We went for my daughter's 26th birthday party, there were 10 of us family and friends. Even "grandpa" went! WHAT A BLAST!!! Everyone loved it! I haven't picked a favorite team yet (It's a toss up between the "Hell's Belles" and the "Double Crossers". Sorry girls but I just can't pick one!! But my husband was VERY fond of the "Double Crossers". In particular, Nina Millimeter" (I think it was the guns on her tush)!!! The birthday girl loved "Kola Loca" of "The Fury" and even got her autograph on a poster that read "blood is the new pink"! LOVE IT!! These girls are "tough" athletes. I was worn out just watching them! We understood the rules pretty fast, the announcers were excellent and fun! Beer, snacks, and team merchandise are available at the stadium. There's a "Party Bus" that meets at the Cobra Lounge and takes you to the Cicero Stadium. There are very few things that would get me out to Cicero (sorry to all you Cicero loving fans) and the Windy City Rollers is one of them! I have to admit that after sitting through a game I still don't understand roller derby, but then again I'm still trying to figure out the rules of football. But these gals wear fun outfits, sparkly makeup, and have some seriously amazing coordination skills! It all looks so fun, well besides the falling down a lot part. Much more accessible for us city folk, plenty of awesome seating, etc. I had a chance to catch the action again on Saturday night...and we were not disappointed. I think they walloped Carolina like 187-16, and while it was not the most intense match up I've seen, it just show that they are world class derby broads that deserve some respect. The stands were packed, the crowd was pumped, I couldn't help feeling like Ivanna Riot. The Athena DeCrime was at their new home, the UIC Pavilion. Ok shameless derby puns aside it was a great time, my only regret was not running into my fellow Yelpers while I was there. Here's the breakdown: * Tickets are $20, $16 if you're a student. You can get them through Ticketmaster, Broken Cherry or at box office the night of. I should warn you the lines are long at the box office * I got to see the Manic Attackers rout the Double Crossers for their first win in 3 seasons. Well done ladies! I also got to see a close bout between the Hell's Belles and The Fury, only to have the Belles pull ahead late in the second half * They now sell beer in the stands, no more drinking behind the curtain. Bud products, Stella, wine and hard lemonade were available. Food concessions are also open, I almost mauled the guy next to me for his cheese fries! * The Pavilion has the slowest ATM known to man, avoid it if you can Bottom line: Watching the Rollers is a blast, definitely money well spent. BEST SPORT IN TOWN! I have never been able to get into sports at all whether it be team sports like soccer or individual sports like tennis. But watching the really cool highly athletic badass chicks of the Windy City Rollers has turned me into a sports fan. I have never been able to relate to the athletes in other sports, but the derby girls are so nice and down-to-earth and they are showing the world that women can be really good at hardcore sports. Since I am a single mom it takes a lot to get me out of the house--- AND ALL THE WAY TO CICERO! I like to go with friends and have a couple of beers or bring my daughter and bond over female empowerment. I really like the fact that she gets to see their example. It shows her that women don't just have to be gymnasts or ballerinas---they can do anything and being tough isn't a bad thing! You should go check it out for yourself! read more

