I ordered birria beef tacos and was surprised by what I received. Not sure if this is common to this area or a Lucky's interpretation: cheese is melted onto the outside of a flour shell, birria meat is placed mid-shell w/crema over top. It was tasty. Just very confusing because that isn't what I think of when I think Taco. Overtired and very confused and our waiter really handled it so well. Aside from my taco turmoil my Caeser salad was very tasty and fresh. My dining companion had a half Reuben and chili. The Reuben also was different from our accustomed 'build'. Shredded meat was mixed with dressing (vs thin sliced with saurkraut on top and thousand island dressing as a condiment). We are so far away from home we have no idea is this the ND way? Or the chef's interpretation? No worries. This is a knife and fork sandwich for sure. The chili is topped with Frito cornchips and cheese melted over all. A filling meal. It's happened time and time again - the most recent being just last month, when on the road finishing out visiting all 50 US States. ND was my 50th. Anyway, while in Bismarck, stopped off at Landers and had a great experience. It was a simple lunch - An Italian sub and a cup of soup. Tossed in chips and a salad too. Getting ahead of myself. It's in the building of a gas station. One side is the convenience store the other is Landers. Counter where your food is made to order and seating. It's not table service - walk up to the counter, order and find a seat. Your food will be brought to you. When you're done, head to register to pay the bill. It's not easy to capture how tasty my meal was with words. But as I've said a countless number of times, if our tastes align, you'll love this place. Everything from the bun, to the soup and chips. I devoured it all leaving the salad for my friend. I especially enjoyed how the sub's ingredients were evenly loaded. Had a taste of it all in every bite. Unlike other experiences where it's all lettuce or the sauce is overpowering. The chips weren't too greasy or salty and the soup was just tied everything together. Obviously I'm not a regular but I know if I lived in the area, I would be and then some. Definitely the duke. If you're in the area, it's definitely a must.

Also the hours are 10am-3pm, which are much shorter than the gas station hours (I only know because I came back the next day lol). The deli has everything made to order so it's as fresh as it gets! They brought the food to me at the table and quickly realized that it was way too much food. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it all. That wouldn't necessarily be a dealbreaker if the food made up for it, but unfortunately it didn't. My wife and I shared the Ribs and Side Pieces. The ribs tasted okay, but they had considerably more fat and less meat than I prefer. The fries were similarly unremarkable--perfectly edible, but nothing I'd go back for. What really bothered me was the cleanliness. The bathroom was dirty. A friend of mine who owns several restaurants once told me that he considers the condition of a restaurant's bathroom a useful clue to how seriously management takes cleanliness in areas customers can't see. Fair or not, that thought was difficult to shake after seeing this one. More concerning: a few hours after our shared lunch, both my wife and I became sick. Obviously, I can't establish that the restaurant caused it, and I'm not claiming that it did. But given that we ate the same meal and both developed symptoms afterward, it's something I think is worth mentioning. Between the dingy atmosphere, dirty bathroom, mediocre food, and our unfortunate experience later that day, two stars feels generous.
