This is definitely not a Chinese hot pot restaurant. The head cook and bottle washer (I'm not…read morekidding!) didn't even know what a hot pot was, even though they've owned the place for years. I'm surprised that they didn't change the name. She told me that someone else had stopped recently thinking that it was a Chinese place. Seeing the pumpkin pie under Desserts on the sign as I entered was a clue. I thought "oh, what the heck!", and she said that she'd bring a menu to me in just a moment. There was only one person seated in the restaurant but it was possibly too early for many people. After a short delay, she arrived with the menu and asked what I wanted to drink. I ordered a sweet tea. Perusing the menu, I thought I'd try the meatloaf sandwich. That sounded like something typically Indiana. She was out of meatloaf. (As I learnt later, the walk-in cooler had been repaired but she had thrown out possibly spoiled food and was waiting for the cooler to become cooler.) I ordered the fish tail sandwich. Rather than just have a little rectangle mostly hidden by the bun, this was long enough to be seen quite well on each end. I bit off one end before taking the photo, so sorry about that. I also ordered seasoned fries. It took a little while, and a couple entered, so the woman in charge of it all had to multi-task. I wonder what happens if she's really busy. The food was good, although the seasoned fries could have used more seasoning. They seemed to have a layer of breading with mild paprika, when they should have had a mix of mild and spicy paprika. The food was prepared as well as you could expect, and it was obvious that she cared. She and her husband took time to talk, which was quite pleasant. They weren't intrusive but they seemed genuinely interested. She was definitely interested in what a hot pot was. Being between Quizno's and Mancino's, someone might miss the place, especially with the McDonald's drive-thru line into 30th Street. Shouldn't it wind in front of Kroger's instead? Geez. Of course, people could just avoid McDonald's and go to The Hot Pot Restaurant. Update 2013.09.24: I was in Connersville photographing cross country and stopped ahead of time. The fact that I was trying to host an event here would need more than a 24-hour call ahead. The reservation for my party was simply a sticky note on the wall behind the cash register. When I arrived 30 minutes early to be able to look out for and greet people as they came, nothing had been set up in advance. I sensed they were waiting to see if we actually showed up. To me, a group of 22 paying customers would be treated more professionally, but it was what it was. The service and food were okay, but the real fiasco occurred when they came to put the sombrero on me and sing in celebration of my birthday. I had seen this before and had really not wanted it, but I forgot to mention my decline and figured I would just go with it and get it over with. I was not expecting to be sternly sat down and have my bearded face smeared with whipped cream. They clearly do not realize this is an act of assault! No one has the right to put their hands on you in an offensive manner. I was absolutely furious and in a state of shock. My love of this restaurant and desire to go back absolutely died in that moment. I really thought I was doing something very good for the establishment by bringing in a group of 22 people. But instead of being treated with honor and respect, I was sharply told to sit down to be put on display and have my entire face slathered with whipped cream. No one in my party, with the exception of one, was amused. Everyone in attendance, being from this area, will most likely be deterred from future visits. I am all for celebration and having a good time, but this was way too extreme. It went too far and was a complete violation of my boundaries, ruining my birthday celebration. One of my group recounted that she had been at El Bronco West during a lunchtime visit and witnessed a woman being assaulted with whipped cream, which smeared and ruined her makeup. Being at work for the day and having yourself desecrated is an act of violence. My guest noted that she, too, was furious. This proves my point that this restaurant prefers its sophomoric pranks over the sensitivities of its customers. Afterward, I spoke to our waiter and told him how angry I was and that this was too extreme. The waiter apologized, but it was too late; the damage had already been done. He did say he would tell the manager, but two days after the event, I have heard nothing. My memory of my special occasion is scarred in ruin! I will never return to this restaurant again! This establishment is clearly out of touch with its clientele. Be forewarned, if you plan to spend a special occasion at El Bronco, tell them no singing unless you wish to have your face slathered with cream. The cole slaw is mayo-based instead of vinegar as she was hoping. Her chips, while to their credit were freshly made, were not completely finished as several of them were still raw. She said there was no buffalo flavor to her chicken and it just tasted blah. On top of that, she felt miserable the rest of the day, so we're questioning the handling of the chicken. OVERALL: -Only initial hiccup was where we were seated, so I would have leaned more towards a 4.5 star review. After learning about the multiple issues with my daughter's experience, would probably lean more 3.5 for our family as a whole. Bottom line, would return and order the pretzel, pizza, and other sandwiches, but stay away from the chicken options and perhaps make sure they finish preparing the chips if you get them.

I also would have preferred traditional egg noodles instead of the wider white noodles used here. One thing I would have liked to see was more vegetables. There was certainly no shortage of carbs--I ended up with both rice and noodles left over. The small bowl of broth was tasty, but I'm not used to having rice soaking in it. Personally, I would have preferred vegetables as a substitute for the rice since the dish already came with plenty of carbs.