OK, so when you live in Chicago, everybody asks if you're a Sox fan or a Cubs fan. In the fall everybody asks what you think the Bears' chances of "going all the way" is. My dirty little secret is that I really don't give a shit about baseball or football past eating the hot dogs. This is why the Windy City Rollers is so great. I went for the first time on March 9, 2008, and I guess I found what I've been needing in sports. Like my friend noted to me, I must like sports where people take a pummeling (I like watching a little bit of boxing on occasion, too). Roller Derby is exciting, not too difficult to follow, and those ladies have a real passion for what they do (it's hard not to get caught up). It's all in good fun, though. What's weird is the connection I have to some of these people. One of my close friends is married to Queen B (retired). My other friend knows Blossom Bruiso, Chrissy Fiction, and May R. Daley. We also went to law school with Ying O'Fire. AND I randomly ran in to Gigantor on the bus the day after the match! What did I get myself in to? So, am I a sports fan now? I never thought I was.... These women f*cking rock!!! I wanted to check out the Windy City Rollers for quite some time and I'm so glad that I finally did. Wow, these chicks are bad ass. Tough as nails and hard core competitors. I really enjoyed watching the bout. I even started to understand the rules after a while. I wouldn't say that I'm hooked, but lordy, I did enjoy myself! A friend stated that going to a Windy City Rollers match was like going to a Cubs game. I replied "so, everyone just wants to get wasted?" Apparently. I was very pleasantly surprised by how entertaining and engaging the roller derby was and the Windy City Rollers' attitude and enthusiasm are a big part of that. $20 tickets for general admission is well worth it. I'm not sure I'd pay $35 for VIP seating on the floor though, seems like you wouldn't be able to see the action as well. It was really nice that they handed out little leaflets explaining the rules and play as I had no clue what was going on at first. By half-time of the first match I was talking about the Jammer and scoring like I knew what I was doing! I was even starting to understand the announcer and recognizing the skaters. The amount of athleticism was pretty impressive. I'm certain I'd last less than 30 seconds on the track with the Windy City Rollers. My Love! I will say that UIC lacks some of the enthusiasm of Cicero stadium but hopefully soon there'll be larger crowds to create the old time ruckus that was Cicero. I will say that I won't miss the lack of air conditioning at Cicero in the Summer. Peeling my sweaty ass off those seats was always awkward. Some games aren't as interesting as others. I mean you always want to see your team win but when it's 206 to 12 you have to acknowledge the point at which it became overkill. Otherwise, roller derby is my favorite sport. I never miss a game and I love coming out to support my ladies. Beer, Broads, & Bang ups are defo where it's at. I'd like to see the ticket prices go down a bit. $20 bucks every month is starting to add up. I'm defo appreciating the $5 tix for the game next weekend... and hoping they'll have more deals like that in the future. It was a bit hard to understand the points and stuff at first but even still, you get so into it and find your head turning as they turn around the track so you don't miss anything!! After missing the first few bouts of this season I finally was able to go check out the new digs. I was finally able to see if they still provided the kick ass entertainment and energy and fun I saw so much last season. Well, after nearly blowing my voice out cheering for, (and finally winning), the Hell's Belles, they still kick ass. They still lay the smack down, crushing and bumping, ducking and dodging, entertaining and fun. A bit more family friendly atmosphere, plenty of kids jumping up and down for their favorite derby girl, chances to win a free burrito from Chipotle, some great bouts, (especially the HB's versus the Maniacs which was close until the end, nice job Shocka and Athena!!!), much more fan interaction, great seats through out the space, plenty of opportunities to grab food and beer and best of all, (especially if you are having plenty of beers), plenty of bathrooms. Also they have a parking lot across for $13, which is well lit with plenty of room. Sad I can't make it in April... but May... May... I'll be back! read more

