The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the all-time great hockey teams. I guess you can say that about all of the Original Six of which the Blackhawks are one. The Blackhawks are top-five in the NHL in both total number of Stanley Cup championships won (6) and total number of Stanley Cup Finals appearances (13). While historic franchises like the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs have won more Stanley Cup championships than the Blackhawks, the Blackhawks have continued to win championships well into the 21st century. That's something neither the Canadiens nor Maple Leafs can say with those teams' last titles occurring in 1993 and 1967, respectively. Members of the Arthur Wirtz family have been principal owners of the Blackhawks franchise since 1966. The franchise had won three Stanley Cup championships - 1934, 1938, and 1961 - prior to Arthur Wirtz becoming the lead partner. Chicago wouldn't win a Stanley Cup again until Arthur's grandson Rocky assumed control in 2007. They've since won the Cup three times: 2010, 2013, and 2015. Unlike his frugal father, "Dollar" Bill, Rocky spent a lot of money to rebuild and market the franchise, promoting a new culture while still honoring its past. It paid off. Current general manager Stan Bowman (who joined in 2009) and former head coach Joel Quenneville (2008-2018) oversaw the Blackhawks' three Stanley Cup victories in the 2010s. The captain on all three of those teams is current captain, "Captain Serious," Jonathan Toews. Toews was drafted by Chicago with the third overall pick in the 2006 draft. At age 20, he was named team captain heading into the 2008-09 season. At the time, he was the second-youngest captain in league history. Toews won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010 (playoffs MVP) with Patrick Kane (2013) and Duncan Keith (2015) following suit. Toews, Kane, and Keith won three Stanley Cups together and are still teammates today; the Blackhawks' Big Three. Like Toews, Kane and Keith were drafted by Chicago too. Kane in 2007 (No. 1 overall pick) and Keith in 2002 (No. 54). All three players rank in the top 10 among team leaders in points and assists in both the regular season and playoffs. Toews and Kane are also in the top 10 in goals. The Big Three are now past their prime. LET'S GO HAWKS! LET'S GO HAWKS! From the moment we arrived we were caught up in the FANdemonium, as the spirit of the United Center catches you quickly. The food and drink lines were all pretty reasonable, considering we arrived minutes before puck drop. The scoreboard is amazing and except for the extremely drunk guy behind us who fell on the lady next to me and spilled beer on us, it was the typical great Blackhawks game experience I've come to know. I often try to find first row of a section, center ice, to get a good view. The hot dogs here always taste so good but we've eaten in the club before a game too. Great food, just very pricey, of course. Now if we can just figure out a way to eliminate the long lines for the ladies restroom...Please, if anyone has a tip for the section at the United Center with the shortest lines for the ladies, please share! read more

Just need to vent...Is anyone else frustrated with trying to find a way to watch the Blackhawks? This smells so much like Bill Wirtz is isn't funny. And it was important to me to get him here while the nucleus of future HOFers and 3-time Stanley Cup Champions were still on ice. He got to see Kane, Toews, Keith and Crawford..four staples..the core of both. Great game, we got to see them beat Anaheim 6-3 on a flurry of second-period goals. Our seats were nosebleed but that's what I chose to pay for. Demand is still high to see the Hawks, even when they're in last place. A Hawks game is a good time no matter when you go see them. The pregame cheering during the Nation Anthem is a bucket list item for any sports enthusiast, and this is as iconic of a hockey club as any in the league. I had SO MUCH FUN attending my first Hawks game! One of my grad alumnae locations did an outing here and it was a total blast. The game was so much fun and there's not a bad seat in the house. (Honestly I was the literal LAST seat up in the nosebleeds and still had a great view and lots of fun.) I was also among the first 10,000 people to enter the arena, so I managed to score an awesome Hawks scarf. The food here is also terrific--best food I've had at an athletic event! I highly recommend getting the BBQ pulled pork and a Goose Island beer. Fries are overkill. As a heads up, bring your own fork if you want to use one. read more

I am rating the Blackhawks this because of the problems with Ticketmaster. I am out over $500 for 2 tickets because of the12/23 game being rescheduled. My active duty SIL went home for Christmas to Chicago on leave so I bought tickets for him and my daughter. They live in California so there is NO POSSIBLE WAY THEY CAN GO TO ANOTHER GAME but Ticketmaster won't refund me. Even though I used the Ticketmaster system to buy tickets. HOW GREEDY CAN YOU BE?!! While you really can't review the Blackhawks record at any one time, you can review the show they put on...and the Blackhawks organization has this thing down pat. Great organization and it is hard to compare with how far they have come. I grew up in the day of owner Arthur Wirtz and his son Bill Wirtz who refused to broadcast the games on TV unless the house - Chicago Stadium - was sold out and the broadcast would be