I wish I could give this five extra stars…read more The food was hands-down amazing. Those biscuits or something to write home about, and the fried chicken was perfection! The staff are the friendliest I've ever seen. Everyone literally looks delighted to be at their job jobs.

Sometimes the most frustrating restaurant experiences aren't the terrible ones…read more They're the ones that are so close to being really good. That's how I felt about Mama's Chicken Kitchen. I came in with high expectations. The restaurant has strong reviews, it's part of the Johnson Family of restaurants, and I've enjoyed several of their other establishments over the years. So I walked in expecting a meal that would have me planning a return visit before I even paid the check. What I got instead was one of the strangest cases of missing seasoning I've encountered in quite some time. Let's start with the positives. The people here are genuinely nice. Friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and seemed to care about providing a good experience. The restaurant itself is clean, comfortable, and inviting. And the kitchen clearly knows how to cook food. The fried chicken was cooked beautifully. Crispy on the outside. Juicy on the inside. Exactly the texture you're hoping for when you order Southern fried chicken. The problem? The seasoning apparently called in sick. This chicken had all the flavor intensity of a weather report. No noticeable salt. No spice. No personality. It tasted like the chef had just completed community service at a nursing home and was legally prohibited from possessing a salt shaker. My piece of chicken was juicy and cooked properly. Unfortunately, my wife's chicken breast was noticeably dry, which didn't help matters. Then came the fried pickles. No seasoning. Chicken and dumplings. No seasoning. Coleslaw. Tasteless. At one point I started wondering if there had been some sort of building-wide seasoning shortage that nobody had told us about. The frustrating part is that none of the food was poorly cooked. Quite the opposite. The techniques were there. The textures were there. The execution was there. It just felt like someone got everything ready and forgot the final, critical step of making the food taste like something. This is a restaurant with good people, a pleasant atmosphere, and a kitchen that clearly knows how to cook. Now they just need to introduce their food to salt, pepper, and a few of their seasoning friends. Three stars. Because the potential is absolutely there. The flavor just never showed up for work.

Part of the dining area. There is many more tables not in view and there is a screened-in seating area as well.

So, we came to this location. We walked in & the restaurant was clean & smelled great. The staff was all so friendly! We walked up to the register & I told Millie & Nicole the reason we were there. They didn't act like we were crazy at all! Then, I asked the shift leader Cruz if he could help us figure out a good deal for 6 people so we could just try the chicken and he went above & beyond to help us out. The chicken was fresh & hot. The skin on the chicken was crisp. It didn't leave grease dripping all over your hands like most fried chicken. (Which is gross & one of the reasons I don't like to eat fried chicken). It was moist & juicy! Honestly, this was the BEST fried chicken we have ever had at a restaurant chain! If it tasted this good in San Antonio, Texas we'd eat it more often but trust me.... I haven't found one that does yet. However, we aren't big fans of fast food to begin with. This was definitely a pleasant surprise! Oh! The cookies are yummy too! Thank you Cruz & Millie!

Second trip through ordered 2 identical combos same sides same drinks. Did not get biscuits or sauces. Pulled back around and asked for biscuits and sauces that I paid for and they acted like I was robbing the place. Food was not terrible but biscuits were hard both times like they had set under a warmer all day. Potatoes and fries were ice cold but nuggets were fresh and scalding hot - too hot to eat for several minutes. At least they were fresh I guess. Price has definitely gone up. Over $30 bucks for 2 nuggets combos is steep.

First time couple weeks ago…read more Stopped after golf with 2 friends on a Saturday about 5 pm. Busy with 45 min wait but were told we could wait in the separate bar with first come basis seating. That's what we did and got seated and drinks ordered and dinner menus promptly, Bar /wait staff was very good for a busy time. Live music and crowd in the bar in a living room type atmosphere too loud for an intimate dinner more a sing along fun time place, separate from the main more quiet dining area. Got fried mushrooms appetizer and filet mignon as entree. The filet was high quality very tender perfectly prepared and had a wood grilled flavor. Also got a fresh garden salad and giant baked potato ...excellent well worth the $48 price. Others had a huge burger and cheese steak with fries. Both also very good. Too stuffed for desert but it looked yummy. Was impressed with bar drinks, beer and wine selections. Best steak I've had in this area from Lexington Ky to Knoxville TN. On par with nineteen 19 in Cumberland gap as nicest restaurant in the local area. I'll be back.