Let me set the stage for you. You enter the UIC pavilion warily after buying your ticket. You realize that you can sit anywhere, and you choose a seat close to the floor because - hell, why not? Not much is going on at the moment - some of the girls are skating around, warming up, and you spot an occasional fishnetted butt cheek. Feelin' good, waiting for the magic. Suddenly, and without warning, eight brightly-colored, spandexed humans burst into the arena bouncing and waving sparkly pom-poms. They are introduced (but you have no idea who they are because you can't hear the announcer over the cheering) and thus begins what might be the strangest fifteen minutes of your life. There is a lot of bouncing, some rolling, many skinny-boy-nipples-spandex-shorts-holy-crap-say-it-with-me-"sunlight" moments. And then it's over. (These guys are the opening act for several of the bouts each season, far as I can tell). And the Windy CIty Rollers are announced. And their theme song, "Move B&tch, Get Out The Way" comes on (perfect, no?) and the rink is filled with sexy-as-hell women in all manner of fishnets, kickass knee socks and Manic-tards (the unitards worn by the Manic Attackers - get it?). And the truth is that once the warm-up and stretching are over (and oh holy mother of happiness, the stretching is lovely) it doesn't matter that they're sexy because they start kicking the crap out of each other. And you find yourself screaming joyful bursts of, "Yeah! Knock the ho down!" and "That's right - kick her! KICK HER! My husband and I started going to the derby because a friend of ours helps to score the bouts. Now, we're obsessed. We've developed a list of our favorite players, we regularly fight over which team is better, and we eagerly await every bout. Because really, you could go out on a Saturday to some lame bar to count the backwards caps and drink overpriced beer, or you could go to derby! and drink... ok, overpriced beer, but at least you'll have a story to tell the next day. I went to my first bout this past Sunday and saw some of the most phenomenal ladies ever! The first two teams were the Manic Attackers and Double Crossers. Double Crossers ended up winning but the Manic Attackers sure put up a good fight in their super hero uniforms. The second wave of teams that battled it out were The Fury and Hell's Bells. The Fury totally wiped the floor clean on this one and I think Jackie Daniels is absolutely amazing! She can break through any pack without breaking a sweat and that's really what allowed The Fury to take such a big lead over Hell's Bells. The whole night was so much fun, so I have a feeling I will be going to more of these events in the future. Next time I need to bring an extra sawbuck so I can score one of those cute Windy City Rollers tote bags I have my eye on. Oh and if I could choose a roller derby name, mine would be "Crashalicious" because the whistle would blow and I'd trip over my own wheels and fall down before I could even catch up with the pack to crash through them. Pivot Blocker Jammer YEAH! Eva Dead Shocka Conduit (hot!) Hoosier Mama Ruth Enasia Roller Derby is a whole other language for sure! This was a absolute BLAST! I can't wait to go back. Watched a bout against the Philly Liberty Bells. It was tied in the end and won by a point by the Liberty Bells. Exciting to say the least! The fans here are incredible. As enthusiastic as Cubs fans but without the annoying drunkenness. Tons of signs and everyone in shirts from WCR and other teams. I love that the sport is so new, they're still coming up with the rules, but at least they explain the changes along the way. $6 beers. $8 pina coladas. All that good stadium food you love to hate like pretzels and nachos. Letting the kids come onto the track to greet the girls as they come out is adorable. The announcer is a hoot, who we didn't realize we had met at Yelp Around the World. They aren't near as physical as I expected but put on a great show. It was incredible to me how many out of town derby girls were there even. It's quite the group of women Complaints? Nope. Except I wish a bout was longer because I don't want the fun to stop and it's too far until the next one! read more

This was an experience. I'm glad we got the group discounted rate for $13 instead of the $40. I wouldn't have paid $40 to watch this because after an hour it gets kinda boring and you find yourself chatting and drinking with your friends more than anything. I also reserved a group of 60 seats. No seats where saved for us like we were told. I had to find someone so they could reserve it before it filled up to much. Just thought that was a little annoying. I'm a rough girl, I wanted to see more pushing, shoving, possibly hitting? I dont know what I was expecting. I guess that would be a little to intense for some. We can go to a UFC fight for that =) I suggest if you can get discounted tickets. read more

For my sister's 26th surprise birthday party, my family and I went to see the Windy City Rollers (thanks to mom and dad)! All I have to say from this experience is that if this place were any closer to home, I would be in there every weekend. I absolutely loved watching these roller derby girls . Watching them made me want to take my dusty roller blades out again and skate! Plus, I liked how I could catch on to the game quickly even though I have never seen it before. I cant choose a favorite team because I loved them all, but I can say one of my favorite players was "Varla Vengeance"! The announcers were also pretty funny to listen to! The games were a bit long but anyone who goes will enjoy every minute of them, just like I did! read more

