Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. My husband is a manager at a fine dining steakhouse in Scottsdale and I truly missed the "family" feeling that I get from sitting at his bar waiting for him to close up. The feeling of "I'm home". As soon as I started talking with Jonathan, he instantly recreated the feeling that I was missing from home and made me feel like a regular. After finishing my drink, I told him how much I appreciated his hospitality. Before saying my goodbyes, I briefly discussed going to another restaurant closer to the water on my last night in town so I could see the views before leaving. When the next day came and my conference ended, I walked out of my hotel and found myself walking in the opposite direction of the water and right into Rye. I ended up eating dinner, having a few drinks and even getting to know other regulars as Jonathan has such a welcoming aura everyone quickly becomes family. Having this kind of hospitality is a talent. It is not only special but almost impossible to accomplish in just one encounter. Traveling in an unfamiliar state can sometimes leave you feeling very much like a tourist, but Jonathan had an incredible ability to make me feel like a regular from the moment I sat down. But let's talk $$$. This was the priciest morning meal we had in Appleton, and one person in our group felt the price was a little high considering you have to put the sandwich together yourself, and only one of us was given a small ramekin of salad dressing accompanying our meal. Also we wish the bagel was slightly toasted instead of just a sliced everthing bagel.
