Just an updated review of Chiboo bakery! Recently went to the Bethesda Farmer's Market to pick up my order of the Lunar Festival inspired macarons on Sunday. I'm so happy Chelsea partakes in this market because it's closer to me now that I live in Maryland. I love that all the macarons were character designed and all came with a unique Asian inspired flavor. I love the matcha flavors or any fruit flavors, those are my favorites. Super cute bakery that sells cute macarons in Lake Anne! I didn't know they had a spot in Lake Anne, it is a small shop hidden away on the left side of Nordic-Knot. They had a bunch of different flavors of standard macarons to choose from. They also have cute macarons with different shapes and characters. I got a box of half dozen and I asked for help picking out the best flavors. The flavors I got were wonderful! The macarons were some of the best I have had. They were crunchy and soft. I tried the black sesame passionfruit and Thai tea macarons as part of a pop-up event in DC (for reference on ambiance). I appreciate the availability of these flavors in the DMV area. In fact, appreciate is an understatement. I should say desperate, because only that can explain why I didn't take a step back and think carefully before ordering. Black sesame passionfruit - it's an uncommon combination. And for good reason. Unfortunately, the tartness of the passion fruit overpowered and frankly just didn't complement the black sesame in any way whatsoever. The Thai tea one was okay to try once. For service, the staff at the event maintained a smile and displayed a polite, bright demeanor throughout my interaction with them. Having said that, during check out, I noticed the staff first put my treats in a box. As I was confirming my order, the staff started taking the treats out of the box and putting them into a thin plastic baggie. I noted to the staff that I preferred the box if possible, and the staff replied that it will get squished in the box. I then said that I will be traveling on the train. She added a cardboard tray as a substitute, like the ones that hold hot dogs at a baseball game (see photo). The customer before me ordered six macarons and the order was in the same type of box. I wondered whether that order was any less likely to get squished than the two I ordered. I wasn't going to ask again, but I could not make sense of the staff's response. At $3 per macaron, I was surprised that a box was not a reasonable request. My guess is that they were being economical given it was a pop-up event. Perhaps it would be a better customer experience if it was clearer that boxes would be provided for orders with a certain number of items instead of doing an impromptu switch-a-roo. Upon closer inspection, forget the concern about smushing it - the black sesame passionfruit was never aligned anyway (see photo). Given the presentation, flavor combination and the customer experience, I am not likely to order again. read more

I tried this bakery at an Asian festival and the macaroons were so delicious! The cashier was friendly and was helpful when I was deciding what to get. I still need to try all the flavors, but my favorite one so far is the salted caramel. The macaroons weren't too sweet and had a perfect amount of hardness, tasting fresh. They also had ube or taro cookies that were yummy. The Thai cookie was okay, I am not sure if it's the tea bitterness, but I wouldn't get that again. read more

I've purchased treats from Chelsea since before she was "Chiboo Bakery". In the beginning I was hopeful since some of the treats were tasty and the flavor combinations had promise. After multiple purchases, I made the hard decision to stop placing orders. I wanted to support a small, woman-owned business and I know she works hard! But I am not a fan of the method she uses for macarons. They are shatteringly crisp when bitten into, with no real chewy center, almost like an egg shell. The cookies I ordered at new years previously were very dry as well. I debated posting this review, but I think that honest feedback is necessary. There are good macarons in DC, but I haven't found a small business that can match Ladurée or Olivia Macaron (or bakeries in NYC or CA). I will continue looking! read more