Top Five Kick Ass Reasons To Check Out the Rollers on a Saturday Night Instead of Going to the Same Old Beer Garden : 5. They have more athleticism and brawn than most professional and semi-professional dude teams. AND wear considerably less protective gear! It's like the rugby of chick sports!! On ROLLER SKATES!!! 4. The names alone are worth it. Shocka Conduit? Malice in Chains? Beth Amphetamine? Megan Formore? HILARIOUS! I mean, one of the refs was dressed up as a sheik, for heaven's sake. For added fun, make up your own derby handle! Jen Trified Neighborhell!! See, I just chuckled to myself! This is fun! 3. I don't know if this happens at every game, but they had the Polkaholics play at halftime and between bouts...that is just incredibly cool. Not only that, but the music they play in between jams sets the tone completely - from AC/DC to Beyonce and everything in between, it's a soundtrack I would totally purchase. 2. While there are definite nuances to the game I have yet to comprehend, the basic gist is not too hard to understand...basically watch the girls with the stars on their helmets try to get ahead of all the rest of them and do endless, dizzying laps for points. Seriously, if you can do that you can play the part of hardcore derby fan! And finally... 1. These girls are FIERCE. And could totally kick your ass. Why I didn't give 5 stars: While the UIC Pavilion was pleasantly not packed, tix were $21, $13 for parking, $6.50 per beer, and the smoking outdoor 'corral' was uber tiny. I mean, couldn't they help out the amateur sports teams in town by not charging an arm and a leg? I pay that for beer at WRIGLEY, for heaven's sake!!!! These ladies kick some ass! Both literally and figuratively. I went to my first match late last year and was hooked. I had a great time! These girls are all so talented. I can't imagine doing some of the things they do... and I would totally break about 5 bones if I ever gave it a shot. I had the advantage of having the rules explained to me prior to the matches starting so I wasn't completely lost. Thankfully it's not too hard to pick up on. I'm still not clear on all of the penalties though, I just know that they happen pretty frequently. The Derby is a great sport. Fast paced, easy to follow, fun, and there are cool names and costumes too! Really, what more could you ask for? I don't have a favorite team yet... but as I attend more matches I'm sure one will emerge. read more

Roller Derby makes for an awesome night out - it's cheap, it's ridiculously convenient via the Blue line, and it's completely thrilling to watch. I knew pretty much nothing about the sport before going, and sure, it took me a little while to get the hang of the scoring and rules (still not sure about some of the penalties) - but none of that stuff really matters. It was much more exciting than I expected - by the second match of the night the arena was electric, and we were shouting our brains out. I'd expected a goofy fun night out, and got an intensely competitive athletic event on top of it. A couple of tips - I'd been ordering tickets online and picking them up at will-call - this works fine, but I don't think there is any danger of the event selling out, so going forward I'll be saving myself the 'convenience fees' and just buying them at the box office. Seating is all just general/open, so get there by the start of the first match and you'll have your choice of pretty much any seat. I recommend the side next to the Will-Call window, as it is farthest away from the guy who always brings a Vuvuzela. Seriously man, give it a rest. The UIC Blue line stop is directly across the street from the arena. Don't do what I did and think it'll be easier to walk over from the Jackson Red-line stop. I assure you, it is much farther way than it looks. read more

Fun! They didn't win this latest game, but they seemed to give the other team a nice bruising. Hips are deadly weapons! Great alternative to the usual weekend early evening activities. All ages are welcome so perfect for the visiting underage siblings, etc who want to have fun but aren't exactly the "jump in a pool of colored balls" type. Thanks to Rob L we sat in the suicide seats and had a birdseye view of the action (and the pink panties, thanks for pointing that out Zak). We almost got in the action a few times, and while we might have been a little nervous, I think we secretly would have enjoyed it. These women are balls to the wall and I was even wishing for more carnage (safely of course). I had been wanting to check this out for a couple years now. I've just become a regular follower this year. I'm pretty sure this is about a pure of sport as you get nowadays. In fact, I'm up for trading roller derby for the NHL as a major sport. I've dragged friends from both Chicago and Tucson to games and they haplessly enjoy it. Kinda get it, seems crazy and fun, but won't ever probably go back. But my roomie Timmay and I are fully on board. This is live action that just can't be missed. Between Jammer on Jammer action, every team vs. Megan Formor (who gets the last shot?), B-Amp shoving her own blockers for room, and Hoosier Mama delivering punishing point saving blows, this as sweet as it gets. A painful, tiring, punishing, blood thirsty, sweat dripping performance that is breathtaking til the end. The geek in me wants to create this into a fantasy sport to track categories like points, hits, blocks, minors, majors, penalty minutes, etc. Someday for sure. Unfortunately, I was not born a tough chick. I played the flute, did other non-tough things... But man, after seeing the WCR in action, I wish I had been one of those tough chicks! These gals are AWESOME! I boned up on the rules before I went because I wanted to enjoy myself (I feel that understanding the rules to sports makes things more fun...it's how I became a fan of football). Anyhow, these girls are dynamic, athletic and FUN! I was totally into it by the end. And wishing that I had some tattoos and the ability to skate like the wind. UIC Pavillion is not a bad place to check this out, although I had a hard time understanding the announcer. But all the seats are pretty good. My boyfriend and I went to the Windy City Rollers '09 season opener last night and we had a blast! Now that we've got one bout under our belts we've got some plans for the next one to make it an even better experience. We decided we've got to buy tickets beforehand and come early. When we arrived we had to wait in a huge line to buy tickets which made us a little late. Once inside we were a little disoriented and rushed to find some seats as the bout had just started. We'll be coming closer to when the doors open next time so we can get some food and beer and just hang out before the match. We initially sat near the floor behind The Fury for the first half of the first bout. Those seats suck though because people kept stopping and standing in front of us. We moved up to the upper level and that's where we'll sit next time. You get a great view of all the action and the beer vendors occasionally pop up there, too. In my next life, I want to be a roller derby babe... These women are bad to the bone. Last night I made the adventure through Cicero, "the mini-Gary" as Zak called it, pot holes and all and boy am I glad that I did. I never would have imagined nearly losing my voice as I hooted and hollered for my favorite derby girls, Peg Leg from the Double Crossers and Juana Rumble from The Fury. Just a side note, Peg Leg--the tiny thing that she is--takes a beating and keeps on trucking, thus becoming my ultimate roller derby heroine. The announcers are worthy of ESPN, the Ocho, status. The commentary is almost as priceless as their suits, which are, quite frankly the coolest threads I've ever seen. And I just love the way those boys "talk derby to me." What can I say, for $20, it's well worth the price of admission and then some. I can't wait for my next trip to the derby... I'm bringing friends. read more