national. Eventually management of the team was transferred to Arthur's grandson Rocky Wirtz who immediately changed that...televising all the games. The result...the Blackhawks exploded on the scene. The other major change to Rocky Wirtz's credit was the stealing away of John McDonough from the Cubs. Together Wirtz and McDonough put on a great production from start to finish. There are light shows in the arena and the food offerings have been upgraded to make it a much more customer friendly experience, the team has been revitalized and they spend what is needed to attract the right talent, they have invested heavily in the feeder leagues - and the result...the Blackhawks have won 3 Stanley Cups and remain competitive each year...and keep in mind the new management has done all this in ten short years. All-in-all a great experience. This was our first Blackhawks game at the United Center and we will be back. Highly recommended experience for one and all...kids and seniors will also have a great time. read more

Unpopular opinion: hockey is the worst of the major sports. Don't @ me. I learned the game of hockey by playing Blades of Steel on Nintendo as a child. And then some others. I even owned a Chris Chelios jersey, and attended one game LONG before Blackhawks tickets were a hot commodity. See? I hockey gud. Since their championship window is all but closed, attendance numbers will dwindle because wypipo will have found somewhere else to party. We know all the stats, we know the players, we know the score! But what I didn't know... So, I'm reading about Vegas getting a team and also researching Abraham Lincoln and then, a few web-links later, there I am thinking about why it is that I love hockey and it's because this kid I grew up with - Brian F. - was a hockey player at our local rink. I didn't have a crush on him or anything; it was quite the opposite - I was a tomboy and he was my best friend. He was not only a fierce hockey player, he was all-around a true fighter. I'll never forget the day that a crowd was gathered in the street as mom and I were driving home and only a few hours later did I learn that Brian was hit by a car and had a pretty good head injury. Everyone was nervous and fearing the worst but I harkened back to the memory of a giant stuffed Snoopy dog and a game of tug-of-war. Brian and I were on the twin bed in the basement (his brother's room, complete with life-size Elvis poster, lava lamp and rectangular fish tank.) I had Snoopy's feet and Brian had Snoopy's head and we were deep in this struggle. Knowing that neither side could win this thing, I did the only thing I could think of...I let go. And that fierce fighter Brian F. flew backward and sideways, his head smashing into the broadside of the fish tank. Seeing Brian nearly knocked unconscious and now with fish and water gushing out all over the floor, I was momentarily stunned at the scene. Just by letting go, I'd caused this chaos. (As kids, of course, you are freaking out about "who did this!?" and I could hear his father storming down the stairs yelling, "what's going on in there?") I'd have to bleep out most of what Mr. F. said after that but I recall distinctly his concern for getting that blue bucket and plucking the fish to safety while he was bleeping right along. Mr. F. didn't seem too worried about Brian who was choking back tears while taking a massive verbal scolding. Thankfully, Brian was fine. And ultimately, Brian was fine again....with a nasty shaved-spot on his head and giant scar when I saw him a month after the car accident. I held out to him one of those huge bright yellow and multi-colored-swirled suckers on a big wooden stick. No, I didn't want to count the Frankenstein-looking stitches on his exposed scalp. Brian eventually went back to playing hockey as usual. So, I grew up watching Black Hawks' hockey over at Brian's house. (My household was football/baseball.) I loved school but I always hated history class. Hated it! Only this many years later have I learned that Abraham Lincoln served as a captain in the Illinois Militia during the Black Hawk War - a war named for "Black Hawk," a war leader/warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe. (Interesting fact - when Black Hawk was briefly imprisoned in 1832, he told his story to an interpreter and, later, aided by a newspaper reporter, he published an autobiography - the first Native American autobiography to be published in the United States.) But this goes way back - Black Hawk was born in 1767...how did our hockey team come by this name? The team's first owner, Frederic McLaughlin, was commander with the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry during WWI. That battalion was nicknamed, 'Black Hawk Division" and McLaughlin named his hockey team in honor of that military unit. Up until 1986, the team was spelled out "Black Hawk." The Hawks have won six Stanley Cups since their founding in 1926 and they are one of the "Original Six" NHL teams. Before the Blackhawks saved me, I was lost a lost sheep in the wilderness. I was a wandering soul before they came into my heart when I moved into their city. It was almost biblical. An epiphany. See, I was raised in the Detroit area. However, I knew from an early age that I hated the great Satan that is the Red Wings. I hated their buy a championship ways. However, I loved hockey like any other good Michigan boy did. I looked for other teams to try and support. I eventually settled on being a