutes of frustration we got our tickets only to discover that a new rule was put in force and our two grandchildren under 12 had to have a helmet (nice money grab guys!). So after paying damn $85.00 we proceeded to the hill only to discover that there were 6 lineups with about 40 people in each one. So needless to say it was a long exacerbating situation for hundreds of people. Their system for moving the sliders (customers) away from the bottom of the hill was non-existent. So, it took 30 seconds to slide down the hill and approximately another 1 1/2 minute for all 3 lanes to clear before the next group could be released. So, we were at least 20 - 25 minutes just standing in line waiting for a 30 second ride. It was so ridiculous that we left after 4 rides. Therefore each ride was over $5.00 each. BTW: they now have your ticket limited to a 2 hour session. So if you wanted more than 4 rides you have to go through the entire process again buying more tickets.. The grandkids had fun but couldn't understand why they weren't allowed to keep going; that bummed them out. I was planning to sit inside and have a drink and a bite to eat but their (River Valley) greed just irritated me so, we just left. I think a lot of other customers felt the same way because out of the 300 - 350 people wandering around, there was only a handful people eating. When an establishment charges $3.00 for a ten cent bottle of water, I simply walk away. My daughter and I commented about how foolish they are; if they made their prices and systems middle class family friendly, then they would have people returning multiple times throughout the winter. But this way they gouge the livin' shit out of you once and you never return; at least we won't!!

Hockley Valley Resort - I had the darkest room. Felt depressing. Certainly now a place to relax

The Cabin at Hockley Valley…read more If you're ever out in Hockley Valley, The Cabin is a solid spot. The vibe is smooth dark lighting, big comfy chairs, real cozy. When I went with my partner, it was almost empty, so it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Real private, real peaceful. Staff was great too super mindful of my partner's allergies, which I appreciated heavy. I had the Linguine di Mare with mussels, clams, bay scallops, prawns, all swimming in this rich tomato sauce they call sugo (had to look it up, not gonna lie..haha). Seafood was fresh, pasta cooked right, and the flavours...On point! I went with the large size--worth the $3 upgrade. Paired it with a glass of house wine, and yeah, that combo brought it all together. Good food, chill ambiance, and a laid-back luxury vibe. Rating: 4 out of 5

I visited Hockley about 15 years later... to train a new skier. Hockley is a very kid friendly…read moreresort to ski at, with moderate slopes and the black diamond is really just a Blue level. One arrival, you park on the left side is the closest to the skiing area, walk around to the back and you have access to the rental and lift ticket pick up. Rentals are easy, they even give beginners poles (not that they should get poles). I took my newbie from magic carpet to lift managing to get down the hill without falling and with great control. People are nice on the slopes, a patron saw someone in our group had fallen and just checked on them. I also helped some mangled newbies untwist their legs with the fall. Not sure where to get hot chocolate but the weather was nice, the people were nice. I noticed on the magic carpet my newbie kept sliding backwards so the lift operator pulled the newbie thru to make sure she could ride the lift, thanks! The location was not crowded that I could ski backwards without worrying about hitting anyone- oh I didn't get any issues skiing backwards too. It's a pity March 19 was the last day open. Will return next time when I have some new skiers to train.

While trekking is offered many places in the states, I took the opportunity to visit Boler Mountain. The part offers biking, an adventure park, volleyball and many other activities. During the winter, they offer things like skiing. We purchased tickets for the treetop adventure for beginners concluded with the big zip. The Big Zip is an 1100 foot zip line that takes you to the bottom of the mountain and was included in the ticket. Being that this was our first time trekking, we had no clue what to expect , but Madison was extremely helpful with showing us how to utilize our equipment during the demo and we had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend doing the beginners if this is your first time, but if you find that you like it, you should upgrade to the intermediate. I would recommend to wear comfortable tennis shoes as it can be a little bit slippery if your shoes are not sturdy. They also have The Patio where people can order drinks/food and is open in the evening. Special thanks to the entire staff as they were extremely helpful to me and my boyfriend. Cole was very knowledgeable about London and surrounding areas and gave us tons of history and recommendation for the city. Everything was clean here and we didn't encounter any issues. When we arrived to the beginners area, we did not see anyone but it's because the staff was helping someone who was stuck on the zip line. We just went ahead and began the course but usually there is someone there to help you. Luckily, we got through the entire course without an issue. We loved it and hope to visit Boler Mountain again!

I had been participating in an event in Waterloo which pretty much took out every hotel from there to Cambridge. It was late, and I needed to be back by 7am. My plan previously was to return home to Toronto and come back in the morning, but the schedules changed and I ended up being there much later than anticipated. I was tired, and desperate. My GPS sent me to this block, and all I wanted was a room to essentially take a long nap. Upon arrival I should have turned back, but again desperation seeped in. The room was dirty, the bathroom was obviously not cleaned, there was food left in the fridge, and the room smelled like a homeless person. Maybe it's aptly named the Mayflower because it smelt like a ship full of English separatists at the end of its 66 day journey. However the room did offer a luxurious waterbed (insert sarcasm meter here --- I felt the bottom of the floor upon getting into it). The pillow was an orange piece of foam in a pillow case. I was told there were no other rooms available, and I spent the next hour going to a few other motels near by without much luck. It was either going to be my car or this dump. Essentially I slept in the chair without changing my clothes. I should have just stayed in the car. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Mayflower+Motel,+1189+Victoria+St+N,+Kitchener,+Waterloo+Regional+Municipality,+Ontario+N2B+3C8,+Canada&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.808514,79.013672&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FfxClwIdsl80-w&split=0&hq=&hnear=Mayflower+Motel,+1189+Victoria+St+N,+Kitchener,+Ontario+N2B+3C8,+Canada&ll=43.471484,-80.453739&spn=0.031144,0.077162&z=14&layer=c&cbll=43.467527,-80.453736&panoid=woxh5LWCNoOODcDNEuBCPA&cbp=12,173.94,,0,12.29

    Snow Valley Ski Resort

    (25 reviews)

If you're looking for an entry slope, Snow Valley could be it…read more We visited for the first time in years and were pleasantly surprised by the small crowd. It's a smaller venue for skiing with 20 generally short slopes ranging from green to blacks, plus a tubing terrain. The chalet is small with a good number of attendees at the ticket booth, equipment shop and 2nd floor restaurant that serves up basic meal bites with a weeknight deal. Tickets are checked manually at the lifts. Many blue & black slopes themselves are relatively narrow with a few runs that are frequented into soft chopped snow. One of the hills was cordoned off for downhill racing while other slopes had minimal skiers & snowboarders heading down beside us. The lifts moved at a brisk pace although there is a triple-lift with tight seating and a tight off-ramp that was more suited for doubles to avoid tripping. The level of difficulty on the black diamond slopes was low. There is also a freestyle terrain park with jumps on the east side beside the tubing terrain, and a patch of mogul bumps on a west side slope. Overall the resort is oriented towards beginners as a short 1 hr GTA drive near Barrie. Skip it or hit it? On the one hand I was intrigued by the short narrow slopes, on the other there are more challenging and better ski facilities a little further away. Not sure how often we'd come back.

I went in to redeem a 2 for 1 ticket from the ski and snowboard show a few months back. What's nice to see is the conveyor belt with their main base lift which moves the crowds fast. It's been a long time since I tried the other chair lifts and I hardly remember how fast they have the speed set here so you have minimal wait time- not that I had any competition because there were only 30 or so other patrons. The sad part about this place is the food- they used to have a burger made from scratch- not anymore so the patties seem to be just vanilla. The chalet / restaurant is cute log style with fire place so if you're abandoning any family it's a bit tolerable.