How can you not love a sport that has a prancing banana mascot? I mean really. I definitely wouldn't want to run into any of these girls in a dark alley, but boy, can they skate! I've already established my favorites. Guess that means I'll be back. Overall, a great experience. Violence, great music, almost reasonably priced beer (for a sporting event anyway), and good suggestions for baby names. My only disappointment was that it wasn't more rowdy. I was simultaneously over- and under-whelmed here. The event itself is entertaining to be sure, even if the rules are cryptic and hard to understand. It doesn't help that the PA system doesn't really work, and it's impossible to hear the exlpanations being given by the MC. Nevertheless, the ladies display their aggressive demeanor and attire in amusing fashion, crashing into each other and racing around the track in a way that makes it easy to get into rooting for whichever team you've decided will be your protagonist du jour. Still, I can't help but be disappointed in their technique. Not that I've got any experience on roller skates, but it seems to me that the "checking" in this roller derby could be a lot more effective if the girls weren't afraid to get low to go in for their hits. Anyway, the whole thing is worth experiencing, although I'm not sure the relative level of competition is that far above what you'd see in a competitive mens park softball game. For $20 a ticket, I was definitely entertained but I'm still not quite positive how they justify the price of admission. I'm glad I went... I probably won't be back for a while though. read more

I don't know how I haven't submitted a review for the WCR yet! Oh yeah - it's because I skated with them for 3 years and didn't want to seem "biased." But bias-be-damned! The Windy City Rollers are fantastic. This all-volunteer sport will blow you away. The derby monikers are clever, the fans are a hoot, and the skaters kick all sorts of ass. These ladies practice their butts off, which is how you know they're true athletes and dedicated to this sport. Show your appreciation afterwards at the Cobra Lounge afterparties - but 'em a drink! I don't know where or when I heard of the Windy City Rollers, but it was quite a while back. Probably two years ago. All that time, I knew that I really wanted to check it out and see what it was all about... it sounded so bad ass! So for my birthday I decided to finally make the trek out to Cicero Stadium with my husband and two of my best friends. It took forever to get out there on the bus and the El, but it was completely worth it. When we first walked into the stadium area, I was a little weirded out... it's kind of like a high school gym in there! We got there early to make sure that we had seats and it was a good thing that we did. This particular bout turned out to be the championship game of their home season and the place was packed! It took a little while to figure out the rules and what was going on, but by half time I was totally into it and screaming for "my team" (Go Hell's Belles!!!) like everyone else. It was so much fun and those girls were crazy awesome... so fast and not afraid of anything! I can't recommend it enough and I hope to go back soon. read more

I hat a lot of fun when I went. It's very easy to figure out the basics if you watch a match or two. Saw it at the UIC arena and the audio was pretty incomprehensible, but the fliers fill you in on some of the details. I'm not really into sports but I liked it anyways.