Rangers fan because they had a goalie who was the U.S. national team goalie and a big defenseman named Jeff Beukeboom (still the most fitting name in hockey history). When they won the 1994 Stanley Cup, I was on cloud nine. But there was still something missing. I wasn't a part of it from many states away. Then I moved to Chicago in 1999. And, it all made sense. I hated the Red Wings. The few Blackhawks fans that still existed around me, driven away by many decades of bad ownership and lack of television rights, hated the Red Wings with an equal fervor. And, therefore, a Blackhawks fan was made! The very first night I moved to Chicago, my ex-girlfriend Amber, two friends, and I went to the United Center and watched the Blackhawks lose to the Rangers! The rest is history. I switched teams that night. Or, well, the next day. Or, well, soon after. Okay, fine. I admit that I am sort of a bandwagon fan of their recent incarnation (starting in about 2006 after vaguely following them for seven years) and a tiny piece of me still looks for a Rangers resurgence. But, these 2009-2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPION Blackhawks really did things the right way and they're my first team for the rest of my life. They have a strong core of U.S. players, as has been their tradition, led by Patrick Kane (the best American player in the league) and complimented by Adam Burish and Dustin Byfuglein. And they even have players from Wisconsin and Illinois to boot! That's something the Red Wings have never done with Michigan! They grew young players, including their captain Jonathan Toews, instead of hiring journeymen superstars looking to chase a quick amount of huge bucks (Marian Hossa aside). The majority of the team is barely out of high school for pete's sake (it's, therefore, small wonder they have as hip a - yet wonderful a - song as "Chelsea Dagger" as their goal song)! And that's what's amazing. This young team of talented players is poised to be a dynasty! And to do this while the Red Wings and their evil ways are falling apart as quick as their arthritic players and the bank account of their owner is so beautiful! It's like good triumphing over evil! And not only that, this incarnation brought hockey back from the dead here. Two or three years ago, the United Center was half-empty. Now a regular season game there is one of the hardest tickets to get in town (I'm ashamed to say for the first time in four seasons, I didn't go to a single game this year - which is probably why they won the title). Watching Dennis Savard as an 18 yo rookie, the cutie pie, Doug Wilson, and the best goalie, Tony Esposito was always amazing. Definitely more fights during that era. Now with Toews, Sharp, Hossa, and Kane, this team is on a roll making history at no losses after 19 games!! I love the Blackhawks. Yes, I do. I think I intimidate guys the way I intensely watch games and talk about plays and babble on and on about their record this season, as well as team standings and player injuries and updates. But I can't help it- I love the team and I love the sport as well. Was I born a Blackhawks fan? Nope. I'll admit it, I was a figure skater when I was younger, and to be honest I used to get really annoyed with the hockey guys at my rink because they were always skating around so damn fast (now I realize I was just jealous). I actually used to go to San Jose Sharks games with my dad, and then Dallas Stars games when I lived in Big D. But I was never as die hard as I am about the Hawks. But I'll tell you why, and it has nothing to do with a guy named Ben. The Hawks are young, and I've always been a sucker for Phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes type stories, and let me tell you, this is one. They went from a team that was Stanley Cup champs, to attendance levels so low you could probably go to a high school football game and find more people. But with new management (same ownership, of course) and new blood on the team, their slogan Red Rising has taken new meaning. Ok, so as of this post they are on an 8-game losing streak. Ouch. But this is just the beginning- if you saw them play earlier this season, before all the injuries, you would know to expect great things from them in the seasons to come. The Hakws organization is doing all they can as well to start building the team back up, and they've actually sold out 5 of their last 7 home games! If you haven't been to a game this season, there is still plenty of time, and I can't recommend it enough. There's no other place you'll see people so excited about the national anthem, and the game of hockey itself is really something you have to see in person- tv does NOT do it justice. The Hawks have a young, talented team and although they may not yet be playoff material, I stick by them. While there was absolutely nothing as fantastic as the Chicago Stadium, the UC is not the worst place in the world (still have at least some quality Frank Pellico organ music) Tickets are inexpensive for the upper levels and are usually available on game day. What makes it even more special is that nearly every person there is a hockey fan and is there to watch the game, not to see and be seen as it is at a Cubs or Bulls game. The team is now under the control of Rocky Wirtz (late owner Bill Wirtz's son), so hopefully they can continue to improve and start focusing on the team instead of staying loyal to the good ol' boy netword that had been in place for 50 years... read more
