Ordered the Kimchi Jeon to share which is a Korean pancake with kimchi and bacon, it took a really long time to make but it was worth it! Very delicious. I ordered the Salmon teriyaki which came with rice and vegetables on the size and the portion is very big. I couldn't finish it all. I thought the salmon was missing something but the rest was delicious. My date got the Jeyuk Jungsik, pork and mushrooms with stir fry vegetables and rice. He enjoyed it as well! All of our meals came out sizzling which I love.

The takoyaki were ok, very liquidy inside.

We placed a to-go order for Bulgogi Yaki Udon and Chicken Katsu Curry. The Bulgogi Yaki Udon consists of marinated beef sirloin, garlic mayo, a poached egg over stir fried udon noodles. The Chicken Katsu Curry consists of curry sauce with sautéed onion and mushroom served with rice, cabbage salad, egg salad and miso soup. I absolutely loved my hubby's Bulgogi Yaki Udon. The noddles were thick, chewy and creamy. The beef was sliced perfectly with an amazing flavor. It also was some of the most tender beef I've ever had. My chicken Katsu was good but not better than my hubby's food. The Katsu was perfectly fried and the chicken was tender. I wasn't a fan of the egg salad. I didn't try the miso soup. Also the rice needed a hint of salt. It was blander than bland. I preferred his food over mine.

Many of the marinated meats were delicious. The limited ventilation might make your eyes water while cooking. It was a pleasant experience with many flavourful discoveries. A spot for a group dinner. So I've had Japote on my bookmarks forever. I love little independent food court vendors! However,…read moreJapote is only open Monday-Friday and only 11:30am-2:30pm, and these days if I'm in Montreal, it's usually just for the weekend. Or I might arrive as early as a Friday evening, so I hadn't been able to try this Japanese food court vendor with an apparent cult following...until recently! I was on a weekend getaway with my mom and we decided to get into Montreal on a Friday morning. So lunch at Japote it was! So the place is in the food court inside the Scotia Tower/Tour Scotia. It's in the basement, along with Subway, Lily & Cie, and a few other vendors. It's the one with the longest lineups, lol. I got the medium #8 Katsu Don (fried breaded chicken with egg on rice). It was around $6. And my mom got the small teriyaki chicken (#3 Tori-Don). It was around $4. So I'm giving it 4 stars for being good for food court food, but it wasn't like super duper. The small was really small. Unless you just want a snack (which my mom did because she just had a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's like an hour earlier, lol), I would recommend at least a medium. I enjoyed my Katsu Don. The breaded and fried chicken cutlet was tasty and the egg was really soft. The white rice underneath was slightly sticky, but not mushy. I had some of my mom's teriyaki chicken and I found the sauce too sweet. However, the chicken itself was lean, like my dish, and was still good. I also got a scoop of matcha green tea ice cream for dessert ($1.50). The ice cream was really rich and creamy and full of matcha flavour. It was a tiny scoop, but just the right size for a little after meal dessert. It is pre-scooped and placed in the freezer in a bowl. I had never seen this before, but I guess if it's busy, this makes the line move faster. Service was very friendly and efficient. Definitely a good place for an inexpensive weekday lunch. I've heard so many people raving about it so I was expecting it to be mind-blowing, which it was not, but it was still excellent for the price and for the fact that it's in a food court.

The Long Version: I have a soft spot in my heart for businesses inside bus and subway stations because all though highschool when my main mode of transportation was public transit (and walking) that's where I'd get most of my snacks, on the way to and from school and other places, lol. Lee N Kim (that's actually how they spell their business as opposed to the Yelp listing which has it as Lee & Kim) is inside the McGill Metro station. It's on the external side, so you don't have to pay a fare to access it. They are only open weekdays and only until 5pm, and always seem to be busy. They frequently have line ups and have raving reviews on many different platforms so I really wanted to try them out. I initially wanted to get the triangle kimbap and asked them if they could make me one without sesame seeds. They said unfortunately they could not because they already mixed the rice for the kimbap and the sesame seeds are in the rice now. However, I could get the bibimbap and they could make me that without sesame seeds. I had just wanted a snack, but I did want to see what the Lee N Kim hype was all about so I agreed to a bibimbap (yeah, I know, twist my rubber arm, lol). I got the fried chicken one ($12.95) because I love Korean fried chicken. The fried chicken is cut up chicken nuggets!! I had the saddest face when I realized this :( It was processed chicken meat. I was so disappointed. And the nuggets weren't even crispy. The other ingredients were fine though. They use purple rice and it was quite tasty. The bowl had lots of other ingredients: edamame, kale, cabbage, carrots, oshinko, and zucchini. I got the "spicy Korean sauce" (gochujang) on the side. Had the chicken been real Korean fried chicken made of real chicken meat and not processed chicken meat, it would have been a respectable meal. The staff were really nice and they even gave me a reusable tote bag for my takeout. And I love supporting small independent businesses, so it pains me to give them a less than stellar review, but I need to give my honest opinion and the chicken nuggets really put me off :( Everyone else seemed to be ordering the triangle kimbap and not the fried chicken ones, so maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Takeout only. Literally a kiosk in the subway station, that's the ambiance, lol. Review #202 (2025)
