What a cute little drive-in! I feel a bit of nostalgia driving up, parking and pushing the button to make my order. Today I chose to have chicken tenders, cheese cubes and a strawberry shake. The chicken tenders were all white meat seasoned and breaded. They came in a order of four. I had never heard of cheese cubes so I had to try. They are not cheese curds. These gems were cheddar cubes seasoned and fried goodness. I would definitely order those again. Lastly the cool strawberry shake was a perfect sweet ending to my lunch time meal. read more

BEST ONION RINGS in INDIANA!!! My dad snd I ate here on a beautiful sunny Sat afternoon that made dining in the care pitch perfect. I had a single burger w/bacon & all fixings but cheese which was great! The pickles & onions are true slices and not just little diced chips which makes for a great burger. I had onion rings as my side and was in heaven with every bite. I washed my food down with a vanilla coke, the perfect drive-in beverage. My dad had the pork barbecue sandwich which he found to be particularly good and meat filled. He is pretty much of a barbecue expert since he orders one everywhere that serves them. He said this was one of the better sandwiches he has had recently. He had fries as his side, and in true old style fashion they were good crinkle fries. Everything was great with the quick service and food. I only found one minor thing disappointing and it was the food served in a sack. I was excited and looking forward to my silver tray on my window like drive-ins have always used throughout history??? I am not sure why they are using the speakers, car hops and no trays to complete the whole experience? If you are near East Central Indiana this drive-in is a must! read more

Kunkel's has been in operation since 1955, and to my knowledge, it's only changed hands once (from the Kunkel family to the Cartwright family about a decade ago). The name, the iconic neon sign, the drive-in style setup with the speaker boxes at each parking space... all that is still in tact. And from the vast majority of Kunkelers, the food has stayed consistent over the years as well. Yes, the prices have raised, but I don't think the place could stay in operation still charging 25 cents for a cheeseburger. The eponymous Kunkelburger is similar to a Big Boy or a Big Mac (oh, shame) - two hamburger patties with cheese, lettuce and tartar sauce on a double decker bun. That and the K-Loin sandwich (a breaded, fried pork tenderloin the size of your head) are the two biggest sellers, as are the drinks, flavored to your liking at no extra charge (I recommend the vanilla Sprite or the chocolate-cherry Coke). Kunkel's makes much of its food on-site. The cole slaw, potato salad, most of the pies (including the famous strawberry pie, served only from April to September) and soups, the Hand-Breaded (a.k.a. Homemade) Tenderloin (one of my favorites) and the coffee cake, which is a divine little-known secret left over from the days when Kunkel's served breakfast - all of those are made fresh right there in the kitchen. There's also a Wednesday Beef Manhattan lunch special - the beef is tender and the gravy can't be beat. They also hand-dip and flavor their milkshakes, which are simply ice cream, milk and goodness. Remember that this is a drive-in, so it's not exactly gourmet. Things get battered and fried here, and the smell wafts through the parking lot. For the prices, the indulgence and the trip down memory lane, it's totally worth the visit. read more

Another classic Indiana drive-in. If only we still had more drive-in theaters. Kunkel's is famous for it's hand breaded Hoosier pork tenderloins. This isn't a giant tenderloin, and it's fried in bread crumbs. It even has maybe a slight cinnamon taste? In any event, it's pretty juicy and has a nice crunch. It sort of splits the difference between the really thick monster tenderloins and the super thin ones. All in all a pretty good sandwich--though I prefer the thicker ones. The onion rings were pretty good, too. Same coating as the tenderloin. It sort of falls off the ring like the kind they used to serve at Damon's. The strawberry pie, though vaunted on their sign, was a bit disappointing. I expected Indiana berries! Still worth a stop. read more

I wouldn't go here for the food. I had the K-loin special, onion rings, and a cup of chili. My wife had the chicken salad. Everything was below par except for the chili which was halfway acceptable. The diner/drive-in atmosphere is the only thing that would bring you to this place. If it hadn't been fir a car show there today, I wouldn't have gone. I won't be back. read more

Kunkel's is interesting in the fact they are an old school "drive in" but the food is lack luster. I ordered a Double Kunkel Burger, Onion Rings, and a Large Chocolate Shake. Grand total of $14 and change. The onion rings were obliterated in the bag. It looked like they had literally been sat on. They also aren't seasoned whatsoever. If they had been, I wouldn't have been so bummed they were squished. The shake wasn't good either. It had a cheap chocolate candy flavor. The burger was actually very good and just what I had hoped it would be. Very much like a Frisch's Big Boy. The person taking the order wasn't friendly but the lady who brought out my food was lovely and polite. Overall, it's extremely overpriced for what you get and the drive in experience wasn't anything to brag about. I wouldn't come here again. read more

