This crushes my soul to be writing this review. But I went to Chicago #1 for the last time, last night. I have been a regular customer here for about 20 years. Even through COVID I made sure to go there once a week (spending $70-$80 on average as I have 5 kids) to make sure Joe was not going to become a victim of the intentional destruction of our economy. When he sold the place I was sad because I was going to miss our regular interactions and simple banter. It was like losing a family member. At first the new owners did their best to carry on the traditions and flavors that Joe had created but slowly it had been going down hill. I always rooted for the underdog and let a lot of issues pass, like being out of this, that or another thing, as I truly wanted them to succeed in Joe's footprints. But after last night I can no longer give them my money to serve the slop that I received for $70 including tip. My order consisted of two #7 (beef sandwich) one had fries and one was just the sandwich, two #1 (gyros) with fries and a #10 Chicago Dog without fries for which the order taker asked if I wanted everything on it. To which I replied it is not a Chicago Dog if it doesn't have everything on it. What I got for my $70 was the most disgusting excuse for a hot dog (definitely not a Vienna Beef hot dog...it was dark brown and about 3/8" in diameter). On the first bite I almost spit it out. The only way I could force it down was the condiments on it and I was starving. The beef sandwiches looked almost fake (i did not have one) and again definitely not Vienna beef. And the gyro was not up to snuff. It had a single slice of tomato, a little bit of onion and a runny, tastless tatziki sauce that was sad. The only thing that was good was the gyro meat and the pita. So again...that is/was the last time I will be eating there. RIP Chicgo #1. We had a good run together but it is time to find a new gyro place or open my own. read more

I found this place on yelp. While it had both good and bad reviews, I decided to give it a try anyway because I was hungry for a gyro. Everything started off good, the girl at the counter was very nice, I placed my order to go and sat down to wait. It was done pretty quickly. When getting the bag I asked if I could have some extra sauce because I know places like to skimp, I was told they charge for it. Hmmm, oh well ok, I went ahead and got one, 2.00 after tax for one tiny little cup and I mean tiny. Got home and started to eat, so glad I got the extra sauce because it was very minimal and at the very bottom of the sandwich. I've been craving a good gyro for a while now and haven't really found one in the East Valley that hits the spot--until now. I'd heard about Chicago #1 Gyros in AJ, and one day while I was nearby I decided to finally stop in and grab something to go for lunch. The place was pretty quiet (midday during the week), but I was greeted right away with a friendly welcome. They were super accommodating to my special request to have the meat grilled after slicing, and I only waited a few minutes before my order was ready. I just went with the gyro sandwich (no fries), and let me tell you--it tasted exactly like I remembered a great gyro should. The pita was soft and fresh, the portion was generous and fully stuffed with meat (which is what really counts!), and everything was hot and flavorful. If I had to nitpick, I'd say I could've used just a little more tzatziki and toppings, but overall it was delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu next time. This place used to be great, but my recent lunch visit with a few coworkers was a huge disappointment. After reading other reviews, it seems they may have new owners, and unfortunately, it shows. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich because I remembered it being hearty and satisfying. This time, it came on a tiny hoagie roll with very little meat or toppings. The bread had the texture of being microwaved, and the fries were undercooked. The pricing was also frustrating. They charge $3.25 for a bottled soda, then argued over what size cup I was allowed to use with it. If I wanted a larger cup, they wanted to charge extra. On top of that, I was charged $0.75 for a side of ranch to go with my fries. My friend ordered the falafel plate and only managed a few bites of the salad, rice, and falafel before giving up. She said the entire plate tasted as though it had been heavily sprinkled with cayenne pepper, making it far too spicy to enjoy. It's a shame to see how much this place has declined. Didn't know the place had changed hands. Saying the owners "skimp" is an understatement! When we were there, they charged for everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. $2.00 for a teensy-weensy cup of some sauce sounds awfully familiar. I only like their gyro meat and baba ganoush. Portions are very small. Especially for the price. But I go back when I want baba ganoush. The counter guy has some kind of attitude. Whenever I ordered something he would say "I'm sorry what was that?" On more than one occasion like I don't speak English or something. I don't have an accent at all. So what I say gyro like geero or sometimes heero or even yeero. I asked a Greek man once and he said all are acceptable.
