Hello 2023!!! Yes, I've come to my favorite franchise at the start of the year. Yes I love any Chick-Fil-A. Yes my reviews are biased. Always going to rate a 5 for any Chick-Fil-A. To be fair the 5 stars is for the consistency. Now you've read my prior reviews East Coast Chick-Fil-As aren't your down south happy all the time food spots but the food is always the same! For that reason they get a 5 star every time. Con about this location: the traffic in and out! Whoa! Other than that, staff is decent and you get at least one smile while you're there.

So here's what happened...I was researching fried chicken spots, I found one, I went to the spot, I…read moreordered their food, I got the food, I was skeptical, I ate it, and it exceeded my expectations!! Good people when I tell you that the Fried chicken at this establishment is delectable...STAMP THAT!! On my initial review of this place, @janess_backstage_kitchen , I took a bite out of the Halal chicken, and waffle, (pictured-$12) and I gave it the Big Schlim grade of DELICIOUS!! So I finished the review, and started pushing. While pushing, I kept dipping into the container with the chicken in it, taking bites. I did this so much so, that I got viciously honked at while stopped at a green light. I crushed that meal before I arrived at my next destination...and I wasn't even hungry!! That's some good a** chicken my good folks...please believe me...it's officially STAMPED!! So this spot is a licensed, black owned, startup establishment that I decided to give some go too...I'm super happy that I did. With curbside service only, Janess's has a very simple menu that includes shrimp and grits (pictured $12), Belgian Waffles, Halal fried chicken, hand cut Zentachi fries, and a house made mumbo sauce chicken combo that comes with a Belgian waffle. That's it. For now!! I also ordered their shrimp and grits (pictured-$12), that came in a container with enough room to feed 3. It smelled good, but aesthetically it didn't look that great. I took a bite and seemed it DECENT. But once again, I pulled off and I kept dipping!! So this one is officially DELICIOUS!! The more, and more i dipped into these meals, the better they got!! Customer service was excellent (these are some truly kind hearted folks good people), and online ordering is easy. Now In order to perfect your meal, they take their time. So add 30 mins to your pick up time. Online ordering was simple, and parking was available. Good people...trust me on this one...get the chicken, be patient, and enjoy. That's it. #bigschlimsreviews #blackowned #halalfriedchicken #shrimpandgrits #belgianwaffles #housemademumbo #deliciousness #goodeats #stamp #tryit #startup #thatsit

My grilled chicken was moist, flavorful, and cooked very well. The fried catfish was not too salty and had great balance where you can taste the fish. The mac and cheese, cabbage, and green beans were all of nice quality, the weakest link is the potato salad, however that is a dish that can be complicated for different restaurants to get the hang of, fortunately I can prepare some awesome potato salad myself. The peach half and half drinks were balanced perfectly well not too sugary and sweet. I swear some of these places make drinks way too sweet and you want to check your insulin levels. The server was highly attentive and a great conversationalist and paid attention to our wants and needs and had superb professionalism and a strong work ethic. He was hospitable and accommodating. The staff was friendly and approachable. We had fun and enjoyed this more than Milk and Honey and even Carolina Kitchen. DC keeps gentrifying and losing its soul, but there are still some hidden gems around. This spot blends in with the Walmart, and funnily enough I have driven past here a gazillion of times and assumed it was some bakery or another spot and did not know it was a soul food joint, something DC has been minimizing and pushing out to Maryland like the city always does. I think it is masterful that they use clear plastic containers for their food making it easier for the staff as that can be expensive and time consuming with the dish washing/prep, sound economical move. It is nice that the business (U Street etc. location) has been in the DMV for over 20 years and expanded to Baltimore in Fells Point. I think Baltimore will like this spot! This felt authentic and soulful in a way that I had not experienced in the city in quite some time, as the city has had a lot of restaurants be sterile, bland, flavorless, and catered to certain demographics while completely ignoring others. I liked the soundtrack with R&B and was able to hear some TLC on the soundtrack which was very nostalgic and a throwback to DC before the gentrification when it was truly Chocolate City! Overall, it is a spot that you can visit more than once certainly not a one and done like a lot of restaurants that lack service, food, and ambiance/vibe.