5 stars? Yep, it's a 5 star drive in, no doubt about it in my book. The help was amazing. My wife and I had never been here before, and came on the recommendation of a dear friend. I had a couple of questions about the menu, and our server knew what she was talking about. The hand breaded tenderloin, while not the very best one I've ever had, was well above average and the size was right. It wasn't huge, it wasn't tiny...just...right. I gotta say a word about the onion rings. Those things are amazing. If you're a fan of onion rings, get them. Seriously. They're tops. Oh Kunkel's you've stayed tried and true through the years and never have disappointed! Located right on the main drag through town Kunkels is your typical local drive-in but hasn't sold out. They have the food come right to your car or you can sit inside. The famous Kunkel burger is like a Big Mac but wayy better. the hand made milk shakes are fantastic and the home made pies are to die for! (try the peanut butter if they have it, trust me) The service here is usually pretty good and quick. Oh and the onion rings here are too legit to quit read more

Love the cheese cubes here! So so good! The cheese isn't chewy which I like! Also the tenderloins are good but they are also a hit or miss. Sometimes they are really thin and other times really thick. Also I feel like sometimes the tenderloins kind of a have a porky taste which I don't like. Maybe if your employees cared more about getting a customer's order right than gossip it wouldn't be so bad. Instead there are rude teenagers being mouthy with a customer for receiving a messed up order and refusing to give people their money back when they didn't even touch the food. Absolute waste of $20, time, and gas. I will never return. I refuse to pay for wrong food and to be treated like a dog. No thanks. Doesn't even deserve 1 star. What a shame. This business has been here my entire life and now I look for it to be just one more thing to go out of business in Connersville. read more

Okay, just stopped here for dinner, Saturday evening, not too crowded. Anyway, we were extremely hungry as we hadn't eaten since 7:00 a.m. and the time here is 5:30. I read on a review that the cheeseburgers were great, well that person had to have been more hungry than I was, it was shy of being qualified as average. I also ordered the fried mushrooms which were also below average, a bit too doughy. My husband ordered the breaded tenderloin and onion rings. The tenderloin, he said, was very good but the onion rings, not so much; in fact, he just threw half of them away. While I'm sure this place is decent for this area, I wouldn't go out of my way for the food. We decided to pass on the dessert and see if there might be a better choice up the road. read more

We were in town for the Polar Express train ride and read the reviews of this drive-in here on Yelp which led us to try it. And we certainly were not let down. Really enjoyed the food (we got that special Kunkel's burger, yum!). It's the typical drive-in style food but good quality and great service. We got our food within 5-7 min of ordering and the waiter was very friendly. We'll definitely go back next year during the Polar Express ride and likely make it a tradition to stop at Kunkel's afterwards. read more

Not a good day for our curbside order. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger with mustard only, onion rings, and a cup of chili. Onion rings and burger were cold. We pushed the call button and let them know and they came out and picked the food up. They returned with a kunkel burger instead of a bacon cheeseburger. So we returned that. They came back with a bacon cheeseburger, however, it was also cold. In addition, the chili was deparately in need of salt and I am not an over user of salt. In fact, the chili seems different than the last time I had it. The one positive, they gave us a coupon for a future, free kunkelburger and drink. read more

My husband and I visited Kunkel's Drive In today while enjoying a beautiful summer's day on our motorcycle. The first time for both of us, my husband had the BBQ pork sandwich basket and I had the tenderloin sandwich basket. Each of our baskets came with coleslaw: OMG !! It was creamy, crisp and cold with just the right bit of sweetness. Also, each of our baskets had French fries, which were the fattest crinkle cut fries that I have ever seen, and they tasted so good! My husband's BBQ sandwich was of decent proportion compared to my tenderloin which was a very nice size. It was actually more of a sandwich than I could eat so he helped me out :) The BBQ had a great flavor to it, and the pork was pulled nice and fine and was quite tender. My tenderloin was breaded beautifully and seasoned perfectly! To our amazement we made room for desert, we just had to try the strawberry pie (we added a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the top). .. The strawberry pie, was the best strawberry pie that we have ever tasted! The crust was amazing, the strawberries were nice and fresh: quite large actually. *** So very happy that we stopped in at Kunkel's Drive In! Kunkel's has now made it to our list of places to visit each summer .. & make sure our family and friends are told about this incredible place!!
