(Tookout 11/23/20 MO & 11/24/20 TU both @ 4:00pm): This hot chick recently moved in next door to my barber!
In the throes of a COVID-19 pandemic, my barbershop was finally able to open which allowed me to get my overgrown mane sheared when a Chick Next Door at the corner caught my eye. The latest in an ever-growing line of Nashville hot fried chicken joints, I grew up and loved fried chicken from Kentucky Fried Chicken, the bagged deal from Albertsons, and good old-fashioned home-cooked chicken with the splattered oil and sticky mess that needed to be cleaned up afterwards. However, it wasn't until six months later when I finally approached her and introduced myself. Was this love at second sight or a fleeting fancy affair!?
PURCHASE
2 Sliders & Fries Combo ($12.99 x2): Of the five hot level options, I chose the middle "hot" which barely warmed me up. Volcanic red-colored thick moist pieces of chicken saddled with coleslaw, pickles, and their house-made chick sauce barely held together by a lightly-toasted brioche bun, these were finger-licking sloppily amazing sliders that left me wanting more even though I was stuffed after I inhaled them both https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=EDVdG3KNbhAR054lvVCTIA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw! The abundance of seasoned fries had a blissful crispy outside with a steaming moist inside with leftovers that tasted nearly just as good the next day as a snack https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=qqVramTm5EAh4kuXIglKJQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw! This was an impressive meal https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=QI7pnubwFjZ-3sDgku4AAA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Mac 'N Cheese ($4.50): One of my all-time favorite dishes, I ordered this whenever and wherever I saw it on the menu. This was one magical elbow pasta mess of cheesiness, gooeyness, and quite filling as a meal on its own. Simplicity that warmed my heart and permanently left a smile on my face with every spoonful https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=q1VYTdy9WgGcSzs8xtYCbw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Coleslaw ($3.50): Not a big fan of coleslaw because I've eaten some terrible ones over the years which many seemed to be "soupy" that soaked in a pool of liquid mayonnaise. Thankfully, that wasn't the case here! The finely-shredded cabbage mixed with black pepper, red onion, and an extremely light touch of mayonnaise was a joy to eat with its crispness and just enough flavor - a thumbs-up https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=zDVGTM6drdus7r-mePzruA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Seasonal Lemonade ($3.50): Extra tart lemonade paired with greasy oily crackling fried chicken was just perfection, so I had to try this. Surprisingly, it actually tasted more like mango (a plus!) with a sediment of purely fine pulp. More sweet than tart, it wasn't the pairing I expected but still enjoyed nonetheless and curious about what the other seasonal options would be https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=cDGNiA4gw5ymiX07Wj2YwA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
SERVICE
Greeted by a young male, he quickly took my order as the only customer at the time. Through the window, I watched him carefully craft the sliders. About ten minutes later, my order was packaged and ready to go. Sadly, the two sides weren't included so I returned the next day in hopes of getting this resolved. I spoke with a young female, explained what had happened, she graciously apologized, and gave me a complimentary seasonal lemonade for my troubles along with the missing sides. They did the right thing!
PARKING (FREE)
They had a couple private parking spots. Otherwise, there was plenty of street parking along the main drags of Chevy Chase Blvd. and Glenoaks Blvd.. - 'nuff said.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
A shack with separate order and takeout windows https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=mC_WGXT_iiy5UA6Dj53pxg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, there was an easily legible menu https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=coCYWpQzEutTkYUcst5-xg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, and a covered outdoor dining patio area with several tables https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=xYdd0aL_j0afJLGQYg-XYA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Plenty of natural lighting obviously while some electric ceiling light filled in the rest. No TVs although I believed I heard background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=QnK1eopu10MjHNG8BRxibQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Chick Next Door was a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and would return at the very least to finish the menu which was extremely limited. And, it was always a pleasure to support a mom & pop small business. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $41.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS read more