At that time, I was upset about what happened with George Floyd a week earlier; still in 2026, it was wrong what happened to Floyd (not to mention more recent news that happened in that city was horrible too). I hung out with a friend on that warm day having a beer outside his apartment in Takoma Park. He is a mega-leftist politically (I'm more independent), but said he wanted to support a black-owned business; I said that's a good idea; I might do that for dinner. He was doing his own thing for dinner, so I was on my own. So, I looked up on Yelp what was in the area, and I saw just across the border in DC, Oohh's & Aahh's. Staff was nice, and I got a fried chicken platter. As this was Covid times, there was no dine-in. So, I schlepped all the way straight up Georgia Ave 6 miles back to my home in Wheaton fairly quickly on that Sunday as I don't like my food getting cold. I think my food stayed pretty hot as it was well-wrapped, and if it had cooled off, I could always microwave at home. The fried chicken, mac n' cheese (my favorite vegetable...I know not really a veggie but a joke), etc. were all solid. If I was ever over here, I'd consider coming back; just so rare I go to DC these days.

Hey friends! This new spot went viral on TikTok. It looked absolutely delicious from the photos…read more It's also a black-woman business, my favorite kind of business to support! Mamma Tees is a southern, family-run kitchen. Their entrees come with two sides and cornbread or a roll. I ordered the jerk wings w/ green beans and mac. As well as, the fried wings w/ cabbage and mac. We enjoyed our meals! The mac had the perfect blend of cheese and was moist! The wings were fried and seasoned perfectly. Wasn't a big fan of the cabbage, it was bland. +Customer service was amazing. I wanted to highlight the family oriented vibe. I witnessed their regulars come in, greet everyone and start up conversations. It was beautiful to see. +Street parking out front +There are a few tables for dine-in. Understanding that service can be a tad slow as they are juggling the kitchen and front end. I highly suggest you order online. Our order took about 40 minutes but everything was made fresh on the spot and came out hot so I'll take that anyday. If they can fix the front end by hiring someone else I think things could be much better however her daughter was doing her best and she was super nice and friendly. The menu is small but the food packs a punch. I ordered almost everything on the menu as I was hungry and really wanted to give them a shot. I ordered the Cajun Salmon but also added Shrimp and Chicken for $40. This is not on the menu as an item as I combined the 3 they have into one. I also ordered the Fried chicken entree and chose Candid Gams and Teriyaki Green Beans for sides $22. Lastly I ordered the Fried whiting entree which for sides I chose Mac and cheese and green beans $22. Both entrees came with cornbread. The Cajun Salmon was seasoned EXTREMELY well and was filled with onions and peppers. There were Large shrimp, I wish the tail was off, a healthy piece of salmon and good chicken. It is a large portion as it filled the entire container. I couldn't stop eating it. The fried chicken entree with candid yams and teriyaki greens beans was good as well. Amazing candid yams. Made just like my wife's. Soft, sweets and mouth watering good. Yum yum yum. The fried chicken was great. Seasoned well. Crispy and juicy. They weren't up to the chef's liking as they were a little darker than normal so they tossed in another 3 on the side. Both sets were good for me. The green beans were good. Couldn't really taste the teriyaki but good nonetheless less. The fried whiting was good as well. I love that the lid had wholes poked so that my fish wouldn't be wet by the time I got home. Instead the fish was nice and crispy. The Mac and cheese was old school Mac and cheese. It was ok. The collard greens were your mommas collard greens. Just how you'd expect. The cornbread's for both dinners was soft, and tasty. Overall I'll absolutely be back. This might be a regular once a month stop for me. The food is GREAT! Soulful for sure. Momma Tee can cook. The service is great and now that I know to order in advance I won't have to wait nearly as long. They definitely have a returning customer in me. Go go go in you're nearby.
