Everything I was looking for. After a long couple weeks, I wanted a taste of "home" (I'm from Montreal) do I found this place. Quiet and tucked away, exactly what I wanted. Fantastic staff. All around. And well made home food. Loved it. If your ever Ottawa bound, head over for a taste.

I had checked online looking to visit a Gatineau place for breakfast and had seen this restaurant cited with good reviews. Im not sure how to put this kindly but I was pretty disappointed. I ordered what looked like the most palatable option, eggs Bénédicte and it came with some roast potatoes, some salad tomato and a slice of banana. The place is certainly other worldly compared to Ottawa and the people were nice but I'd really not recommend sadly. I don't like giving bad reviews but I'd not be going back.

Food is always great been coming for a few years now. I try and come every second weekend. screw Cora's!!!! Chez barbe is where the best breakfast is. The weekend lady's are absolutely blessed to be around. Keep up the fantastic work.

Fantastic little diner! Breakfast is fresh and everything well prepared. Definitely a hidden gem and well worth a stop.

Great for breakfast. Old school restaurant with great home made food. The western omelette is awesome.

So I struggled to write this because I used to love this restaurant. The portion sizes were…read moresignificantly shrunk, and the brewed coffee was horrendous. I usually get a latte there but decided on a regular one, that was a mistake. Their food did taste good, and their chutney was still delicious but the service was a bit gruff. They weren't rude by any means but I was ignored for 10 mins just waiting to ask for a takeout box. I could tell he was a bit overwhelmed and probably having an off morning, so I didn't take it personally. But when I'm paying $30 for one breakfast bowl and a coffee, I'd expect more than 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half and a few mushrooms in it. The food is delicious but you're definitely overpaying and 50/50 on the coffee lol

All the nearby spots are reserved for the apartment dwellers in the building. Ordered a Huevo Ranchero ($16) - which came with scrambled eggs two corn tortillas with salsa, cheese, sour cream and a side order of fries. The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The order did take a long time, the table not clean when we sat, no condiments on the table and coffee refills slow. An extra star for giving tons of vegan options

TLDR: Satisfactory diner. What I expected from a mini-chain with multiple locations across the…read morecity. Decor is cool, but no wow factor for the food, at least not to me (nor my husband). No bargains here, expect to pay $20+ per person. This Zak's location is the latest addition to the Zak's emporium. The space used to be The Savoy (which is now no more), and before that was Moe's Newport Restaurant (which is now further north on Churchill, co-located with Donna's Express). I wasn't really in any hurry to check out Zak's Diner because my impression of it was it was a place that sources its food from frozen and very little was actually made in-house. I prefer scratch kitchens, so this is why it wasn't high on my list of new places to check out. I did finally have brunch there with my husband and a few friends. I got the Eggs Benny ($19.49). The eggs were poached medium, as requested. The Hollandaise sauce tasted like there was a lot of flour/thickening agent. It lacked the creaminess I like and had a sour taste to it that I wasn't a fan of. The meat was just regular back bacon, similar to what I have in my own freezer. The English muffin could have been toasted a bit more, but otherwise was fine. I opted for tater tots instead of home fries. I expected crispy tater tots, but they were somewhat soggy. I was pleased to see some shredded lettuce and slices of tomatoes on my plate to add a vegetable component to the meal. The baked beans were unremarkable. My dish was perfectly edible and I finished it, (I hate to waste food), but it was lacking that je ne sais quoi, that something special to make it it's own, you know what I mean? My husband had the Meat Lover's Breakfast ($23.49). It came with 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, a thick slice of ham and 2 sausages, baked beans, 3 slices of toast cut in half (he choose sourdough) and tater tots. His tater tots were also soggy, so it wasn't just mine. He agreed with my assessment: ok brunch, but no wow factor. Our friends had an omelette, smoked meat Benny, and a Quesadilla (which was from the lunch menu). They finished their plates. They commented on the cool decor but no comments on the food. Service was excellent. My husband and one of our friends had coffee and our server was quick with refills. Our server was pleasant and attentive but not intrusive. Two of our friends were from out-of-town, so we had lots of catching up to do, and she let us be without interrupting us. The decor is funky with lots of signs and old vinyl records on the walls. The washroom doors have drawings of Jughead and Veronica (from The Archie comics) on the doors. The floors, booths and bar retain some of that French Bistro flair from the Savoy days. What the food lacks in uniqueness, the decor makes up for. They have a side patio, which is up against the side of the restaurant, and a front patio which is a cordoned off part of the road, so separated from the restaurant by a sidewalk. Street parking only.

But when it arrived the pork was cold. Not lukewarm, litterally straight out the fridge cold. I brought in a waitress to heat it back up. Is that just how this dish is served? I got my plate back in 20 seconds after a quick reheat. I started eating the potatoes and underneath them was a short black hair. Disgusting. I brought back the waitress and pointed the hair out. Even she was grossed out. They brought my plate to the back and I was approached by another waitress with arm tattoos. She told me that nobody in the back has hair like that and they all have their hair up. I pointed out the hair was underneath the potatoes, she told me "It is what it is". No offer of another plate, no discount. Seriously? Am I supposed to just accept that the universe placed a hair underneath my potatoes? I left overall grossed out and upset. My boyfriend covered the tab, we were charged full price for the hairy potato plate. It's just so nasty. I'm so dissapointed in how this issue was handled. I'm not a confrontational person and the extremely defensive and non-empathetic approach by the waitress just throwed me off. I'm not trying to get a free plate, I just wanted a warm breakfest without hair. If you like cold meat and need some more hair on your chest, come on down to chez monique.
