Hoop it, mama!
I am ALL for strong, athletic women making it in the world, and showing it off. The WNBA is a shining example for young (and old) women/girls that powerful, confident and driven is super sweet....so that is an automatic win with yours truly, even though my WNBA dreams were crushed in high school when I learned point guards are about my height. Yeah, I ain't no ball handla', mmmmmk? ;)
Despite not having multi-million dollar shoe deals or contracts, these girls hit the court hard, play for the love of the game, and make the fans happy. It's actually pretty inspiring...if we took away bloated salaries and ritzy lifestyles from the big boys in the NBA, would they all stick around? An interesting thought...methinks, some would opt out...
Regardless...Sky tickets are much easier to come by, the experience much easier to stomach, and the fan base more genuine. If you've got a daughter, sister, mother...bring 'em.
Toting an 11-year old girl here was absolutely a great decision, and a good reminder (first glance?) that female athletes can be pretty awesome, too....and that competition isn't just for the boys. Is it slower than the NBA? Of course. But, I didn't see one whiney, bitchy manchild screaming at a referee, or any coaches chucking chairs. Bonus? Yes, I'd think so. Intensity is one thing, straight up ill-behaved morons is another. Ain't none in sight with the Sky. Yay!
SO, as for the logistics...
Good:
-UIC Pavilion is clean, easily accessible, and large.
Bad:
-They don't fill it. The tickets are way out of bounds for the majority of the demographic that would enjoy this. Sky, you are not the Bulls. Fill the seats, make it fun, and figure it out. 50 percent of seats empty is bad for business, bad for morale. Marketing 101, give 'em away until people are hooked. Seriously.
-Parking is $13. Eh. really? The blue line is walking distance, however. (UIC-Racine)
Good:
-Girl Power.
Bad:
-Nothing bad about that, c'mon :)
All in all, time well spent. I recommend to anyone looking for something a bit off the beaten path...passion is priceless, and these chicks have it. No lie.
Plus, they give away noisemakers, have lots of games for the kids, sign-making stations, and of course the obligatory $9 nachos and $5 cokes...just in case you were missing that from the big stadiums ;) read more
